The battles are quite good and not monotonous and the difficulty level, while a bit low for my tastes, is tolerable. All around a solid RPG title and well worth playing. That said, it does have some flaws; the main characters, Yuna and Tidus, are very unlikable and not really all that interesting, and towards the end the game does begin to drag a little in places. All in all though, a good game. Expand

Great graphics but to much watching videos and not enough playing the game. In a way it is like watching a movie, which is ok I guess. I have not played X-2 yet but I hear that it is better. There are rumors that Square is making a X-3!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy X is a game I've picked up and put down many times before. Originally, I was looking for Sonic Unleashed for the PS2, as its daytime stages are looked fun, but the gamestop I was in didnt have it, so instead, I got this. I have played three Final Fantasy games (VII, XII, X), and out of them all, this is the one I like the least. And beleive me, I have my reasons. Let me start off with the positives: The story. The story in this game is really really good. You take control of Tidus, an annoying character whom youll end up hating, who is a Blitzball player who is teleported away from his city of Zanarkand after a creature known as sin walks into it. He soon finds out that he is in the future, 1000 years later, and eventually meets Wakka, a fellow Blitzball player who has never won a game and decides to go off on one more championship before becoming a guradian. I dont want to spoil anymore now. The plot does have some flaws though: Apparently, when you die in the world of spira, if you are not sent by a summoner, you will be reborn as a fiend. If you get killed as a fiend, you will become a fiend. If you get killed as a fiend, you will become a feind! Eh? This means that there is no downside to dying. So death is pointless since ten minutes later, youll get back up. Also, the battle system is really really good as well. Strategic thinking and using the right characters is key to winning a battle. And a convienient bar at the right tells you who will move next, and you can also strateigecly switch party members. This is the one part of Final Fantasy X that I really love. The only bad thing I can say about them is that theyre a bit too slow paced, but thats not really something fair to gripe over. Thats unfortunately where the positives end really. Now its time for the ranting. Where to start? How about the character design and models? Alright. The character design is really... um... unique? Its all really weird. I mean, who looked at Seymour all of a sudden and said YES! THAT HAIR STYLE IS PERFECT! MAKE IT HAPPEN! Youll really have to see the characters to know what I mean. The models, while some are great for the time, look flat out weird, especially Rikku and Issaru. Some people dont even move their mouth when talking, and simle when theyre not supposed to. Okay, moving on. The gameplay is linear. Youre always set on a straight forward path with little to no oppertunity to go back. A factor to this linearity is the amount of cutscenes that spend way too much time showing off graphics and are like "YEAH! LOOK AT THESE PS2 GRAPHICS. SCREW GC AND XBOX, GO OUT AND BUY A PS2!" My first 5-6 hours of gameplay was spent moving from place to place which will trigger a cutscene, a boss fight or both. I land on an island. Theres a red arrow to follow. I follow it and a cutscene appears. It ends, and another red arrow appears. I walk two steps and another cutscene. That cutscene ends, and I proceed to follow the arrow. Another cutscen. Another arrow. Cutscene, arrow, cutscene arrow, cutscene, arrow, CUTSCEN, ARROW, CUTSCENE, ARROW, CUTSCENE, ARROW! WHY?!!! There was barley anything interseting around me. None of the NPCs have anythign to say, there is a severe lack of shops. If Yuna runs out of MP, and I dont have any potions, Im screwed. If there was a shop, just-UGGHHH! Another aspect of tyhe game is that its soo annoying! Dont get me started on those wait for yuna sections. In certain sections, Yuna is praying at a temple, and all of the characters keep on telling you to sit down, shut up, and wait till Yuna is done. But you
re not supposed to wait. Youre not supposed to sit ther. Youre supposed to go a certain spot in the area, and then it will trigger a cutscene! HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT! Some places you're supposed to go to trigger the cutscene are the places that everyone is telling you not to go! Like the place where Yuna is praying why? I spend, I kid you not, 3 hours, sitting there waiting for Yuna, and she never came out. And besides; WAITING FOR SOMEONE? DOES THAT SOUND LIKE FUN TO YOU?! And last, Blitzball. Blitzball is so annoying. First off, the tutorial is painfully long, and it gives you som much wrong advice on what to do in the game. Second, Blitzball is slow, its boring, its quiet, and the first time you play it, you are the worst team by a lot, and youll loose. Luckily, by the end of your first Blitzball game, a majority of the problems you had are gone. No more Cutscene aroww following and Blitzball is completely optional. However, there are still some gripes. You can never really go a decent distance without a random battle, and, still, there are a lack of shops. Luckily, only my first 10 hours of the game were painfull, but ya know what? FFX wasnt that bad. Its the worst of the FF games Ive played, but thats not saying much, since the three I played were great. When its good, its great, and when its annoying...oh god........ill give it an 8.0/10

Also, I missed the freedom I had with the previous chapters while roaming on the world map. Here, the whole story goes on a linear path and you get some freedom with the airship only on the very last chapter. It was needed much earlier in the game.

Don't get me wrong, the environments are beautiful and the creature battles varied and engaging. The game does open up completely, but only right at the end and the freedom to explore feels more like a needless additional activity that doesn't really add much to the central plot. But, that aside, the additional stuff is vast and incredibly challenging. The monster farm has some hard as nails fights.

The story is can be really moving at times and you can not help but fall in love with Yuna. Tidus is a tool, but a lovable tool and it is great to see their relationship develop and grow.

Blitzball is a simple little side game. but damn is it fun. The better you get the more you want to play. I'm a bit surprised that Square never a spin-off title around this.

    Overall:
Final Fantasy X is a really good addition to the FF series and has done a good job bringing the FF franchise into the 21st century. While I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous titles, I still liked it none the less.

The story in FFX is quite what you'd expect from a Final Fantasy game: depressing, deep, and full of angst. For long-time fans of the franchise, it won't really amaze them much. But for first-timers, it'll blow you away. It is so amazing that you'll definitely shed a tear or two. I won't go into detail due to spoilers but I will say that it's one of the best stories I've seen for an RPG. The characters in FFX are very well-done and realistic. You might even see bits and pieces of yourself in some of them. Yes they're that deep.

The gameplay in this game is very linear which is one of the flaws I was referring to earlier. Linearity in an RPG tends to turn me off. There are very few side quests and mini-games in FFX which saddened me since the side quests are so easy that anyone can do them. There's only one mini-game in X and that's blitzball. It's really fun and quite addicting! There is also something that you have to do several times in the game and it never fails to give me a headache. The Cloister of Trials. Ugh. Just thinking about it makes my head hurt.

The fighting system in FFX is turn-based where up to three characters at a time can choose amongst their regular attacks, magic, items and specials to defeat the various enemies in the way. You unlock abilities to use as you level up by advancing characters through a special grid, differing from a standard level up system. However, I found that it's very easy to manipulate and quite predictable. For both you and the enemy. Some battles do have special controls which sorta makes up for it but only slightly. Another flaw is that X has the easiest final boss in gaming history. Are you kidding me? Seriously? But the ending to the game is so sad and tear-jerking that it makes it forgiveable.

As for music, X is as good as it gets. The tracks in the game are very somber and easily match the game perfectly. You might even shed a tear or two. After beating the game, there's virtually nothing to do afterwards. The least the developers could've done is offer a New Game Plus. So X might be one of those RPGs that you'll only play once then let it collect dust on your shelf. Which I find to be very sad since it's quite good.

So if you're looking for a one-time fling, Final Fantasy X is the RPG for you. If you're looking for a long-time relationship, you might want to look elsewhere.

Corridors, the game. Apparently, director Motomu Toriyama went several steps further in Final Fantasy 13 and made that game 1 long corridor (haven't played FFXIII). FFX is a pretty good game, albeit Auron is a better main character than Tidus, & the game is way too linear. Rated 8/10 because I love the Blitzball minigame, it alone is worth the price.

It does have its flaws though with Tidus being a mediocre protagonist despite his nice character design, the voice acting is a mixed bag with some characters sounding good and others sounding like they came from an abysmal anime dub, some of the decision making in the game is odd and some of the characters can be downrightfrustrating at times such as Wakka whose bible-thumping gets really annoying overtime. The difficulty in the game is also very bipolar and the sphere trials shouldn't be in the game period.

But as the history goes, the characters are developed and the history gets better and better, until it reaches it's climax on that final. It was one of the best endings ever made, and also, it builds a "bridge" between this and the next game. For those who prioritize histories in games, this game is for you!

The summons (aeons) being able to fight as a playable character was a really cool addition and for me it was the apex of importance of summons.
The game has a lot to explore, extra summons, celestial weapons and extremely difficult boss.
Despite all the good things, the cast of characters is much weaker than that of IX, the protagonist in particular, although I like Tidus he doesn't even come close to Zidane's feet.
And for me the worst of all are the unbearable minigames to get the heavenly weapons, I almost gave up playing the game when the remaster for pc came out remembering them.

I think this game is a masterpiece that all rpg fans should play. A story that excites and entertains with good gameplay, apart from the soundtrack that rocks.

Sakaguchi's last Final Fantasy, and the last great final fantasy game. The move to full 3D definitely comes with a lot of losses here. Gone is the world map. However, the move to full 3D allows for great scenery, and more importantly, a more personal attachment with the characters. And thats a good thing because the characters are fantastic here, as is the story. There's still a lot of JRPG weirdness, but this might be one of the tightest, most emotional, stories in the franchise.

This is also the height of the turn based combat system and the leveling system. Both the sphere grid and the ability to move characters in and out are exceptional additions. And the gameplay would only go downhill from here.

Tidus and Yuna's love story is basically a blend of the love stories found in Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX. However, the only reason I'm not giving this game a 10 is because of the poorly implemented voice-overs. The 'press X to continue the dialog' made it seem entirely unnatural, and the voices they chose for the characters were from a well known and cliche team that otherwise translates anime sitcoms. The bad voices marred the character personalities. I have to keep in mind, however, that Square Enix deserved some slack for the voice-overs since it's the first time they ever tried it. Expand

But I had trouble really getting into the game - blitzball is basically a meme (it controls terribly) and I had so little direction in some of the early game battles and quests that it took me three or four tries before I made it past the opening sequence of this game.

I quite liked how each party member was different mechanically, with only Waka using his ranged weapon or a magic user being able to hit flying enemies, or Auron using his strength to shatter armored enemies, whereas Tidus' attacks will bounce off of armor. The Sphere Grid is a fake progression system that has no actual choice or depth involved and only exists to waste your time. The process of filling in a spot on the Grid takes several seconds for what should be a one click operation, and that times adds up when you're filling in the grids of 7 characters.

The game aesthetically looks gorgeous and still holds up, much better than the brown hyper-realistic artstyles that became popular later on. The music is a mixed bag. There are some really good tracks but there are a lot of stinkers that are grating to listen to. The English voice acting is... okay.

The game is disappointing when compared to prior games, as the game is linear. There is no world map. You cannot pilot any vehicles.

As for the story, it's okay. The characters are likeable enough, but the story really stalls out around the half way mark.

While instantly aesthetically displeasing and having bad writing and bad voice acting [really campy b-movie level], it really did seem like it was an 8/10 early on. As the game goes on it becomes more and more abrasive for many reasons.

-The random encounters are all rock paper scissors fights where you hit really heavy and so do they, so you have to manually heal your party after every single battle

-They hype up this big sports game in the story, then when you finally get to play it, it is a rigged match made for you loose badly in, and then instead of that mattering for the story like they hyped it to, the game disappears into the menu at save spots as an optional minigame

-there are very annoying puzzles with unnecessary menus that pop up anytime you want to do something

-There are very few enemy types, they get reused often and in the same exact combinations

-There are very very cheap enemies that can wipe out your entire party before you even have a turn later on, making them harder than bosses

    -the protagonist is exceedingly dumb

-a sex scene happens completely out of no where with no lead up romance

-there is a race of people who speak a different language, and you find books that teach you one letter each, and you never piece it together. You are supposed to combine the letters your friends have found on the same game system by combining the save files. So you go through the game watching all this dialogue in a different language annoyed that you can't understand it and are missing parts of the story.

-the airship in this game is unusable

-they didn't bother to lip-sync the characters to the english audio

-an entire level where you have to constantly be on edge for lighting to hit you

    -and you can't skip cutscenes

This last point brings me to where I quit. After a 5 minute long cutscene, I was faced with a boss that killed one of my party members before I even had a turn, and then later killed them all in one hit. When you get a game over, it doesn't offer to reload from the start of the fight or the cutscene OR your last save file. It goes back to loading the main menu. You have to click through to prevent the opening movie to play, load your game, walk back to where you were, and sit through the same poorly written, poorly acted cutscene again, only to face the same poorly designed boss.

I truly do not know why this game is highly regarded, I am more disappointed in the community than the game.

It does this with what seems like a minor issue, but what (for me, at least) turned me off this world right off the bat: absolutely atrocious voice acting. For me, this very simple act of switching to voice acting but not maintaining quality is totally unforgivable. The main characters of Tidus and Yuna are unfortunately the worst of the bunch, though it doesn't help that every single character is a flat stereotype. No character is likeable, and Tidus I can only describe like every other negative review here: annoying, whiny and douchy.

The English translation feels very clunky and unnatural. Japanese games seem to have a problem with this, for some odd reason. This is something that has existed in every Final Fantasy game, but not until I actually heard it with my own ears did I realize how bad it was. I can forgive some offences (silly plot and character design, mainly), just because by now it is a more or less an established staple of these games, but breaking my immersion with the voice acting and the bad characters left me with no sense of personal involvement, which was enough for to really turn on the game. Not having relatable or likeable main characters in a game of this genre is unforgivable.

This combined with the overabundance of cutscenes (unskippable, BTW), uncreative and linear level up system, and the early signs of hallway-itis (brought to it's absolute apex with the perhaps even more horrible FFXIII) make this game that breaking point where the Final Fantasy series seemed to veer off a cliff for me. And I have greatly enjoyed every FF so far, even the divisive VIII.

FFX has set a dangerous example because since it's release and subsequent success, Square Enix seem to be putting all their focus on world and creature design and cutscene animation, with the actually relevant things (character writing, plot and an explorable game world) becoming nothing more than afterthoughts. So basically style over substance. A shame.

I don't see the appeal of this series as a whole. I tried to like it and invested around 15 hours, but it simply wasn't engaging. The graphics don't impress me either. The combat rarely involves strategy, and the game progresses in an unbareably linear way (hint* move forward). The level up system looks complex and deep, but in reality it's very simple. Usually you don't even get to choose what attribute you want to improve, just follow along a set path of leveling up. The only thing that I somewhat liked was the airy fairy story. While wimpy and overly pretend religious, it was entertaining and did make me care about the characters. Even if Tidus is the type of guy you might find in a beauty salon in real life. One more thing I'll complain about... The cut scenes all have different graphical styles and were done by different artists. Some look amazingly real, and others look not quite perfect versions of the characters you see during gameplay. Expand

I just cannot believe how shocking Yuna's voice acting is... and how whiney Tidius sounds. The characters are so irritating, it's beyond the beyond. The game would have been infinitely more enjoyable if they made the time between battles and level explorations random, rather then exactly 20 seconds, sometimes even less. Great graphics, boring story, voice acting sucks. Not to mention, i thought i bought a game with cut scenes, not a movie with some interaction. Way too many cut scenes that you can't friggin skip.

Reading over all the bad reviews for this game, of which there are surpisingly many, you can see a thread running through the complaints. -What seems to annoy some about FFX (including me) is that it's more like a movie than a game where you're watching rather than playing. The game is way too easy. The sphere system sucks and robs the players of their freedom. Blitzball is a sorry attempt at a mini-game. The characters are HORRIBLE! Tidus is lackluster in all respects except in the fact that he looks like a transvestite in a halloween costume, not to forget his annoying voice acting. Yuna is also annoying and underdeveloped, and her movements are very awkward. And Seymor is a horrible villain: he looks like a hippy and he sounds like he sat on a spike. Wakka is just as big a sterotype as Jar-Jar Binks, the difference being that you can fastforward the parts with Jar-Jar. In other words, FFX has some of the worst voice acting in videogame history (and this includes Resident Evil). The battle system hasn't really improved over previous FF's, and the character are horrible.. -But to give due praise, the graphics are good (though not great, since they do seem insipid at many points), the music, which is the worst out of all the FF's since FF6, is still good. The ability to control summons is something new. The CGI is top quality. -Yet all these do not make up for the game being so bad. Tidus is the worst protagonist to grace the FF series, and Yuna is the worst heroine, and Seymor is the worst villain in FF history. Of course, those who love the game are perfectly entitled to their views: it's all just a matter of opinion. Expand

The final fantasy series took a downward plunge after the SNES titles n my opinion, but this one really did not appeal to me, the story was slow paced, and the level up system was just not to my liking, I prefer to know what level I am and base my choices of combat on that, not on how many pieces of a grid I have.

I don't see what all the hype is about. This game is hardly a game but more of an interactive movie. I like RPG games alot, but this game is weak. It's really only and RPG in a very minimalist sense.

Even as a movie goes it's rather bad. The acting, dialogue, and plot are cheesy. I didn't like the characters either. They're rather cheesy.

The worst FF in my book. Annoying characters, boring world, way too melodramatic sappy story, way too slow and boring gameplay. The music isn't all that great either and the imagery just falls apart all the time-way too many eye burning colors on every character and place. The whole thing is like a japanese soap opera with a japanese pop star as a main character+ some magic summoner stuff.

The story is god awful; the relationships are rote and simple; there is absolutely no thematic development; the only good song out of a horrendous soundtrack plays maybe twice; the villain might have the worst cliche name in gaming history; but possibly by far, the biggest, most torturous, agonizing flaw is the voice acting - it might have been decent in japanese but the american actors gave no effort, only stretching out insignificant dialogue (which was poorly written to begin with) with complete lethargy, or yelling through the pseudo dramatic moments. It may aspire to be a dramatic story but it fails miserably in every way possible. The gameplay is alright for a FF game; it allows for decent strategizing, but be aware that the only wit involved in FFX will have to be on your part because the creators had none. If you play video games for stories foremost, avoid, or better yet go out of your way to break copies of this if you see them lying around. Expand

Bad animation and bad graphics date this as an early PS2 title. But bad character designs, voice acting, story, and game play are inexcusable. I really can't be bothered with learning how to play water dodgeball with 20 buttons in an RPG.

But to be fair, lets just look at this game for its own merits and not have the weight of the entire series hurt or help it. Although, I doubt all the help in the world would save this game. This "game" is absolutely depressing in its structure. FFX is something like a demonic love-child between a JRPG and an arcade rail-shooter. I guess it can best be described as a "Rail-JRPG", *shudder*. Playing through the game, this was my biggest problem. I felt like I wasn't playing a game, I felt like I was just pressing buttons to advance a dismally terrible story-line. Speaking of said story-line, I think it should win some award for the incredible feat of being equal parts cryptic and terrible. At the start I found it to be okay, some horribly cheesy dunce with a running disorder named "Tidus", gets attacked and eaten by an indecipherable fluorescent lump called "Sin", and gets pooped out into the future where he is met by a bunch of Russians in a poor disposition. The story continues on and only gets worse as you must protect an attractive young religious zealot who's on a quest to "catch them all!" By "all" I mean the same old recycled summons they've been using in the Final Fantasy series for years. In the end, **SPOILER ALERT**, you find out you're actually the physical manifestations of a dream that has been dreamed by a bunch a mysterious cloaked folks. All this dreaming is making them tired of course, so the mysterious cloaked folks give you your life's pink slip. Tidus, being the unemployed bum he is, accepts his pink slip, and by an incredible display of Deus Ex Machina, he wakes up on a beach the next day; driving anyone who had to that point been trying desperately to maintain their grasp of the story-line, to rip their hair out in both frustration and bewilderment. Oh yeah, and there was some stuff about his daddy issues littered about the story-line as well. Honestly, I can find nothing redeemable about this game, in the end, I just found it to be a boring waste of time, the story is linear, the game-play is linear, the leveling system, despite its appearance of complexity, is also depressingly linear. This is literally one of the worst games I've ever played, go ahead and save yourself the trouble by not playing it ever. Expand

  1. We've seen the Final Fantasy epic take us on a memorable journey, but now it all seems like it's been done before. 10 is good, great at times, but it is no longer original.
  2. The replay value is very low, and the design is flawed by an inability to skip past sequences, even in replay mode. The playability also suffers by a lack of freedom of movement.
  3. Great RPG and certainly the best one on the PS2 currently, however, I feel it isn't as great as past FF's have been due to its lack of freedom.
