I love this game and can't find a fault, a great storyline, good missions although people may find it repetitive i think every mission is unique in its own way. Trophy system works well to keep people playing.

One thing is though that there are not enough guns! I loved San Andreas because of your weapon arsenal! Heatseeking rocket launchers, harriers, they had it all! Brilliant story, great characters, good looks and did I mention the story? Well, it's not perfect though(who is?) the multi player is a down, the physics some times goes on vacation, and the police could be trying a bit harder(which criminal that have murdered 150 cops would get away with it?). besides those downs though, GTA IV dose deliver and for those of us(at least me) who Brilliant story, great characters, good looks and did I mention the story? I personally liked the story because it was very involving, and dose have some nice touches that makes one think that the story could be real(though we all know it isn't, right?). One thing I do miss from the previous GTAs are the ability to fly, yes I know LC is small, but seriously, even GTA 3 had the Dodo! on the pc version graphics is also a little down, the shadows are all dithered, which is annoying and it looks bad, and there is a bit of over-use of shaders here and there. I'd say this game is high up on some of the best games of all times, but it haves it issues, but they don't ruin the game, they are just a tiny bit annoying Expand

Horribly over-hyped in nearly all respects. Rockstar Games have undoubtedly created an impressive digital world but have forgotten what makes games fun: their heart and soul. It's certainly a solid experience throughout but once it has lost it's original charm it never reclaims it. Unfortunately realism has been placed over fun.

Personally, critics have been too smooth with that game. Repetitive missions, annoying features such as breaking out the windshield when you collide with something. They should have give it a 85, not 98.

The critics where either bribed or where to exhilirated by the new minigames , cellphone options e.t.c . They concentrated way too hard on the "environment" and forgot about the people who play the game. Driving is now rubbish, would be OK if the brakes worked, missions are all samey totally lacking in imagination, storyline weak and anticlimatical, characters annoying rather than funny, radio stations boring and again not funny, music all rubbish, Lazlo as a loser doesn't work, combat improved but still dodgy, keeping your friends amused gets on your nerves and finally it all takes itself far too seriously which for me is everything that Rockstar used to stand against! I will still probably buy the next one but patience is wearing thin (especially with the episodic rubbish that us PS3ers can't get). Also this game's crying out to have multiple cities using the 55Gig capacity of the PS3 to "fly" between them in aeroplanes (like we used to have in the PS2 days) but bet they cop out on that one due to inferior capacity of XBox. Bigger concern is that it's a sign of the times. Manufacturers are all playing it safe and innovation is running dry. My PS1 and PS2 collections outnumber the PS3 stuff by about 5 to 1. Where are the innovative titles like Abe's Oddysee, Incredible Crisis, MGS 1 & 2, Silent Hill 1 & 2, TR 1? The other thing I don't get is how come all of "us" can give this an honest review yet all the "professional" reviewers have been duped by this game? Expand

It gives you a stunningly detailed world with limitless possibilities but mocks you and quickly slaps your wrists if you dare to try anything extraordinary. Driving had an over the top arcade like feel in previous GTA's that made it very fun but 4 went overboard and made it feel like a flat out simulation. Walking and running quickly became notorious due to the countless stops and delays when you nudged something or made a quick turn. The cellphone integration was clunky and needless. Dating and hanging out was forced down your throat and the missions were very repetitive. All in all, I found playing GTA4 to be more of a chore than anything else. San Andreas was way better. Dont know why the critics thought it was so awesome.something tells me i won't be believing the "critics" anymore.

I realized the fun was gone in the first car chase where I shot out the guys tires and he kept driving along at full speed, crashing through cars without slowing down, and making all the turns like he was on rails. That's just one of many many examples. It's almost like they tried to remove anything fun that had remained from previous games. Where's the fun and mayhem of the past games? I really can't believe that reviewers cited answering a cell phone, and driving people around town and on virtual dates for virtual bowling, as features that made this a better game. Seriously...who paid off who for those reviews? You can see the discrepancy when you look at critical reviews vs. actual gamer reviews. I think a lot of people aren't going to look at the GTA series the same way. I hope Rockstar listens and doesn't believe it's own hype for the next one. It was worth a 7 not a 10. Expand

But now as soon as the car starts moving, Niko falls off, as he most likely would in the real world, and I sigh as another one of my once numerous tiny joys in the GTA world dies. By applying realistic driving physics Rockstar has taken away one of the best aspects of the game, the unrealistic but insanely awesome driving. No more property to buy means the money you earn is essentially useless. Buying property was one of the best aspects of Vice City and San Andreas because you felt like you were taking over the city. Once upon a time our characters wanted to do something with their lives, become something, take over. Instead we're given nihilistic Niko, who we have absolutely no attachment to to begin with. In fact his history is purposely presented as a mystery, leaving us with this sarcastic ghost of a character. The missions are menotenous and boring. The relationships are the worst thing to ever happen to the GTA series. It is NOT fun having to go on stupid dates with your cousin, especially after the 5th or 6th time. It's like this. I get home from work and I want to escape to an awesome world of freedom and adventure. Instead I have an annoying cast of fools badgering me to go to a cabaret show and if I don't feel like going they get offended, and take away their taxi service. Not fun. At all. Expand

Liberty City is just too big, while the local environment is too small. When you turn your back, cars are suddenly appearing from behind you that weren't there a second ago. And on missions you're often told to go to the other side of the city, which takes too long. Most annoyingly, the controls during gunfights are abysmal. The camera is too slow to find someone shooting from behind before you're killed. As a result, the missions too frequently involve looking at the position of the enemy as you fall down dead, and then the retry is ridiculously easy. Also when I wanted to run from fights, I've found myself unable to hop into a car. My phone has rung and the fire button has answered the phone instead of firing. Not wanting to repeat common threads of debate i.e. most overrate/best game of all time? I want to submit some points of observation and possible debate: - Firstly, many reviewers (edge in particular) talk about 10 being a summation of a game being of revolutionary status. They highlight how it is the basis from which other titles of its genre or type are compared, or a point at which a new direction or scope of possibility is achieived. Personally, GTA III is when this mark was reached, not GTA IV. Secondly- Whilst GTA IV offers a world of pure magical realism, geniune brilliance and relentless sophistication in its scope you cannot deny it's limitations. In terms of gameplay, the repetitive mission structure makes it difficult to sit down and do more than 4- 5 missions at any one time. The missions themselves generally fit the same basic structure. Go to point A, drive to point B and kill someone, drive to point C, collect cash. The side missions are not incorporated but instead become a hindrence and general thumbs down annoyance (sorry packie!) after the first carbaret or game of pool. A game bound by a mission based story development like GTA IV must account for it as an essential part of it's overall rating. It should not be dismissed simply because of the vastness of the world we are given to experience. For example, Oblivion achieves this is a much better way for me. GTA IV is without question a phenomenal game and I praise Rockstar for such an ambitious and daring achievement. But I hope it doesn't win game of the year. That prise has to go to Little Big Planet. The game is basically an improved version of 3, while ignoring the large majority of additions its sequels provided. I have to wonder since when highly repetitive missions, horrible framerate and bad controls (driving a car in GTA used to be fun). Answering the whims and chores of your cousin and contacts is not an interesting feature in any way. The game is overall fun in small doses but it doesn't match with the previous titles. The only redeeming factor was the online gameplay which is quick, versatile, and while not perfect, it's very fun. looking at the scores given by professional sites is simply annoying and disappointing, these sites should help the gamer, not the game. GTA IV gets a nice average 7. Game reviews website gets a 3. Expand

Initially I gave this game a 9, a single point short of a perfect score due to the somewhat clunky controls when walking, driving and shooting. These are smaller annoyances, but the car handling doesn't seem natural when small sedans feel as backheavy as big stationwagons. Lately I withdrew another point when I switched from a 29" SD CRT TV to a 37" full HD LCD TV. The graphics looked impressive in SD, because it blurs out all the little imperfections, but on a large full HD TV these become painfully easy to spot and the sum of them is quite detrimental. Shadows in particular are so badly made they look like something from a game made 10 years ago, and people, cars and buildings look so rough around the edges sometimes you'd think they were partly pixel-based. If you enjoyed previous GTAs, avoid this game at all costs. Its the complete OPPOSITE of previous GTAs, good graphics, boring storyline, dull characters, no variety in the gameplay, ect.

I am extremely dissapointed with rockstar, the only reason it scored so high with the critics was because it happened to be the first next-gen sandbox game on the market, GTA4 has failed miserably.

After I beat the game and had played the online mode numerous times, I felt as if there was something missing in this game compared to San Andreas. It was the lack of variety in guns, aircraft, and things to do. It kind of felt a little repetitive and it seemed like there wasn't that much to do after you realize the story is over. For that reason alone, I gave this game a 9. I still consider this to be a great game, one of the best of this generation, but I still thing it was a little overrated. Expand

Definitely a strong addition to the series and a quantum leap in terms of city design and visuals. For those of you obessed with framerates et al, perhaps not quite the Crytek-fest you were hoping for, but the open-ended feel of the city more than makes up for this (besides, I think it looks just peachy). The combat is vastly improved (Gears of War has a lot to answer for), and missions don't feel as random as before; I actually relished a fire-fight this time, whereas in San Andreas I prepared myself for being hosed down by an enemy I couldn't even target. I can't quite put my finger on it though, but *something* is missing now; some spark of tongue-in-cheek, a hint of cheekiness noticeably absent. Being able to get a taxi anywhere you want removes the tedium of having to drive halfway across the city to pick up your buddy, but isn't driving everywhere what this game is about? I finished the storyline in a few days, and just thought "Oh, is that it?". Though I didn't want to see Nico stealing jet-packs from Area 51 or parachuting onto a dam to blow up generators again, I did sort of miss that vein of silliness, just a little bit. San Andreas was leaps and bounds above those two, in regards to the sheer amount of activities and cool characters. 4 is good, but I can't help but feel that everything new it brings to the table, they should have gone that 1 step further. The sheer number of radio stations is brilliant, but none of them have as much depth as the smaller number in the previous titles. The friends system is brilliant, but you run out of activities to do with them all pretty quickly and it becomes a chore. The stand up is hilarious, but it doesn't take many visits to exhaust it all. The tv stations are great fun, but only 2 means you'll burn through it all pretty quickly. Multiplayer is great fun though and a very welcome addition. I don't mind the step up in realism, I prefer it. It's what made San Andreas so far ahead of the others. It also makes police chases so much more intense when your vehicle handles and damages realistically. I would 100% recommend buying the game, but don't be too worried about waiting until November for the PC release. If you want it for a console, I recommend the x360 version over the PS3 version because with the x360's better triggers, aiming is quite a bit easier. Ultimately though if you have both consoles, or are looking to buy a console, get it for whatever system your friends have, as bashing around with a group of mates online is fantastic fun. Expand

And I really miss dancing and lowrider challenges from the previous installment, GTA San Andreas. The story was much more compelling and discribing, telling the tale of a man rising up from the ghetto, and making a name through various activities and assignments, whereas GTA IV describes practicly the SAME thing, only slimmed down to fit two endings. 1. Grand Theft Auto IV is not a perfect game, but it is fantastic through and through, from start to finish and beyond. It is so massive, vast and impressive that it is almost mind-boggling to imagine how much work must have gone into the game to come up with so much detail.
