It feels limited some times, something we can understand taking into account that it comes from a 3DS version. However, if you’re a fan of the subseries created by MercurySteam and if you haven’t played before, it’s a game you should play.

A straight port but in HD of the classic and epic 3DS cult action adventure game. An interesting buy option for newcomers.

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate HD is a competent porting of the second entry in the reboot orchestrated by Mercury Steam.

Upgraded visuals, controls, and cutscenes really match the grandeur of the Mirror of Fate's scale, score, and story. It harkens back to the glory days of classic NES games in the series, while implementing the exploration of the Metroidvania games and Lords of Shadow's combat engine very nicely. The new Boss Rush mode and Trophies add a much needed amount of replay value. If you can get over the fact that this isn't the Symphony of the Night 9.0, you're in for a great time. Full Review »

Now about the gameplay, for this episode they decided to go back at the roots of the saga with a 2D view that will please the old fans of the franchise, its combat system works just fine although it could be better (not a lot of combo, the powers and items weren't very fun to use), also some sequences offers some welcomed variety to the game.
Last but not least, it took me about 10 hours to finish the game in hard mode and you can add some replay value (with a new difficulty, the boss rush mode and the hunt for secrets), very good for the price.
To sum up, a very fun game all the way through , but not a gem, and a must have for the Lords Of Shadow aficionados.
