I think CoD has gotten stale, Battlefield adds a lot of interesting new twists. I was planning to buy CoD MW3 but it sounds like the staleness continues and I'm happy with Battlefield 3 so will probably pass. I really enjoy the class system used online and the gameplay overall. The maps are far more interesting than CoD maps have been. The perks for each class are divided up wisely and gives you the option to play strategically with your teammates if you want, but you can still go all Leroy Jenkins if the mood strikes and still have a lot of fun.

There are some bugs for sure, but nothing that ruins the game. I have yet to see a guy shooting me from underneath the map or inside a boulder like what always happens with CoD. I will be looking forward to patch updates to correct some things, especially Team Deathmatch spawn points. There is one particular map in Deathmatch where you can't spawn without being shot in the back 5 seconds later, but most of the other maps don't have as much of an issue because they're pretty large. The Battlelog web site is useful for keeping track of leveling/unlocks/stats and adds to the experience quite nicely. Overall I really enjoy the game and glad I made the switch.

Battlefield 3 is a game hoping to achieve respect by all gamers and game reviewers. I think it does. But it falls flat in some areas of the game.
The campain for Battlefield 3 feels half assed and unrealistic. The whole thing feels like black ops and has no creativity what so ever, just go in a room and shoot people.
I could tell that DICE didnt focus as much on the singleplayer as it did

Great game. To be honest, I don't buy shooters for the story. So therefore this is based entirely on the multiplayer aspect. The multiplayer is rewarding and fun, but it takes actually skill and strategy to win a game.

Bottom line, this is the big boy shooter, Yeh MW3 will get all the hype and sales. But technically, acclaim and design. Battlefield 3 wins.

Graphics are stunning, Sound is well... DICE. Epic as usual.

A few online bugs here and there, but that is to be expected with a big FPS ip. A patch which I'm sure is incoming will fix most things. Then we have the map-pack which is getting released in december.

A good shooter. Which is why it is a 7. While realism has improved dramatically, and it is visually appealing, it only gets a 7 because it is just another shooter. Nothing innovative in the entertainment part of the game, it is just a realistic shooter.

MW3 is great, solid single player and solid multi player, but BF3 is solid single player and amazing multi player. MW3 feels a little sluggish in its movements to me when put next to BF3.
If you can own both......do it, both have something to bring to the table. If you can only afford 1, my pick is BF3 hands down! Its a more polished package.

Overall great game, graphics are pretty good considering the scope of everything. I think it's pretty amazing they can create a world for a FPS to play in that is so large, and yet the graphics are as good as they are on the current crop of ageing consoles. There are some minor faults in the game, it's not perfect at all, but it brings a level of game play that wasn't seen previously on the market. the Call of Duty franchise is awesome, but it's becoming long in the tooth and nothing shows it more then playing the new MW3 and BF3 back to back. WM3 plays just like the previous versions, it looks the same, game play is basically the same, nothing really changes, which isn't a bad thing, it just isn't good enough. While BF3 isn't perfect it makes a giant leap in graphics and game play, not to mention the scope of everything in the game. The game is HUGE compared to the other FPS out there, and that's what sets this a part from the other guys. WM3 plays like an action game, while BF3 plays like a much more serious grown up version of WM3 that rewards team work, and yet still allows you to be Rambo at the same time.

I was excited for this game. The beta somewhat disappointed me with it's glitches, but EA assured us that they had been fixed for the retail game. They lied. From the offset I have been plagued with glitches. Sometimes I couldn't get past cinematics, and there was one joke of a bug where enemy soldiers could walk on water. I found the story pretty boring and short, even for FPS standards

Its multiplayer is the most enjoyable, visually pleasing experience. Its not without its faults, little things like objective markers take up a little too much space on screen, the aiming needs a little tweaking, and some players expected a little more destruction (well the can look forward to what that little team at DICE who did the Back to Karkand maps because they have promised full on destruction so can't wait for that), but these faults are completely overshadowed by how good the rest of the game is, the sound, the graphics, the destruction (thats there), the maps, the teamwork, the add ons, how every weapon acts differently with every different attachment... its just the ducks nuts... I went out this morning (Tues 8th November) to buy MW3, and I did... brought it home, saw it was THE worst game/biggest disappointment I've ever experienced, took it out of my ps3 put it back in its box and returned it traded it in for batman, so hopefully someone buys that game second hand just so those money grubbing d**ks don't get any more money...

On PC Battlefield 3 is incredible. On the PS3, though, it feels clunky. They tried so hard to NOT be CoD that they avoided using some of the things that CoD mastered in multiplayer gameplay. I will keep playing it, but only when I need a break from MW3.

Well let me start with multi-player (where Battlefield 3 shines): The maps are huge and varied with decent graphics and frame-rate. Unlike COD you can play with little experience of on-line play. Granted you will die numerous times and not kill too many yourself BUT with COD you do get 'owned'. The points system and levelling and numerous types of multiplayer is great, along with vehicles. I generally don't enjoy multiplayer FPS but this I love.

Single player however overall is terrible in my opinion. This is not related to story, that is pretty decent, or graphics, they are cool. It is due to general playability. Firstly I have the enemy within my guns sights (very clearly too I may add) and I shoot but nothing!!! This has happened numerous times. Secondly the enemy can be so far away and dead accurate that you can barely see them and they kill you in no time. This is fine occasionally but it has been this way through most of the campaign. I am sorry but these issues especially, the aiming one, ruined these game for me. BF:BC2 single player was better along with COD MW1 & 2.

Overall it is a bit Jekyll and Hyde but due to being a (mainly) single player gamer I will have to give this a 6.

I stopped buying MW after the mess that MW2 had become. infinity just rewraps the same bullsh*t add a fresh coat of paint and shoves it at you an call it innovation. When BC2 came out it was like no other game. You could do and destroy anything!! You think you're gonna camp here for the whole game? WRONG, there's no wall behind you! Drive tanks, fly ATTACK helicopters, 4 wheelers, UAVs and turrents! You name it BC2 provided and then. BF3 was announced and we got word of all the wonders that would befall us in this game. And show the COD franchise how real developers and networks stand by their fanbase. I refer to all this is to emphasize how utterly disappointed I am in BF3. I realized from Beta that this is NOT the BF I knew and loved. This felt cheap. And EA chose the absolute worst map to allure players from COD as it was not displaying BF's to its truest. We all know of the annoying network outages and glitches that happened in the beta stage and EA assured us that what we were playing was not the final product so I shrugged it off. Now that the final game was released I hoped it would be the same as BF2, IT IS NOT. Those users saying the game play is the same WRONG. The game play is no where near as smooth as BF2 and that game could have been smoother. This game is a pretty mess. I will only be referring to Multilayer as Campaign got me so angry I had to take 2 xanax (I think I've made my point here). From a simple thing as the inability to walk over a tiny object on the ground to the daunting task of getting out of a room, this game has become what I hoped it wouldn't... COD with vehicles. EA if you cant do something right, dont bother doing it at all. How is it that you can shoot a person square dead in the head emptying TWO clips one from you main and the secondary after switching to you side arm and your opponent will have enough time to stop. turn. shoot you once and you are dead.? EA can you PLEASE explain this cause I am stumped. I have had folks massacre me on 0%. 0%!!!!! I was killed by a ghost y'all!!!! Why can't I cook a grenade?? Why is player mute either you mute the entire squad or none so if I have a team member that is actually benefiting to the team and a kid screaming at his mommy I have to deal with all of that or mute them all? HOW do I end up in an entirely different class when a new game starts? WHY the **** does it take to goddamn long to get up from prone!!??? WHY all the theatrics to knife someone??!!! You have to ensure NO ONE is around you if you're knifing someone cause the length of time it takes to do that crap will get you shot! I have to wonder if EA just focused all their energy into just making the game look pretty and sounding fantastic and just left out the heart of the game. Cause that is what I got from the store. So thanks EA, thanks for ruining a great game! And replacing it with cheap, marketing MESS! Xoxo!â Expand

ForOk, so this is my first time with a Battlefield Game (even though I've played every CoD since the very first - and yes, I hate Black Ops) and I gotta say I'm surprised at some of the really really bad reviews. The campaign is fairly solid. I mean the story is nonesense (isn't it always with these games?) but that doesn't detract too much from a lot of the good things the games does. For a start it does look stunning. All the PC fanboys will moan that, against their high powered rigs, it doesn't compare but on console there few better looking games (think Crysis 2 calibre). It's all about the lighting; it gives the whole campaign atmosphere and tension and the sheer scale will leave you on occasion just looking round and taking it all in. The missions are varied so there's plenty to keep you guessing and it all seems a little more like you're involved in a military operation (rather than Modern Warfare's one man army scenario). But there are bugs. Some seriously, annoying bugs. First off, the enemy AI is fairly useless. They'll run around on predefined animation sequences and rarely seem to react to what's ACTUALLY happening. Second, they only seem to shoot at you, not your squad. In one level I tested this by hiding out of sight and watching my squad member (who was stood out in the open). Not only did he not get shot (even though bullets were raining down on the wall behind which I was hiding) he didn't fire at the enemy. At all. They also know where you are no matter how covertly you crawl behind cover. In a game that looks so stunning daft things like this stick out very quickly. Alot has also been made about the fact that MW3 runs at a solid 60fps and BF3 (sadly) doesn't. This is particularly obvious when you're watching vehicles - the animation on occasion almost seems stuttered. Personally I didn't enjoy the sniper moments - it felt too arcadey and non responsive. Add to that the fact that some enemies cannot be shot mid way through an animation (eg. climbing a wall, opening a door, exiting a car) and it can really get annoying. But, it is challenging, different and (bugs aside) enjoyable. Multiplayer is excellent. Far fewer bugs (clearly this is a multiplayer game and shouldn't be purchased for the campaign - rent for the single player, essential purchase for multiplayer) and again, the lighting is spectacular. Now, being a MW fan, I'm used to things being accessible and (dare I say it) easy to master. BF3 multiplayer, from the moment you pick it up, is a beast that demands time to master. This isn't a 'I've got 30 minutes while the missus is away, lets bosh on some free for all and rack up 100 kills' experience. This feels more like a 'battle' in comparison to MW's 'fight'. It's on a far grander scale and teases you with so many different opportunities (take a jet, take a chopper, take an APC, etc). I guess that's an achilles heel to a certain degree; as a novice you're thrown in with endless choices against (mostly - at least it was for me) guys that are pretty damn good! It's easy to get intimidated by the fact that the jets are tough to control and the fact that it can take a few minutes of wandering round a vast map before you see someone only to get shot immediately. That's the crux of why MW sells; it's a pick up and play fight to the death. BF is an art that needs to be learnt and, unfortunately, it doesn't teach (a tutorial, a 'me versus bots mode' or even a 'practice zone' for the vehicles - especially the jets - would be great). BF3 is what it is; tough, uncompromising and damn frustrating but the rewards for mastering it are unparalelled. It's just gonna take hours of frustration to get there. CAMPAIGN - 7/10 (good but buggy), MULTIPLAYER - 9/10 (great but tries too hard to be inaccessible). OVERALL - 8/10. Expand

But the online multiplayer blows all other FPS military sims out of the water. Multiplayer maps are varied enough to keep both the run and gunner and the sniping camper entertained for months. Couple this with interesting game modes not found in other mil-FPS's and you have a recipe for game longevity that will make the $60 price tag seem like a bargain.

I loved MW2. I loved it. But the features and vastness of this title make MW2 seem two generations behind, not just two years.

This game will give many, many hours of fun. The gameplay is near perfect. The menus are poor and the way they flicker every time you alter something is utter rubbish. Also Noshahr Canals map is the most 1 sided unbalanced map I have ever seen. Despite these minor niggles BF3 online is everything I had hoped for, and is a truly great game. Expand

After single player campaign and 30 hours in multiplayer I have to say that Battlefield is worse than Bad Company 2 in almost every aspect. I've been waiting for excellent BF2 successor, but excellent is only EA marketing :(

Here's another one of my 'just beyond first impression' reviews. I almost didn't buy BF3 because the PS3 beta SUCKED so bad, but now I am SO GLAD I gave it a chance. A little background- I never played the earlier Battlefield games, played MW2 a little bit, and sunk over 8 DAYS in Black Ops, so I compare BF3 to COD a lot here. Also, if you are looking for a campaign review, look elsewhere because I haven't played it and probably won't. My first impression of the graphics were 'meh'. In all fairness, I guess all console graphics are underwhelming after coming fresh off of Uncharted 3 though. But the more I played, the more I appreciated BF3....the lighting, the sun in the eyes, smoke, fog, rain, etc are all stellar. I got killed once because I was just standing there in awe admiring the corpse of some poor camper. I'd just blasted the back of his head and the blood was splattered against the rocks he was hiding behind in a level of detail unseen so far on the PS3. Just beautiful. After playing for nearly an hour I was questioning my purchase, but after 4 hours of deathmatch I can safely say the conversion from COD fanboy is complete! If the early reports are true about MW3 not really upping the ante, then 6 months from now this will be the military shooter real players are playing. The housewives and the kids will be left to duke it out on COD through their pink heart shaped reticle. For better or worse, there isn't much customization here. If you want to play dress up with your character like its a freakin Barbie doll I recommend the Uncharted3 experience...kill people with a sweet fedora and then do a dance. I'm not really into that. If you want to enter the closest thing ever to a real warzone then BF3 is the way to go. Once the match begins is where BF3 really shines. The sound is also incredible. If I could rate it 11 in that category I would. Everyone gives EA servers crap, but unlike BlackOps, I didn't get disconnected once, and experienced zero lag. I was worried about 2 things on this game- that there would be too many campers and too many snipers. Unless things change, neither has been an issue for me. In fact, I'd say there is much more of both in Black Ops. Based on what I'd heard about BF2, I was also worried that the maps would be too big and I'd have trouble finding the action. No problem there- I had more action than Ron Jeremy. A couple of times I got shot in the back immediately after spawning. It also spawned me behind a solid enemy position once or twice & I got some cheap kills of my own. 95% of the time though, spawning is a non-issue. Overall, it was a welcome relief to not constantly be shot in the back as happened oh so many times in Black Ops. Knife kills aren't as fluid as BLops, but look cooler. Killcams are also not as good. Much like the useless Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3 killcams, you ID the killer, but it doesn't really help you see where you went wrong or give away the killer's position as well as COD. Another minor gripe is that I couldn't figure out how to easily leave the lobby. I had no reason to, but if there had been a bunch of douchebags blasting their hiphop through the mics it would be nice to quickly back out and join another match. Maybe this option is there and I'm just not familiar enough with the interface yet. Expand

Finally a game that needs some skill again. For anyone else who doesn't hit anything because of that, grab yourself a copy of MW3.

First of all its good to know that any game that has flashbacks now copies Call of Duty (i sense a meme). The flashbacks from Black Ops were during, not an Interrogation/Debriefing surrounding and interesting conspiracy, but a TORTURE of a US marine surrounding a plot that has been used for ages, so stop trying to say the plot of sleeper agents with codes stored in their heads is original because its not. Also the plot of Black Ops was nonsensical and was basically a Michael Bay film with not so pretty graphics. I understand this game is going to get compared to CoD, its what the entire flame-war has been about, but the fact of the matter is that CoD has grown stale and has a plot that my nine year old brother predicted when i started MW2. The last good CoD in the series was CoD 4 (I have been playing CoD since the beginning so i am not a fan-boy so don't start with that). Its just that myself and many other gamers have grown tired of the same rehashed game over and over and want something new. This is where Battlefield 3 comes in to fill the gap. I'll start with the campaign since this is where I here the most gripes.
CAMPAIGN: This game has a VERY solid campaign, not one of the most original plots, but it was done extremely well. The story is believable, engrossing and full of tense moments that really get you on your toes. A lot of people seem to say that you can't get Graphics and Playability in one package and I call those people stupid. The PS3 version has fantastic graphics, I am very pleased with the way it turned out and understand why DICE said they play the PS3 version in the office everyday. The level when your teammate deploys flares in the apartment is a true justification to that, along with many more jaw-dropping levels (Thunder Run). I understand fully that Battlefield is a series not known for Single-player, but since Bad Company 1&2 they are learning to create an intriguing story that really does justice to a good campaign. The only issue I've had with campaign is that when the game saves, it sometimes freezes briefly, but comes right back. The way the campaign is also geared towards knowing that you are not Rambo-Jesus is great too. They really make you feel like you die quite quickly and that cover IS needed to survive. Also as opposed to Black Ops which had some of the worst AI I've ever seen in a game, both the enemies and team-mates feel smart enough to challenge and help you. Enemies move from cover to cover and pick and choose targets while your fellow squad mates will actually kill the enemies with you. Another thing that I have heard is that the directions in the campaign are not clear enough. Well...I guess that for the average CoD player being 12 years old, it may be a little hard to understand that when you team-mate says SHOOT THE LIGHTS he really does mean SHOOT THE LIGHTS, I mean seriously I have read so many posts saying, "I'm stuck on the sniper level i don't understand what he wants me to do". Its like wow really are you serious there's a prompt in the top left and there are subtitles so either you dumb, or just illiterate. I had a great time with the single player and really felt the power behind the vehicles, guns and explosions. The graphics and lighting are fantastic and the story is engrossing and fun. Don't skip the single player. MULTIPLAYER:
This is where the game truly shines and delivers the full package. The graphics are phenomenal and the gun-play is fantastic. The fact that CoD's only argument is 60fps hold no water at all. The frame rate is still smooth and jitter free even with so much action happening in one area. The multiplayer suffers from a few hiccups with lag and unbalanced weaponry, but DICE (actually caring about customer support) has already acknowledged the problems and is working to fix them as I type. The maps of Battlefield 3 are absolutely enormous and could fit all of CoD's maps into one. They are beautifully designed to soot all play-styles from Jet and Helicopter Pilot, Tank commander, Infantry grunt, Support gunner, Demolitionist, Sniper and much more depending on how you play. There are still plenty of buildings to destroy and to decimate so don't fret, the tradition of destruction remains strong. The guns all feel amazing and handle differently. Also not every gun is suitable for every map so adjust your class accordingly, and thanks to the traditional loadout screen after every death you can always change your class and weapon set so you never feel screwed. Again cover is a must so don't expect to play this game like CoD and end up MVP(kills don't matter, points come from working as a team) shocking I know. Battlefield 3 is a must buy for any true FPS fan tired of the mundane. You cant go back once your hooked.

I just want to play COD and this makes me happy, Anyways, my review is solely based on multi player. I do not really care about single player campaign. I bought BF3 for multiplayer only and i would be happy not to see single player at all if it meant additional multiplayer maps in the game. BF3 is certainly the best BF version on consoles to date. Graphics are solid but animations feel like taken straight from Bad Company 2. Overall not as good as one would expect from watching all advertising material from EA but still the best on consoles to date. There is bunch of small changes, tweaks that I like in BF3. Addition of prone position into the game is a big bonus in my mind. Overall I find multi player game play better then in previous BF on consoles. I like urban setting of some maps. Smaller maps offer tight space and fierce fighting with 24 players. Truly tons of fun. However 24 players on some larger maps just feels not enough. Battlefield 3 is not great departure from previous BF games but it is non the less the best BF on the consoles to date. I hope EA and Dice will not make the same mistake that it did with BC2, namely releasing "new maps" which are the same maps already released with new game modes. This was a huge turn off for me. I am willing to pay $$ for truly new maps, with new settings and graphics. New map packs made me happy for months with COD and this is the reason why i got rid off BC2 but still have Black Ops. I also hope that EA will not charge $15 per map pack like Activision because this is seriously too much money for a game add on. I highly recommend for you to pick up BF3. My final score is 8 out of 10 because BF3 for PC is the superior version of the game and that version deserves 10 out of 10. PS3 version is 8 out 10 for me. Expand

Yes, its not 64 players, but you know what? Its one hell of a fun game in multiplayer. Heres some positives: I'm actually very surprised they included the option to browse servers which is very convenient. The sound? DICE is spectacular in their design and how much it immerses you in the entire experience. Graphics? Very detailed and well done. I love how the vehicles catch fire and explode, the walls crumble after being hit with and RPG, sunlight blooms and rain glistens when caught at different angles. I could go on and on but attention to detail is what is so awesome in the visual presentation. I enjoy the fact that you can be such a force in this game when you help your team. It makes the experience so satisfying when you revive someone, or fix your buddies tank after it gets hit, or be a gunner for a humvee driver. Teamwork is essential to success. Now some negatives: The Campaign is not bad by any means, but I just wish there would have been more freedom in the way you were able to tackle each level. The level of scale is great, but is hampered by the fact that the player is so restricted in where they can go and how to approach each mission. Co-op is fun, but can only be played online and I was surprised that only a few levels were available to play, but it is enjoyable. In Multiplayer I have minor compaints, such as inconsistant communication with my teammates. My voice as well as theirs would break up badly to the point where it was pointless to even try to talk to one another. I wish you could exit a match at anytime as well instead of having to wait for a match to start. All in all this is a fantastic game, and of course the Multiplayer is the star. BF3 has taken a major down turn in this area . the story mode pretty much just sucks . you pretty much just live through flash backs of the main character as he tells his story to two guys .the story mode almost feels like its trying to be more like COD MW ... dull , boring and void of fun . the bright spot is the online mode . if you liked BF1 and 2 online you will have no problem getting into BF3 . its a very team based . the maps are huge and look great and are alot of fun . people like to complain this is such a massive Camping game . well its focus is on realism , sorry to disappoint you but the military soldiers dont run out all over the place and shoot like a bunch of morons . if you want to run around like a chicken with your head cut off shooting every thing that moves go play COD. down sides of the online would be that when you first start the game you feel way under powered compared to higher level players . which feels like BS and probubly wouldnt be a major issue if you didnt level up so damn slow. over all though the online is alot of fun . The game is a mix of Good and Disappointing. Overall online games seem too slow (30 minutes per game, with the top scorers usually only getting 20~ish kills). So you spend way too much time running with little actual action.

I'm also not at all impressed with the menu system. For example, you can't quit a server between battles, which means you actually have to start a match in order to leave. This means that sometimes entire teams leave right as a battle starts, leaving you alone to defend until new people join. Also the leveling system is weird, and only allows one pre-set per class, so there is no way to build different presets for different situations.

Overall, it is a decent game, but it is really hard to get into and enjoy as much as previous games in the franchise and genre.

The AI is weak and while I have no complaints about the game being linear, but the way in which certain battles play out are quite poor and I quickly lost faith in the campaign. I played on hard difficulty in a hope to compensate for the AI. The first couple of missions I was impressed with, until i reached 'Guillotine', which I found very dull, and was disappointed in endless wave after wave of infinite enemies until a certain point on the map had been reached (I'm guessing that this was an issue in earlier levels but didn't experience it)...from that point I lost interest, as I felt each battle after this point I was unsure whether there was a set number of enemies I had to defeat or simply reach a HUD marker to stop the respawining. This kind of game play is really unrewarding and unsatisfying. The story on the whole I think was pretty good, people criticise it...and yeah it's not that original but I mean how to you make a modern fps story original? It's all been done before..but the way DICE deliver the experience is damn good apart from the negative points mentioned above. Tone and atmosphere at times are spot on.

Onto the multiplayer. A straight 9 here! It's got scale, epic battles and the Frostbite 2 engine really shines. I'm a CoD bloke really, but I'm sold on this title. Vehicle combat is great, the classes seem pretty even and all have their uses, there is a counter for pretty much everything, so it doesn't feel unbalanced and no quick scoping! (that I've seen). Definitely worth a purchase. Best game I've played in my opinion since MW2.

And all the people I've seen complaining about the rental not containing multiplayer, don't be such a tight arse and just buy the **** game.

When you fire a real gun you should be able ADS and follow your target and I find this really difficult. If I turn the sensitivity up my character turns too fast and makes it hard for me to move... 5) Where is the remote control chopper from BC2? 6) The game lacks direction, especially in the bigger multiplayer maps... a good example is that I'm 9 hours in and have yet to find/fly a jet. 7) Quickmatch takes like 6 tries to find a game and the load/death timers seem a tad too long. 8) You know the games in trouble when the reload animation works about 66% of the time... Overall the game is rushed, flawed and full of glitches, most may seem insignificant but when you combine them all... just REALLY hurts the game. I agree with killagoose, I too did a review and said how much of an improvement this game is over Bad Company 2, and I highly recommend it. I don't understand as I notice a lot of the positive reviews are being deleted. Why are the high reviews being taken down and not any of the low ones that are obviously bias towards Call of Duty???????

    Conclusion:
The game has potential. If they fix the in-game communications, the squad and team issues, somehow improve the visibility of enemies, and remove the bugs which plague the game's campaign mode, then it might actually be enjoyable. Until then, it's frustrating and incomplete, and far from the masterpiece that one-eyed fans of the series have touted it as. Starting with 10, 2 points off for not being able to see who's shooting you, 2 points off for the bugs and freezing, 1 point off for the communications issues, and 1 point off for the squad/team issues. 4/10.

Brace yourself for endless campers lying prone in every possible location, waiting to dust you the moment you walk around a corner. Some of the maps are set up with choke points where you end up in a large group Mexican Standoff lobbing grenades at each other. Boring.

Some of the Bad Company 2 flaws still exist. Since when can a shotgun kill a human in body armor from 50 yards away? Lame. Getting fragged the moment you spawn somewhere? Check. (This didn't seem to be a problem in BC 2). And how is it you can be blinded by a flashlight *in broad daylight*??? Seriously? Aiming seems terribly twitchy as well.

Graphically the game may be more detailed than Bad Company 2, but it's taken on a decidedly more cartoonish appearance with artificially-saturated color and soldier character models that somehow look and move less realistically than in Bad Company 2.

Most annoying of all is the inability to kill the voiceover sound. This option was available in Bad Company 2, but not in BF3. Yeah, I want to listen to voiceover actors screaming about getting "f**ked in the a**" (true quote from the game) constantly. Thanks DICE, thanks a lot.

I'll be selling this game the first chance I get. What a disappointment. I was hoping DICE would stick with the "Not Modern Warfare" model, but instead they've followed that juvenile game's lead and catered to that game's typical buyer.

This is a next gen shooter there are things in this game that no one has done before. Tell ya what stuff MW3 and go for this because this is officially the best game ever. Sorry Deus Ex but you have been beaten. The single player story has a real black ops vibe to it but in a fresh modern setting you are Sargent Henry Blackburn a first recon marine that has 'information on a terrorist that the CIA need. You are sent into flashbacks like black ops into modern warfare like settings with big buildings and even deserts in spec ops mission not the best game story ever but is has heart and some twists to keep you engaged. At first you might think the games controls are clunky but then you realize they are really fluid and better than other FPS configs. But I must add that this game really shines in it's engine. Frostbite 2 is the new benchmark for FPS and it's detail is incredible from the sound to the graphics and this is the best looking game I have ever seen everything has detail from the dust and water on your face to the small rocks and pieces of destroyed buildings. Each gun really has their own distinct sound with a hearty kick in them the sounds of explosions in the background to the close up firefights. But the most impressive thing about the engine is the animation finally an FPS where there is such things as hands and feet when you are moving prone you are actually moving. DICE said at the EB Expo that they borrowed the animation and physics from FIFA 12 and it shows. The gunplay is solid and you really have to shoot the enemy hard because they are pretty tough. When you shoot them they grab where they have been hit then crumble to the ground. But the best bit about Battlefield is the freakin fantastic multiplayer. I have to say I suck at this multiplayer. Im getting better but still I love it it brings out strategy and you are fighting not just for xp but because of the feel the glory of getting a headshot or the hilarity of you crashing your helicopter into the sea and killing your squad with you. To unlock gear you have to play that class to unlock attachments and weapon or gadget upgrades for that class this encourages you to use all your classes and unlocking the next bit of gear at the same time unlocking specializations for your character. You can even unlock abilities for vehicles it is really addictive and I can see myself playing this for hours. There is a facebook like service online called battlelog where you can create platoons or if your a pc gamer launch matches. It is really helpful but is still doing matinence so I haven't checked it out fully. There is Co-Op but I haven't tested that either. After all this I don't think you can compare Battlefield and MW3 because they are different games. COD is a fantastic raw shooter but Battlefield go's in depth to the shooter genre so really when someone asks you the question MW3 or Battlefield you say both because they are different games. This game is an excellent multiplayer and singleplayer game that has set a new benchmark for all games this is an undoubtedly 10 out of 10 game it is a must play. Expand

This game is massive sandbox of FPS-joy. It is like having your own amusement park packed into your console. There is so much variation of play-styles available yet Dice has managed to keep it in fine balance.

For those not sure if they will like this, if you've enjoyed any of these games -Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare, Battlefield 2, Bad Company 2, Red Orchestra, and GTA:IV - I really feel that BF3 has taken it to another level. I bring GTA:IV into the equation as BF3 has so much mayhem and depth for all of the vehicles presented plus you get a sense of freedom from the large scale.

I think some of the complaints have merit (ie. some graphics issues, overly bright flashlights, ho-hum single player) and I think DICE could address some of these. But when you look at the full scope of the multiplayer it doesn't take away from what there is. I was actually quite surprised that they were able to get the PS3 to pull this off. The bad size is, lack of resolution, lower textures, nowhere near as realistic lighting effects (but still good), no anti-aliasing. I know the PC Version must be incredible, but the game mechanics are intact on the console. The animation look identical and some of the modelling is quite good given the PS3s limitations. Also the lower player count is okay, but DICE have ensured the maps are balanced. Some map areas may be a bit smaller, but be reassured, these maps are still huge even compared to Bad Company 2. There may be even some benefits of having the console version (albeit minor) such as having an integrated server browser/filter. You need to use the server browser to get into the Hardcore modes or smaller infantry frays. CoD players should give this a go - you can even have infantry only servers if you want. What I like about BF3 (and Bad Company 2 for that matter) over CoD is the destruction, suppressive fire, and battle effects that really effect how you play. You don't feel like you are fighting in rat maze.

Hard to believe Destructoid gave this a 7.5 and gave Killzone 3 a 9?! KZ3 was graphically and sonically beautiful but unfortunately marred by spawn camping madness, godlike radar, predictable maps, and unbalanced sniper class. Its multiplayer has nothing on BF3 or even BC2. Also, those who enjoy tactical shooters or realistic shooters such as ArmA2 may find they really like BF3, as though not nearly realistic tactically, BF3s immersive elements of visual, audio and 'battlefield' effects bring a level of psychological immersion not seen before. To me this is almost the perfect game. I don't think Dice have 'sold out' or been tainted by EA or big money. If anything, they've both suffered and succeeded for being so ambitious.

Those not wishing to shell out $1000 or more for a new game rig will find that BF3 on the PS3 will tide you over - until next year or after, when even mid-range PCs deliver the graphical guts required to render this game in its full glory. BF3 comes just at the right time with winter around the corner. I'm tempted by MW3 as well, but really, the amount of gaming hours available in BF3 are staggering - there are probably 100s of hours here, and with new maps on their way, a massive tech-tree of unlocks, this has the potential to be a seriously dangerous habit.

Battlefield 3 by far provides the best graphics on the ps3, it is truly unthinkable given that ps3's technology is more than 5 years old. Intense singleplayer with maximum destructible possibilities and by far the most realistic game yet.

One of the best games of the year, the only other FPS that challenges this is Battlefield 2. Now its MW3 turn to play their hand. The graphics, and gameplay are very, very good. I have had no problems with this game at all.

COD is great also, these are two different games. Just depends on what you're looking for, and this is the type of game that I prefer. Actual battles that depend on tactics and team work, just like in real life. Don't believe it when some people say "oh the maps are too big, there is no action", the maps are perfect and there is PLENTY of action.

Don't believe in perfect scores for games so a 9 it is.

So fun!! Everyone who bought the game for the single player doesn't understand what Battlefield's about........ the multiplayer is ridiculously fun. Graphics are better than the beta, and dunno what all the complaints about the aiming are; I don't have any.

The singleplayer is not that great and it is comparable to COD in aspects of linearity and blockbuster type action and yet I'd say superior writing and atmosphere. CO-OP is a bit better with 6 missions that are pretty fun with a friend.

What it shines with is multiplayer. You just don't find a shooter with team orientated framework built into its design anymore with the last one I remember being Team Fortress 2, although it's not that heavy. It's balanced and skillful with deep weapon progression and long term investments in unlocking new gear and ranks. Vehicles are an important force and staple on the field, but not instant death machines and they also require some work to use properly. You can be 4 different classes and all of them have helpful items for your team and you play in squads and feel part of a unit instead of people in a map killing each other.

I love Battlefield and the unique experiences it offers in a sea of modern shooting games. You just won't find anything else like it unless you like simulators like ARMA.

I can't think of a way to finish this, but I really recommend picking it up.

The single player is offensively horrible and a flagship example of EA's lack of understanding for narrative. But when it comes to Battlefield it's not about the narrative--it's about the online multiplayer and its amazing!

Battlefield 3's story campaign and multiplayer are two completely different games. They have the same graphic engines, controls, weaponry, and even locations--but they are nothing alike in terms of concept and enjoyment. EA/Dice attempt a low-key narrative about a soldier that uh...sits in a room and talks about past experiences that have marginally anything to do with a terrorist plot 8 hours from execution in New York City. This soldier informs his "keepers" that a man named Solomon is behind the attack. They aggressively...because aggression means drama right?...interrogate the solider about where he first heard of Solomon. We then flash back to the first real level--the vary familiar earth quake level from early demonstrations. Here, we undergo sniper scenarios, fend off an onslaught of stupid yet deadeye bad guys and deal with an IED. Not one time is the name Solomon mentioned.

If you decide to play through the campaign (I did for the trophies) then accept that the narrative just isn't there. The most important details and most exciting level is actually at the end of the game. Up until then--it's basically a series of tasks that lead to cheap deaths and aggravation. I almost broke my controller in-half more than once. Because Dice thinks good lighting means glares and lens dust don't expect to have the easiest time spotting black-clothed enemies from black backgrounds. My tactic was to stand in the open waiting to be shot so I could trace muzzle flashes to enemy locations. Your AI buddies will take the best shooting locations and then fail to do much damage. And if you take the cover assigned to them, they'll push you out of the way. Now, sharp shooting enemies that don't need to raise their guns to get head shots is one thing--but the fact that you can't trust the game to direct you to your next goal safely is unacceptable. Most the game is spent following a specific soldier. An Icon will appear over their head and you must walk within a few feet in order for the game to progress. This is quite annoying when the soldier is standing in an open field behind no cover and every attempt to reach him leads to another death. Sometimes they're on the other side of a battlefield and every enemy you kill is immediately replaced, making it near impossible to get across without dying. What's worse--the game will ask you to do illogical tasks. In the first full level, you're asked to go up on a bridge that provides no cover and man a light machine gun while all 20 bad guys shoot at you. I died 10 times in a row without even reaching the gun. Finally, I crawled to the gun but accidentally hit reload. By the time I had finished reloading, the commander was already sounding retreat... One mission has you escaping to a plane...but the game won't allow you on until your teammates have boarded first. I didn't realize this till I was blocked from boarding by an invisible wall and shot to death. On my next try--I simply laid down behind some bushes until they called for me to board. It was an absolute miserable experience.

Yet with all these miserable attempts to make exciting scenarios no moment in the single player campaign, was any where as exciting as the many memorable events of online play. I was once involved in a five minute firefight in an alleyway. Our team needed to capture the alley to allow for flanking positions on an MCOM station and the other team obviously needed that not to happen. Rockets flew over head, grenades were thrown back and forth, soldiers were dying and being revived left and right--it was amazingly intense and despite coming out on the losing end, I had more fun in those five minutes than in the entire single player campaign. Makes me wonder why they even bothered. Battlefield 3's online experience is awesome and a great update from Bad Company 2. The graphics are neater (even with PS3 doesn't get the full glory of the PC version) and the gameplay is smoother. The levels are great and allow for a wide variety of strategy and challenge. There's no room for heroes or loners--you need to work together to succeed; communication is key. This is a game for those looking to use tactic and cooperation to win. There's plenty of points to be earned without killing a single enemy (mine mostly come from heals, revives, and base captures.) Of course, that doesn't mean you won't find yourself kicking a little extra ass from one game to the next. If you're looking for a chance to just kill-kill-kill--you may want to look elsewhere. But if you're looking for an in-depth battlefield experience--here it is as the name implies--and it does not disappoint.

Controls are tight and animations are great. Graphics and sound are top notch as we know. Voice acting for the most part is great too. biggest complaint, QTEs. don't like em. never have. GOW is the only game that does them ok, but its because you kind of choose to go into them instead of them being hand fed to you. Multiplayer is huge and fun. A lot of running (conquest) if you don't get a vehicle or a good squad. minor glitches from the beta still present but not as bad. mostly killcam going through the ground. Overall a great buy and am still playing it and will be for the next couple weeks at least. Uncharted will make a dent. You can actually have your back to a wall and go prone, unlike Call Of Duty which will not allow you to do so because there would not be any room for legs, Battlefield3 does and your legs are basically fused into the wall with half you body sticking out, campers delight, the vehicles are not as spectacular as the commercial and "supposed unbiased" reviewers, showed and claimed they were to be, the jet fighter travel at an unbelievable slow speed, its not hard to get a target lock, but hey they have more counter measures than than a single engineer has missiles. the way they fly also looks very abnormal and is far from fluid. Bolt action sniper rifles in the game are so unrealistic, no sniper would ever take his eye off his sights to pull back the bolt, you cant switch rooms during game intermissions, you have to quit back to the main menu, and you can only customize your load outs during the middle of a match, spawn points are done terribly, spawn camping is the worst I've seen since Socom 3 no type of spawn protection at all. Now finally aside from some lag, the occasional error connection message when trying to get into multiplayer, lack of game modes, including a hardcore mode, whats good about the game you say, well ill tell you, i really like how this game uses bi-pods, unlike in COD where its only for show, Battlefield implements them to, my enjoyment, very well. i also like the variety of weapons and equipment for each kit, but its still no "create a class" like COD, that's about it this game does not live up to all the Hype, i wonder how much EA payed for those clearly bias reviews, this is why you cant trust certain media outlets, with all its problems its far from perfect. THIS IS WAR!!! Yes, that is correct, playing Battlefield 3 really shows you what it is like to a part of a war. Without a doubt this is the best MP military shooter this gen. Without a doubt this is the best MP military shooter this gen. The control is the best I have encountered. The shooting and vehicle control is so natural. I have driven almost all the vehicles and they were extremely easy to control. I was afraid to try the helicopter because I had trouble with BFBC2 but to my surprise I lasted 10 minutes flying and strafing the enemy before I got to **** and crashed. Being an Attack Helicopter gunner is pure bliss!! I squad-ed into 2 players that were in an attack helicopter. I was on the machine gun and found out we were being attacked by a jet. Turned and luckily blew the jet out of the air and the next one. While we were waiting for the next jet to come we were strafing soldiers on the ground. The third one got us. Ended up in the water and committed suicide because it was to far to swim! :)

The graphics are right up there with Killzone 3 and Uncharted. They are very detailed and I am so impressed with the new Frostbite 2.0 engine's destruction!! The texture work is amazing for this scope of a game. Everything looks pretty but is still fluid. I haven't noticed any screen tearing which means if there is some the action is so good I don't notice it. The models are some of the best I have seen.

The audio is a major player here. The guns explode true to life. Explosions BOOM and the vehicles sound authentic.

I have to say the maps are fantastic! There are your wide open maps and your closed in maps. The subway map was unreal in it's destruction coming from close combat. Played in many wide open maps and that is were BF3 really shines. So many ways to get back in the action. This saves BF as having to run to the action can take a long time. Squads FTW!

PRONE!! This single addition has made the game more realistic to me. It's been fantastic using it and getting killed by it. I just sit after being killed thinking to myself that's what it would be like in real life. My enemies would go prone in that situation!! Love it! I am also very impressed with the lense fair! I have especially enjoyed the melee kills that are reminiscent to the Brutal Melee kills in Killzone 3. They don't have the Brutal aspect like no gouging the eyes but they do go into a little auto kill while you drive the knife home.

I haven't played the SP yet but I am sure I will enjoy it since it's not the focus of this type of game. I never get my hopes up for SP since BF is all about MP.

I am a little disappointed that the COOP is not full game. This doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe they can fix it in a future patch or DLC.

I did experience some connection issues. It took 5 connection tries to get into a match last night. I have had failures of 2 and 3 connection try attempts on separate occasions. However, once I am connected it's vary stable and I have not been disconnected in 8 matches so far.

I was able to get a copy of the PS3 Limited Edition and cannot wait to get the Back to Karkand DLC! That will be fun going down memory lane!

Battlefield 3 is the epitome of War. This is what it would be like to be involved in a major conflict as far as I am concerned since I have never been in the military. I am thankful the military risks their necks daily for our security as I am only able to do it in fantasy. Thank you men and woman of the military for giving me an environment where I can enjoy awesome media like Battlefield 3!

I'll keep this one short. No-one really cares for the longer reviews that waffle on and bore you to death. But one thing that you will be doing a lot in Battlefield 3 is dying. Because the standard of both the AI in singleplayer and the players in multiplayer are hugely superior to that of other franchises. With hundreds of unlocks, vehicles, and the best sound design and graphicsI'll keep this one short. No-one really cares for the longer reviews that waffle on and bore you to death. Because the standard of both the AI in singleplayer and the players in multiplayer are hugely superior to that of other franchises. With hundreds of unlocks, vehicles, and the best sound design and graphics available to a PS3 user, I'm struggling to see what can actually be better. Sure, the singleplayer could be longer, but that's the joy of Battlefield. You keep playing and playing and playi - oh wait, I'm waffling...
But one feature of this game I will always admire is just how extensive it is. Singleplayer has left me stunned, and wanting to play more. Co-op is like SP but with friends and randomised events changing both tactics and play-styles. Multiplayer is almost faultless. It will be said that this game will fail. But the only failure I can see, is that more people are obnoxious and buy Call of Duty than other games. But then that's also a good thing - it means those who do make the leap of faith and choose the other game are much more professional, better gamers who use team-work and tactics to win. For me, this game, and the series, will always be the one to buy.

The nine multiplayer maps seem to be designed specifically to let players come up with their own creative strategies. Compared to COD, this gives the player a real sense of freedom. There is no such thing as a perfect strategy or a trotten path. [December 2011, p.74]
