    Game play-
The naval combat is back and improved, it is the most fun thing to do in the game destroying and boarding ships or forts is thematic, enjoying and it actually gets better the more you do it as it is so varied. The combat and parkhour is exactly the same as the last game. Most of the combat is decent however learning how to kill different enemies is hard to get use to some enemies require you to break their defense first, while others require you to counter with a gun or sometimes to stun them; this has the potential to send controllers flying across the room especially when you are outnumbered. The only new weapon is the air rifle which is basically the same as the blowpipe from AC4 BF but it allows you to shoot explosives which are very fun. Freedom of movement is still there but honestly the only new game play mechanic is fighting assassins; they sneak around, hide and you must stay alert to counter them because they can jump out from anywhere to kill you sometimes from above exactly like we can do, it’s a great change to finally verse an assassin and to see what the Templar must deal with.
The missions have you doing a variety of combat, chasing, eavesdropping, sabotage, naval combat and sneaking, allot of it is enjoying as it ties in with the story but is at times frustrating repetitive and bland, especially when you are trying to be sneaky and make a wrong turn and are spotted then you have 6 different guards attacking you which basically destroys the immersion. They have fixed the repetitive missions from the last AC game but the game plays too similarly too Black Flag as a whole. Some side activities are great like saving citizens, harpooning sea animals, and hunting (for crafting) or of course the naval fort activities, fort and liberation activities are the best, you have to liberate assassin hideouts to use shops and access more land. There is little to no hand holding you can choose however you want to do things sneaking through or Rambo style. Allot of the game play mechanics are copied from AC4 Black Flag there is a disappointing feeling of déjà vu, it was fresh and new in the last game not here.

    Story and Characters-
The campaign is very interesting and one of the best in all the series, you start the game and are immediately into the story and action no time is wasted, you play as an assassin for the first 20% of the game. The main difference and one shining point with this AC game is that you change to a Templar due to a horrific event, hunting your former assassin friends. This story grabs your attention really quickly and keeps you wanting more through the events and the fact you get to understand these characters and then knowing you have to hunt them down and kill them. Some plot lines of the story can be a bit cliché and over obvious and in the middle of the game you feel like an errand boy rather than a templar. The characters are done well, though the voice acting and dialogue could be better, the main character is a badass both dark and likeable, maybe the most interesting AC character yet. Only good fans of the series will really care about the modern day element if you are not a fan you could even consider them throw away.

    Presentation-
Everything looks stunning from the icy glaciers to the green forests, graphics are good for old gen and the music is very good. The New York city looks very different from that in AC3 which is great but is still rather familiar. 18th century North America is depicted accurately, it is a joy to see historical people from that time like James Cook and Benjamin Franklin who look and act incredibly accurate.

    Pros-
Amazing story, very likeable character, cool side quests, awesome naval combat, accurate portrayal of the times, great music, beautiful scenery and freedom to explore and move.

    Cons-
Some missions can get stale and unnecessary, feels too similar to AC4 Black Flag, no changes to combat or free running, brings almost nothing new to the franchise and the game is too short.

You don't have to be an AC fan to like this game, good buy 7/10

I am a big fan when it comes to open world adventure games like the Assassins Creed Series, but this one was okay. The setting of the game is very interesting starting off in Newfoundland Canada, and was in general really interesting seeing the Brotherhood of America during its "hay day" and just look around saying, "Wow, I can see why this was talked about as a big deal now." Despite it all it begins to feel more as a DLC for Black Flag instead of a sequel to it. The games story in the beginning seems very weird to me because it begins to fluctuate from really great missions to being very boring in others. It was a nice change though in the story instead of just pushing you out there to become an assassin and go through the strenuous journey of how you became one (which seemed to be a huge thing after Ezio's story in 2, brotherhood, and revelations) you start off as one and give you a very brief exposition to why overtime without it feeling forced. This game seems to really pick up in the middle once you become a Templar opening up the world to new and exciting things which wasn't in any of the previous games (except for Unity unless they came out on the same day). Anyways there was a lack of multiplayer in this game, but I'm not a huge Assassins Creed multiplayer fan because I buy the game more for its story rather than its multiplayer accessibility but I still like to play it just to change things up that's all. In the end Shay was alright he just seemed whiny or angry most of the time in the beginning and then just overly brooding through out the rest of it. This isn't a bad thing just made me feel just a less in touch with the character as a person that's all. In this I had fun and I would play some of it again, but the map seemed overly complex and a challenge sometimes when I was sailing in the ocean (in the game) and I liked it challenges are good to me because it makes me want to customize my boat and add things to it with more missions and looting like in Black Flag. If I could I would give it a 7.4 to a 7.9 out of 10 if they made the map seem more accessible I believe that it would be a 7.7 to a solid 8 or possibly with some other work done maybe a 8.5. I get it though this wasn't supposed to be the main dish this year and I get it since it feel more so of an appetizer to Unity during the Thanksgiving, or winter holidays. Expand

A disgrace that cost 1 point on my final mark.

Because beside that and even if there is not a lot of innovations in gameplay, the few there are are great and the foundations of the game found in Black Flag were very good which makes Rogue a very fun game to play.

But where Rogue really stands above Black Flag is its story, right between Black Flag and 3 (and Liberation) and from the point of view of the templars, which make the all franchise way more interesting the conflict turning "grey" instead of "Black and white". Unfortunately the "present" story is still pretty useless, maybe it'll all make sense in the future, but right now I feel the only reason of its existence is because they have to make it to respect the origins of Assassin's Creed ( and one of the actress in the present is awful and annoying, I even think Ubisoft Sofia knew it, given she wore an Avelina badge).

Rogue is certainly not a bad game, it will last about 30 hours and entertain you, with an engaging story, but the lack of innovation and the technical issues leave me quite a mix feeling.

This game was a lot of fun to play just as Black Flag was but that comes down to the great game play and running about the area's. It seems to me like just another of the recent AC games less focus on story and characters and more collectables which is a real shame given the opportunity they had to tell a great story from the Templar perspective.

Overall it is a fun game if you liked Black Flag but the story was a let down for me as someone who had wanted a Templar AC game for a while like quite a few others fans had.

I won't lie and tell you I've already completed this game like a lot of users have, because it is massive and would take far longer than 3 days for any normal human being to do so. I'm about 8 hours into it, and will provide my thoughts on the experience thus far (and adjust my score once completed).

People have called it Black Flag 1.5, but Assassin's Creed III: Black Flag would be more appropriate, as Rogue consists of Black Flag gameplay mixed with cities and characters you know from AC3. It is set in the time period of AC3 during Haytham Kenway's playable section, before Connor made an appearance, so you'll see Achilles when he was young, Adewale when he's old, etc.

The gameplay is near identical to Black Flag with some new elements thrown in here and there to make things interesting, like firecrackers which allow you to lure out the game's new "stalkers" who are hiding in spots you would normally hide in and function similarly to how players stalk in AC multiplayer. Also new is the ability to be boarded by other ships on the ocean, and there are some new collectables and vertical platforms you can climb up really fast. You also take damage in a lot of areas now when you swim, because it's freezing. Thankfully, there are still locations where you can swim when you're not in a frozen climate.

Graphically, the game is more beautiful than Black Flag artistically, but whether or not it looks better on a technical level depends on which platform you played Black Flag on. Having played AC4 on PC, for instance, I found the shadows on characters close-up to be awful, but I'm not sure if that also occurred on the PS3 version of AC4. Regardless, the colors, the environments, and nearly everything artistically has been improved over Black Flag. Cities don't all look the same anymore, and I love the frozen mountains in the distance, the colorful skies and lighting, and even Shay looks way more awesome in his templar outfit than Edward Kenway ever did. Overall, a much more atmospheric game. And it runs great, too.

Speaking of Shay, at first his voice acting put me off and sounded like a fake Irish accent (which it very well could be), but it's growing on me now. I like the character; he's not evil like all the trailers made him out to be. He's absolutely a better character than Edward Kenway, and the story in general is likely the most interesting one since AC2. I'm interested in seeing how it all unfolds. I'm also happy to report that there has only been ONE tailing mission the whole time during my 8 hours, and it was a short one. Thank goodness!

The game is still very much a collect-a-thon, however. Much like Black Flag, the map is absolutely loaded with items to collect, which of course involves setting your GPS to that icon and running to it brainlessly. Nothing new here. However, it appears the collectables have more purpose this time around, which is nice.

I'll be updating this review as I continue playing the game, but for now it feels like all the best elements of AC3 and 4 thrown together with a more intriguing story. That being said, it's HIGHLY familiar, and I've yet to be surprised by any elements of it. It just feels too much like Black Flag, and I wasn't a huge fan of that game to begin with, so I'm not yet very impressed considering this is a 60 dollar game. We'll see how it turns out in the end, but for now, I recommend renting it first.

In the single player story you are Shay Patrick Cormac, an Assassin gone Templar who has had second thoughts about the Assassin's and then joins the Templars. This sounds really interesting but the story is weak, you don't care about the characters, bad voice acting and awkward dialogue. The only interesting bits about the campaign is that it features refrences and Easter eggs from other Ubisoft games and past assassins creed characters for example Adrian Hough return to play his role of Haytham Kenway (The grandmaster of the Templars) and who was also featured in Assassin's Creed 3.

Now to the non-story part of the game the game, all I have to say is its awesome, the game has a HUGE open world, I mean seriously its so big I still haven't seen all of it and it would put Black Flag's world to shame, One part of the world in particular is the North Atlantic which is probably the most impressive part of the map, I say this because its the coldest part of the world, and you can tell because it has ice burgs around the map, your ship gets covered in snow and when your in the water you lose health because your freezing.

In actual gameplay the ship combat has hugely improved because you can use those ice burgs to damage other small ships by attacking them and you can use burning oil to slow down and damage ships. The human combat didn't change much but I don't mind that because I love feeling like a badass killing 10 or 12 enemies at once. One major think I don't like is that there's no multiplayer, I mean I didn't think multiplayer was that great in the past but it was still better than nothing. The game also suffers with occasional frame rate and texture popins.

So is the game worth buying full price. If your only interested in single player alone then yes its worth full price. But if you really like single player and multiplayer than I would wait for a sale or price drop, and despite its technical issues and weak story you would still have fun.

I already bought Black Flag and Freedom Cry. Rogue should've been a $25 expansion/DLC, not a $60 "fresh" game.

If you enjoyed Black Flag, go ahead and get this. It's essentially the same, but you can play as the bad guys (Templars). Eat up the gimmick.

The story of this game has so much more potential than that of Assassin's Creed: Unity. Shay is a very interesting character with some amazing character development. But the game's short campaign and uninteresting side-quests (Pretty much everything you already experienced in Black Flag) don't make this game worth $60 in my opinion. Wait until the price goes down first.

There's nothing worthwhile in this game at all. It has very little to do with the First Civilization plot, very little development in present day way between the assassin's and templars, and pretty much runs like standalone games Freedom Cry and Liberation. It's it's own little story that doesn't really mean much. The Gameplay is just Black Flag. You still need to sail around

It's it's own little story that doesn't really mean much. The Gameplay is just Black Flag. You still need to sail around and recruit crew. Luckily it's far more optional than Freedom Cry and Black Flag. But there are stil la few missions you must do from the ship.

The game has introduced snow, and blizzards which are pretty refreshing, but you barely experience any of it in the story, you don;t go to the North Atlantic much, and when you do, blizzards and snow are so rare that I only experienced it about twice.
Also thankfully, the game has massively reduced the occurrence of rain and storms. In Black Flag and Freedom Cry it rained more than it was sunny, just because they wanted to show off the rain effects any chance they got. It got boring fast, luckily here it rains very infrequently, and the only storm I experienced had no hurricanes or tidal waves, which seemed to be a daily occurrence in Black Flag's world.

The plot is thin, thin as ice in fact. You don't really learn anything new about the overall plot in the slightest. There's a couple of cameo's from characters in other games, but they're fairly shallow.
Honestly this game can easily be skipped, and I have a feeling that was done entirely intentionally, as it was a ps3/360 exclusive release at the same time of Unity being released on PS4/xbone.

As far as unlockables and extras goes - there's nothing remarkable here. If you want to sink hours and hours into collecting every crate or animus fragment, then you'll get a few pieces of clothing and equipment, but nothing worthwhile. Juno and her ilk are only barely mentioned out of the animus and when they are, it's just for the sake of it with no new information.

As far as story gameplay goes, it's pretty uninspired. Lots of run-away-from-events, straight-forward assassinations, some sailing. There's little variety here, no picking-pocketing, not much stalking, not any infiltration missions, honestly it's just such a shallow and dull game I really struggled to finish it.

The story, meant to explain the downfall of the Colonial Assassins, feels perfunctory and hastily thrown together. It is short, too. The shortest of all the main storylines in the Assassin's Creed cannon. The main character, Shay Cormac, is a whiny twerp who is constantly saying crap like "I make my own luck", which has to be the single douchiest phrase in the English language. His conversin to the Templars and emotional struggle as he hunts his former friends never feels real.

The repetitive nature of the Assassin's Creed games has always been mitigated by interesting settings and characters. "Assassin's Creed; Rogue" suffers from an empty world and an even emptier protagonist, which cripples the game.

It has the feel of being a DLC pack for Black flag but it's much bigger than Freedom Cry so I wouldn't make that statement. In fact I am reminded of AC Liberation HD which was also a standalone game but lacked the scale of previous AC games. The graphics aren't as good as BF, they're more on par with AC3, and the AI of NPCs is poor. I can assassinate one soldier standing right in front of another and the second just stands there waiting to be assassinated himself; or I can be sighted by an enemy, duck into a bush and he'll stop pursuing me and after a few seconds walk away as if I was never there. To the people who say this game is without its bugs, you aren't getting the whole story. Ubisoft didn't introduce a new engine with a new set of bugs in this case, but there are plenty of places that due to poor map design choices I have fallen between rocks and gotten stuck or run up on an invisible wall where the playable map ends but there's no visible barrier like rocks or steep hills. After playing Unity t's refreshing to get an AC game with some story, some time spent outside the animus, and tie-ins to the other games. I feel like this one should have been released in between AC3 and Black Flag due to the outdated graphics, the hooks into AC3, and the lack of PS4 support. In all it's a good game but I still don't understand why is's PS3/XB360 only and I don't think it's a $60 game given how much it borrows from black flag. The biggest disappointment for me was that although you play as a Templar, it has almost no influence on gameplay. The historical backdrop is not exciting at all and it’s pretty obvious that the whole game was designed so that the assets from Assassin’s Creed III and IV could be reused. The whole naval module borrowed from Black Flag is still fantastic, but after having played 7 games of the series I need something better than just more of the same. [01/2015, p.46]
