As a guy said before me, 10 means perfect, this game is not perfect. Though this game is really good, it missed out on too many things that would have made it THE game. As other people have complained about, no haircuts, no tattoos, no car mods, no aeroplanes, cars have slippery tyres (though I'm a good driver), less weapons, hardly any gangs or gang wars, turf wars, no real perks, such as buying massive mansions, businesses, night clubs and territory, that should not have been left out. I can understand why it has got so much critical acclaim as it is a technical achievement in gaming. But it feels as though reviewers are too afraid to say what they really feel. In the fear of being criticized. I can see this game isn't all it was cracked up to be. The multiplayer needs A LOT of work. They need to fix the technical issues such as continuous loading. It's not the perfect game, but since there has only been a few good games this gen, it has had a lot of praise. But I'm still angered that I have all this money and no Strip club, protection racket, car shop, Yacht, Casino or Mansion to spend it on Expand

I love violence in games, as this game was fun (to an extent, before shit got whole heartedly repetitive) and had plenty of it (Flinging your character out the front window is absolutely a blast) BUT! In no way shape or form can I see this game is that much diffrent from the last, and the last, and the last GTA to come out other than a few tiny changes to the gameplay, graphics, and storyline. GTA IV is a good game, sure, but who gives it 100% or 10 out of 10, really? Any game, for that matter. I'll give it a 9, yeah, but it's far from perfect. There are numerous stability issues and the aiming and shooting sequences (in particular) control like a dog.

This game is my favorite of the GTA series (other than the original top down game). I say this because I didn't get bored right aways. The missions are entertaining, but having to go and pick up your friends all the time is annoying. The driving isn't that great, the cars feel like crap. The graphics are decent, but that's like gold in this series. If they were excellent, I think Rockstar would explode and cause a world-wide panic. The online isn't that great, it's been done before, only better. The story is the shining part of this game, it's really well done, and not another overly cliche gangster/gangsta' plot point. So, it's not perfect, but it's good. Sorry I don't think it's God-like because everyone else tells me to. Expand

Gameplay and story is what I wanted. I don't care that much about graphics, city-accuracy and varying degrees of realism. Missions are boring, repetitive, and forgettable. The story does a decent job of trying to push you from mission to mission, none of which were terribly memorable, and all of which were hampered by a horrible camera system and lacking controls. There is really no excuse for this. Uncharted, Gears of War, other games have far superior cover systems. The most enjoyable aspects of the game were directly lifted from the previous games in the series. I'm not sure that I'll finish this one. A lot of wasted potential here. Expand

I'm very impressed with GTA IV. It seems RockStar has a good formula for making a Grand Theft Auto game and instead of changing it completely they tweak it and add more features. Now I imagine when you go from engine to engine some elements are lost, like physics. The car physics are difficult at first, but once you get the hang of it they become easy. Definitely a strong addition to the series and a quantum leap in terms of city design and visuals. For those of you obessed with framerates et al, perhaps not quite the Crytek-fest you were hoping for, but the open-ended feel of the city more than makes up for this (besides, I think it looks just peachy). The combat is vastly improved (Gears of War has a lot to answer for), and missions don't feel as random as before; I actually relished a fire-fight this time, whereas in San Andreas I prepared myself for being hosed down by an enemy I couldn't even target. I can't quite put my finger on it though, but *something* is missing now; some spark of tongue-in-cheek, a hint of cheekiness noticeably absent. Being able to get a taxi anywhere you want removes the tedium of having to drive halfway across the city to pick up your buddy, but isn't driving everywhere what this game is about? I finished the storyline in a few days, and just thought "Oh, is that it?". Though I didn't want to see Nico stealing jet-packs from Area 51 or parachuting onto a dam to blow up generators again, I did sort of miss that vein of silliness, just a little bit. SMile, Rockstar, it's only a game. Expand

And I really miss dancing and lowrider challenges from the previous installment, GTA San Andreas. The story was much more compelling and discribing, telling the tale of a man rising up from the ghetto, and making a name through various activities and assignments, whereas GTA IV describes practicly the SAME thing, only slimmed down to fit two endings. It gives you a stunningly detailed world with limitless possibilities but mocks you and quickly slaps your wrists if you dare to try anything extraordinary. Driving had an over the top arcade like feel in previous GTA's that made it very fun but 4 went overboard and made it feel like a flat out simulation. Walking and running quickly became notorious due to the countless stops and delays when you nudged something or made a quick turn. The cellphone integration was clunky and needless. Dating and hanging out was forced down your throat and the missions were very repetitive. All in all, I found playing GTA4 to be more of a chore than anything else. As a game by itself it looks good and plays well and i had some very happy times playing it, as part of the gta series it is however, dissapionting. many things which made vice city and san andreas such good fun are missing and replaced by some very poor mini games , friends that bug the hell out of you to do boring repetitive things with them to keep them happy. It's all a bit of a chore.

I actually liked the driving. It's cool how the old junk cars (i.e. Roman's Taxi) can't handle worth a damn and the wheels lock up when you brake traveling at high speeds and the fancier cars (i.e. Coquette, Comet, Infernus) handle like a dream and seem to have ABS. I also liked how varied the buildings are. If you take the time to look at them there aren't very many I actually liked the driving. I also liked how varied the buildings are. If you take the time to look at them there aren't very many that are identical, and little things like graffiti add to the atmosphere. But where is the comedy? Where are the properties? With such a massive variety of buildings, why can't I enter the vast majority of them? Where is the sprawling landscape? Where is the national guard? Where is the mission variety (you can either "drive here" or "drive here and kill this guy" or MAYBE "follow this guy then kill him and his friends")? Why are there clothes stores from San Andreas that I'm not allowed to enter? Why do these stores have online shops I can't buy things from? Why don't I get unlimited ammo after I beat the game (I mean, 8 rockets, seriously)? What's with the ending? Did I put up with all that monotony just to lose? Why can't I take over Pegorino's house after he dies, with the two garages and and a house with a helipad right around the corner? Why do I have to spend time taking my 6 friends to one of 7 or 8 generic tasks just so they'll like me enough to help me out (if Rockstar was shooting for realism, saving Roman's ass probably would have been enough reason for him to give you free taxis, same with Little Jacob for the cheap guns)? In San Andreas, there were 3 unique cities with a massive country landscape to fly over/drive through in between. In GTA 3 and Vice City, you were confined to a city but the atmosphere was so light and fun that you felt like you could do anything. GTA 4 restricts you to three identical-feeling islands, covered in high-rises and skyscrapers, and once you get over how fun the ragdoll effect of running over people is, you begin to feel absolutely limited to what you can do. I waited the entire game to get an option of something to do other than the safehouse, a date, or a mission. I never got it. If you've never played a GTA game before this title will absolutely blow your mind, but anyone who has played either third-person game in the franchise will be left feeling ripped off and disappointed due to the complete lack of new features (or even old features for that matter). Long story short: if you have a backwards compatible ps3, get the GTA trilogy. If you don't, get a used ps2 and get the GTA trilogy. Each title in this set offers hundreds more hours of enjoyment than GTA 4. Expand

Unfortunately what is otherwise an amazing game is let down by some absolutely awful driving controls. Considering this is primarily a game which revolves around driving, its mind blowing how badly the cars drive and the irrotating camera angles used when driving. Its made 100 times worse when driving a motorbike, and attempting to use a helicoptor is beyond belief!! This then bleeds into certain missions which require you to chase people down in cars, or on bike/mo-ped and its beyond frustrating. Those can be a nightmare. Then we have the issue of Missions... if you fail one, you have to restart the ENTIRE thing again from where you begin. Meaning you have to once again find a car, drive to another location (which may be a long distance off) then begin the actual mission. And if you loose your health or your bullet proof vest, you also have to eat and buy a new one, and new ammo BEFORE doing all of that. It would have been better if it respawned you nearer to where the action starts in the mission, and with all the health, ammo and armor you had at that pointt. But instead your health is down, your armor gone and you have to travel there AGAIN. It can cause a lot of shouting and screaming at the TV. But aside from those two big issues... its a great game. Liberty City is just too big, while the local environment is too small. When you turn your back, cars are suddenly appearing from behind you that weren't there a second ago. And on missions you're often told to go to the other side of the city, which takes too long. Most annoyingly, the controls during gunfights are abysmal. The camera is too slow to find someone shooting from behind before you're killed. As a result, the missions too frequently involve looking at the position of the enemy as you fall down dead, and then the retry is ridiculously easy. Also when I wanted to run from fights, I've found myself unable to hop into a car. My phone has rung and the fire button has answered the phone instead of firing. In the quest for gritty realism, the silly fun bits from GTA 3 have gone or been integrated more closely into the environment. I'm already surrounded by gritty realism - I want a game to be fun. They represent the control of each individual car and what it's capable of. Not a revolution, but rather a delivered promise of a refined formula that reveals detail like no other game has. I am glad they got rid of the stuff like the gym and the swimming, who wants to spend 90 minutes of gameplaying time to build up your underwater swimming abilities. Graphically it is great, the audio once again is a great choice. Driving the cars takes some time getting used to it but it has been made more realistic. The fighting felt to me a bit loose but who buys this game to get into fistfights ? Once again Rockstar have proven themselves to be at the top of the pile. Already looking forward to the next installment wherever or whenever it may be set. Expand

Not as good as San Andreas or vice city because its too realistic, the storyline is also quite dull which is why i can believe why I don't wanna play it again.

It certainly is a great game, but it doesn't wow you like the others did. GTA3 blew me and everyone I know away, Vice was only babysteps above 3 in gameplay and presentation, but had a pretty stellar story line and added a fair few new features we all wanted from 3. San Andreas was leaps and bounds above those two, in regards to the sheer amount of activities and cool characters. 4 It certainly is a great game, but it doesn't wow you like the others did. San Andreas was leaps and bounds above those two, in regards to the sheer amount of activities and cool characters. 4 is good, but I can't help but feel that everything new it brings to the table, they should have gone that 1 step further. The sheer number of radio stations is brilliant, but none of them have as much depth as the smaller number in the previous titles. The friends system is brilliant, but you run out of activities to do with them all pretty quickly and it becomes a chore. The stand up is hilarious, but it doesn't take many visits to exhaust it all. The tv stations are great fun, but only 2 means you'll burn through it all pretty quickly. Multiplayer is great fun though and a very welcome addition. I don't mind the step up in realism, I prefer it. It's what made San Andreas so far ahead of the others. It also makes police chases so much more intense when your vehicle handles and damages realistically. I would 100% recommend buying the game, but don't be too worried about waiting until November for the PC release. If you want it for a console, I recommend the x360 version over the PS3 version because with the x360's better triggers, aiming is quite a bit easier. Ultimately though if you have both consoles, or are looking to buy a console, get it for whatever system your friends have, as bashing around with a group of mates online is fantastic fun. Expand

It was a great game and the most refined outing so far, but the ending was... strange, the missions were unoriginal(shoot, shoot and shoot more), there was nothing to do after you finished the story, no way to make money and sometimes it was boring. Not the best GTA game, but a nice game. There are many more games which are alot better.

Both 360 and ps3 versions are good. i gave a 8 to the ps3 version because the 360 will have exclusive downloadable content. i highly recomend 360 version, but i can see that the ps3 version is less laggy.

  1. Grand Theft Auto IV is not a perfect game, but it is fantastic through and through, from start to finish and beyond. It is so massive, vast and impressive that it is almost mind-boggling to imagine how much work must have gone into the game to come up with so much detail.
  2. But GTA IV will never get old, or start repeating itself. It will always offer anyone who turns it on an experience to savour.

GTA4 is a traditional crime story through and through, with a script that rarely strays from its purpose, a pitch-perfect supporting cast, and an expert combination of in-game storytelling and crafted cut-scenes. [June 2008, p.80]
