I would have given the game an 8 if dying in the game wasn't so annoying and frequent. The gameplay sometimes felt like a chore to get through. The plot developed nicely though and I wanted to keep seeing what would happen. When I first started the game, I thought the game was not going to be that good but it got increasingly better as it went on. I like how they fleshed out all the different gameplay mechanics to create different scenarios. I think the highlight of the game was the gorgeous vistas though. Expand

I do like the overall presentation and idea of the game so that is why my overall score is a 6. Expand

My first problem with this game is that it is way too scripted, you can't really solve anything without following exactly what the game tells you and sometimes it makes zero sense. It's also way too linear and the gameplay soon becomes stale after a couple hours, since there is no room for creativity at all. Most of, if not all the enemy types can only be killed in one way. For once I’m agreeing more with the critics. It was definitely a fun game with good story, but it wasn’t amazing.

Little variations in combat, and I noticed the game was a bit glitchy at times.

It truly has potential though, if they ever choose to make a similar game.

The game started off with a great setting, interesting plot and good skill curve. At some point everything starts to crumble it seems: characters act inconsistent, the story seems too foreseeable and the gameplay is the same, combat also too easy. It seemed to me like they wanted to finish the story off quick. For short, it's a moderate game for me.

It's definitely not as good as all the reviews said. The graphic and atmosphere was really good, but the story wasn't a big deal. At the and of the game, the gameplay was very frustrating. You had to fight, but it was originally a stealth game, so the compulsory fighting sections just didn't work. It's not worth 45 Euro.

The folks saying best graphics ever have must not have played many games. The graphics are muddy. Last point and I think this may just be me but Hugo is just a pain in the arse. I had flashbacks to the GOW kid (who was also a pain in the arse). I think if you can have feelings for these two main characters you can enjoy this game more but I simply did not. There are plenty of instances where you kill an enemy that has a sword with him, why doesn´t your character pick that sword up, you are being chased and people want to kill you on every turn, perhaps having a sword with you could be a good idea don´t you think, (the same example with a bow, or an ax etc) but your character prefers to pick up rocks instead...she could pick up both you know... Overall an ok game, very linear (it could be good or bad depending on your tastes), it plays similar in style to Tomb Raider without the platforming or shooting, and with a lot easier puzzles.. One other thing the boy Hugo is annoying as hell so be advised that you´ll hear his annoying complaining a lot... This game has potential I would reallly like a sequel where your character could fight if spotted, without an annoying kid, and tougher puzzles, and maybe add platforming sequences.. Expand

In more aspects than one. I guess the mechanics looked good on paper, but in reality it wears thin almost instantly.

It's basically about a series of drawn out quicktime events. It might disguise itself as actual gameplay, but you quickly realize that you have to do everything a certain way at certain times to get past each section (and the game will tell you how, incessantly). In that way it is incredibly linear, and the exploration takes a backseat almost completely. Step off the line and die. It's incredibly binary like that. And not in an interesting way.

I wanted to like this game so much, it looks great. There's so much potential for more, but it wears out its welcome after about 1 hour. Not a good sign. I tried forcing myself to finish this, but ultimately decided to refund 2 hours in.

I'm quite disappointed with this. Why? Because the first 30 minutes were incredible! I loved wandering about the mansion / castle grounds, chatting with the servants and experiencing the great details in the location. So much potential for creating a true exploration game with puzzles and intelligent game design.

Instead **** hits the fan pretty quickly, you are told to start running / sneaking, and it basically doesn't let up from there. Plenty of pretty locations, but it's like a long tunnel and you don't get to appreciate it at all. Ugh.... So much potential!!!!

This almost felt like a more polished AAA budget successor
The game takes place during the plague, there are rats everywhere and guards for some reason that’s up to you to find out trying to capature your little brother
This is a 12hours tale full of emotion and great story telling
Im so happy to see games wit ha narrative focus still thriving in a gaming world all about online and loot boxes
The narrative here pulls you along and is the highlight of this game for me..
I always love it that no matter how frustrated or over a section of a game I get that there a good story that’s pulling me forward to see whats next..
Thankfully a plague tale isn’t full of frustrating moments
This game isn’t challenging one bit, however it still manages to be engaging,
Its no walk through the park, you have to distract guards and use fire to get your way through the sea of rats
You aren’t completely defensless though, you’ve got a sling
You can gather materials throughout the world to craft different items for this sling, you have a rock that can be used to distract guards or head shot them and as the game progress youll unlock new abilities such as setting fire to burnable object to scare the rats just to name a few…
This adds a styx or even a dishonored layer of theres more than one solution to moving onto the next section of the game
and chckpoints here are great, so youll rarely have to redo large sections of the game if you fail..
And thankfull A plague tale does a great job of keeping the environment fresh as well as the gameplay, however this is where my biggest issue with the game comes into play,
A plague world goes for a tense feel rather than a fun kids creating mischief feel which is fine…
This means that you cant just run through the game crafting whatever whenever…
you need materials to upgrade your arsnel and certain materials are scarce
These items are more for I have no other option…
but this also means that 12 hours of stealth can get taxing…
A plague tale doesn’t suffer from pacing problems, in fact it does a great job most of the time at giving you a break from the action to just enjoy story pieces and sets.. but I would’ve liked more of this… more slow walk, talk, enjoy the plague moments…
All in all A plague Tale Innocence is a unique experience set in an intriguing world with a well written and directed story guaranteed to keep you hooked
I give A Plague Tale: Onnocence
    a 7/10

HOWEVER - there is one thing about it that is absolutely inexcusable - the voice acting. For a tale of many characters, tons of text and a lot of speech, it really breaks my heart to see how bad it is. I don't accuse the actors though - the person who decided that the entire game should be conveyed with the most awful French impersonations should get a kick to the head. What WERE you thinking?? That it sounds more authentic with thick accents?! "Chernobyl" got it - if you're not going to be speaking the native tongue of the setting - don't distract your audience! Don't cripple your actors! Literally none of the emotional moments in this game land because somebody insisted it makes more sense for characters to sound "authentic" than for speech to sound natural, and that is an absolutely BAFFLING decision..

But do I recommend it? Well, it's an okay, sometimes great game with gorgeous environments and mediocre animations overall. It maintains momentum at the expense of being a bit basic in terms of gameplay, and that's fine, not everything needs to be a Hardcore RPG where You Died all the time. The accents weigh down the score quite a bit, since the story is interesting and I wanted to connect to the characters, but it's really impossible to do when they're busier trying to force out a fake accent than to express any sort of emotion, and that, for a plot-heavy game, is really too goddamn bad.

The music also really shined throughout the game, and was very well woven into the gameplay and story. Even the graphics were pretty impressive, it was much higher of a quality title than I had anticipated. I also really appreciate that the developers made a game in a setting that you never see in videogames, and wrote a story that is completely unique and original. With all that being said, I described this as more of an experience than a game because the gameplay is very shallow and linear. It plays like a simple stealth game with minimal combat, but as you play through you realize that the solutions you find are pretty much the only solutions to move forward. That really makes the game feel like an interactive movie. It drags a bit as a game, but luckily the story and characters keep you pulled in until the end. I look forward to see what they do with the sequel because it will either drive the game to huge successes, or it will alter the formula so that it takes away from the story. It’s a very delicate and carefully crafted balance that can go either way. Regardless, I enjoyed the game despite its linearity. Expand

Sadly the gameplay was neither challenging nor rewarding: You are told what to do at every moment - even during the final boss. The side characters have no personalities and are only defined through their abilities. There is also a completley unnecessary upgrading system, which I chose to ignore after chapter V.

But now I've played the game i realize that that demo was the best part of the game, as the rest of the game never really reaches that level of quality.

The game is a third-person action/puzzle game, relying on sound and lighting to create tension and a lingering feeling of danger. As a character you are always vulnerable, and rely on tactical displacement to get past the danger. You have several tools, weapons and a little brother that has the plague or something. And that's the game.

While the way the story is told is pretty good, i find the story itself to be rather shallow, predictable and uninteresting. The fact that the gameplay of dodging patrols, creating fire and causing distractions is very repetitive doesn't help either. The best part of the game is the level when you cross a Battlefield. Apart from that level all the other ones don't feel distinctive or interesting.

I had hopes that this game would be entertaining in its own right as many people praised it. But having played it myself, i don't see it. It is a passable game that is just to repetitive for my taste. I give this game a 6/10.

Nothing to said about gameplay - monotonous and typical stealth with the main game's feature - ratsfirebraizers and theirs mixing. To the finale of gmaeit is becomes too boring even with a lot of different variation.

Crafting and collective are good in this game and something reminiscent of The Last of Us.

So with all this advantages and disadvantages it is strong seven.

But because those moments lead to an immediate action sequence there's little moment of reflection. So instead of being horrified, I just became numb and forgetful of the horror.

There is a presentation of a visually beautiful world with a real historical setting with an actual political and social account of the period. Though a great deal of historical context is hidden behind collectable objects that the player is forced to find by themselves. By the end of the game I have only found half of the game's collectibles. Meaning that I missed out on learning 50% of the provided learning material concerning the historical time period. It's a awful reminder that video games are a unnuanced art medium for learning history.

Really good art and word building, engaging story. Trial and error stealth gameplay with some action sections. Controls feel slow and not precise; aiming is really buggy. To summarise: the story is good enough and pushed me to continue playing, but the gameplay is not very good. Recommended only if you have a lot of patience and tolerance to frustration.

A decent indie game with some nice mechanics that are sometimes let down by arbitrary limitations and glitchy controls. Story has some real highlights and some extremely tedious slogs. I'd probably try a sequel if it didn't have Hugo's whine.

Pros: Good story, good voice actors, looks beautiful, nice gameplay mechanics.
Cons: Repetitive, at the same time very grim but also a little too childish and silly (mice tornados, really?), not a lot of freedom to try out different tactics, extremely linear.

Finally went back and finished the game. I really enjoyed the story and I'm looking forward to playing the sequel much more now. I'm only giving this one a 7 because the controls are a little wonky, the animations and lip sync voices don't line up well, and the worst of all is the brain dead AI. The stealth in the game is a joke.

The game has a clear point of view, and makes good use of its setting. And I enjoyed it quite a bit.
However, the game gets a bit repetitive after a while. And at times, I found that the controls - at least on the PS4 - needlessly working against me. Especially the aiming/throwing was often very slow, leading to multiple fails and quite a bit of frustration. Not that I mind failing at

Ok, the game has beautiful scenery and has a great sense of the period to it. You feel yourself really in this time period walking around, however the way how you walk around brings you back to a 90s 3D game. It is ridicules. The idea of the hordes of rats is very nice but again poorly executed. All in all not a triple AAA but a good A title and definitely worth to pick up in a discount

Second, the crafting system used so many random components scattered throughout the world that I went without an upgrade for about five straight levels, because I was always one or two mats short in some category or other. If there had been only three or four mats rather than six, it would have given the upgrade tree more flexibility, so that derps like me could have a slightly less frustrating experience.

Third, the story had a bit of fluff that didn’t add much to the game, specifically in the middle. Without going into spoilers, three of the episodes could have not been included and nothing would have been lost, but the game would have maintained a tighter focus and moved a little faster.

All in all, it was fine, but not one I would specifically recommend.

some super cheesy dialogue sprinkled throughout
graphics seem like a step down for a game that is relatively newer
it's basically a lesser-version of The Last of Us
Pretty quick game - only 10-15 hours (may be a pro for some people)

That said, I enjoyed playing this game for a day. However, it definitely left me a little disappointed after how pumped I was watching the trailer. If you're into stealth games, you will find some value here as it is not too expensive and offers a worthwhile campaign. 5/10

A plague tale is a gem of a game. It has a lot of heart and the devs clearly put a lot of effort into it. The different types of ammo that are unlocked during the game allow for different approaches to scenarios which I enjoyed. Though toward the end, sling upgrades allow for the basic ammo to get the job done for the most part.

The game did fall short for me a bit on the gameplay side. I found the controls quite clunky and unresponsive at times. It caused a lot of frustration when I couldn't lock onto enemies and kept dying. The gameplay and puzzles also got a bit repetitive toward the end for me.

Overall, a great game to pick up if you are looking for a shorter length experience with a good story.

A good game but not a great one. I really liked the beginning of the story but towards the end it got a bit weird imo. The gameplay is nice. The graphics are good. The characters are lovable. Just wasn't the fan of the end of the story or what setting the end of the game shows.

A simple tale aimed at a younger audience / children I guess. Decent enough gameplay, though basic, as it takes you through the story, graphics are ok, nothing special though. Limited in scope, and a short story. Glad I only paid £10 for it, not worth much more imo.

Disclaimer: I stopped playing the game at chapter 5 because I found the voice acting unbearable: Why do the French people in this game speak English with fake French accents? Perhaps that's a personal pet peeve of mine, but it completely takes me out of the story and prevents me from relating to these characters. I can't stand it when movies do that either. Perhaps that's a personal pet peeve of mine, but it completely takes me out of the story and prevents me from relating to these characters. I can't stand it when movies do that either. I switched the language to French then, but that just practically didn't work out for me, because I couldn't read the subtitles fast enough to keep up... Tried German then, but the voice acting was bad...

I bought the game expecting a (somewhat) realistic historical adventure (in the vein of RDR2), I didn't know it was going to be a supernatural fantasy horror, especially after reviews praised the game's realism. Sure, I could have read summaries and watched in-depth reviews, but I didn't want to spoil the story, as that's what I bought the game for.

Everything else has already been said in the other reviews:

    - yes, the controls are somewhat clunky
    - yes, the gameplay is redundant and linear (the stealth mechanisms can get a bit tiring for my taste)
    - yes, it looks good
    - yes, the score and atmosphere are good
    - yes, the boy is annoying;-)
    - the gameplay mechanics force some laughable decisions onto the characters, as the game constantly needs to come up with reasons why we can't take torches or other sources of fire with us
    - the AI enemies are often times just too dumb to be taken seriously: So you throw a rock at a metal object a few steps away from a solider, to which he reacts by saying "Oh, what a strange noise, let me investigate!", then waltzes to the metal object, literally staring at it for 20 seconds rather than checking its surroundings.

I bought this game to experience the story – I'm not a hard-core gamer; I just like good storytelling, but the French accents, supernatural story and (to me) overall silliness of the swarms of fire-fearing rats took me out so much that I could never really enjoy this game, even though I really wanted to based on all the good reviews it had received.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

There’s a lot lifted from other games in A Plague Tale, but somehow there’s nothing cynical about it. This is a full-hearted reach for the big time of AAA storytelling that succeeds in the most important departments, thanks to its sparkling polish and subtle characterisation. It’s one of a handful of games for which I could tell you the personality traits and motivations of not just the protagonists, but four or five secondary characters. Consider this review a carrier: Asobo Studio is a name that’s going to spread.

Aside from the basic gameplay and a few rough edges, A Plague Tale: Innocence tells an incredibly gripping story about a couple of kids in the most grim circumstances imaginable. It nails the horrifying setting with standout visuals and a thick atmosphere that is worth experiencing at least once. If you're looking for the next great story to play through, A Plague Tale is definitely it.

I thoroughly enjoyed A Plague Tale: Innocence from start to finish and cannot fault this title at all. While the gameplay is fluid that is accompanied by excellent graphics and audio, where A Plague Tale – Innocence shines is with its characters and the way it tells their story. So if you’re upset at how Game of Thrones ended and need a story that is told correctly, A Plague Tale – Innocence does that flawlessly.
