A Plague Tale is one of a kind and tells a compelling story about a fascinating historical period. Too bad it is too easy, simplistic and guided.

A Plague Tale tells a tale about human cruelty, the loss of innocence, survival, and family via its beautiful visual and imaginative level design, but it feels like near the game’s end confidence was lost in this vision. It gets in its own way by deciding that something bigger was needed to keep the player’s attention. It’s a sour end to an otherwise great game.

I'm really glad I had the opportunity to play this game. Despite the fact that the storytelling is not consistent all the time, and the gameplay is a bit limited, this game has plenty of heart and its one of the most unique experiences in its genre.

The sweeping takeaway from A Plague Tale: Innocence is that it’s an imperfect but powerful story on death. It dares to explore the impact of killing in an industry that treats violence as routine and ordinary. That doesn’t make up for some glaring oversights in the acting and writing, however, but if you can stomach seas of vermin and 10-15 hours of thick French accents, this may be the story-driven stealth title for you.

A Plague Tale: Innocence has a great story, but the gameplay has a level of convenience that undercuts the perilous world.

A Plague Tale: Innocence has some clunky writing in places, and its play gets stale after a time, but it prevails with a compelling mystery and a beautiful world.

If you’re in the mood for a perfectly respectable, undemanding weekend game, A Plague Tale: Innocence is for you, though fair warning: The sight of so many dead bodies might shock anyone watching over your shoulder.

This beautiful, if a bit slow tale is worth your money because of its intriguing setting and story, as well as its great voice acting work. Its gameplay remains a bit mediocre though, thanks to clumsy controls and repetitive actions.

A Plague Tale: Innocence deserves respect for daring to be different, funnelling you through a bleak European backdrop that’s seldom seen. Despite some neat ideas, though, the stealth and puzzle mechanics drag, and the story can’t quite make up its mind about what it wants to be. Furthermore, while the presentation is spectacular, the project lacks polish in key areas and overstays its welcome at times.

Children band together against the darkness of a collapsing France in this bleak and beautiful if somewhat rickety medieval fantasy.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is the best game I've played this year. Easily the best. A stealth game with puzzle elements and a hearty dose of horror, A Plague Tale may turn heads with its killer rat swarms, but the real star is the great writing and character portrayals. This is something special.

While many elements of the game, like its focus on stealth and crafting, can feel familiar, it’s wrapped up in a story and world that are like nothing I’ve played before. There’s a sense of urgency and danger that never really goes away. You can never truly relax.

A Plague Tale has simple stealth and crafting gameplay that’s not much to write home about. But the excellent story is the big draw here, because it’s something so rare in video games: a genuine tragedy. There are moments of light, too. The brother and sister make friends in their journey; there are jokes and adventure and joy. Hugo even collects flowers and puts them in his sister’s hair. That was all sweet and wonderful, but it never made me forget the dangers. I never forgot the rats. And I never forgot the dog.

I found out about this game by chance, this gem came out of nowhere, and what an experience it is! The story is fantastic, the gameplay, the dialogues, everything is very well put together. Also the setting really draws you in and the world exudes with art and really makes you feel the unsettling feeling of plague as you roam around the village. Kudos to the developers for this incredible game! Full Review »
