The environments are beautifully decorated, light rays and under water visual and sound effects make the whole experience feel dreamy. The ambience and décor, plus the music leave you under no illusion that things are getting serious as the difficulty smoothly increases with each level you complete.
The mission is simple, be the first to get 100 points by eating various body parts sinking from random places in the waters' surface. Sounds easy, right? Add into the mix a horde of zombified mean-ass piranha looking harbingers of death, each equipped with throwing starfish, sea urchin mines and torpedoes. For extra flavour, add electrified jellyfish, snapping turtles and sharks, all looking to take their pound of flesh. Now garnish with falling bombs and other hazards to taste. Serve with white wine. Still sound easy?
Your saving grace is that this same arsenal is also available to you. The choice of weapons is fun and fitting, each designed to suit different use cases. I really like the throwing starfish which are subject to water physics and curve over a distance, making them better for short range attacks. Torpedoes are great fun, I particularly like the aiming monocle, the aiming reticle only appears when you are looking directly at your target.
The fish are fun and comical, with names like Hillbilly Willy and Toe Bitin' Tommy. You get the choice to be one of four different characters which you can customise to your liking with choices of skins and eye/fin/belly colours.
Keeping in mind that this review was done before an early access release, there are a few areas that could do with attention.
The load time seemed excessive and caused windows to prompt to wait or close the app. This is offset by the lack of load time when progressing the next level.
I was unable to change the keys to match my somewhat unorthodox preferences. I’m told this will be rectified in a future update.
The main menu lacks visual punch. I found rotating the character using the menu clunky and jittery.
The HUD could do with larger health and armour indicators.
I found the performance flawless, the movement physics are fluid and the feel of zero gravity will leave you feeling jealous of sea life. Overall I feel this is a very exciting title, the visuals are superb and the whole game gives off an air of furious fun. I look forward to seeing how Zombie Deathrace Feeding Frenzy develops.… Expand
