This review is only for the online play since I have not played the single player. Dice took the best and funnest shooter available and made almost every aspect of it worse and less fun. The menus all suck, it does not remember your favorite maps so every time you log on you have to re-select what mode and the map that you want to play. All of the weapons are harder ti aim or target, for instance the sniper rifle wanders so much that it is difficult to shoot anything that is not standing still or at short distance. While the maps seem different, most feel exactly the same, most are boring and are too cramped & tight, very few places to feel safe, this is why I don't like modern warfare games, every time you turn a corner there is someone waiting to kill you that you can't possibly know is there. Thanks for ruining my favorite game, I'll trade it in next week for Uncharted 3. Huge disappointment. period. Expand

Yet again another game that takes an excellent franchise and completely stuffs it. I'm currently going through the single player on normal, it would appear that every enemy is an expert marksman and can see round corners, whereas your team-mates (most of whom i would have shot myself a long time ago) appear to fail at hitting a barn door with a banjo. This game is so over-rated! Campaign is poor, multiplayer is fun at first but then you run into everyone using a shotgun that can kill you from 20 foot away. Graphics are great in some area's but then really poor in others and the huge maps are pointless on the PS3 due to the amount of players.

While this may be a decent game, I would not recommend paying any large sum of money for it. In a sad attempt to imitate the blockbuster moments of Modern Warfare 3, all originality is forgotten. As with every shooter there are evil Russians and WMDs. However the single player is not the focus of the game. The multiplayer is decent in that it provides some deep gameplay in large maps. The problem I have with it is the few overpowered weapons and tactics abused by the community. The vehicles are balanced when they aren't taking shots at you from long distance for the entire match, but this is the only way they're used anymore. Many weapons, namely the USAS-12 will have you throwing your controller at the wall. These faults wouldn't effect the experience much except for the simple fact that when you hop into a game, about half the team will be using the same gun with the same attachments, which can take you out of an otherwise immersive game. 6 for sound graphics and deep gameplay, but a poorly written and executed singleplayer and a suite of overpowered/overused weapons that really can take away from the experience. The multiplayer is the main meat, though, and always has been with the Battlefield franchise. Basically speaking, I don't like that either. The matches generally consist of players camping prone in bushes or hiding in shipping containers, but they can't really be blamed for that... Nature of the beast, I suppose. Another annoyance is that a lot of the maps are very tight and don't give you any breathing space. It's a case of; spawn, die, spawn, die, spawn, die... Not so much 'Battlefield' as 'Battleroom'! Ultimately I find Battlefield 3 very frustrating to play. Occasionally a team will pull together or I'll get on a hot streak and I'll have a great, fun match. But that only happens about once every ten games. The rest of the time it becomes a tiresome slog and just isn't fun. And why play a game if it isn't fun? Expand

Not to mention the random "Bad Luck" kills. Also, the PS3 had a plus over the Xbox version: A damn input lag... come on, this worked just fine on the beta, how can it not work now?

Ok, so first off the single player of battlefield 3 is pretty disappointing, the story was pretty predictable and the storytelling was some of the least dramatic or engrossing I have played. 'Between a rock and a hard place' provided some interesting imagery and 'comrades' must be my favourite level but really the single player offering here is poor. However the multiplayer experienceis much better I have had no problems finding matches and the option to use a server browser makes finding my kind of games far easier, everything in the multiplayer game seems to work very well and though it can be frustrating at times I feel that this is due to the inherent competetive nature of online shooter rather than any flaw with the game. My only real complaint here is the quality teamplay capabilities, I have only been able to form parties of up to 4 (I believe this is intentional) which is much smaller than I would like in addition to this our group was often split up apon joining matches often onto opposing teams. The quality of voice communication also leaves some to be desired it is often difficult to understand squadmate and you can only communicate with your squad. For this I must dock battlefield points. Overall though with a solid online component it would be difficult to view this as anything but a good buy for an fps fan. Expand

When you fire a real gun you should be able ADS and follow your target and I find this really difficult. If I turn the sensitivity up my character turns too fast and makes it hard for me to move... 5) Where is the remote control chopper from BC2? 6) The game lacks direction, especially in the bigger multiplayer maps... a good example is that I'm 9 hours in and have yet to find/fly a jet. 7) Quickmatch takes like 6 tries to find a game and the load/death timers seem a tad too long. 8) You know the games in trouble when the reload animation works about 66% of the time... Overall the game is rushed, flawed and full of glitches, most may seem insignificant but when you combine them all... just REALLY hurts the game. The single player is offensively horrible and a flagship example of EA's lack of understanding for narrative. But when it comes to Battlefield it's not about the narrative--it's about the online multiplayer and its amazing!

Battlefield 3's story campaign and multiplayer are two completely different games. They have the same graphic engines, controls, weaponry, and even locations--but they are nothing alike in terms of concept and enjoyment. EA/Dice attempt a low-key narrative about a soldier that uh...sits in a room and talks about past experiences that have marginally anything to do with a terrorist plot 8 hours from execution in New York City. This soldier informs his "keepers" that a man named Solomon is behind the attack. They aggressively...because aggression means drama right?...interrogate the solider about where he first heard of Solomon. We then flash back to the first real level--the vary familiar earth quake level from early demonstrations. Here, we undergo sniper scenarios, fend off an onslaught of stupid yet deadeye bad guys and deal with an IED. Not one time is the name Solomon mentioned.

If you decide to play through the campaign (I did for the trophies) then accept that the narrative just isn't there. The most important details and most exciting level is actually at the end of the game. Up until then--it's basically a series of tasks that lead to cheap deaths and aggravation. I almost broke my controller in-half more than once. Because Dice thinks good lighting means glares and lens dust don't expect to have the easiest time spotting black-clothed enemies from black backgrounds. My tactic was to stand in the open waiting to be shot so I could trace muzzle flashes to enemy locations. Your AI buddies will take the best shooting locations and then fail to do much damage. And if you take the cover assigned to them, they'll push you out of the way. Now, sharp shooting enemies that don't need to raise their guns to get head shots is one thing--but the fact that you can't trust the game to direct you to your next goal safely is unacceptable. Most the game is spent following a specific soldier. An Icon will appear over their head and you must walk within a few feet in order for the game to progress. This is quite annoying when the soldier is standing in an open field behind no cover and every attempt to reach him leads to another death. Sometimes they're on the other side of a battlefield and every enemy you kill is immediately replaced, making it near impossible to get across without dying. What's worse--the game will ask you to do illogical tasks. In the first full level, you're asked to go up on a bridge that provides no cover and man a light machine gun while all 20 bad guys shoot at you. I died 10 times in a row without even reaching the gun. Finally, I crawled to the gun but accidentally hit reload. By the time I had finished reloading, the commander was already sounding retreat... One mission has you escaping to a plane...but the game won't allow you on until your teammates have boarded first. I didn't realize this till I was blocked from boarding by an invisible wall and shot to death. On my next try--I simply laid down behind some bushes until they called for me to board. It was an absolute miserable experience.

Yet with all these miserable attempts to make exciting scenarios no moment in the single player campaign, was any where as exciting as the many memorable events of online play. I was once involved in a five minute firefight in an alleyway. Our team needed to capture the alley to allow for flanking positions on an MCOM station and the other team obviously needed that not to happen. Rockets flew over head, grenades were thrown back and forth, soldiers were dying and being revived left and right--it was amazingly intense and despite coming out on the losing end, I had more fun in those five minutes than in the entire single player campaign. Makes me wonder why they even bothered. Battlefield 3's online experience is awesome and a great update from Bad Company 2. The graphics are neater (even with PS3 doesn't get the full glory of the PC version) and the gameplay is smoother. The levels are great and allow for a wide variety of strategy and challenge. There's no room for heroes or loners--you need to work together to succeed; communication is key. This is a game for those looking to use tactic and cooperation to win. There's plenty of points to be earned without killing a single enemy (mine mostly come from heals, revives, and base captures.) Of course, that doesn't mean you won't find yourself kicking a little extra ass from one game to the next. If you're looking for a chance to just kill-kill-kill--you may want to look elsewhere. But if you're looking for an in-depth battlefield experience--here it is as the name implies--and it does not disappoint.

I'm also not at all impressed with the menu system. For example, you can't quit a server between battles, which means you actually have to start a match in order to leave. This means that sometimes entire teams leave right as a battle starts, leaving you alone to defend until new people join. Also the leveling system is weird, and only allows one pre-set per class, so there is no way to build different presets for different situations.

Well let me start with multi-player (where Battlefield 3 shines): The maps are huge and varied with decent graphics and frame-rate. Unlike COD you can play with little experience of on-line play. Granted you will die numerous times and not kill too many yourself BUT with COD you do get 'owned'. The points system and levelling and numerous types of multiplayer is great, along with vehicles. I generally don't enjoy multiplayer FPS but this I love.

Single player however overall is terrible in my opinion. This is not related to story, that is pretty decent, or graphics, they are cool. It is due to general playability. Firstly I have the enemy within my guns sights (very clearly too I may add) and I shoot but nothing!!! This has happened numerous times. Secondly the enemy can be so far away and dead accurate that you can barely see them and they kill you in no time. This is fine occasionally but it has been this way through most of the campaign. I am sorry but these issues especially, the aiming one, ruined these game for me. BF:BC2 single player was better along with COD MW1 & 2.

Overall it is a bit Jekyll and Hyde but due to being a (mainly) single player gamer I will have to give this a 6.

Sound: 8 - Sounds fantastic with the sounds of buildings crumbling around you truly feeling immersive and the sounds of the guns at a high quality.
Gameplay: 7 - Hugely let down by its single player attempt it feels like a high production film with a low production writer. In other words the single player to be blunt feels confused among the gameplay values and in a single player experience which should be sensational its a little disappointing the features of the multiplayer weren't implemented enough into the single player because the multi-player is great.
Lasting appeal: 7 - In the densely populated market of first person shooters and the single player not being one with huge replay value it really depends on how dedicated the player is to the multiplayer.
    Overall - 7.5/8 possibly.

ONLINE ONLY: The game is what it wants to be, a realistic shooter with grit that offers something different for shooter fans sick of the Call of Duty series......Where it falls down is the fact that I was never able to finish a game of Rush before the game crashed and kicked me. It was so bad I traded it in for MW3, that's saying something......Such a shame

Saying that though thats not enough to save this game for me. Dice should have focused on making an engine that looks great all across the board. I mean it looks like utter S***. Second the interface is terrible..terrible.. bad company 2's was much more classier. Finally the balance is so outta whack..one shot and your dead unlike 1943 which lets you use skill to land a number of hits to kill and enemy (unless a head shot). Only saving grace is the layout of the maps, the sound design is once again incredible, and of course the weapons, vehicles, etc are great. Servers are stable. As for single-player why bother with that (resources should have went straight into multiplayer) Overall I expected a more polished engine (graphics in bad company and even 1943 are WAY better) and better balance. I would recommend not buying this and saving the money. Buy if you must when it drops in price. Otherwise hold out till Dice gets their act together and delivers a better game graphically and gameplay wise. Expand

Battlefield 3's multiplayer has got to be one of the most immersive multiplayers yet, and still retains to be noob-friendly while still rewarding the dominant of players.

On a side-note, the single player is completely trash and feels heavily scripted, but on the other hand, the multiplayer makes up for this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Battlefield 3, while it may look nice on a PC and be groundbreaking graphically on a PC, lacks, incredibly on both the PS3 and 360. The entire game, is lacking.

Battlefield 3 is supposed to support the most realistic graphics of any game out there, bringing a large amount of reality, with the simple physics the game has, to the FPS genre. Well, it doesn't. The game looks no where near as well as it was advertised too. While they may have been showing the PC graphics, no mentions nor footage was made available in any advertising of the let down the consoles had to offer. For being such a hyped part of the games advertisement campaign, I am very upset with both DICE and EA on this one. And this is only the graphical fidelity, I haven't even touched on the many, many in game graphical bugs that are absolutely game breaking. Part of the "realism" is the lighting. Honestly, it is some of the worst lighting I have ever seen in any game. Rather than the enviroment looking as though you are a person seeing everything, it appears that you are in fact just a wet camera lens. Every light in the game gives off a blinding glare. Even flashlights from 600 yards away, in the middle of broad daylight, will blind you as if you are starring into a 5 million candle powered mag light. I won't even go any further with these horrendous problems. For what the game was hyped to be, graphically, it is a gigantic let down filled with a multitude of bugs, at least 10 of which I haven't even spoken of.

Now gameplay for BF3 is split into two areas, a Single player campaign and the online multiplayer. I've played both, and both are terrible. Every single scene from the single player campaign, has been ripped from a call of duty dating back to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. From a terrorist setting of a nuclear weapon, a top down mission from a jet fighter reminiscent of the AC-130 level in CoD-4, ride a lont rail shooting levels like that in World at War, shooting innocent police officers because they get in your way in a crowded public area, Modern Warfare 2, to the entire back drop of the single player campaign where you are being interrogated and are playing through flashbacks, Black Ops, to a destroyed Paris overflowing with nerve gas, Modern Warfare 3. There isn't a Call of Duty, that the single player campaign hasn't stolen from. It really is, pathetic. Just more proof, that BF3 really isn't "above and beyond the call."

Now, multiplayer. Where do we begin? Should I start with tactical flashlights that when mounted on a pistol can blind in broad daylight from 500 yards away or should I start with how if someone is aiming a weapon with a laser sight on it at your feet you are for some reason blinded? Not only are there some terrible implementations like these weapon attachments, but some previous mechanics such as destroying a tank, has been made near impossible without an entire platoon working on it at once. It takes 7 rockets to completely destroy a tank in the multiplayer. Yet only maybe 5 seconds to fully repair a tank to full armor. Some terrible items have been added, such as the Recon classes Recon Drone, which for some reason, you can run over and kill someone with a flying object the size of a basketball. The weapons are completely inbalanced, the bullet drop system only works half the time, the suppression system is just havoc, and once again the EA provided servers are absolutely terrible beyond usage nearly.

Honestly, this game would not even be worth a rent. I feel bad for the person who buys my used copy from the game store after I return this, only to have to purchase an online pass to play this lackluster title and just become frustrated with it.

The campaign is terribly boring. They say the whole scenery is destructible, but you can not break a single light car, and cars take ages to explode. There's only two things good in this game: The graphics and the multiplayer. As good graphics do not mean fun, I will not give points for the game only for beauty. But you can waste some days on the online multiplayer

For a game asking you to go "beyond the call" this game sure does borrow a few notes from Black Ops. The single player story starts slow but eventually gets pretty good towards the end. Oh man...modern warfare 2 does not offer this. It only gives you kill rushes. Thats it. And im sure mw3 does the same. I...cannot accept this over the massive stimulation I get from battlefield 3. I get less kills, but The overall experience is better.

Second, is the issues on multiplayer like, unbalanced weapons, low weapon damage, game latency and last but not forgotten is the horrible respawning problem. "Unbalanced weapons" An example of this is the PP-2000 out gunning a Shotgun at close range enough said! "Low weapon damage" Nothing drives me more crazy than wasting an entire Mag on someone to kill them, I mean come on 15-31 rounds into someone standing still before they die is just stupid! "Game latency" proof of this as most people knows who have played the game is while taking fire you run for cover only to be killed once you've made it around a corner or behind an object by the same player who was shooting you to begin with. And now to the worst of them all is the awful "Respawning" for TDM. I can not count the amount of times I have been killed because I have been spawned right into the sights of an enemy and shot dead before i could even hit the run or shot button. I am giving this game a 7 because of these issues and a few others. I ama little disappointed in this game but it is better the most of its competitors and its good to see that DICE is taking the proper steps to correct these problem. I was planning to buy CoD MW3 but it sounds like the staleness continues and I'm happy with Battlefield 3 so will probably pass. I really enjoy the class system used online and the gameplay overall. The maps are far more interesting than CoD maps have been. The perks for each class are divided up wisely and gives you the option to play strategically with your teammates if you want, but you can still go all Leroy Jenkins if the mood strikes and still have a lot of fun.

There are some bugs for sure, but nothing that ruins the game. I have yet to see a guy shooting me from underneath the map or inside a boulder like what always happens with CoD. I will be looking forward to patch updates to correct some things, especially Team Deathmatch spawn points. There is one particular map in Deathmatch where you can't spawn without being shot in the back 5 seconds later, but most of the other maps don't have as much of an issue because they're pretty large. The Battlelog web site is useful for keeping track of leveling/unlocks/stats and adds to the experience quite nicely. Overall I really enjoy the game and glad I made the switch.

The graphics are a mixture of awesomeness and disappointment. The lighting system is really impressive, however I hate fighting when it's dark as everything blends together. Moreover many elements seem fuzzy and pixelated. Character animation is very good.

Multiplayer is great - addictive and focuses on team play. If you have played a lot of CoD before, you need some time to get use to the new way of playing. You actually kill less frequently and have to think more about your strategy, however this in return gives you more satisfaction. For example, team deathmatch is actually TEAM deathmatch, as opposed to CoD, where it's usually "every man for himself".

Vehicles add a lot to the gameplay. Classes are balanced nicely and actually force some players to think tactically.

Overall, the game is pretty good, it's just a shame that the campaign is a disappointment.

It was a scripted linear shooting gallery on 'easy mode' and I only got gameover because of sudden unfair damage. Suddden unfair damage was the rule on 'hard' where I had to cancel progress, two chapters in.

It was a scripted linear shooting gallery on 'easy mode' and I only got gameover because of sudden unfair damage. Suddden unfair damage was the rule on 'hard' where I had to cancel progress, two chapters in.

Multiplayer was still fairly active in december 2015, possibly due to winter retreat/holidays. Still, only half of the game modes were consistent, and a few of the trophy-requiring modes were completely abandoned.

Compared with Battlefield 4: Not as much graphical variation in BF3 but fully functional, BF3 maps feel more oldschool gameplay-focused, BF3 has smaller community and fewer active maps (I feel like I played 10 even with Premium), gameplay almost identical, BF3 has online coop which is abandoned, it's frustrating to load a gamemode and find it is empty so BF3 is mostly variations on deathmatch and rush and capture the flag and conquest and the same few maps.

I want to say this game was overrated, but bottomline was the learning curve was just too darn steep for me. Graphics were good and so was the realistic gunplay, but there are so many fps multiplayer, why should I spend hours just to get the fundamental of the game down..and that doesn't even mean being good at the game.. i personaly do not like the game but battlefield 3 is definetly a game for people wanting to play some realistic games.
First off the campain is super boring but does bring a lot of action just no real storyline,
Multiplayer is ok but lacks good action.
finaly whoever thought it was a good idea to put a coop should be fired because its boring and takes time out of the real focus, mutiplayer

Battlefield 3 is worse than Bad Company 2. Yes the graphics are better and the campaign although shallow is his storyline is good but what makes it worse is the multiplayer. It's that it's bad but it's just not good enough. The loadout menus are confusing and completely unintuitive and the maps are just not better than Bad Company 2.

While Iv'e never been a fan of EA's games, besides Dead Space, I think I might reconsider that thought. Battlefield 3 has the best graphics Iv'e seen in any game. Downside, the campaign is just a "meh", the story is crap, ally A.I. get in the way a lot, and the jet mission couldv'e been fun if you could FLY the jet! The MP, however, is the games saving grace. This is my first Battlefield, and I'm quite impressed with the multiplayer. I love levelling up, love the graphics. I stay alive a lot longer than in Reach... Very addicting and fun.

The single player campaign is too much in rails for my likes.

Their are many amazing first person shooters but unfortunately this is not one of them. Dont get me wrong this is not a bad game by any means. The campaign is okay and has some really interesting plot points. The gameplay is amazing and very realistic. The multiplayer is solid but not for me. To tell you the truth i would rather have a Bad Company 3 than a Battlefield 3. HopefullyTheir are many amazing first person shooters but unfortunately this is not one of them. This is a good game in 2017... never played a battlefield game before only killzone2, rage and cod mw3. I have to say the single player experience is acceptable, the story and cutscenes are lame but the gameplay is fun and with enough variety. In the multiplayer experience it gives it's best and becomes fairly hard for me. I still remember the first far cry multiplayer as more fun. But this game makes things work for a more updated gameplay. It's mostly cahotic and fast paced, and I think that's good for this kind of game. Expand

Hopefully EA reconsiders its approach to toppling Call Of Duty in the future, and allows its games to develop their own personality, rather than imitate something else.

The nine multiplayer maps seem to be designed specifically to let players come up with their own creative strategies. Compared to COD, this gives the player a real sense of freedom. There is no such thing as a perfect strategy or a trotten path. [December 2011, p.74]
