But i never saw that trailer, so for me there was nothing missing and it looked very good, still does in 2020. It's time to fix this user score on this site as well, it's already fixed on steam. It's one of most underrated good games ever made. But it would be just nice, if this user score would look good or at least decent on this site as well, because this 4.9/10 is just ugly and doesn't present what this game actually is, at all. Most of these comments here are from 2014 and doesn't reflect what this game actually is. It's clear that this game will be looked back in 50 years as something ambitious and in many levels it actually succeeded. Many people complained that it didn't look as good as E3 trailer and half the hate came from there, but nobody never mentions that it still looks really good for early 2014 game, specially at night time. I played it 2 hours ago and even in 2020 it looks very decent. Huge respect goes from me to everyone who worked on this game and i understand you didn't have maybe biggest budget and what not, but what you did is still great job. It was also first open-world modern city game for Ubisoft, so imo it's kinda unfair to even compare it to GTA series, because Rockstar had been on roll since 2001. I'm hardcore GTA fan, but i almost equally like Watch_Dogs (2014). Of course GTA 5 is bigger, has more content and what not, but Watch_Dogs has always been hacker game first and that's how this game stands out from other GTA clones, in fact Watch_Dogs is not GTA clone, thanks to this hacking theme, it manages to be completely it's own thing. This game got trashed on its launch for a number of reasons. One of which was the 'downgraded visuals' from its e3 reveal in 2012. However, despair not because a plucky script kiddie 'The Worse' managed to tap into software graphical effects that were disabled by ubisoft at the last minute and re-enable them. So this is a must if you own the game look for the wose mod and install that.

The story in watchdogs has excellent writing and I found the world very engaging with unique in world npc animations that warrant just taking a moment to enjoyy (street performers, work colleagues on a drunken night out etc) just little moments that make the city feel alive. Some great interior environments to explore all culminate to make you feel like the ultimate hi-tech 'fixer'. I kind of felt as if I was playing the ultimate splinter cell conviction idea of an ex cia operative working through a case. Highly entertaining stuff!

The music tracks while excellent, repeat often so I found myself turning them off and supplying my own soundtrack (thanks good old media player). Alot of criticism was aimed at the hacking here which conversely I found to be intuitive and thoughtful especially following the lines of connection through a building - I mean its far frp, realistic but im holding a controller so not expecting more than that.

Overall then an underrated experience that warrants a look in. Worse mode all the way!!!!

    Pros:
Decent story with some good, memorable characters.
Great and beautifully looking environment physics.
Good open world map, many side missions.
Lots of different gadgets and weapons - from pistols to granade launchers.
    Hacking's really fun in game.
Stealth method during missions is super fun and exciting.

    Cons:

For a 2014 game graphics looks terrible, especially foliage.
Dumb AI sometimes makes you feel frustrated.
Still quite a lot of small bugs even after all the updates.
Terrible vehicle handling. It's almost impossible to drive without wrecking something in the way.

I don't think this game is worth 30/50 euros (depending on edition) but I would definitely recommend getting it on sale. There's a lot of ways to complete your missions, you can either go head-on or do it the stealthy way and all of the gadgets makes it even more fun.

The hacking could and should be more fleshed out especially as its a game about hacking but it shouldn't be brushed off completely as it does have lots of hacks to unlock, lots of things to manipulate such as bridges and trains and can provide interesting stealth and combat situations you wont get in any other game.
The story though, that's what i find amazing. Aiden isn't the best character and does have a kinda generic goal of revenge but the side characters, execution, the philosophical questions it explores, side plots and ways Aiden gets to his goal are really really good and some of the best i personally have seen. Even with criticisms of Aiden, i still think he can be at times a very good protagonist. Side characters and villains like lucky Quinn, T-bone, Maurice, Clara, Damien are all really good characters and have a story to tell and a vivid personality.
I seriously can't explain how good the story in this game is (especially the climax), you just need to play though it yourself.
The bugs were inexcusable at launch but now i find there are very few bugs, none of which are game breaking just. i might be lucky but it's now solid and stable.
The online has some really interesting aspects but they aren't amazingly executed, the main online game mode is online invasions which involve randomly invading another players single player game and trying to steal their data which is fun when you want it but when you are busy and some player joins and you have to completely shift your focus; it gets very frustrating.
My second favourite part of this game second to the story is the atmosphere and world. The city is divided into clear areas with vivid personalities, stories and communities. The wards is my favourite but there is honestly a huge amount of detail in the separate areas and its paid off as the areas seep with environment and make a great city to explore.
There's a lot more to this game but you've probably heard it before. I just wanted to shine a light on the stunningly amazing story which for me makes up for the not so amazing other aspects.
I honestly feel that for £4 in 2019, it is an amazing game and you will not regret buying it.
That's just my opinion though :)

Once you get past that, you'll find a very, very average sandbox game with the novelty mechanic of 'hacking'.

The main character is as bland as they come. He's the usual brooding, violent and morally empty anti-hero with the personality of a turnip that Ubisoft love creating. The hacking is laughable, simply press 'X' and you're a l33t h4ck3r. And don't get me started on the driving, it's like trying to control a watermelon while juggling fine china and having rats nibbling at your genitals while going at 100 km/h.
That and the stutter makes it impossible.

No. The game is a technical mess, the story and motivation of the main character are childish and considering it was released by Ubisoft, you know it will never get fixed.

Wow, Ubisoft... Really?! Make us wait so long for a game that doesn't work? WTF!
The game itself is mildly entertaining despite all the flaws, but seriously, why postpone the release if the finished product is a piece of sh!t? I hope there is a solution to the damn loading screen bug soon! I've made it to 88% and I really don't want to start over again.

This game runs PERFECTLY on my pc (660gtx ti, machine 1.5 yrs old), so this review isn't about technical (performance issues)! That doesn't mean the UI is good - far from it. Bad camera angles, responses, controls, atrocious driving. Worst of all, it's BORING. Terrible terrible writing and game design. It really makes me wonder how many game review sites get paid off by AAA companies.

WORST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED. not even close to real physics. I was on the top of a parking lot building, police came after me somehow, and watched the cop car teleport to the top of the building. this is ridiculous. if you had the option to buy this game or GTA 5 get GTA 5, even if you already have it, buy it again. this game is just terrible and will not buying games from this company again.

I found the game to be a general letdown. The story was refreshing, although dry and hard to follow. The biggest flaws aside from graphics is the Mission Design and the Game Controls. The 3rd person game-play barely functions, and vehicles feel like bumper cars on ice. I purchased the game and would like to finish it but am finding the game generally unplayable.

As others have mentioned, theres nothing to do in the city and I would much rather have the city size cut by half and make the remaining half come to life. - AMD performance is very bad but even on Nvidia, expect to have hiccups.
    - Frame rate is all over the place, when it goes over 60 you have bad tearing so you need V-sync. But then you go for a drive and suddenly you only get 20 FPS. If V-sync is activated you need to hold at least 60FPS otherwise hiccups will occur (this is not related to Watch Dogs but is negative point about V-sync)

    - Graphics are "ok" but nothing mind blowing, people who say that aren't used much
    - It's a port and like most ports it says f*** pc, if you still want to get it, don't go for the PC version. Expect clunky controls and shooting in this games is the worst I have ever experienced. Machine guns are horrible, a pistol works better and are far more effective.

Now let's say you buy this for console, no performance problems and no crappy port issues, should I buy it? simply said, no, don't

    - missions are boring, don't expect to much of it.
    - car handling is bad, very bad. No idea why some people would say its ok. It's total completely utterly garbage.
    - side missions are fun, for 30 minutes. It's always the same, you pick up a conversation, go to location X, shoot the bad guy. Or steal some money by tapping a, go to the atm and get your cash
    - if you die, the game "refreshes", you are still in the same place with anything you got before you got killed you still got. Forget running away, just get your self killed and the chase is over. You even get rewarded, all you're ammo is back up 100%
    - the hacking is fun, the first 30 minutes. Just tap A and you hack everything. You can't make a escape route by hacking the city and alternating traffic lights. Instead when you are at a intersection, just press a, lights will flicker and any npc at the intersection will crash.
    - the game demands that you use your magic A button hacking skills. You have no other option in a chase, cops will keep chasing you and losing them is no option. Doesn't matter what car you take. If you need to kill for example a prisoner that is being transported you can use magic a button skills or you ram it until it catches fires and explodes.

So you start to ignore the basic repetitive a button hacking skills, uninteresting story line and those never ending same side missions. You have a whole city but there isn't anything else to do.

Just to set things straight, this is a over hyped game that got a crappy PC port. The graphics are ok but nothing near what they promised. And the worst of all, this game is boring. Their I said it.
Even more it's quite clear when you go trough the reviews there are a lot of fakes one.

You still want to buy this game? Well go ahead, you do with you're money what you want but you have been warned.

Now with watch Dogs. The highest the game will allow the card to run is medium textures. This makes the game look like Gta vice city on my Galaxy Note phone. This is a horribly bad running game. Then after playing about 10 minutes. It starts freezing every 5 seconds. This causes frame rates to drop to 10 or so requiring me to restart the game.

Far as the game play. I could not use a mouse and keyboard. It almost forces the use of a controller. The game play seems okay. I would have preferred a less arcade driving system but I guess they wanted cars to feel like that so okay then. The gunplay seems good. I like the way they control. Good aiming and recoil feel for a 3rd person game. The little I played seemed okay. I am guessing it is nowhere close to the scope, quality and feel of GTA 5 but I guess this is the closest we have. This score is solely based on the horrible visual quality and stutter problems the game has.

Crossfire is not supported, and from what I've read, AMD cards just gets screwed for even trying to run the game. Even on lowest settings, the game stutters horribly. NPC conversations are repetitive. You can walk down the street and hear the same repetitive conversations, the cars don't take any sort of crumple damage, you know, something that GTA 3 (you know, that game that came out over a decade ago?) could do.

There are a few cool parts, like the Spidertank, but even that gets bland quickly. Not worth the money, and I'm going to be asking for a refund.

I'd say Sleeping Dogs looks better at night (minus the shiny water puddles), Just Cause 2 looks better during the day. And these are ooooold games. If GTA V ever comes out on PC, with some added options and a proper AA filter, it will make this look like a joke. First CoD: Ghosts, now this. Is this what "next gen" is about? Games that look the same and run at half the framerate? Are any competent programmers even left in this industry?

Soundtrack: Too short and uninteresting. No variety. Music for people who don't really like music, they just have it playing like noise in the background.

Gameplay: Soul crushingly limited compared to what people expected and were led to believe. Profiling is random phrase generator placed on top of random face generator. Hacking is press Q when prompted and something cool happens. Driving is bad and hard to explain, cars slide at random times but still manage to feel like trucks somehow. No damage model. Shooting is generic 3rd person shooting, guns sound absolutely abysmal like peashooters, and all weapons that I've noticed 1 hit enemies on head which is really easy to do, so variety is pointless.

Story is uninteresting and the protagonist is supposedly driven by personal tragedy and trauma but doesn't really show it. Missions brought back nightmarish flashbacks of all the AC4 "FOLLOW" and "STAY CLOSE" missions that everyone hated, because they ARE basically the same missions. Stealth system is forced on you because of those terrible missions, no reason that I've noticed to not kill people at every opportunity. UI is broken, cursor disappears randomly at certain screens and moves at triple the speed at others.

I will stop here because I could write a book about this game. I just stop and think "Is there a single element of the game that was as good as I expected?", and the answer is no. Every single thing about it ranges from bad to meh. Huge disappointment.

-1...Gameplay-wise it controls sluggish as all hell...the first time you point a gun (in the "tutorial") it felt like having to move your arm with 10 bricks strapped to it (upping the mouse sensitivity only helps marginally) and that pretty much affects the driving-controls as well...only THEY are MUCH worse, you accelerate as if you're sitting in a rocket and afterwards it feels like driving on ice...in the end, it takes a bit to get used to (if you force yourself, you can get used to everything after all) but it just doesn't "feel good" (it's like you're constantly thinking: "okay, can this stop now?...please, let this stop")
All of this indicates that the controls are pretty much meant for controllers (which, again, is a horrible testament of inaptitude to make a proper pc-port) but even when playing with a controler, it has a very heavy, sluggish feel to it...it's just uncomfortable to play...

0...The Story is basically a typical run of the mill revenge-thriller story mixed with open-world gameplay...Assassins Creed had that already and it's really nothing excitingly new, even the side-missions feel very much like a "been there, done that" kinda deal and the whole hacking-shtick doesn't offer enough variety to to make it stand out of the utter mediocrity that is the main-game...it's not "bad" but also not particularly "good"

-3...and at the very end, probably the most offensive thing a game can do...it's plain boring...from the intro-sequence it pretty much goes downhill to an unnecessarily drawn out plot (all the things that are supposed to make us "feel" something for Aiden just didn't do anything but waste everyone's time...judging by his blank stare and monotone voice, even Aiden doesn't seem to give a sh*t) with a completely dull main-character and a city that does anyhing but "live and breathe" (it's pretty much a static chicago with a few people strewn about here and there, which you can sometimes hack and get some randomised unnecessary bit of useless information...or money) it's utterly boring and tedious to play

My advice? if you want a fun open-world game with lots of things to do and a somewhat passable story (let's be honest, in most cases the stories are rather similar anyways, but it's interesting, engaging characters that make a seemingly generic story "special") then go get the likes of Sleeping Dogs, GTA V or Saints Row 3...if you just want an open world to f*** around in, buy Just Cause 2 or Saints Row 4...but for a pricetag of 60-70 bucks and the massive overhype this game had before release, Watch Dogs seriously doesn't deliver and just feels like no one actually put any effort into making or giving this game something, anything special....overhyped mediocrity at its best...

When will big publishers learn, when the public drops 60$ for a AAA game it had better work on LAUNCH DAY! This whole "ship it now , patch it later" mentality is only acceptable because of morons who pre-order.

I hope this game really hurts Ubisoft. Publishers need to learn that devs run the release of a game, not the marketing department. They started marketing a year early and released it at least 6 months too early. this was a marketing department that **** this game up.

The terrible optimization coupled with layers of DRM to keep you from playing makes you question if playing the game is worth playing before you even start it up.

No matter where you buy Watch Dogs, you will have to install Uplay to continue. Don't like it? Too bad.
Since Uplay is a necessary component to play this game, it should be included in the review. And as a game service, it's pretty terrible. With little customization, and attempting to mimic the gimmicks of the Xbox interface, along with intruding, in-your-face ads. The servers are barely able to handle the amount of people they knew would be buying the game and going through Uplay. All this would have been avoided if Uplay wasn't required.

For Uplay, as a game service, I give a 0/10.

Now, for Watch Dogs. The game was made for consoles, and as such, optimized for them. It was also made for PC, but then not optimized at all. Anyone with AMD cards will have a hard time running the game with decent FPS, and Nvidia users aren't better off, still having problems with FPS with high end graphics cards. The bugs, glitches, and crashes are all very bad for game that was delayed months. The bugs aren't even minor, with some making it difficult to continue to downright making you have to stop playing.

For the game, from what I was able to experience, I give a 2/10.

Taking the scores of both, ends with still 0/10.

The game isn't in a stage that it should have been released at. This is comparable to the WarZ release and controversy. It's unplayable and hates you for wanting to play it. Ubisoft will seemingly never learn.

The first thing you need to know, that this game is not optimized for AMD cores because they were not invited into the development process and the game design will probably prevent any driver updates or patching to make it any better - google it. I couldn't play on my own PC and had to use my wifes since she has Nvidia on board. You have been warned!

And now to the game itself. 1.

And now to the game itself.

    1. Graphics is nowhere close to what we saw on trailers shown to us at gaming events around the world. Not only is it just medicore, but the game doesn't even try to hide that most of the stuff is just copy paste - watch some gameplay videos and focus on random NPC animations. Clone sense tingling!

    2. Main story is just boring and predictable.

    3. Side missions are just a laugh - after 5-10 of them you will most probably skip this aspect of the game.

    4. Earning money is a laugh.

    5. Game physics is a misunderstanding if you realize that we're in 2014, not in 2004. Cars drive like a brick falling of from a bridge, vehicle damage is almost irrelevant, everything seems to be glued to the ground...

    6. Multiplayer? Go play whatever you're playing online these days as the lags, loss of connection and downtimes will just piss you off.

Since it' s a Ubisoft game and they are well known for making promises that are never 100% fulfiled, I wasn't expecting all of the stuff that they were showing off. But the end product looks like an early alpha of what we were being shown so far. 3/10 from me, and that's only for the fact that the story has some nice support characters although even they are utilized in a predictable and unsatisfying way.

P.S. This game runs (as always) via Uplay so expect a bumpy road when trying to actually launch the product. Server downs, missing files, 3+ file repairs in a row, you name it. So that doesn't help the overall impression at all.

-All clothing stores are identical, all gun shops are identical.
-Little to no reason to explore the rich world.
-There really isn't any loot in the world at all, think gta 4 city but much less lifelike, it feels dead, and crafting components are so inexpensive it just kills exploration.
-Every single mission is the same. It either involves chasing someone by foot or by vehicle, or killing enemies that roam specific paths in a small area. The one-button hacking doesn't even add anything to the gameplay. If the hacking was removed it would essentially be the same game with little difference. You are not going on interesting missions like gta 4 where you would rob a bank or anything like that at all.

-Digital trips: It adds some interesting game modes that have absolutely nothing to do with regular gameplay but it almost feels like the developers were aware of how lifeless and boring the main gameplay was so they added these digital trip game modes like driving a tank-spider and blowing crap up, and it does add some variety but I just wish the variety was in the main gameplay itself and its not, at all.

Well you're not getting that. GTA 4 level graphics, and TES 4 Oblivion level NPCs. The city looks alive, but only as long as you don't exist in it. The moment you interact with anything, all the immersion vanishes.

Did you want inventive new multiplayer gameplay?
Wait in queue for matchmaking to be forced to attack a random opponent which will most likely win by committing suicide. The Mobile app that claims to be another dimension of gaming? Connection failed.
When the servers actually work, you'll still get that, this time because your opponent can simply quit the game to make you lose.

The only thing that has any potential are the digital trips. They should have just made those standalone for $5 each, it would be a better deal.

Also, don't forget about how Ubisoft screwed over a third of Europe by forcing them to play in russian. And the Day -1 Season Pass that costs 100% of the price of the game and contains nothing. They promise to add a lot of gameplay in future DLC, but hey, they also promised the game would be good.

The train physics of this game is incredible! When you approach the train from a medium range distance it will stop in an instant. Wow, this is innovation right there! This is the future for the game physics right there!

The physics of this game is what makes this game the best next-gen game out there, it completely demolishes other next-gen games. The game is flat in terms of physics but this is what makes this game superior to other similar type of games in it's genre. GTA games has better and more realistic features in terms of game physics but this game delivers the real next-gen evolution of flat physics which is what we have been waiting for all these years! Also I musn't forget to mention how inconsistent the car physics is compared to the flawless train physics.
The vehicle physics though is what makes this game unplayable and most of the crashes could have been much better made, even GTA IV which is a current gen game have much more realism to crashes than this game so this game made me disappointed and I cant tolerate those physics at all so I do not recommend this game. Horrible game physics 0/10 but if the game had been much more realistic in that aspect I would gladly recommend this game and even give it a perfect score but this was close to being the best and most realistic game that I never had played. Unfortunately this game did not live up to it's hype, (game development years 2009-2014).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So let me start with pointing out, that this was the game I was waiting to play for a very long time. I had my pre-order paid in early September. When the game came I out I was just.... disappointed. The game isn't bad, neither terrible, but it is just disappointing.

    STORY: 7/10
The story didn't fail to deliver some interesting stuff, yet some things happen just out of the blue, sometimes happening too fast, making not-so-much sense at all. We also do not get some crucial dialagoues that would make the game more interesting and complete. The ending is, well, not really what i would like to see. It destroyed my only favourite character, Jordi. Iknow, Ubisoft tried to make him look like a gun for hire, that doesnt give a damn about anything except money. BUT, why would he warn us a few missions before that there is a big bounty on our head, and then go and do what he did in the end? Clara's story is OK. T-Bone, well I LOVE this guy, but unfortunatelly there wasn't much of him in the game, literally. We didnt get to know him. Aiden sometimes also takes some questionable choices, but well, you can live with that. Some stuff was also left off, like who Defalt was. They could most definitely develop that to make it more interesting.

    Graphics: 4/10
So yea. I bought a new PC for this game.FX-8350 CPU, 8 GBs RAM 1866Mhz HyperX, and Radeon HD 7790. Back in 2012 the graphics were astounding. Yet they took a huge downfall since then. They said it is because they want to make it playable on last gen consoles. Yea well, I can sort-of live with that, cuz I dont buy the games for their visuals. Unfortunately, They game on PC is TERRIBLY optimized. With my Specs I am BARELY able to play it on LOW, withe EVERYTHING ( anti-alias and so) turned OFF. The CPU avarages on 90-100% usage and the game stutters all the time. Sometimes it gets random freezes, especially during cutscenes. It is nearly unplayable, the game looks like it works on about 10-20 FPS. It really takes away from the overall experience and enjoyement. Compare this to FarCry3 which runs on ultra on 30-40FPS

    PHISICS + GAMEPLAY 6/10
Phiscs are just no. NO. There are no phisics, the cars bounce off each other like rubber, you can basically run through everyrything. When you ride a bike up on a staircase you skyrock into the air.
Gamplay is ok. But there are not many weapons, most of which are unlocked in the beginning. You can basically solve any problem with a grenade launcher. Jordi does close to nothing when he's on his sniper rifle. There are some enjoyable puzzles, but taking ctOS towers has basically no point. You do not get any profits from it.

    Soundtrack 8/10
The sounds are really good, encounting ambiance sounds and in game songs and music. Some times the voices go missing tho or are too silent to hear. Subtitles don't match the voices sometimes as well.

Unfortunatelly Watch_Dogs is just a poor port from PS4 version. Smartphone menu is frustrating in its usage, as well as weapon choice wheel.
    Overall 4/10
Watch_Dogs is not a BAD game. It is an mediocre OK game. It is terribly disappointing and this make me sad. I was just hoping for more. I was promised more.

Frames would go single digits when you drive too fast, stutters, graphical glitches, everything didn't seem fluid, I can go on. It is the most horrible port you can bring, I don't think ubisoft knows the word optimzation and many of the problems can be found first hand testing as the vast majority are getting them. Really, Ubisoft simply just ported the PS4 version and pushed to PC in a day, that is the only logical explanation.

With the gaming using Gameworks of nvidia, which uses horrific practices of reducing performance or further improvements from competitors of nvidia, is a further slap in the face for non nvidia gpu owners.

Ubisoft's flagship title has a really, really repulsive protagonist. The entire storyline feels like it was cranked out of a automated story generator. On the positive side, Watch Dogs looks really good on PC, especially after modding the graphics to match the visual splendor of the early E3 demos. [Aug 2014]

There are some strong gameplay elements in Watch Dogs, but overall it's merely an adequate open world game. [July 2014, p.46]

Nothing could have realistically lived up to the immense level of hype that Ubisoft stirred up for this game, and while I value strong narratives and envelope-pushing technological advancements, I place just as much importance in the ability to enjoy the gameplay that's being offered to me. Watch Dogs is one of the more exciting sandbox games of the last few years, and if this is to become Ubisoft's next big franchise, I'm excited to see where they take it.
