The final Assassin's Creed game, which didn't rely on arbitrary leveling requirements and gear levels. All that affected gameplay was genuine, unadulterated skill and the tools at your disposal. You were the final game, which stood against what mars and besmirches the Assassin's Creed franchise today, Godspeed.

Why do I keep playing these games? The Assassin's Creed franchise is garbage and Ubisoft is the garbage dump. I decree that I will never play another Assassin's Creed, or Ubisoft, game again. Die Ubisoft, die Assassin's Creed... please!

Not the best AC game, but still solid. If you liked AC III and Black Flag, you will love Rogue, because it's a mix between those two. Overall rating: 8.2.

Though this is straight up just AC 4 with ice, it's still its own game. Shay is an interesting character to learn about and I got invested in his story. The combat/gameplay is the exact same as 4 (from what I remember), but the characters are new and the areas are new (and cold).

Best AC game for me. Yes, it looks a lot like AC4. But he's a great character like Shay Cormac. It's a beautiful story written contrary to the usual. Epic scenes. Great character development. In AC4, he removed everything that was bad and added good features. Of course AC4 is an excellent game but I prefer Rogue.

AC:Rogue took everything what was good in Black Flag and transformed it into pure perfection.
Main protagonist´s story is just breathtaking. This game learned me that sometimes is good to doubt what you believe in. Almost all missions are extremely interesting and filled with fighting or stealth action.
Combat system is good old hit system, not some "damage numbers" and etc. However

Combat system is good old hit system, not some "damage numbers" and etc. However there is not much guns and swords to buy in shop. I was in gun shop in second hour of my walktrough and i finished game with gear i had since this. Ship upgrades force you to raid French ships and loot camps which is fine.
After long time this was first game, where i tried to do 100% completion. I´ve collected almost everything what was possible in this game.

Another fantastic thing in this game is soundtrack... themes and shanties... ever sound was please for my ears.

I was kinda dissapointed with Assassin assaults. They are just waiting in the bush everytime or haystack. Its too simple. They could at least do some coordinate attacks or something. It wasnt challenging to beat them.
When i finished game, i completed only 17 missions in naval campaign. Its shame that it took so long, but i want to move to another game so im not going to wait there only to complete it.

So in the end. Its a best AC game i have played by far (only gameplay, not story - it cant compete with Ezio trilogy) and it was refreshing to play for the opposite side.
    Well deserved 10/10

But main missions are great. We are going to Lisbon, Paris, New York, North Atlantic. And they are not copy of other ones. Scenario is great, after Haytham Kenway, Ubisoft successfully drew a thin line between Assassins and Templars with Shay Patrick Cormac. Edward is an unsuccessful character, but Shay is great.

Also this game connecting III, IV:BF and Unity each other.

If Ubisoft change some more things from ACIV:BF for Rogue, my point will be 9/10 just like my point of ACII.

I'm not a fan of the clunky climbing in these older games. I think the change in climbing in Odyssey makes a huge difference in the gameplay. I think these older games would be far better off if the climbing was like it is in Odyssey. The last naval mission called "Cold Fire" is hard to beat if your ship isn't upgraded enough. I was out of mortar shots in this mission. I rage quit a couple times but beat it after 8 or so hours... You should be able to reload easier. Its' a pain in this game. And you get out numbered.. I shouldn't have to go to the one guy to get more ammo. Sure I can get some from a enemy ship but its just a pain. This last mission is also difficult because of icebergs.. It brings my rating of this game down a lot. Also the hunting isn't good. No point in really having it here. This game should get a true remastered version with better climbing, hunting and better naval missions. I think having a option for unlimited ammo would be a good thing too. It would make the game much easier and a more enjoyable experience. I also found maneuvering my ship to be a huge pain. It felt stiff to me. I think it needs to be fixed in a remastered version as well. In Odyssey it felt smooth and the camera was better. I know Rogue is a older game and I'm comparing it too a much newer one. But if they made these changes I think this game could be incredible. Honestly I want a true remastered version or give me a sequel to it on the PS4/PS5. Expand

It's amazing that all these years I was under the impression that this game was just a Ubisoft 'money-grab' made to get some money from last-gen console owners while working on their 'big-time' next-gen game that became Unity. I picked this game up for $5, wanting to check out the game that said you could finally play as a Templar. Boy am I ever glad I did. This game is brilliant. AsIt's amazing that all these years I was under the impression that this game was just a Ubisoft 'money-grab' made to get some money from last-gen console owners while working on their 'big-time' next-gen game that became Unity. I picked this game up for $5, wanting to check out the game that said you could finally play as a Templar. Boy am I ever glad I did. This game is brilliant. As another review said, without the huge pressures of having to be Ubisoft's money ticket for the year, this game was allowed to flourish all around, from a brilliantly crafted story to improving some game features to picking out the past features from all the previous AC games that came before.

The main character, Shay, is a well-rounded character that I could not get enough of. He was conflicted and had character flaws that allowed him to grow into the man he becomes that can be depended upon by Grand Master Kenway. I had read in some other review before picking this game up that Shay's motivations for changing sides were shallow or didn't make too much sense but I disagree, we started as an assassin getting to know some of Shay's allies and how they treated him, and were sent on missions that made him start to question his allegiance and what the assassins were really working at, into the mission that pushed him past the breaking point and pushed him right into templar arms that weren't as evil as the assassins always led us to believe. In fact, we finally got to see the other side as people too, people who were also trying to make the world a better place. It was so refreshing. I only wish the story could have been longer, there were only six memory sequences but what we did get was very compelling and fulfilling and the ending was brilliantly satisfying.

Rogue picked the best stuff from each game and improved upon it. The ship combat from Black Flag, the item collecting (Rogue's war letters, cave paintings, templar maps, etc) from Black Flag and III, open combat from Black Flag and sneaking combat from III, and the rooftop usage from the Ezio trilogy. The Assassin interceptions were my favorite side mission, instead of getting letters from pigeons that tell you targets that you need to assassinate; templars or their allies, instead you're reading said letter but trying to protect the target and having to assassinate the assassins before they can kill their target. I shot a man out of mid-air, poised to assassinate the target! It's brilliantly done and I wish there had been more than 12!

I played Unity after this and whoa you could tell the difference. Rogue far surpassed Unity in just about every way. Rogue's Versailles mission looked so much better and was better crafted than it was in Unity. Charles Dorian and Ben Franklin (honestly couldn't even tell Ben was Ben rather than some random NPC thrown into the scene) both looked a thousand times better animated in Rogue than Unity.

Play Assassin's Creed Rogue. You won't regret it.

The story, meant to explain the downfall of the Colonial Assassins, feels perfunctory and hastily thrown together. It is short, too. The shortest of all the main storylines in the Assassin's Creed cannon. The main character, Shay Cormac, is a whiny twerp who is constantly saying crap like "I make my own luck", which has to be the single douchiest phrase in the English language. His conversin to the Templars and emotional struggle as he hunts his former friends never feels real.

The repetitive nature of the Assassin's Creed games has always been mitigated by interesting settings and characters. "Assassin's Creed; Rogue" suffers from an empty world and an even emptier protagonist, which cripples the game.

The biggest disappointment for me was that although you play as a Templar, it has almost no influence on gameplay. The historical backdrop is not exciting at all and it’s pretty obvious that the whole game was designed so that the assets from Assassin’s Creed III and IV could be reused. The whole naval module borrowed from Black Flag is still fantastic, but after having played 7 games of the series I need something better than just more of the same. [01/2015, p.46]
