  • Summary: In 1990, the year of X-Out’s initial release on Amiga, it stood out as a breath of fresh seaside air in the stale shoot 'em-up space. Partly, because it didn’t take part in “space” as so many games of its genre did (and still do) but instead went for a dive through underwater worlds.

In 1990, the year of X-Out’s initial release on Amiga, it stood out as a breath of fresh seaside air in the stale shoot 'em-up space. Partly, because it didn’t take part in “space” as so many games of its genre did (and still do) but instead went for a dive through underwater worlds.

But what really pushed it further than its other side-scrolling competitors was its shop system allowing players to mix and match from a wide variety of ships, weapons, and other accessory parts to build their fleet making every playthrough (attempt) feel different and unique.

Now 2025 X-Out the highly challenging underwater shoot ‘em up from game developer legends Rainbow Arts is finally returning.

ININ and Ziggurat have collaborated to bring you a faithful remake completely rebuilt from the ground up and greatly improved.

If you want a great modern update to a side-scrolling classic… this is a good choice. It has just the right amount of visual enhancement to not look stale whilst not losing its retro charm. The levels are quite brutal but repeated attempts help you get the hang of how to tackle the enemies. If side-scrolling gaming is your thing… give it a go.

X-Out Resurfaced is a faithful remake of the 1990 classic, preserving its challenging gameplay, retro visuals, and customization system, but missing opportunities to modernize key mechanics.

While many shooters deliver the sensation of being a formidable war machine, Resurfaced channels the tension of a being on a nerve-wracking bombing run. From the floating mines on the surface, regiments of fast-moving opponents that race through narrow passageways, to the army of cannons that line every surface, adversity is ever-present.

X-Out: Resurfaced is faithful to the original in most ways, both good and bad, and does what you would expect from a remake of this type of game. The game mechanics won't blow you away, but it's a classic, difficult shoot 'em up that won't leave fans of the genre dissatisfied.
