I'm very disappointed. The side-by-side graphical comparison with what was shown at E3 2012 are ridiculous- it appears that Ubisoft was faking the footage as the real game doesn't look nearly that good. The campaign is boring. The online features are a joke- hacking invasions sound like an awesome idea but in reality they're not fun at all. It was inevitable that this game would be compared to GTA.

While the game presents many possibilities and an open world, it fails enormously at letting the player experiment with them. You are guided through every step of the way, never having room for the imagination. Adding to that is the "meh" music selection. But as we all know, driving is half of what makes a sandbox game fun.

While the game presents many possibilities and an open world, it fails enormously at letting the player experiment with them. You are guided through every step of the way, never having room for the imagination. Adding to that is the "meh" music selection.

But as we all know, driving is half of what makes a sandbox game fun. This is where Watch Dogs hits the ground and smashes its face hard.

While driving, you will be frustrated to the point that you will prefer walking or even turning the game off. Every mission that has driving as a major component will be an excruciating experience that will leave your fingers hovering over "Alt+F4". Thankfully, a lot of these missions aren't compulsory, so you can avoid them.

GTA IV should be taken as the standard for a driving mechanic with games such as this. It simulated realistic handling and car physics, which might have made it a little challenging for someone inexperienced with racing games or actual driving, but after a while anyone with half a brain mastered it and enjoyed driving even after the game's conclusion.
In Watch Dogs, you will spend the whole game trying to keep the driving time to the absolute minimum so as to avoid tossing the DVD out of the window.

I applaud anyone who can go from A to B in Watch Dogs without either
    - smashing their face into the keyboard
    - bouncing around like a rubber ball
    - crashing into pedestrians (which is especially annoying as it lowers your reputation which leads to constantly getting chased by the police and killing more pedestrians in the process)
    - crashing into a car or thirty (not really a problem as cars in Watch Dogs are made of kryptonite)
    - spinning the car out as you try to take off
    - choking on the Watch Dogs DVD

Riding a motorcycle is especially amusing as they seem to superglue Aiden's butt to the seat every time he gets on one.

All in all, the driving mechanic completely destroys this otherwise alright game. As I've said before, driving is half the game and receives a 0/5 from me, the rest of it I'd give a 3/5 based on the predictable story and oppressive and unimaginative but otherwise OK gameplay.

Lets talk about the game. Is it next-gen? Nope not even close. This game has so many glaring bugs and inconsistency's I dont even know where to begin.

Bad AI. AI goes full retard when you hack traffic lights its the worst thing I ever seen.
Bad Physic's No ragdoll, barely any visible dmg to cars or things around you.
Lighting is terrible. Gta5 had better lighting.
Hacking not as cool as you would of hoped. Pretty much go here press a button good job you hacked!
Horrendous PC controls. Worst mouse acceleration in history.

The list of minor bugs is too long to list it would take me a hour. Everything from fallng through the world to **** just plain not working or glitching out.

On top of everything the game runs like absolute **** and it doesn't make any sense. The games graphics are lackluster at best. So for this game to run so **** bad is mind boggling. Even when you get the game to a manageable frame rate the FPS drops are so insane that it ruins your gameplay.

Run from this title. Run far

Buy the game for what it ''might be''
Ubisoft have lied to his consumers once again. Created a massive hype for a game that is....ok at best. Gets repetitive after 4 hours. Full of PC bugs and slow downs. Don't believe the 8 and the 9's there is a reason why user score are 4.4/10 overall.

Well.... Game is a huge lie. AI is stupid, driving cars makes you angry, reflections on windows are not real, car's lights don't give any shadows, cars can't damage walls, car's damage makes no sense, static shadows, boring multiplayer, city doesn't live, it's just scripted and many many many more....

Unfortunately I've bought this "concoction" via steam. Everything I like in GTA I've missed in Watch Dogs. I was tourist trapped by the E3 trailers. I cannot express how emotionally disappointing the 'watch dogs experience' is for me. Just take a boat and try to drive to the open sea and within minutes bump against an invisible wall. Welcome to "The Trueman Show, 2014".

This so-called open world is a cage. Why is this hobo protagonist wearing this unbearable ugly coat? Driving is a nuisance, FPS an ordeal, hacking a bad joke, the omnipresent flooding notifications distracting, the missions I've passed boring, storyline predictable, gaming freedom not existing. This "game" will be buried in my steam library.
It will be my last time buying a game at release - hopefully.
GTA SA is still unbeaten - even compared to GTA V - and will be my all-time favourite.
Eventually the watch dogs are the naive customers of Ubisoft. Is this the profound message of this game?

How to make an awful game:
    -Add bad DRM (UPlay)
-Don't optimize it at all (I can't even play this game properly)
    -Bad voice acting
    -Awful AI
-Trains can stop on a dime
-Make the key gimmick to the came completely unnecessary (I could do all of the missions more successfully by not hacking)
    -Physics? What are physics?

I am extremely disappointed with this game. After all the hype, it turned out to be a horrible version of Splinter Cell. For starters...you play a dickhead. Not a cool, likeable guy. But a thief who hacks innocent people's bank accounts and steals their money. I know it's a game, but that a pretty crappy message to be sending to younger players. You will get stuck in side missions that you cannot find any way to drop. Once you pick it up and fail at it 15 times the only way to get around this is to start a new game. Then you will never play a side mission again for fear that you will be stuck in that side mission and never ever complete the game.

The game will force you to play in ways you just don't want to play. You will spend hours on just trying to get one action done. You will even go to YouTube and watch people fail over and over on the same mission you're on and commenting how frustrating it is or how they'll have to do a lot of editing to take out the 2 hours of attempts to do this one action that is blocking them from enjoying the rest of the game.

I've never uninstalled a game so quickly as this one. I honestly feel ripped off.

I am not kidding, you get glare from the sun while INSIDE a building. I have seen Indy games that released five years ago with better lighting and reflection than this game.

The physics engine in this game is a joke, cars are about as indestructible as Superman's pecs, and driving any vehicle will allow you to utterly destroy a wooden telephone pole at 1mph. I am not kidding. Anybody who worked on this game and isn't ashamed is either brain-dead or corrupt. More time and money when into making the E3 trailer two years ago than actually developing the game since then. I am ashamed that I even had to watch a friend play this game. The only reason I give this game a 1 is because if you can possibly get past the glaringly obvious issues, the broken physics, and the blindingly terrible graphics, it actually functions like a game.

Also, the driving mechanic is a huge train wreck that I'd rather walk or run most of the time. The acceleration and turning performance is super sensitive that it's so hard to drive straight. And the cover system, I love that I could stick myself to any piece of cover I could find and then switch cover quite easily. But press C to enter cover and press V to leave cover?? What the hell is that? Ubisoft has released many games utilizing cover mechanic, and some worked really nicely and here I thought they would have taken adventage of that, but no. And the main event - hacking is needless to say, disappointing. All you have to do is press and hold one single button on your keyboard and "boom!", whatever you were aiming to hack is taken care of. No deep hacking mechanic whatsoever although it was the one thing Ubisoft has been talking about a whole lot. And performance is also a pain in the ass. When I first played this game, it reminded me of Total War Rome II on its release. It's just so bad...all around. Expand

    Pros:
    - The world is generally very detailed, which is great for a feeling of immersion.
    - The Skill tree does open up a number of new options for your approach.
    - There is a good amount of variety in the missions available to play, but mimics Saints or GTA.
    - There is a distinct lack of obnoxious mini-games, which for a hacking eccentric game, is nice.

    Cons:
    - Within the first 20 minutes, you will notice the driving is absolutely god-awful, it gets a little better, but every car feels like driving a tug-boat on wheels with balded tires and an super sensitive gas pedal.
    - The skill tree is pretty disappointing, it opens up new options, but nothing is going to make you go "Ohh! that is so cool!" Its more like, "whoooh I can open gates now..."
    - The side missions, are either super freaking easy, or uncontrollably hard and obnoxious, but not the challenging hard you would get from playing dark souls, no its the challenge you get by having dial-up when playing BF4.
    - The hacking is all press and hold, which is a little too simplistic, and excessively boring, there is no simulated or other 'hacking' in the game. Just a simple mini-game to build a hacking program or hack complex devices would of been nice.

    And the controversial one.
    - Its not optimized for **** My friends who have Nvidia cards are able to run the game fine, assuming 2G of Vram and 8G+ of ram. However, having an AMD card, I can't run the game past low, even though I can run all of the other recent games at high or very high... This would be due to Nividias 'Gameworks' Libraries. Personally, if Ubisoft chooses to use this library which employs some nasty tricks I will not be buying those games, even if I end up having an Nividia card. I would like to support a competitive market.

AI is just plainly and simply completely down syndrome ridden, even on hard, and the NSA-esque digital prying becomes irking and never gets any funnier than stupid allusions to NPCs' sexual preferences. The only mildly entertaining character here was the azn with the funny hair, and even he wears thin quickly. Textures pop in and out constantly, yet this is merely a tidbit of what I've been hearing about the more common technical difficulties my brethren have been experiencing (RANDOM CRASHING; need I say more?).

And the worst aspect of it all: even on Ultra with every setting cranked up to the max, the game looks NOTHING like the E3 2012 tech demo that we've been salivating over for 2 years. We were brokered a fairy tale by snake oil salesmen, yet again. When will we learn?

I hate this game. I'd love to rate it lower, but technically speaking, it's quite impressive.

    Pros

    • It's pretty looking
    • It's quick to load
    • The story is pretty good... thought admittedly, inconsistent.

    Cons

    • Randomly generated elements - This I only noticed when I died. So here's the breakdown. I get on a motorbike, ride over to a building, look around for a camera and start the hacking process. I eventually scan the entire mission area, picking up all of the enemies on my HUD. The man at the gate has explosives on him, so I hack that, he blows up, I move onto the next one. At some point, I am spotted, I get shot, and I die.

So I reload. Suddenly, I'm in a completely different place. I turn around, and I'm stood next to a van. What happened to my bike?!?! Ok, so I hack into the camera, and... darn... I need to scout the area again, as they've all come off of my HUD. Doing this twice gets boring... let alone if you die a lot. So I have everyone in my HUD, hack into the guy by the gate again without paying much attention, only to find out that he no longer carries grenades, but is now distracted by a text message. So yeah, the game randomly chooses these characters. This means that you can't learn by your mistakes, and each mission isn't unique. You're just fighting a random array each time.

I should point out that this also is the same for some boss fights. The boss will suddenly spawn behind you and kill you, so you reload and take cover somewhere else. Finally, after the boss has finished saying his long LONG monologue for the 5th time, he spawns in again, somewhere random, and all your planning is to waste. Rinse and repeat. DULL!!!

    • Controls - I'm using a gamepad on my PC, so this might be different for others. For me, run is Right Trigger. The thing is, shoot is also right trigger... this starts getting confusing. Also, your character cannot jump on command. He can climb over small obstacles, but that's about it. If you press A, your character will take cover by a wall. Now, this may be my fault, but I'm used to using A to run. So when I'm attacked, I instinctively press A, and my character sticks to a wall, gets shot, dies... and see the point above for what happens next.

    • Next Gen - This is NOT a next gen game. Nothing new is here. It looks worse than GTA5, in my opinion (which I also didn't care much for, I should add). I'm playing on Ultra settings on my PC, and I'm underwhelmed. When cars smash into things, whether they deform appears to be entirely random. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. You can't buy cars, as far as I can tell.

I just feel as though this game is a poor man's GTA.

I've just had to shelve it for a while, because I'm fed up with it. My current mission is to chase down a van... however, when I start the mission, it spawns in a random location. I should point out that this is a main campaign mission. I'm confused, because having a randomizing mission is more difficult to program than a pre-set mission. I can't see why on Earth they would do this intentionally. It means that I can't learn from my mistakes, and I can't plan a strategy. I just have to hope for the best each time.

I've put quite a few hours into this... but I'm not going to waste my time for much longer. I only wish I bought it on a console rather than digitally, as I can't sell it anymore... and oh, how I wish to be rid of it!

-Story is ok, although a bit hard to get into.

    Cons:
-Performance wise this is the worst I have seen in years (a patch is incoming so this might be addressed)
-Boring side missions, ''shoot this'', ''identify that'', ''catch that car''. Not. Fun. At. All.
-Way, way worse graphics than what we originally saw at E3
-Only a few types of enemies, doesn't help that they are extremely easy to deal with.
-Lack of customization in every aspect.
-Skills you can unlock are extremely limited in scope and rarely does anything epic.
    Summary:
The game seeks to be an original, hacking game. This however failed miserably, the hacking is decent but far from what we expected, pressing a button and ♥♥♥♥ exploding everywhere is only enjoyable for a short time. Other than the hacking this game is pretty much a scaled down version of GTA, Mafia, Saints Row. No customization, few enjoyable weapons, boring vehicles, no interesting character interaction. Want realism, great action, a decent story? Play GTA (Once, if ever, it comes out on PC #RockstarHatesPCgamers. Want fun, a great story and loads of weapons, customization, funny dialogue etc... Play Saints Row. Want a great story, great atmosphere and extremely enjoyable albeit linear gameplay? Play Mafia 2!
This game is not recommended, waste of 70€, regretting the purchase more every second I think of it.

Performance has been very inconsistent for me so far. Memory leaks, maybe? Probably. Framerate drops from 80 to practically 0, especially during driving sequences. I've tried various graphics settings. It makes minimal to no **** difference. Meanwhile i can run and play graphical, sandbox behemoths like Planetside 2 and Just Cause 2 without any **** hiccups whatsoever. The latter, albeit an older game, looks vastly superior compared to this consolified piece of **** Even on Ultra settings, it's vastly inferior compared to older titles. Anyway. This ****'s unplayable for me in this state. As if the terrible draw distance and constant pop in wasn't annoying enough. The mouse acceleration is less noticeable in-game but it's a pain in the ass when it comes to navigating the games menus. Yes, there's mouse acceleration. That alone is sufficient proof that this is a ****ty port. The car handling is floaty and the controls feel unresponsive. There's quite a delay when making turns and the cars end up sliding all over the place. Can't hit **** without starting to spin out like a carousel. I expected better from Ubisoft Reflections in terms of vehicle handling. As far as i know, they've contributed to the development and worked on the game's car physics. I just hope that they put more care and effort into The Crew than they did into this. It reminds me of the awful car handling of All Points Bulletin. It's as if you are ridding on a sluggish, clunky block of ice regardless of the car's size or type you commandeer. It's just awful. And this is coming from a long time fan of the Driver games. Do i need to even rant about Uplay?

Good luck even launching the game if you're a ATI/AMD user! That's when happens you reward developers/publishers who are more concerned about the well being of their rich **** financiers than they're about the state of their games or their consumers.

    Downvote away, fanboys and astrosufers!

Very boring missions, terrible car handling and bad performance sums this game up.

When I played some of the missions I was like uh **** I don't want to do that let me do something fun. When driving the cars they handled horribly. The handling is comparable to that of saints row 3. When driving at high speeds my game would stutter and the game looks ugly as hell on max settings.

The hacking in this game is undercooked and oversimplified and the combat plays out like any other typical third person open world shooter. The story is decent and many of the characters have fleshed out dialogue and colorful personalities.

If there were no other problems with this game I would recommend it. Sure, the hacking mechanics that were supposed to set it apart from other GTA-esque games were rather lacking and some strange design features such as other players being able to intrude on your single player session were incorporated. But at the end of the day this is a solid game with a decent story and interesting characters. However the thing that makes me not reccommend this game are the frustrating and clunky controls, constant crashes, poor optimization for PC, and game breaking bugs that occur constantly.

As soon as I started playing it was evident how clunky the controls in this game felt. Mouse acceleration makes aiming difficult and slow. It is a constant fight with the game to make Aiden use the right object as cover. No, I do not want to crouch on the side of the vending machine as cover, I want to crouch behind it. The UI in this game was clearly designed for controllers, everything from the inventory wheel to Aiden's smartphone interface is very clunky to use with a mouse and keyboard. There is also a gamebreaking bug that when more than one directional key such as 'A' and 'W' are pressed when aiming at a target with your weapon, your character will not stop moving in that direction after you stop aiming which results in a retarded looking jog into walls and enemies resulting in a death. This bug occurs constantly in combat.

Watchdogs also suffers from extremely poor GPU optimization. My machine is getting old but with 2xHD6950's and an i5 2500k I expected at least smooth performance on medium-high. Instead on medium-high settings at 1080p resolution the game stutters along sub-30 fps in outside environments. When driving there are also extremely annoying instances where the fps will spike down to 10 or so every few seconds. In addition, Watchdogs randomly crashes to desktop every so often.

If it wasn't for these extremely frustrating control issues, optimzation issues, and random crashes I would have recommended Watchdogs, but because these exist: please please please do not buy this game until these issues are sorted out. It will only result in hours of frustration.

    Without bugs and Issues: 7/10
    Final Score: 3/10

I registered on metaritic just so I can state my frustration with this game. Ubisoft clearly does not care about its PC consumer base as this game is barely functional with very little thought put into the PC port. Also hacking is not very fun when it boils down to a point and click QTE. Characters were not interesting. Overall an over-hyped disappointing game.

Caveat: My PC runs Watch_Dogs without crashing, and it runs it at good graphics with a good frame-rate, so this is not a "technical review".

In other words, the low score is because the game brings nothing new to the table. Walk/run/drive around, shoot people, do random/disconnected side-missions, press a button whenever you're in the vicinity of a bridge, door, phone, grate, vent, sign

Walk/run/drive around, shoot people, do random/disconnected side-missions, press a button whenever you're in the vicinity of a bridge, door, phone, grate, vent, sign (etc) to "hack" it. Oh, and the vehicle physics is horrible and makes you feel like Bambi on ice.

It feels like someone tried to make a game, but couldn't quite decide if they wanted it to be GTA, Infamous or Assassins Creed. Then they realized they needed to make it unique, so they added "hacking". True, not all hacking is as simple as clicking a single button. For some of it you actually have to play a mini-game where you, by clicking a single button, rotate breaker switches to lead electricity from A to B.

Gimmicky, boring, and after haven given it three serious attempts (which have taken me about 5-6 hours into the game) I find absolutely nothing that makes me want to boot it up again.

I think the biggest disappointment is multiplayer (hacking and following). If you get some basic ideas how the game works there is no way for someone to successfully complete one of these successfully. Although the reward system is constructed the way you will always level up over time.

In my humble opinion you can get more fun out of £7 indie games than this so unless the price is dropped to around £20, don't buy it.

So what does this game DO others didn't? well it would be easier say what the other DID that this didn't.

Well, this is a new game so its obviously going to look better, but only by a few degrees, I would actually say Sleeping Dogs in some way looks better.

Things to do, well the main point of Watch Dogs is your phones ability to hack stuff.

Like phone junctions boxes outside peoples houses, for which you then can spy on them earning some XP while watching some cute cut scene, this was relatively amusing, but very basic. Some had a little puzzle to complete, similar to them pipe puzzle where you need to get water from one end to the other by moving the pipes, but this was electricity.

    you can also hack -

CCTV camera: This makes sense, these are used to move around inside buildings and getting up to higher places.

Traffic lights: This is somewhat amusing the first few times watching cars smash into each other- Dumb idiots. OK this makes sense, and its used to stop people chasing you, police and bad guys.

Bollards: Which comes up blocking roads, also to stop cars, this also made sense.

Drains:? or Gas Mains or 15 Pounds of C4 buried in the road? Not too sure about this one, its nice to trigger, but makes no sense seemed like a lacking in things to hack imo.

    Bridges, phuck it why not.

Forklifts & Cheery Pickers? what? just getting stupid now desperately adding things to hack, Oh and apparently you can only make them hackable to move up and down?

And some explosive floor bombs, wall circuit boxes and & other pointless stuff.

ALSO, you can hack the pointless & moronic citizens of Chicago, listen in to their text and phone conversions, which is amusing but after 200+ its gets pretty dull, furthermore you can steal their bank account details and take some of their saving, but after reaching about 300k you can pretty much buy everything that can be bought, so money is useless, this is just a gimmick and a game filler, I can see people doing this for ages like it did, then release it was all for nothing.

The Campaign or main story is OK nothing great, and the protagonist is a total arse. Most unlikable character in any genre, be it movie, books or games, his reasons & action are so poorly written, it feels so cobbled and rushed together.

Game play: Comparing this to the other open world GTA style games, this is by far the worst, the City is open straight away which leads little to no discovery, buildings and just closed lifeless boxes, apart from the odd news stand, café or bar where you can buy a drink/snacks that fills your bullet time thing, which I never used.

The main Campaign is 90% chase that guy or follow this guy, and escape the bad guys or police, these type of mission were the worst parts of the other games, I hated them and GTA only used them to add filler to the their games, and Sleeping Dogs never used them at all. But Watch Dogs is mainly these, and these are awful- Reason! the driving is nasty.
Well part from those terrible missions, the other few consist of get in/out without being seen, tad like Metal Gear solid style, they see you and bam, start again time, these mission were even worst then the driving ones, and finally a very basic but and probably the best part of the game, cover shooting which worked fine, but pretty easy if you took your time.

Side mission, were basic and dull, the gang hide out is basically a cover shooter, where you attack some goons then hit their boss with a stick, you kill him its start again time, but you can kill his goons np, this one one was ok the other 2 pretty Crappy..

NOW THE WORST PART OF THE GAME: Wow the driving, omg, For example the boats actually handle better than the cars, absolutely awful & just embarrassingly bad.

So Watch Dogs? An awful, cheap and hurried game, that actually takes the genre back to 2004. From the lies about the visuals in the 2012 E3 Trailer and the nasty PC optimization, and the fact that the last 2 bosses are basically QTE, or the fact that you character can't do anything in the city, apart from bump into the citizen steal pointless money, or play dull chess. or even the terribly coded Hulk mentality of the police-POLICE SMASH -. wow they literally have one line of code those guys.

But that fact they have Released DLC for $5 without fixing Uplay or stabilizing the game for people that have paid upwards of $70

Lazy works can be clearly observed in this game. There are great deviations in lighting from various environment, either too dark or bright. Vehicles or NPCs get jammed in street. Crazy physic like people or vehicle flying like a rocket when being hit, is also present in this game.

The game mechanic is also an epic failure. The character animations and control are apparently direct clones from AC4 and Splinter Cell Blacklist. The hacking and driving mechanics are both laughable, you can just play the game as a mediocre TPS without any compromise in mission objective, in the ways limited by the developer, e.g. can't shoot when driving vehicle.

I won't talk more about the technical issues of this game, as it is mentioned by other reviewers many times already.

Basically, PC players are doomed due to some "nice" works by their "beloved" developers.

A game of such low quality with intention to play trick on PC players, can even break the sales record of the developers. Do you think that it is ridiculous? This presents a serious problem in the game community. Buyers, please learn to read the reviews, don't believe the trailer blindly and just pre-order. And most importantly, do not forget what the unethical companies have done to you, and boycott them in future.

The game is okay, but the poor optimisation has ruined it for so many people. Running a GTX 780 the game barely keeps a stable frame rate on the lowest settings. There's also frame stutter at all times when driving and the game keeps crashing. In fact, I'm about 10 hours into the game and I can't continue the main storyline because it crashes every time. I'm thoroughly disappointed with Watch Dogs as it was looking to be one of the best games of the year. The game isn't even that exciting either. The story gets fairly boring, enemies are extremely weak, whilst the police are ridiculously hard to get away from. The whole idea of hacking everything around you isn't that much fun either. I'll be honest, I'm not even that annoyed that the game crashes so much that I can't play it any more. I'd probably stop playing it anyway, it doesn't excite me at all. I look forward to GTA V coming to PC, it will be much better than this for the genre. Expand

Oh look! Another GTA V clone! Watch Dogs, with all this hype, you gave this piece of garbage, what a waste of money. Do not buy this game, it is totally not worth your money.

Ubisoft's flagship title has a really, really repulsive protagonist. The entire storyline feels like it was cranked out of a automated story generator. On the positive side, Watch Dogs looks really good on PC, especially after modding the graphics to match the visual splendor of the early E3 demos. [Aug 2014]

There are some strong gameplay elements in Watch Dogs, but overall it's merely an adequate open world game. [July 2014, p.46]

Nothing could have realistically lived up to the immense level of hype that Ubisoft stirred up for this game, and while I value strong narratives and envelope-pushing technological advancements, I place just as much importance in the ability to enjoy the gameplay that's being offered to me. Watch Dogs is one of the more exciting sandbox games of the last few years, and if this is to become Ubisoft's next big franchise, I'm excited to see where they take it.
