i just wish it was better polished, it could be a great game.

Overall I found We Happy Few frustrating. Underneath the repetitive atmosphere and gameplay is a great story wanting to be told well, and the game nearly does that but just falls short. If you can manage to push through the gameplay, the story is great.

I anticipated much, much better from the creators of the magnificent Constrast. That game was cute, stylish, but besides this, had a great story and the world didn't irritate you. It had really great characters. And here we go, We Happy Few... The game was so hyped that I was ready to enjoy the title praised by so many. But after spending like 5 hours in the game, I simply don't get it. II anticipated much, much better from the creators of the magnificent Constrast. The game was so hyped that I was ready to enjoy the title praised by so many. But after spending like 5 hours in the game, I simply don't get it. I wasn't completely immersed in this world in single moment, because there was something to irritate me at any moment. The story seems pointless, you have to escape the city... so? And it stards to abruptly, you don't have much time to explore this world before you get smashed. Characters seems sweet, of course, but they also feel as much dull. The story is artificially prolonged all the time.

The logic in this game is non-existent. For example, the "happy" people are jumping all the way in while you walk the town, like a wild rabits, but when you try to do it, you get instantly smashed by the police! The con noted by practicly everyone: when you irritate someone, everybody in the bloody town get mad at you! Every fckin one! And of course I'm not talking about out best friends glitches and bugs. Well, glitches, mostly. NPC inhabiting the town walk into textures all the time, especially if you actually try to pay attention to what they do (something the developer probably hoped you won't do). All the cops are patrolling in the night and catch everyone on their way because walking in the night is prohibited, but if you simply sit down with a newspaper (for real?) they won't notice you! NPC are always noticing instantly when you try to stalk them, but they won't notice it if it's somebody else, not you. Amusing, really?

The gameplay. Crafting if ok, all right. Stealth is not so bad, though the running time of your protagonist is extremely low. But, of my gosh, this fighting system! It's nightmarish, without any overestimation. You can't defent yourself properly in this game at all. Your Arthur-boy simply fights like a child! In a game, where fighting matters, yeah?

Everything which I described is made to make you suffer more in this game. And suffer not in a good way. I understand the genre this game is made in, so I understant what you may say: it's dystopia, it's supposed to be that way! No, it really isn't.

The visuals are more than decent, that is true. But how many games we have today which are readly to present to us their magnifique graphics, but lacks in story and gameplay departments? You're right: plenty of them!

Overall, not very enjoyable game to play. Save your money. This developer really should focus on games more like their past one, Contrast.

The idea was interesting but the execution was lacking and the gameplay felt really really tedious and boring.Story and characters were alright and so were the songs and the visuals. If they didn't made it into an open world and focused more on the story and aesthetic of their world it would've been alot better.Buy it when its price is half off

So let me cover what the game is like and what it does right. I think the basic gameplay is good, it's like Fallout in that you search around for odds and ends to do various tasks like pick locks. But unlike other games you don't get a super ray gun or cyber armor, you have to scrape by with whatever you can find, fend off police with a stick or a shovel, sneak through a comp of soldiers with grenades, you get the idea. All the systems like combat or drug effects are implemented poorly but in theory they'd make a great game.

The premise is compelling, you're basically trying to escape a dystopia in which people take their happy pills or get beaten. So much as running in public will have every citizen out for your blood (once you are in certain towns). And the progress feels slower and slower and mechanics become a chore.

Arthur and Ollie are well voice acted and have some character development and lines that are amusing. The pros end there though. The story is conveyed in a very poor fashion with uninteresting flashbacks that don't answer any questions. The backstory and worldview aren't clear enough to make the dramatic moments matter. The parts intended as funny make you wince and parts intended as serious seem like parody. It tries to reel you into an alternate history of world war 2 but all you'll be left with is a sob story about Arthur's personal pining for his brother.

I wouldn't say the graphics or sound are good either. The graphical stylings are potentially interesting, combining 60s styling and psychedelic posters with supposedly meaningful WW2 references. Spy and mind control themes linger as well. Too bad it generally falls flat or looks like a bunch of things thrown together to make a mess. You can see that the game clearly had a big budget and a lot of people involved, it debuted at $60. I see no excuse for the all round weakness it has. Most reviews mention bugs a lot which is another downside.

One thing that comes to mind when you see the painted faces of the happy pill people is the similar faction in the film "A Boy and His Dog". But supposedly that's a coincidence. You'll be reminded of various vintage fare like The Prisoner, but if playing this game is the other choice I'll stay blue pilled. Ciao gamers.

The backlash is just desserts to greed, incompetence, mismanagement. Whether they stem from the publisher's influence, or from the developer is absolutely no concern of mine. It was a mess when it launched into Early Access 2 years ago, and it is a mess now. Somehow, it managed to become even more of a mess. Yet another testament to why one should avoid Early Access.

The concept and world were interesting ideas to be sure, but the implementation was poor and the game-play is uninspired. Not only that, the pricing is a bit dodgy as well, at $60 for the base game and a $40 season pass for a game that should be priced at $29.99 flat. They try to point out that they told everyone they would spike up the price, but that doesn't justify bad actions. It's up to you to fight the dark, sleazy future of gaming. Do not buy this game, not even to try it and then refund. The chances to get infected or plagued or bleeding so small one can go through the game without ever being afflicted and there is no reason to eat anything rotten anyway so why?

This game is like a Fallout knockoff. Trying to keep you with stories and such, but lacks any of the exciting game-play instead having stealth against a rather stupid AI. The bobbies are hardly a threat, The nosy old ladies are just regular npc now. Only the doctors can be a bother, but you have to actually walk into them for them to start noticing and even then just walking away gets them off your back 9/10 times. Once you peeve somebody off it becomes night impossible to get rid in a busy area as EVERY npc you encounter goes berserk even if the one you peeved off is nowhere close.

It doesn't take long before you just end up walking from one point to the other over and over to get tiny bits of story before being sent of on the 1000th "Fetch this item for me!". The randomness of the maps has no consequence either sometimes putting kilometers between 2 objectives and being generally uninteresting... again it is just downright boring.

It feels like a waste of time to play this game.

I would dare to argue that this game should have an overall score of about 7, or even 7+ but that's just my opinion. Players forget that it's not another game from big guys like CDProject Red (Still don't know what does it mean). I suppose the main problem with this is that is should be a smaller game but better. Cool game. Especially fascinating universe dystopia, when you have no choice. The plot at 7, quite tedious. Very cool gameplay, there is a tree of skills, there is a composing RPG - inventory and craft, but you don’t have to survive. It is a pity that not many people noticed the game, because it has a huge meaning.

One of the biggest issues with the game, isn't the bugs, lagging, or pop ins, its the price.... I could see this game running at around 30 dollars, then it would be a recommended on my list to pick up, but as of right now, even the special that's running isn't worth it. Sure you get to play through an interesting single player campaign, but at times it feels dull, repetitive, and the combat is just clunky at times. To best describe this, it feels a bit like Dishonored, Bioshock, Prey, in a drug fueled world where you have to watch your health, sleep, and stamina. Your weapons as well degrade over use, and can find this game to be challenging at times. One nice part though is you can choose which difficulty suits you. Either Permadeath, Easy, Medium, Custom, or Sandbox coming in the future. Without getting into spoilers of the game, you play as Arthur which is your starting character in the game. You are able to play as others as the game progresses, but there wasn't anything that wanted me to keep on playing. I stopped maybe 1/2 of the way. I was hoping that this would fill the Bioshock drought we have been going through, but this felt like just a 2 minute sprinkle of JOY to fill the srought, and then the sun came back into full swing again. We Happy Few, just doesn't feel like a finished or complete game at its current state. As much as I would like to recommend it, I just can't due to it's price, gameplay issues, and missions that are repetitive. It still feels like an early access game at times. I did do a review on the PS4 Pro on my channel if you guys want to get a better understanding on which platform to get this on, but if your still wanting the game and think you will like it, I recommend in a heartbeat to go on PC. It runs smoother, it doesn't nearly take as long to load as it does on the PS4 Pro. It took at least 5 minutes to get thru a loading screen, where as pc just loaded quick and your in the game. You also get to play a bit on Steam and if you hate it, you can always refund it, unlike the Playstation. So if I where you, and you like the Bioshock universe in an England setting, try it out on steam, not a system. See if you like it, and if not, refund it. DO NOT GET IT AT ITS FULL PRICE. Expand

Others are clearly just copy and paste, where the unconscious are exactly the same as dead (you can loot their body parts).

To make it even worse, Gearbox (most likely) has been covering up negative reviews, not Compulsion as some have suggested. They pulled the score from Metacritic, and activated the Steam anti-review bombing system, which shows they knew what was coming. Of course this shows that Steam is using a tool, not a thinking person, as it wiped all the negative reviews without considering if they were actually trolling or logical, well written reviews with facts that can be refuted. Steam left the vapid, shill-like "great!", or "I really like the game. Only trolls do not." kinds of comments, and it will be interesting to see if they implement a shill removal tool as well.

So after a sizable backlash against pulling this from Metacritic, Gearbox (again, probably) reinstated it. After all, Twitch was showing how glaringly mediocre, when not downright buggy, We Happy Few is. So I suggest waiting a year, possibly two, until this is actually done. Until then, this is a $20 purchase at best.

Most situations can be dealt with by literally just running away from the thing. Who thought that would be a good idea? I really wanted to like We Happy Few but it's... not great. Story is very interesting, but the finicky gameplay and unexciting procedurally generated sections are not fun. I'm giving up on it after a few attempts to get into it.

I definitely would have much more patience for it, if it wasn't a full priced. After the first 20 mins it feels very budget.

    Lovely Day for it
When we happy few was first shown off, it was basically being sold as a survival based game set in a creepy procedurally generated word. But since then this game has drastically changed
The world is still procedurally generated, but the game is completely with a fully fleshed out 23 hour long campaign and plenty of side quests to extend this time..
Throughotu this campaign youll be playing as 3 characters all seeking to escape in an alternate reality post world war 2 world during the mid 1960s, first is Arthur, hesa very balanced character.. his 12 hour or so long campaign is probably the most enjoyable, but youre in a eutopian world where you go off your joy.. a drug that takes away all emotion other than happiness, when you go off you begin to remember.. your past.. your brother.. its then you realize you need to escape… so youre off on a ourney to do just that.. the thing is.. being off your joy makes you suspicious, so oyull have to fake your way through town and occasionnaly pop a joy to get through downer detectors…
This world feels very much like a bioshock meets dishonoredworld.. you feel as though you have just as much freedom…
At first we happy few is at a near masterpiece level
The world is so creepy and intriguing to explore… within the first couple of horus I found myself in an abandond home with creepy music box music playing, and epty crib.. toys on the bed, I found a home where a couple hung themselves together… a table set up for tea alice in wonderland style
I was absolutely enthralled and intruged.. disturbed and curious…
Sadly though this attention to detail and world building quickly completely evaporates…
going through these abandoned world is so earie at first, there would be moments I would stop and have to tell somebody about it or share a picture.. but by time you get to the first town… this is completely gone… the game turns into busy work fetch questing…
The experience you have in the world of We Happy Few depends on your difficutly.. there is an option to customize your difficulty, I hose to kep survival and combat on easy, but I kept suspicion on normal.. I wanted to be immersed and get the intended experience of the world without having to worry about eating or sleeping.. but having to fit in to stop suspicion is where things can get super annoying.. plenty of chases through the streets and hiding on benches and in trashcans..
There is a skill tree though to unlock perks and make towns a little less frustrating.. these are rewarded to you by completing story quests as well as sidequests.. and you can build up to the townpeople just accepting youre someone that runs around without them wanting to fight you because of it..
But Arthurs act is the most complete feeling… there a lot of missions here where youll be in buildings, sneaking around.. taking out enemies, gathering materials, getting costumes to blend in.. its all a nice ballanece before youre challenged with the final 2 acts of the game…
First up is Sally.. her story is around 6 to 8 hours and runs parallel to arthurs story, so you will meet eachother with a different perspective from both ends…
Here theres an added challenge of taking care of a child, as youre completing tasks you will have to come back home, feed the baby and hold it or every hour a found of weight is added to your carring copacisty making it difficult for you to carry items and weapons… this is een more challenging because sallys act is very heavy on crafting… all three characters can craft… but the focus is really here for this story.. so many cool moments in her story though, so it was worth getting through even though it was infuriating.. .she cant fight with anything other than super light weapons but has the most hostile enemies out of all three stories, the havng to take care of a baby thing is annoying too when trying to gather crafting components, and finally in ollies chapter you have an insane weapon that does the highestdamage possible… this is a 3 -4 hour long father daughter story and is the sweetest and funniest story of the 3 and concludes the entire story of we happy few, no sequel bating.. this game has an end…
his added challenge though is you have to manage your blood sugar level… food and honey super important here.. its quite challenging at first balancing the too as running around with low blood sugar cuts your health in half…
But all 3 have a different skill tree…
Ollie also isn’t able to blend in and be accepted like Arthur and sally…. So its basically impossible to sell items at shops… you literally cant walk through a town without dozens of enemies constanly wanting to fight you.. its super frustrating but again super worth it for the story..
Which is what sumerizes we happy few perfectly.. worth it for the story…

Extremely unique, moves at a great pace, and NO IT IS NOT PRICED LIKE A TRIPLE A GAME. It's actually $30-40 less than an AAA game, so people complaining for the price point is seriously ridiculous.
Extremely vibrant, lots to do, and the world-building is amazing. For a game that costs almost half of what big titles do, you're getting a LOT for what you paid for.
    Must-have for Dystopian lovers.

Genial.

I like that We Happy Few, doesn't care whether or not I choose to walk aimlessly in its open world crafting healing balms or grenades, lockpicks, fancy electrified weapons, distraction devices, before walking into a nest of homicidal scientists.

When exploring in We Happy Few it's designed to reveal secrets that are both fun and rewarding. Although survival and crafting are fairly manageable, running through randomly generated towns, streets, or abandoned fields unfortunately shows that We Happy Few can’t hide from the ghosts of its own past as you'll learn when you play though the game.

This game is well worth your time and I recommend it but wait for a Steam sale..

The game is [UNIQUE, Atmospheric, Surrounding, Artistic, and have a good OST]

    => REVIEW:
This game causes you a mixture of feelings, and it has a happy and sad atmosphere at the same time, the setting, the people, the plot in general, the missions, the world moved by joy, everything is so unique and special that it manages to involve you in a way that many games try but fail.

Although the game is extremely unique, it cannot be considered a masterpiece because it has many defects, among them we can quote the *stealth mechanics that fail* at different times, making you appeal for aggressiveness, the *AI of the NPCs* that it's very weak, sometimes the guards don't see you, even if you pass in front of them, the infected give up on chasing you after you run 3 seconds, or even people who notice your presence even with you in stealth mode, besides all this, the world has *large and empty areas*, usually of fields, that only make you have to walk more, and in the case of
around cities, they don't make sense, besides all this, the game has *bugs*, they can happen to you or not [in my if I only had 1 bug where I crashed on the ground], other than that, there are *some massive and boring side missions*, and that really test the player's patience, like "spy on the conversation, and come back tomorrow (10x)". The game leaves the choice of the player focus on the main plot, or do side missions too, but in the first option the player will have a lot of difficulties, because through missions you get skill points to improve your character’s skills, that is, the game gives you sense of freedom, but *if you don't want to have a tortuous path, you need to spend more time on side missions*.

Another defect that everyone who played the game felt, is the *extremely long acts*. The base game has 3 acts, each for one character, and most of the people who play him stop playing when [Arthur’s] first act ends, which happened in my case. Because of the game mixing survival, with primary missions, and *indirectly mandatory secondary missions*, the acts end up taking too long. The average time is *7 hours per act if you focus on the main missions*, however, this will increase frighteningly difficult to finish.*If you do the side missions*, the path becomes easier, but much more long, rising from *12 to 14 hours per act*, so when you finish the first act after several hours, you literally think that the game is over, and you are satisfied with your trajectory, but then you realize that you only played 1/3 of the game.

Because the acts are independent of each other, portraying the story of each character separately, completing each would be the equivalent to end 3 different games, but it is still the same game, the same world, the same mechanics, differentiating only in gameplay characteristics of the character, in plot, and in missions, that is, it is not enough in most cases to interest you the player to continue the game.

You will finish the first act and be satisfied with the game, only very dedicated people will finish everything. Platinize the game is also something bordering on the impossible of the player's sanity, because for that it is necessary to get all the masks of memories lost by the world, and some are difficult to obtain, having access only at specific moments of each act, other than that it is necessary to have patience and dedication to complete the 3 very long acts.)

    => VERDICT:
The Verdict is that the game itself is incredibly unique and atmospheric, and even with all the problems it has, it is very worthwhile play, you finish the first act, and you will not regret doing it, because you will spend good hours to complete it by all. From then on, it is up to the player if he wants to complete the other 2 acts, which depends on how much you will like the game and the connection you will develop with him. The problems in general do not harm your experience with the game, it is worth investing a few hours in Arthur, and get him out of this crazy country addicted to Joy.

I did enjoy this game and find it very unique with a fantastic story. I also found it so hard to play sometimes, struggling to find the resources I needed as everything is so rare that I had no urge to play more than the main story. Also one big bug hindered me from moving along in the story and it cost me quite some nerves and time to find a way around it.

Retrofuturistic, totalitarian world created by Compulsion Games is fascinating, as we see bits and pieces of Kafka (a clerk rebelling against the system), Clockwork Orange (extreme violence), Douglas Adams (humor) or Half-Life (architecture) floating around. What failed is the execution, which turned We Happy Few into an unintentional parody of stealth games. The enemy AI is so lame that I repeatedly had an impression of starring in a lost episode of The Benny Hill Show, especially since the combat system is crude and production values leave a lot to be desired. The concept of We Happy Few has so much potential, but it feels like there were two teams with different level of talent working on this project. One team used this elaborate alternative world, stark visual style and and intriguing story, tried to lift it up. The other team was responsible for imbalanced, clumsy gameplay, pulled the game down. The result is 30 hours of very mixed feelings.
