Even more so than the current generation of consoles. The ending of the game was incredible, I don't think I've ever enjoyed the climax to such a wonderful story so much. And with the secret ending it fits well with the next chapter 'Final Fantasy X-2'. I'm an avid Xbox 360 user, but there is nothing on this generation of consoles which can even match this game. And I don't think there will be for a long long time. If you haven't played this yet, DO IT! Expand

How dare anybody say the long cutscenes are a bad point in this game. They MAKE the game.

The story is something to behold, and had me so emotionally involved that I were playing the game just to find out what happens in the next scene. The addition of Blitzball was perfect - It could be a standalone game! I played that minigame for SO long, and it had you exploring the world scouting for players while doing all of the extra stuff. And that's the thing - There is so much more to do beyond the main story! The additional Aeons to discover, finding the Celestial Weapons (A few of them was very difficult to obtain!) and the Monster Arena were simply amazing additions to the game.
    In short:
Best story I've ever come across. Ever.
Best progression system in any game I've ever played (the Sphere Grid)
Best cutscenes I've ever seen in a game. (In terms of what happens in them and their involvement in the story)
Best 'additional' tasks I've come across. (The monster arena mixed with the pursuit of celestial weapons and aeons easily doubles/triples your gametime)

FFX is the FINAL FANTASY that more I like. Beautiful and sad story, epic characters, ingenious and artistically beautiful world, the best combat system, the best sonorous band of any FF, and finally; a game that stay in my heart forever. Good job Square, Sakaguchi, Nomura and Uematsu.

STUNNING graphics for a 2001 video game, some of the best characters set out on a journey to defeat the almighty creature Sin, who has plagued the land of Spira for a thousand years. This plot may seem cliche but there are so many plot twists and enough character development to keep you at the edge of your seat wanting to play through to find out what happens next. This game is the pinnacle of what every RPG should strive to be, and it pulls out all the stops in the Final Fantasy world. Gone is the active time battle system in favor of a new Condition Turn Based system; allowing a strategic element rather in favor of pummelling them with magic. The new level up system known as the sphere grid is also a very nice touch. It now becomes possible to customize each character the way YOU want them to be, and not how the devs wanted them to turn out. AMAZING game, honestly the last good Final Fantasy from what I've heard, but nevertheless I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good RPG! Expand

    --STORY--
You use Tidus the star player of Zanarkand's Blizball (Underwater soccer) team, the Zananrkand Abes. The monstrous whale-like monster Sin attacks Zanarkand, turning it to nothing but scrap. Tidus is transported to a distant land where he meets the grand summer Braska's daughter, Yuna. Together with their friends they set out to terminate Sin and so Tidus can return back to Zanarkand. --GAMEPLAY--
World map movement feels identical to that of Final Fantasy 7 through to 9. While combat on the other hand returns to that of Final Fantasy (1) to 3 but with an added twist, the Conditional Turn-Based Battle. Once again turns are not timed however it shows the order in which all playable characters and enemies will make a move during battle. With the added feature of being able to adjust your active party during battle, it all feels very fresh, but also familiar to veterans of the series.

One of the two negative points of the game however lies in the game. For the most part the game doesn't feel too easy or hard. However certain bosses feel far to powerful or bosses that are suppose to be iconic and mighty are rather easy.

It can take anywhere between 50-60 hours on average to finish. Around 150 hours is the estimate for 100% completing it. Includes mastering blitzball.

    --SOUNTRACK--
The best soundtrack overall in the series. While it doesn't have as many iconic songs. As an overall soundtrack however the quality is superb and you'll find yourself listening to it well after completing this epic journey. Some fantastic songs are "To Zanarkand" and "Otherworld".

    --CHARACTERS--
While some characters can be annoying sometimes, they are undoubtable the most loveable characters to any game to date. By the end of this, when those credits are rolling, you will feel as if you developed a relationship with the characters. They are some human-like and develop so naturally.

The second bad point. The voice acting is great. However the English dubbing gave some rather serious points some comedic relief. --VISUALS--
The best graphics that ever existed in a video game til it's release. The game's real-time graphics and pre-renders competed throughout the entire life time of it's generation. It looks on par and maybe even better than future generation console, the Nintendo Wii. While kept up with early PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 graphics.

    --CONCLUSION--
There's nothing I can say that hasn't been said before. I just wanted to reinforce that this is a game that everyone should play. Thank you for reading.

"You don’t need to play these games because you need to hear their stories or fight their battles; you need to play them because they let you have an experience unlike anything else in the world."

Now let's mention a few essential points about this game:

    - This is a long game. It will take you a long time to complete it. Cutscenes are very prominent. If you can't take the time to enjoy a well crafted story with interesting characters told at a slow pace, don't buy this game.
    - The battle system is very much vintage Final Fantasy. It is fairly similar to that of previous games in the series. It is turn based.

    Graphics: 8/10

I played this game back in 2003. While the game certainly looks nice, it's definately not 10/10 worthy in this department. The major drawback in terms of graphics is the stiff animations and sometimes awkward facial expressions. Much of this is me subconsiously comparing FFX to that of MGS2, which did far better in this department (in a similar time period). Other than this, the game looks great, plenty of detail, worlds full of life with vibrant colours.

    Gameplay: 9/10

Vintage Final Fantasy. There's not really anything new here. The greatest thing about this game is not the battles themselves, but the ability to build your characters to ungoldy levels. After you finish FFX, you could quite easily spend another 60 hours just finishing post-game content. This includes finding ultimate weapons, fighting various post-game bosses (who are incredibly strong), crafting godly equiptment, maxxing out the sphere grid in ways you never thought were possible ect ect. This is a game where it's entirely possible to max every stat to 255 for every character (and still get your ass kicked by the strongest boss in the game). The game also features several minigames, including blitzball tournaments (underwater football). Most people who actually get into this minigame, find out just how fun and engaging it is. It's almost like another game within FFX.

    Story 10/10

This is a JRPG. Expect a long melodramatic story. Expect interesting characters that you really care about by the end of the game. Expect plot twists. Expect shocks. I have completed this game over 5 times just to see the story again. It's that good. Yes the voice acting can be a tad cheesy at times (mainly due to the accompanying facial expressions which sometimes look a little comedic), but most of the time it is spot on. People are quick to judge Tidus' personality, because he's not like Cloud of Squall. This is not 7/8. The characters are varied and all bring something to the table. The voice acting is, for the most part, top notch. The people telling you otherwise generally just lack the intelligence to see the comedic value behind certain scenes (the laughing scene was purposely cheesy. That was the point).

    Voice acting 9/10

Sometimes it isn't perfect, but it is most of the time. No one sounds the same, voices perfectly match appearances. Yuna sounds like an angel, Auron sounds like a boss.

    Sound 10/10

I don't really pay all that much attention to background music in games, but what I do hear sounds perfect. After you play this game, you'll be hearing the Hymn of the Faith for years.

    Replayability 10/10

As I said, I have finished this game 5 times.

    Overall 10/10

This game is one of the best in the FF franchise (and my personal favourite). The only people telling you this game is horrible, are those that either lack the attention span to play games like this, or can't seem to entertain the fact that FFVII isn't the only FF game. VII wasn't even that good. Seriously. This game is better in every way, it's just that good. (and I would give VII a 10/10).

This is one of the greatest games ever created.

Even more for the first time in Final Fantasy history they created 3D landscapes, used facial animations and voice actors for the characters. Another premiere was that the soundtrack was not completely made by Nobuo Uematsu. For those who don't know him he is the composer for Final Fantasy and is a legend in the industry There are even many orchestras that played his scores and pay tribute to him (Some concerts are available on YouTube). The soundtrack is remarkable with a lot of good tracks. The game is set in the world of Spira. Your main character named Tidus is a sport-star in Blitzball (A kind of underwater water polo). After the monster Sin (Think of a Final Fantasy Godzilla like creature) attacked his hometown he finds himself in an unfamiliar situation. He is 1000 years in the future and Sin is a constant menace to civilization. He meets Yuna a female summoner who is on a pilgrimage to stop Sin (For a while because it cant be destroyed entirely. Summoners can defeat it after they finish their journey earning a brief period of peace before Sin reappears). Together with a group of other characters they experience a great adventure. The story itself is really enjoyable with good twists but has some awkward moments (The laughing scene for example). The characters won me easily over. There is a complaint that Tidus has no influence in the story. I disagree as he is the catalyst and driving force. For character development: Instead of direct leveling you earn experience and can move on a huge board called Sphere Grid. You can place the corresponding spheres on it and get stat boost or learn abilities. Each character starts on different places so you have different roles. Also each character has some special skills. The active time turn based battle system is excellent. There are some good battles. There is the most memorable battle in any Final Fantasy game for me. You will certainly die at the first attempt and it was remarkable to puzzle out a strategy. Some other battles were good too. There are a lot of mini games. Some are required to get important items. The main mini game is Blitzball. It is like a sport league. You can hire new players, learn abilities and participate in championships. I enjoyed it a lot but I am in the minority here as most players disliked the mini game. For me I liked the challenge and gameplay. I give you a few tips: The max damage and HP value does not stop at 9999 but you need items with the corresponding expanding ability (up to theoretically 99999). There are ultimate weapons for each character but you must unlock them with 2 additional items obtained in mini games. Some are really difficult (and annoying). So it is easier to buy blank items later on and add the abilities to them. There is much side content for you to do and hidden items. There is a lot of endgame content too. The hardest main story bosses are nowhere near the many additional bosses. Solve the puzzles in the temples when you are there. After a certain event some super bosses roam certain parts of the world. Grinding helps a lot early on and there are some battles where you cant change your characters. A solo battle with Kimahri has good steal-able loot. Level 3 and 4 sphere keys are valuable items. For Blitzball: Wait until you get the airship. A character named Brother is the ultimate player early on and Tidus special ability is nearly unstoppable (learned a few hours into the game). Back to the review. There is a hidden language for you to learn. You find new letters and get to understand it more and more. Like I already mentioned the are a few flaws. There are some poor choices in the story and Tidus can be a bit annoying. I disliked some mini games with passion and while the conclusion is fitting it is also a bit of a downer. Overall while it is not my favorite Final Fantasy game it is still really good and the positives outweight the flaws. I recommend it for RPG fans and there is a bundle with Final Fantasy 10-2 available. Expand

In my opinion this is the best final fantasy game since FF7. The story of the game is brilliant and just makes you want to play on until you finish it. the graphics of the game are brilliant and the game also shows great character development especially for the 2 main protagonists

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've loved every Final Fantasy game made before next generation systems came out (13 was terrible IMO) but none of them ever made me fall in love with the characters as perfectly as this one did. I actually cried when Tidus faded away. Imagine that, a little fat kid sitting in his chair on a Friday night crying over pixels. It happened.

This game didn't invent the premise of RPGs nor did it do anything overly revolutionary with regards to battle sequences or graphics, but the story was simply amazing. I grew to absolutely hate Seymour and my heart broke when Auron's true motive was revealed. The settings were whimsical without being stereotypical and the sphere grid remains my favorite RPG leveling system ever.

I felt like this game, along with FFX12 and Legend of Dragoon didn't get the praise they deserved from critics because those critics expected the same kinds of things that they currently expect from huge franchises who are stuck between a rock and a hard place. It's impossible to fully revolutionize a successful series without changing something about its successful past and I think that's evident in the lacking grades on here. I think the remaster of this game is bringing it back to life and I'm excited about it.

FFX remains one of the best games I've ever played and, as far as stories and character development go, may be the best I've ever encountered. I've played hundreds of RPGs from front to back and none of them kept me quite as engaged as FFX did. Hats off to the incredible development team and especially to the musicians who made this score; music is always forgotten in movie and game reviews!

In 1997 Final Fantasy VII would erupt onto the scene, in 1998 no FF, but we got Xenogears. In 1999, Final Fantasy VIII, 2000 Final Fantasy IX and then this one was released in 2001. Then we would enter the dark ages when they would release fewer games and they would not be as good as these four of the ones released on the SNES. Sure, I sort of liked Final Fantasy X-2, but it seemed some of the things they did in that game were kind of lazy such as not changing the appearances of some of the characters and not really adding a few more locations to explore in Spira. Still, I found that game more enjoyable than Final Fantasy XII (never played XI) which had a combat system I did not care for at all and characters that seemed like rehashes of characters in this particular game. This game is the first entry of a FF game for the PS2 and it was a great entry in my mind. That being said, it was not quite as enjoyable to me as part IX, but that FF game still ranks as my favorite game in the series because it has the look and feel of the old SNES ones, but has a wonderful 3D world crafted around it. This one takes a bit more realistic approach as far as character design, but it works and this one also features actual voices for the characters during cut scenes and all through the adventure.

The story has a young man named Tidus who is the son of a man who was a star blitz ball player (the popular sport of this world). He lives in a city called Zanarkand and his father is missing. He too, has become a star blitz ball player and he is doing his thing when the city comes under assault from this creature called 'Sin'. A man named Auron assists Tidus battle monsters that emerge from Sin and soon the young man is transported away from his home. He awakens in a cold and old abandoned temple where he meets these people who speak a different language and he assists them and soon finds himself washed away again to a small village that is home to a person called a summoner. Soon Tidus joins this girl and her guardians as they go on a quest to Zanarkand to defeat the all powerful Sin as the summoner must go to various temples to gain the power to summon the final Aeon.

This game does a couple of things differently than other FF games as there are several playable characters and like most FF games only a certain number can be in the battle, in this case three. However, what it does differently is that you can switch out characters so that every character can be instrumental in defeating the enemy. This comes in handy as this helps you level up everyone in the party. That is another difference as it incorporates something called a sphere grid as opposed to the normal experience points and level ups. In this one, you traverse a grid to gain more strength, hit points, magic etc. It's great and you can have all your characters powered up to the extreme and using magic. They still retain differences and are unique as each of them uses a different weapon and armor piece. They also have different special attacks called limits so all the heroes are distinct in this one.

So, I enjoyed this Final Fantasy game quite a lot. A lot of people these days like to crap on the character of Tidus, but I thought he was a rather good hero. The main reason for the hate is that stupid laughing scene, which does not encompass but a small fragment of the game. My favorite character though is Auron as he is so mysterious, so cool and so powerful! The villain in this one is a bit different in that it is almost a mindless creature (Sin); however, like many Final Fantasy games a true enemy will be revealed at the end and there is another villain named Seymour who just oozes bad guy from the moment you see him. This game could be considered linear in nature to an extent, but nothing like XIII. Here you actually stop in towns and interact with townsfolk and such, but there is a lot of journeying through different areas. The scenery is nice so I actually liked the way it played out. They remastered the game and I guess it looks better, but it was not as if this one really needed that major of an upgrade as far as graphics. Honestly, the PS2's graphics hold up well as the newer systems simply add more details such as better sweat or stuff like that rather than character models. So, this one would be a great addition to the FF series, too bad it hasn't been as good since it debuted, but FFXV was pretty awesome.

Well.. Here we go. My goodbye to FFX. I have played and replayed this game some six or seven times. In my long and varied gaming career, I generally don't hand out perfect 10's. Not even to Ocarina of Time, and other fan favorites. But this game has always held a special place within me. Enough waxing sentimental, I'm here to review.

So, the combat. It was a fresh re-imagining of the traditional turn based RPG style. It removed a great deal of clutter from the way things work, and replaced them with depth and customization. Battles work just like they would have with ATB (assuming it was set to the Wait Mode) but you don't have to sit and watch bars fill, or try to guess how many turns you'll have before the enemy gets their turn in. I found it relieving, quick paced, and strategic. Which is everything I could ask for in an RPG's battle system.

Leveling, Personally, I find this to be the single greatest piece, which is saying a great deal. The sphere grid seems overwhelming at first, two dimensional second, but once you get far enough into it to be choosing from branching paths, and then eventually customizing it... I haven't played any RPG with a leveling system I prefer to it. I have spent hundreds of hours, no exaggeration, with this game in the sphere grid, customizing and optimizing. I have filled out the whole sphere grid, and replaced all replaceable spheres. I've played it to death, and still love it dearly.

The story. My gods, the story. it was wonderful, it was beautiful. You start off with a whiny point of view character, dragged from the lap of comfort and adoration into a world full of death and sorrow. And he grows. He grows well. But despite being the main character, he is not the central character. He tells the story, but in truth, it isn't his own. From the moment he meets her, the entire story revolves around Yuna. Some things take place off screen, to be certain. But she is a strong female lead, faithful and virtuous without compromising on strength. She upturns an entire religion, and the entire world with it. She has help from her guardians. But where any choice is made, it was hers to make, and she made them well.

The story is littered with melancholy and death. And yet, Yuna smiles. And Yuna dances. A pillar of hope for a dying world. She is a wonderful character, and is supported by a cast that feels both interesting and believable in personality. Of all the FF's stories, and I've played them all numerous times, X's stands at the peak. Assuming we don't count X-2's Addition, which I won't for a thousand varied and spiteful reasons.

Gameplay aspects: Well, some things suffer here. Blitzball was entertaining for a bit, then quickly became a tedious chore. Walking everywhere prior to the ship can be tiring due to how the map works out, but the way the map works out is actually a plus in my mind. All of the areas were connected by traversible paths. No need for a world map to travel the world, though you got one later with the airship. But the world felt real, and felt whole. Something to be pleased with. Exploration and finding goodies was hit or miss. Honestly, FFIX did it better for little goodies and easter eggs being put everywhere to keep you looking. Collecting ten of every monster for the arena is again an arduous chore. Despite all of this, the payoff is well worth it, and X is more than the sum of its parts.

Audio: The music in the game is some of the finest in gaming. I once had a chance to ask Nobuo Uematsu one question in person, at a con in Milwaukee, WI during his Distant Worlds tour. I asked him "what would you say was your magnum opus? The finest song you have ever made. What you were born to compose." and after some deliberation he replied "To Zanarkand, though I'd like to think my magnum opus is still ahead of me." (paraphrasing of course. Even if I remembered the exact quote, this was being translated by an intermediary.) The music is the glue that holds the game's story together. It is well composed and touching. There was a song or two I wasn't the biggest fan of, but overall, it was a very pleasing soundtrack.

Well, I guess that about wraps things up. While X has flaws and isn't perfect in all aspects, the strengths it has more than compensates. Thank you FFX. We had over ten years together, and I enjoyed you thoroughly. The last and greatest piece by Sakaguchi. The truly named Final Fantasy. Having platinumed the whole game and played enough that I know what is in every chest before I open it, it's time we part ways. But I hope others will find and love you as dearly as I did.

It is unlike any other game that I have ever played and even quite different from other Final Fantasy games. It is like an epic fairy tale with elements that are both literal and allegorical. It isn't a simple story about heroes fighting villains. While Final Fantasy games are often known for having complex villains, the villains are usually still pretty obvious, FFX doesn't have a clear cut antagonist. It is a story that gradually reveals a complex system that is deeply rooted in lore. Sometimes the people who seem like obvious villains are just damaged people who are twisted by circumstance and sometimes well meaning people who are desperate to protect what they love most give rise to a cycle of mass destruction that no weapon can stop. FFX is a story about a lot of things, sin, faith, sacrifice, but most of all I think it is about loss. All of these themes are all dealt with in a meaningful way. I have played through this game a few times and one thing that impresses me is that each time I picked up on something new. Nearly every scene is more than it appears to be on the surface. A lot of the story telling is in the subtext and the environment. FFX isn't perfect but it is one of the best video game experiences of my life and a game that I still think about often even 15 years later.

While the plot may seem confusing at first almost everything is eventually revealed. I could write several pages about the story of FFX and all of its nuances. Sin is one of the most interesting monsters in fiction, it isn't just a giant beast that destroys without purpose. Everything about sin is rooted in lore. Its origins and purpose are deeply tied to the magic, history, and religion of the world. Religion is one thing that is really well captured in FFX. Yevon is not intrinsically good or evil, it has many good elements but it is also full of corruption. Throughout the story we encounter many examples of people who are faithful to Yevon and for the most part very good people but their blind faith in Yevon has led them to accept certain things about the world as truth without every calling those beliefs into question. There are so many great things that I could say about the story, it does have a few weak points as most big complex stories do but its few short comings are dramatically overshadowed by what it does right.

The visual design is spectacular, even to this day the cinematics rank among the best in any game. The environments are unfortunately small and confined but they all tell a visual story. There are a few stupid designs, like Seymour's hair and Tidus' clothes but for the most part the designs are top notch. The game still looks pretty good and at the time of it's release it was on another level.

The sound design is also among the best in the series. The sound track is one of my favorites and it
is perfectly used within the context of the story. Some of the voice acting isn't the best but as the first FF with voice acting I think it is good, far better than most of that time period.

I think the combat system is one of the best in the series. Each character is useful, while each enemy has particular strengths and weaknesses that you need to carefully test to figure out. Each character also has unique overdrives. Many of the overdrives look awesome and require skill to take full advantage of making them rewarding. Each spell also has a useful strategic purpose. Enemies can also use spells such as reflect to bounce them leading to unconventional situations. While there aren't quite as many summonings as some of the past FF games there is a decent amount and each one is very unique. The aeons all look awesome and they are useful without being overpowered. Outside of combat the game play is much less impressive, you spend most of your time walking or running along paths with very little interaction.

The characters in FFX are also excellent but they don't have the obvious appeal as some of the past games in the series. Tidus for example, is totally different from past heroes in the series. He doesn't start out as a great warrior or magic user. He starts out as a bit cocky, a bit shallow, and a bit selfish but that is only on the surface and as the story progresses we learn how he came to be the way he is and we also learn that he does indeed have a lot of good qualities. He is fleshed out both through character growth and through revelations about his past. He is an outsider in a strange world and that is used to great effect. Nearly all of the main characters are well fleshed out and every character has a meaningful roll within the story and gameplay.

    I give FFX a 93%

There will never be a game that surpasses the story of this one, never ever.

It has the best (more humane) story writing and character development. Everything hits really close.

We could say that is the best FF, if not, a top 3 for sure.

FF10 is one the best Final Fantasy games out there. It has a great story, characters and music on par with the previous entries. It's a game that bleeds with emotion and tells a tragic tale that fits the tone of the end of Squaresoft. It's a game that bleeds with emotion and tells a tragic tale that fits the tone of the end of Squaresoft. I consider this the last Final Fantasy game, as it is the last one that actually had a genuinely great story, characters and music. It's also the last single player mainline Final Fantasy game by Squaresoft as well. Coincidence? I think not. I consider FF6-10 to be the Golden Age of FInal Fantasy.

This game isn't perfect, but its bloody-well brilliant. The only criticisms I can think of that is that its a bit linear as it sacrifices its overworld, however this means it tells a much better story because of it. It also can get a bit complex and convoluted towards the end, but I'd argue aren't most Final Fantasy games like that towards the end, e.g. FF7, FF8 and FF9? Lastly, the main protagonist Tidus gets a bit of hate online. Haters claim he is annoying and irritating and has bad voice acting. Fair enough, he's definitely whiny at the beginning, but by the end of the game his character development is very present, he becomes a complete badass and doesnt whine anymore. Instead of whining to others about their plans and hard truths, in the end it is him who leads the reigns and whom everyone follows. I love Tidus and I think his voice acting is great for the most part and suits him very much. I'd argue that it is the voice direction in the game that is sometimes off. other than that it is fine.

I think the only the thing I dislike about this game is that fact that you can't skip cutscenes -_- (doesn't help on multiple playthroughs). Other than that it's one of the greatest video games ever created in my opinion and has shaped me to become the person I am today. :)

This is one of the best stories I have ever seen. This game was so ahead of it's time. Everything was done very well and there are few issues I've ever experienced with it.

If you've never played final fantasy games, this is a great place to start (although not many others live up to this one imo). It's pretty straightforward but also has a lot of hidden things.

The game has an amazing soundtrack and a really enjoyable turn-based battle system, which I see as an improvement compared to the previous titles.

But what truly makes this game is the world, the story and the characters. It's just perfect, the design of the characters are a little bit silly and the main character (Tidus) can be a little annoying sometimes, but otherwise it's excellent!

Somehow, the series was able to surpass itself since its last 10/10 title, FFVII.

To top it off, I find this title to be an excellent first game for people that want to get into the series. Final Fantasy X is truly the Final Fantasy, as it is the last title made by the original cast of the series for Square soft (before it merged to become Square Enix).
Square soft might have passed away, but it did it in spectacular way. 10/10 masterpiece.

The voice acting was superb for its time, 2001, and everyone was amazed by the sheer amount of voiced dialogues back then.
The infamous "Tidus' laugh" was meant to be awkward and stupid:
he's a teenager trying to hit on the girl he likes by being silly and make her laugh - this is how teenagers work.

Absolutely one of the best FF games, and RPGs, ever made.
A great story, with some big plot twists in it, and a romance between the main characters that never fells odd or forced.
The graphics were insane for the time and so was the music too. This soundtrack is simply amazing.
In 2001 there weren't actual side-quests, but FF games had something like that and FFX does no less. These extra-activities were mainly mini games that serves to unlock special weapons... plus, a certain something called Blitzball:
A side-game tied both with FFX lore and with various characters background. Great addition.

But... there are flaws. Mainly in the battle system:
This FF comes without an ATB system, rendering the fights more dull and slow.
In other words: A bit too easy and unchallenging (the main story battles at least).

This aside it was a virtually perfect game, mind you that this game got released in 2001.

This game made me fall in love with the FF franchise, after mistakenly hated it because of the OG FF7 I was young and naive at the time to understand the mechanics.

The graphics for its time, the music, the story, the unique universe on every FF game, voice acting for Tidus could have been a little better, this game got me hooked for months that I never regret spending on it.

If you were to ask what people's favorite Final Fantasy game would be, more often than not it would be the first one you've played due to the nostalgic and emotional attachment they may have with it. When I first saw this gameIf you were to ask what people's favorite Final Fantasy game would be, more often than not it would be the first one you've played due to the nostalgic and emotional attachment they may have with it. You can play other games in the series before or since that one, and yet you will still hold that first game in highest regard. FFX is that Final Fantasy for me. When I first saw this game back in the early 2000s, I was blown away. I had never seen any game like it up to that point, RPG or otherwise. Sure, it's begun to show cracks and feels dated in a few spots, but none of those issue take away the fact that I believe this to be one of the best RPGs ever made.

FFX chronicles the tale of a big shot sports player named Tidus, who winds up over 1000 years past his time after coming into contact with a humongous creature called Sin. He gets wrapped up with a summoner named Yuna, along with her bodyguards, who are on a pilgrimage to defeat the creature. I found the storytelling and world building to be immensely engaging. All the different races you come across, the religion and culture, and of course the different characters. I enjoy every member of the party in some form or fashion, including Auron, Yuna, Wakka, and, yes, even Tidus. Each of the characters have their own stand-out moments and watching each of them grow throughout the game is satisfying. Even the romance between Yuna and Tidus I found to be believable and even pretty heart-breaking. While some of the character motivations are incredibly flawed, and certain plot elements can feel downright stupid, the game never loses my interest. This was also the first FF game at the time to feature fully voiced cutscenes with full-fledge cinematography. While certainly dated in many respects (some of the animations, weird shot transitions and odd voice direction), for a first go this is remarkably impressive. The game still looks and sounds stellar for an early PS2 title as well, with colorful cutting-edge visuals, terrific soundtrack, and voice acting that still holds up for the most part.

The game is a mix of linear exploration and traditional turn-based gameplay. This is the first game since FFIII to return back to a turn-based formula, and for my money it's some of the best combat the series has to offer. It's fast and strategic, allowing you to swap party members on the fly to account for any situation. There's strong, flashy finishers you can pull off, tons of weapon and armor upgrades and abilities, and the series' tried and true summons that now you can control manually. Leveling up this time around is done via this massive sphere grid, where as long as you have the appropriate spheres you'll have the opportunity to customize your party to your specifications (even being able to fill out the grid in its entirety and bleeding off into other characters' sections). The exploration, while linear, still offers enough deviation to make it worth exploring. You'll also come across the occasional mini-games, which are pretty hit-and-miss. For every great one like the Monster Arena, there's Blitzball, Chocobo Races and Lightning Dodges, and many are required to achieve characters' ultimate weapons. Unless you are very patient, most of them are not really worth going after.

FFX ain't perfect. Not by a long shot. It feels dated in many respects, many of the mini-games are a chore and some of the story is flat out dumb. That being said, I don't care. I consider it a flawed masterpiece. Whenever I give a game a 10, it's not because I think a game is perfect, but because not only do I think it emotionally connects with me, what it does right, it vastly outweighs any shortcomings. I consider it to be a gold standard. FFX is a game I have loved for close to 20 years, and I'm certain I'll continue loving it for many more.

This was the last final fantasy game to have a truly amazing story and it was truly a great one. The ending in particular was incredible.
This was also the last final fantasy game to have an absolutely incredible soundtrack. I wouldn't say I like it as much as 4,6,7 or 9 but it's very close to the the being as good as those games. The battle theme is the best battle soundtrack in the franchise in my opinion.
The combat is also the best in the franchise for me. The turn based system flows perfectly and the battle speed is perfect.
Graphically it was also amazing for its time and it still holds up really well today.
As for flaws it does have some questionable diologue and voice acting, it's very sparse though.
It's minigames are for sure one the games biggest flaws. Blitzball for example is absolutely terrible mechanically.
It also doesn't have the traditional airship mechanic where you could actually fly it around whilst a beautiful soundtrack plays in the background.
Some of its bosses are kinda poorly designed as well, however there are some great ones too.

  1. We've seen the Final Fantasy epic take us on a memorable journey, but now it all seems like it's been done before. 10 is good, great at times, but it is no longer original.
  2. The replay value is very low, and the design is flawed by an inability to skip past sequences, even in replay mode. The playability also suffers by a lack of freedom of movement.
  3. Great RPG and certainly the best one on the PS2 currently, however, I feel it isn't as great as past FF's have been due to its lack of freedom.
