This one's done by DIMPS again, and I expected a lot more from them. As with each Dragonball game, for each new improvement, something else is changed or removed which drastically changes the standards by which a fighting game is measured. I will go into detail about this later. But first I want to say that I like the general idea of the game. Competing against other players online in matches up to 3 players is a fighter's dream. Playing cooperatively with friends and other players in missions called Parallel Quests or PQs is also very fun. You can also customize your custom characters appearance with quest rewards or store bought items which adds a bit of flavor to the game. The soundtrack is very good. However, there are some very notable and disappointing setbacks that the game suffers from. During battle with other players, or in co-op mode, there is a significant drop in frame rate on the PS3. This is extremely irritating at times and really hampers the gameplay. At this time, there is nothing that can be done to fix this because of hardware limitations on the PS3. The only other thing you can do is buy a PS4, but I won't do that since you have to shell out $400 to buy the hunk of junk, then purchase Playstation Plus in order to play online each year. Server stability is also low, with low population caps, frequent boots to log-in selection screen, or just not being to log in at all. Namco Bandai is aware of the problems and hopefully they will fix that. Now back to the fighting standards. The 2D Dragonball games like Budokai 3, Burst Limit, and Shin Budokai another road had a pretty good combat system in my opinion. You could create any number of punch and kick combinations using the square and triangle buttons on the PS3 to create an infinite number of combos. That system has returned in XV, although not as good as Budokai 3 or Burst Limit, but still far better than the shallow and meaningless button mashing of Tenkaichi 3 and Raging Blast. It's not without its faults though and I'll give a few examples. The non-custom characters such as Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo etc, all have their skills preset and you can't change them. Super Saiyan has to be assigned to and Ultimate Attack Slot and Kaioken has to be assigned to a Super Attack slot. Some of the preset characters have two Ultimate Attacks equipped in their slots, some have one assigned, and some have none at all. This is irritating because if you love the DBZ characters like I do, you are stuck with their preset skills and can't change them like in Budokai 3, Raging Blast, or Burst Limit. For some reason, they decided characters like Cell and Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta will not transform, so they have two Ultimate Attacks. For example, Cell has Super Kamehameha, and Super Spirit Bomb. Now let's say I wanted to use Super Saiyan 3 Goku. Remember that Super Saiyan 3 has to be equipped in an Ultimate Attacks slot and can't be changed. So he gets one Ultimate Attack, Super Kamehameha or Super Spirit Bomb depending on what Goku you pick. Another problem is that transformations drain your Ki. You can equip a skill called Energy Charge in different degrees to compensate for that. Energy Charge, Full Power Charge, and Maximum Charge. The problem is that they didn't give any Energy Charge to some versions of characters that transform making it impossible to maintain Super Saiyan. Kaioken, unlike Super Saiyan uses stamina instead of Ki. Your stamina is used to block attacks, fly around, or use defensive skills. This makes Kaioken virtually useless in 1v1 fights because it drains your stamina quickly The other problem is that you level up a character like in an RPG. Each level you get points to assign to the following attributes, Health, Ki, Stamina, Basic Attack, Strike Attack, and Ki Blast Supers. Some characters, like Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta were given a very low amount of Ki. This makes their Super Saiyan state hard to maintain and limits their number of attacks. Therefore, the characters aren't balanced like they were in other DBZ games. The other thing I think the devs could have done is pay better attention to detail. Super Attacks like Special Beam Cannon look great but it doesn't work well in PVP because it's too slow and misses quite often. Other moves like Death Ball can just be spammed over and over and easily connect. Some of my favorite attacks, like Light Grenade, look plain awful and not much thought was put into the detail of the the attack like other DBZ games. For example, Light Grenade looks awesome in Burst Limit and Raging Blast, but it looks more like a regular Ki Blast in XV. Targeting reticles, orbs that fly out of players when being hit, and command menu add visual pollution. The voice acting is awful. One voice sounds like they paid a black kid to do it. Overall, the game is very beautiful and visually appealing as with any DIMPS DBZ game. It's very unfortunate that the game has frame rate drop, balance issues, and server connectivity issues Expand

Going into this game, I did not have that much of a history with actually playing Dragonball video games. Outside of playing some of the older DB video games and small amount of time with Sparking NEO, I hadn't really touched any of the 3D DBZ video games. In 2018, at the cheap price it was on sale for, I figured it was worth a look.

In 2018, at the cheap price it was on sale for, I figured it was worth a look.

For those not in the know, the game reuses a ton of character designs and story bits from Dragonball Online, a MMORPG that never made it West and got cancelled years ago. That being said, if you are at all familiar with that source material, this game really isn't going to offer much for you.

The music in the game is rather forgettable. None of the background music stands out and really doesn't do much to highlight the action that is going on. The game's translation is also seems sorta iffy at points. The game does have selectable Japanese voices, which is what I played the game with, and you notice, even not knowing the language all that well, that certain things that are being said are not being translated correctly. It's also worth noting that the game pretty much assumes that you are playing a male character, as the game a multiple points referred to my female Saiyan character I was playing as, as a he. "

The game also suffers from quite a bit of slow down in some of the more action heavy bits, to the point I thought the game was going to crash and the game dropped into single digit frame rate at points.

However the game's fighting system isn't too complex. It's pretty easy to pick up and play, and you will feel like you are playing a Dragon Ball Z fight. The character creation is pretty good, and the light RPG elements allow you to grow and get stronger in a way that feels natural with the way the story progession is set up. While some of the actual story missions could be better, quite a few of them are quite creative and well thought out, and aren't just another basic play the show game. For that the game should be praised.

The animated cutscenes and the voiceovers are all quite good (English and Japanese). If you don't have an upgraded system yet, than this game is worth getting, and would easily be a 7 or 8, but there are enough technical issues with the game that make the game have enough problems. I have to imagine other versions of this game lack the slow-down. I would recommend those over this port.

I like Dragonball and I like this game. The game's character creation system is also pretty good with a fair number of voices (including a hilarious guest apperance from the DBZ fan serieres DBZ:Abridged, it's male voice 8, enjoy) plenty of hairstyles and faces and being able to change you size and shape, though our male Majin friends are still stuck being big and round. Though as far as combat goes I find it to be a little too limiting forcing certain races into there arch-types rather than having them be easily moldable into your play styles (EX. Namekians are harder to use as KI users because of there racial making them more akin to Melee) and there is also a bizzare lack of a tail on our Saiyan companions making them indistinguishable from humans. Another Gripe I have with the game is over custimzation on clothing, THough i can understand why certain outfits have locked colours (like the Orange-Red Turtle hermit gi) I stil think the fact that most sets are uncolourable why is is that while wearing KIng-Kai's outfit I have to have it being pink? (though i'll admit the pink grew on me) his outfit is not iconic enough to be locked to one specific shade. I also found that acquiring new ultimate attacks was quite tedious with most of them being locked behind Master missions. And my greatest gripe with the game is how stupid they make you AI companions, They programmed good ai but make the one helping you on parallel quest dumb as bricks for now good reason! I like the game but i has some sever annoying flaws. (I wish I could add a .5 to my score though) Expand

Dragon Ball Xenoverse has some of the worst design decisions ever embedded into a videogame. There are no menus, the story mode's difficulty is all over the place, and the game's best aspect, creating characters, is locked behind hours and hours of frustrating play. It certainly has its moments and the core fighting mechanics are great, but the game falls flat in too many other areas to be standout title.

For Dragon Ball fans, there is plenty to love about Xenoverse. I loved the story and character creation, and the loot and mission systems made playing through a joy that bordered on a compulsion. All those aspects add up to the best Dragon Ball game ever made, but the 3D fighting and movement knock the game down just enough to set it squarely behind Super Dragon Ball Z as my favorite game based on my favorite franchise.
