The two-player mode isn’t all bad, but for such a solid game, it’s a flaw that’s keeping this otherwise plenary racing game below the ranks of "Mario Kart" and "Diddy Kong Racing."
  2. While Freaky Flyers is not going to compete with Mario Kart by any means, it is a fun title with a dash of innuendo, a drop of multiplayer, and about 2 sprinkles too little of speed. All in all, a fun adult title in the land of 'serious sims' and 'shell tossing plumber-racer' games.
  3. While vibrant with colors and sounds, at times plays out in a tired and repetitive fashion, often leaving you with the feeling that you are playing in slow motion.

Together with a narrator that truly enhances the experience (making this the polar opposite of 90 percent of games with narrators), Freaky Fliers is like a comedy album, cartoon and racing-shooter, all wrapped into one tasty toon tortilla. [Aug 2003, p.70]
  5. Graphics are beautiful; however, playing a game solely for its graphics is unheard of in my book. The concept is original, but is really not that intriguing.

The racing is slow as molasses, the weapon selection is pathetic, and it only supports two-player split-screen. [Aug 2003, p.91]

Compounding the problem is the game's low framerate. Freaky Flyers will often drop below 30 frames per second, resulting in a chop-tastic display. [Sept 2003, p.40]

There are nice extras, the flying race mechanics are not extraordinary but good, there are a lot of hidden specials, the track design might look a bit chaotic, but there are a lot of different paths and a variety of landscapes, that keep you exploring for hours. It is no Mario Kart, but much better that most of the PS2 kart games.
The story mode is okay, the characters are many and funny (if you like the style of humor) and there is nothing bad to say about this game.
The possibility to do ww1-style flight missions integrated in the kart career mode or dogfight against a friend on split screen is giving the game another interesting aspect: As snoopy vs red baron it now to expensive and hard to get, here you get at least a bit something similar. I don't know why it is that underrated. Especially as kart games, flight racing games and ww1-flight games are very few good ones made for the PS2, this one is a must have for fans of one of those genres.
