In Unity we are back we are back on the rooftops, not trees, not masts. Tarzan is off, Ezzio(like) is back on. This time your playground is revolutionary Paris. With Unity, you will be able to enjoy a wonderful rendition of Paris. My wife and I spend the honeymoon there and I was quite excited to see Cluny, Saint Etienne, Saint Eustache du Mont and many others in game. This was made possible due to some noticeably upgraded graphics compared to Black Flag, which was good looking itself. So, a big plus here, because we can stop pretending that graphics don’t matter and admit it is so. Else, we wouldn’t sink thousands of euros in the latest ATI’s and NVidia products. So let’s be honest here and appreciate Unity for what is has to offer in this aspect.
The story taking place in such a beautifully rendered environment is not top notch, but is not bad either. Short and with a twist. I enjoyed it, but I was left wanting for more.
As I said, the story is short, but the game has lots to offer in terms of side missions, some of them quite “nouveau” like the CSI investigation missions. There is plenty to do in the game if you are an avid achiever and like 100% game completion.
The stealth was a bit changed, with the introduction of a line of sight mechanic. You can now sneak past guards noses, if you are crouching behind a table or anything to break their LOS, giving you more freedom to finish a mission stealthily.
    The minus:
What made the AC franchise really popular was its parkour element. It is with sadness that I announce that after AC, AC2, ACB, ACR, AC3 and ACBF the long and trialed parkour system was overhauled. To the worst. For the sake of innovation. Now, the parkour was reduced to “press a button and …parkour”.
Such a thing in itself it is not a bad thing, but remember Black Flag, only before Unity, when you were high speeding on the rooftops of Havana and decided to change direction midcourse and assassinate a target of opportunity below you? It was the pinnacle of the previous five games being refined year by year (almost) to get you the bet freedom of movement/action possible. Forget it now. Your character will continue its path, oblivious to your commands to stop, jump and kill. The result of such a command would now randomly be:
    - Keep running on a predefined path.
    - Stop.
    - Stop and immediately go some random direction regardless of the direction you commanded.
    - Run to the nearest ledge and get stuck on it, in plain sight, and be noted by your target.
    - Jump to assassinate, but fell short of your target and enter combat.
    - Jump and assassinate an ally, who has just engaged your intended target.
In terms of combat, all previous AC has a similar combat system: enter combat, wait to be attacked, perform a counter attack and insta-kill your target (a bit less so in ACBF), then rinse and repeat. This has to be change to something better, to feel combat like and more engaging. The good news is that it has changed in Unity. That is all the good news. The combat was changed to this succession of events:
    - Enter combat.
    - Attack you target.
    - See your target attacking you back.
    - Press the button to parry (same as before but…different. I bet you read that in James Franco’s voice).
    - Even though you parried at the exact time as dutifully instructed by creative director Alex Amancio in his in game linked tutorials, fail to parry and get hit badly, even by the weakest adversaries.
    - Shake your head in disbelief and try to parry again, this time with more care.
    - Realize it is not your timing that fails to parry, that it is the game that doesn’t do it. Despite you doing the exact same thing each time, sometime the game acts, sometimes it doesn’t. Be lucky.
    - Keep trying to parry or dodge. Yes, dodge is an option now, but it is just as well implemented as parry. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
    - Watch your camera setting itself at an impossible angle and admire the wall that just popped in front of you, and see nothing of the combat around you.
    - As the camera resets itself on a better angle, watch your character getting shot before you could dodge (provided dodge would have worked) because you couldn’t see the enemy targeting you.
    - Get lucky and see the enemy targeting you, rush towards it, try to dodge his bullet, only to see your character climbing a nearby fence/barrel/junk pile and get stuck on it, no matter what gods or devils you invoke to get him down.
Finally, the game also features a coop multiplayer feature. Good thing, too. The bad thing? The game is 3 years old now and the player base is tiny. You won't have much opportunities to play this Coop in 2017. Get a friend or don't get any hopes for it.
    This is about it.
Thank for taking time to read this and I hope your will enjoy it, if you do decide to buy it.

But...There are quite a few cons, I will get the petty one out of the way first was the accents, now why are French people talking with a posh English accent? The thing that makes AC games incredible are the accents sure they all speak English when they are not a lot of the times, because of the English talking target audience, but I thought that was very confusing they sounded more English than the English people in Syndicate set in London lol, the gameplay to me wasn't great, sure stealth has had an upgrade but it felt to awkward most of the time, and the biggest con...Yes BUGS there was so many bugs in that game it was frustrating, the story was interesting did feel very AC like more so than Syndicate, but the Bugs and much of the gameplay was a let down for me, but still overall enjoyable. It's a perfect game to play while listening to a podcast. If you really pay attention, you'll notice that Assassin's Creed Unity has so many things for you to do, but somehow manages to feel incredibly empty.

But I also can't deny the fact that the game looks pretty good for the year it was released.

This game is the definition of a "good game". A game with an exciting story, okay characters but, a ton of technical difficulties and clunky gameplay mechanics. A game with an exciting story, okay characters but, a ton of technical difficulties and clunky gameplay mechanics. I couldn't go one second in this game without losing frames or experiencing a glitch such as an NPC just randomly popping in/disappearing (though some were quite funny) but, props to Ubisoft for significantly improving performance from the disastrous launch. Gameplay is quite similar. ARNO WOULD NEVER GO WHERE I WANTED HIM TO GO!!! It was as if he had a mind of his own and he truly hated me and wanted me to have the worst parkour experience in the whole series. Oh, and don't get me started on the cover system. It is truly broken and excuse my french.............. a pure piece of **** Majority of the time I got caught during stealth cause of this poorly executed mechanic which really deterred the stealth experience and led me to constantly restart checkpoints so that I could have a full stealth run on each mission. Lastly with gameplay, I have to talk about combat. I like and understand the premise where you should be a sneaky assassin and combat should be a last resort but, I thought at times it could get too overwhelming. This is especially prevalent in large groups making it nearly impossible to kill all of them and to feel like the badass one-man army like in the previous games. *Breath*
Now let's get to what I liked which was the story. I am a sucker for emotional, impactful, and action-packed revenge stories and this game truly delivered. The synopsis is after the death of Arno's father, he is taken in/adopted by another individual however, this individual was assassinated by a group of people who Arno and the daughter of this individual Elise, hunt down and assassinate throughout the game. This was excellently executed with numerous set pieces, large-scale assassinations, and beautifully produced cutscenes that really made me connect with the main characters and feel impacted by what was going on on-screen. Arno as the main character is a memorable one but not my favorite as a result of his arc throughout the game. In the beginning, he is quite a charming, dangerous and witty character which I really enjoyed and appreciated. However, after the beginning, he loses all his poise and just becomes this stone-cold killer with only one quest which is the quest for vengeance. However, all scenes with Elise brought out the nature of him that I liked which is why by the end of the game, I loved his character and one I shall remember and be inspired by. The other characters on the other hand were also pretty good but I feel, were a bit underused and could've had more time under the spotlight to truly connect with them.
    *Breath*
I think that's about it. Dear reader, please remember these comments are mine alone and my experience may greatly differ from yours, and that's something I adore about games. +1 point for the historical beauty of this game. +1 point for the Nostradamus's riddles. +1 point for detective missions. So, overall it's 7... Because this game has absolutely the WORST controls. Maybe Tallion from the Middle-Earth was as clumsy as Arno. My Dualshock suffered a lot of kicking and throwing because of this game. Even writing this makes me angry.

7/10 is for ubisoft for screwing it up. Unity was to be the game to bring the core AC idea back to it's glory self. But I guess we have to settle for comical, fake and mediocre RPG games. RIP Assassin's Creed, unfortunately you fell into the wrong hands :((

Graphically its impressive, and the hundreds of on screen NPC's at a single time is particularly splendid. The combat can at times be weak, yet I've never enjoyed combat in previous iterations, however in this particular game it can be slightly more punishing, and the preferable method is to assassinate and run, arguable what the franchise is about. The side missions can be entertaining, although a tendency to mindlessly complete them without really considering their story is commonplace and perhaps due to the irrelevance of many of them. The murder mysteries can be quite entertaining also, yet often they drag on with investigation zones miles apart. Similarly, the main assassination missions have been revamped, with numerous entries and side missions that can affect the nature of the assassination, interesting but not revolutionary. Overall, a year on this is a fairly standard AC game, with clunkier controls, yet certainly a more interesting and detailed setting and environment that other iterations. Probably worth a rental if you're particularly interesting in the series. Expand

"Joking aside, the graphics, mission structure, co-op focus, and other implementations make this game a step backwards from AC4."

Are you serious? This IS Assassin's Creed, not a naval simulator. I'm thankful that Unity took a step back from ACIV's gameplay. ACIV just felt like a third person Call Of Duty. 1 v 10? Not a problem in ACIV, as you can chain kills with the overpowered counter-kill system. Is that the essence of an assassin? Mowing and plowing down everyone in your way?

Unity felt like a step back to the original Assassin's Creed games, especially to AC1, where there is no counter kill at all, all for a good reason. Mowing and plowing down everyone in your way is fun, but it gets boring after awhile. It also takes away the necessity to buy better equipments *cough* microtransactions *cough* (actually, in ACU you could farm for the items yourself without the microtransactions, pretty easy actually, just complete all Cafe Theatre renovations and missions and purchase all Social Clubs, ta-da! 10,000 livres per 15 minutes, although some are locked until you play Club Competition)

From the stealth perspective, the cover mechanic is a welcome, although unnecessary, addition to the game. The stealth mode (L2 button) introduced into the game is also a great addition to the game, as it enhances stealth playstyles greatly and adds a new dimension to the game.

Ranged-weapon mechanics is a bit of a pain in the a** though. Rifles and pistols have the same range and accuracy. Seriously? The aiming mode is quite buggy too.

The problem with ACU is that you can BARELY Assassinate mission targets that are incapacitated inside smoke bombs if you are already inside a conflict. The targeting system is a bit of a mess imo.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with the gameplay, although some elements can be better implemented *cough* less glitchy *cough*.

I do agree on the graphics being subpar though. They were great during the first few missions, but then they went to crap as the missions progressed. And don't mention the clippings. They're EVERYWHERE (trivia: the epidemic begun from AC Brotherhood). Even in cutscenes. Seriously Ubisoft? At least you can make sure that none of the hoods (I'm looking at you, Legendary Phantom Hood) clip Arno's face so innocenly in one of the most important cutscenes of your game (including the last mission).

The parkour and controls are both good and bad. The good thing is that parkour from high buildings is much easier now as you don't have to slowly climb down a building if you can't find a haystack. This makes ALL the difference. The bad thing is that the "Controlled Descent" system is glitchy. Sometimes Arno would clip inside a wall when descending and clip out again for a brief moment. Overall though, I think the revamped parkour system is a very welcome addition to the franchise, provided that you don't mind playing spidey.

However, the game felt EXTREMELY unpolished. The tutorials are incomplete, the "Database" doesn't have much information (trivia: they have grammatical errors! such a polished game!)

Hell, the e-manual doesn't even tell you how to reload your pistols! I had to spam my DualShock to figure it out (hint: it's L3).

Moving on to the co-op system. As a YouTube user described it:
    "DISCLAIMER:
This trailer is HEAVILY SCRIPTED and does not depict the reality of co-op with your dumbass friends."

The co-op system though, is fairly solid. Even when I played with a guy from UK (I'm in SEA), the co-op session felt lag-less and it was a very fun experience.

And yes, before you ask, the FPS is choppy. Not as choppy people seemed to led me to believe though (20-30 FPS, I thought it was like 10 or 5). Personally, it's a minor problem compared to the other problems.

The story, on the other hand, has potential. But it's just way too compressed. It's basically Assassin's Creed Simulator. Remember how Ezio got 3 titles dedicated just for him (4 if you count Embers). Now imagine those 3 titles are condensed into 1 title. A disaster. An over-compressed piece of junk. Arno went from a womanizer into a homicidal assassin imbued with spidey-abilities bent on revenge in, what, several hours? Main characters has A LOT OF POTENTIALS, but Ubisoft deems it necessary to kill them off in a few missions after they were introduced. The missions are basically "Kill Target A". Done. Hell, the First Civilization became a minor footnote/reference in this title! Where's the conspiracies we AC fans love?

I don't usually appreciate stories being dragged out, but I feel that this story needs to be dragged out. Let us enjoy the appetizer before proceeding to the main course. Hell, you could make even more money than micro-transaction!

Overall, a dirty-ass impure diamond-ore that has not been refined into actual diamond. It's dirty, it's muddy, but when you look at the potentials of it, you'll be astounded as to why Ubisoft rushed its refinement

Now they aren't anything revolutionary with each release, and there are always issues of repetitive and boredom depending on the person.

The pros of this game is Paris is beautiful and well done. On top of that there are more interiors then ever before, and they are beautiful. Since I've been to Palace of Versailles I was impressed how they capture the scale and expansive of the beautiful palace, and the details of the rooms and art work is well done. Then throw in plenty of random houses and other interiors that you can go through makes it very expansive. Then I'm impressed by the amount of NPCs you see on the streets. I think at times it's a little much when you are walking down the street and have dozens of people, but at times in modern day Paris it's like that on the mos random streets. Seeing massive protests are cool and make you feel like you are witnessing a massive piece of history that was lacking in AC3. Then the missions seem more varied with an emphasis on stealth, something the AC games have lacked for a while. And the combat is solid as always, and enemies seem better at fighting you for once instead of standing there all the time. That said, it's easy to get cheap kills.

The biggest con is the AI at times when you aren't in combat is puzzling. This is a constant issue, and I don't know if they will ever truly fix some better AI. They tried with a system of an enemy seeing where you were spotted last, but when they reach that point in a small area they stopped there instead of checking out the next room. In the large outdoor areas it makes sense, and it works when you ran across the corner and then sneak into a building that is open before an enemy can see you sneak in. But indoors it's puzzling and sad at times. Stealth mechanics aren't horrible, but not the best. Finally the story is just there, so far. I haven't been intrigued in an AC story since AC Brotherhood I even though AC Pirates the story was just there with random issues between you and other NPCs.

Overall this game is solid, but if you are bored with AC series, then wait for it to be on sale. If you enjoy the AC series and like history like I do, then you'll enjoy it.

While offering a lot of content, those elements start to feel more and more generic towards the end, particularly due to the mediocre story that has a hard time to combine the different missions into a coherent plot that makes the player feel invested in the events.

Fans of the series will still appreciate the game for giving them more of the same, however, it has become clear by now, that a creative break may be in order to bring the series back to its former level.
