    The Grind will kill you....

    Rewards are horrible (even with premium), getting to the very top vehicles can take over a year of you time and the game just isn't fun.

You're essentially forced to pay money to get an experience that is bearable and not be broke in game because you make a loss in in game currency every game without a premium account. I have 2700+ hours in the game and it's sad to see the state of this game, it has so much potential… Expand

    I reached leopard 2a4 without buying anything (with real money) in between 1000-1100 hours.Yea,economy system doesn't let you reach the top tier(modern tanks)easily.So dont be fooled by modern tanks in the photos,it wont be easy.Gaijin,pls fix.

    I'm willing to pay ~15 bucks for a good game, but to regularly pay 10 and on top of that 40 for a premium plane for progress to still be impossibly slow, then it's definitely not an enjoyable game

    As a community, we asked this developer politely for 10 years to make the game better. They won't listen. Save your mental health, save your money and your time and play something more worthwhile.
    - Tanks still use 3 circles/wheels on each side so tracks arent simulated

    - Gearbox loss is not simulated
    - Water stops everything in this game. Take a 500 ton train, make it go 1000 kmh, the moment it hits a puddle, it stops the train in half a second.
    - Grinding the smallest, neglected tree in this game, it took me 2.5 years to go from 1930's tanks to a 2016 tank. This was before the economy was extra destroyed.

    - Air battles went from 60 minutes to 25 minutes, destroying all profits and completely removing 1:1 maps from the matchmaking
    - Assists were made harder
    - 2x, 3x and 5x victory multipliers for the first win or match was removed
    - Air battles have "activity" (you get rewarded for not being afk in plane battles basically) it went from 20 minutes activity to 20 seconds, because you have to be 1m and actively shooting the enemy plane, so teamwork is nonexistent (like using yourself as a bait for a teammate plane to shoot the enemy plane) because you dont get rewarded at all.

    Theres so much more to talk about but I'd have to hire editors and publish a book on all the failures this game.    … Expand

Been playing the game for over 6 years and recently Gaijin hasn't been improving the game in terms of economy, quality of life, etc. I've personally gone to the forums and suggested great ideas that would improve gameplay a lot but my posts just get deleted. Gaijin has also stated that you need premiums to make money in game and that research-based vehicles should not be able to make profit. All Gaijin cares about is adding more vehicles and improving visual rather than adding more game modes, improving the interface to make things like repairing easier, or the economy. Sure these things don't really bring them in money but in the long run it will because with an improved game they'll be able to keep players into the game actually want to spend real money instead of twisting their arm with a **** economy that practically forces us to spend real money.… Expand

    Unfortunately, this "uniqueness" has left Gaijin with little real competition over the years. What started off as a "free to play" title has over time become less and less free. Gaijin keeps adding nations and vehicles, while at the same    War Thunder is a game like no other, with a comprehensive damage system, combined arms, and variety of beautifully modeled tanks, aircraft and ships.

    Unfortunately, this "uniqueness" has left Gaijin with little real competition over the years. What started off as a "free to play" title has over time become less and less free. Gaijin keeps adding nations and vehicles, while at the same time increasing repair costs and lowering player rewards. A premium account isn't enough to comfortably progress anymore, now you also have to buy premium vehicles in every nation.

    For the new players reading this, Gaijin has recently admitted that they balance free vehicles around a negative income. That means they WANT you to lose money by playing, so you'll be forced to buy microtransactions, for example overpowered premium vehicles.

    This isn't just greedy, it also destroys the matchmaker and the balance of the game. Since you only profit using premium vehicles they often end up being spammed. In battlerating 8.7, more than half the players on each team are in premium tanks. This results in rampant "one death leaving". These players only spawn their premium tank and leave when it's destroyed, leaving their team in a bad situation. Sometimes the premium is their only tank for the tier, othertimes it's because "free" tanks aren't worth the high cost to repair.

    Gaijin and their purposefully frustrating economy is ultimately to blame for this. There's so many other issues and scandals I could bring up, like how you can't repair or extinguish flames on your new tank before unlocking "parts" and "FPE". Gaijin wants you to pay gold to skip the grind for these essential tools.

    In it's current state, I wouldn't recommend this game to anybody. That might seem hypocritical considering my hours spent in this game, but believe me. It's new players who suffer the most. Gaijin doesn't care about me, you, or the playerbase. Don't make the same mistake as me. Find another game that values your input, and respects your time.    … Expand

    I am extremely disappointed with the direction the company has gone in regard to the management of its vehicle balancing and economy. you cannot play a single mid or high tier game without the majority of your team being made up of premium vehicles. beyond that, the progression is grueling and beyond stupid, and the fact that they want to make said grind even more grueling is just horrible.

Economy is absolutely mobile gaming tier trash. 1000s of hours of slow progression to even get the chance to stock grind modern aircraft. Balance is a joke, which fuels their model of making you pay for premium account, vehicles, and talismans to even have a chance at unlocking things in one lifetime.     As for the actual core gameplay, it is amazing, there is no other game that is quite like it, but the economy that Gajian has made for the game is absolutely unbearable and unacceptable.     It is literally over 1000 hours of grinding to finish a tech tree (air and ground). This is assuming also that you have a $60 premium tank and are paying for premium time. This game calling itself free to play is a lie. You will never get to the modern vehicles this game highlights in advertisements without paying, it would be like 5,000 hours of grinding.

Warning for new players, if you want to play top tier tanks and planes be ready for an overwhelmingly long and tiresome grind. Realistically to play top tier vehicles you HAVE TO buy a premium account and premium vehicles to keep a somewhat positive income

Whether it’s through cosmetics, lootboxes, premium currency, premium accounts, special items, boosters, or just the overall grind of them game, game companies have always found a way to generate income from free to play games. What methods does Gaijin use you may ask yourself? All of them. They use every single method in the book. Whether it be through skins on the marketplace, crates for cosmetics and vehicles, golden eagles (premium currency), premium account, premium vehicles, boosters, event items, and even the grind, all of it is monetized by Gaijin. This review isn’t here to tell a game company how they should or shouldn’t make their income, this review is here to tell them that their methods are going to kill either the game or their company.

    I have no qualms with heavily monetized games, the only thing that matters is if they are fun at the core. Well, is War Thunder fun at the core? Yes. I wholeheartedly believe this could be one of, if not the greatest games ever made. However, it is nearly impossible to see that shining core through the almost infinite list of mechanics implemented to prevent you from enjoying the game. The problem with Gaijin’s interpretation of the free to play model is that they believe the only way people will spend money is if they’re forced to spend it. This is extremely unhealthy for the player base, community, and game in general. What Gaijin fails to realize is that people will naturally spend money on things they enjoy. If they made the game actually enjoyable for players, rather than squeezing them for every dime, I guarantee they would still make sizeable profits, while ensuring the future of the game. This shortsighted practice Gaijin has engaged in is not going to kill the game in a month, and probably not even in a year. But several years down the line, there will come a time when Gaijin sees the error of their ways.

    I don’t want to see the death of War Thunder. Partially because I’ve put hundreds of hours and hundreds of dollars into this game, but mostly because it is a game that has found a place in my heart. Gaijin can talk about how negative reviews will kill the game all they want, but the only one killing the game is themselves. I hope that Gaijin can finally understand the weight of their actions and change in a meaningful way, but until that happens, I am done.    … Expand

    The blatant bias towards certain countries at the moment is ruining the balance of the game and the fact that some have tech 20 years ahead of all other nations is appalling.

    I try to enjoy this game, I really do, but at its current state its not worth the attachment.

    If you are going to play War Thunder. Wait for a future update where it gets better. OR don't spend a single dime on this game, even if it feels impossible to continue in your tech tree. It's the only way they will listen to the community.

    If you want an alternative games still fun to play for Air - based PvP or PvE; try out VTOL VR or DCS. Both are better time investments. The only time consuming part of those games are learning the aircraft and how they operate.

    After spending 800 hours in this game, after buying premium account , after buying premium vehicles, farm still feels like ass. Many bugs, very bad damage from some munition, meta vehicles kills the game. But recent economic changes were the last drop.

There is no way to play above 4th tier.     Also, they started to unfold vehicles in tech-tree and it became more difficult to get to the top tier just wasting time and money on opening similar vehicles.

Most people recently lost it with the proposed economy changes. As a few content creators had portrayed, making silver lions became such a grind, even more than before. This just loops back around to Gaijin being one of the greediest and cutthroat gaming companies I know of in the industry. And they wanted to plunder all of their cash by turning their free-to-play one of a kind game into a cash cow, but they can only milk it for so long.     I am hopping on the band wagon after seeing Gaijins awful tone deaf response. I am joining the review bombing because its the only way to get through to the devs, Gaijin cannot silence or remove our comments on here like they do on their "feedback" forms. For the sake of the game, I hope they can listen and make appropriate changes.

    Do not go into the game as a new player, you will have fun for the first bit but eventually you will get slammed into a brick wall. This game could be fun but until the company decides to retract it's predatory methods, AVOID AT ALL COST.
    Currently, there is a boycott on May 26th, 2023. it is encouraged to not play on that day and after until something is done. Change can happen.

It was quite refreshing to try War Thunder and I quickly fell in love with the game, probably mostly because I couldn’t yet grasp the scope of economic **** going on with Gaijin. I purchased some premium vehicles as well as premium account and processed quickly through the lower ranks. The higher I got them and the more I learned about the game on Reddit made it clear that Gaijin is just as bad as Wargaming. It’s sad to see game developers resort to milking the player base when creating a good game would probably ensure more new players in the long run and more revenue for a longer period of time.… Expand

    I've been playing this game for over 3 years now. I only play Enduring confrontation in Air Simulation mode. Because it is more real and you can only fly from cockpit view, making it harder to kill other players by just point and click skilless shots.

    Over the last year and a half Gaijin has made it progressively worse to be able to advance in the game. Instead of fixing the bug that    I've been playing this game for over 3 years now. I only play Enduring confrontation in Air Simulation mode. Because it is more real and you can only fly from cockpit view, making it harder to kill other players by just point and click skilless shots.

    Over the last year and a half Gaijin has made it progressively worse to be able to advance in the game. Instead of fixing the bug that farmers exploit they raise repair cost, take away RP rewards while at the same time making it that you can only play high tier with premium vehicles and premium account in realistic mode (which is purely a mouse point and click mode).

    Further more, ALL the vehicles have some kind of bug or problem, VR still has lots of bugs and it doesn't matter how much you report it the don't fit it.

    It seems Gaijin does not to care about making the players happy. I'm 37 years old with wife and kids, if spent over $1500 in this game. Most people don't have infinite amounts of time in their life to grind, we just want to enjoy the game and play for a little bit.

    Gaijin STOP BEING GREEDY FIX THE ECONOMY, MAKE SIM MODE MATCH EC AND AB SL AND RP GAINS....FIX THE EXPLOITS!

    Modern tanks in War Thunder was reason why I started playing again. It is most interesting part I want to experience as there is basically no alternative (Armored Warfare is dead PvE game). It is a lot of fun to play with modern features on tanks and have planty of mechanics to use however there some huge drawbacks to that.

    1. Grind
    This is one of the most painful thing in game. You cannot just play modern vehicles without grinding entire tech tree full of WWII crapy tanks. The only option is to get high tier premium tank with premium time and play lots of battles with it to get into modern era. Regural grind is just too slow to be viable option for working person. End even with premium tank and account there is still problem with credits as credits rewards are just too low in my opinion.

    2. Matchmaking
    Most of the games you get uptier games. I still do not understand why both Gaijin and Wargaming have to have stupidly large spread for games. Most of time they use word "diversity". I really do not care about diversity of tanks in battle I just want to have fair fight to have fun. It is really not fun to try fights tanks where you struggle to pen frontal weakspot on tank on map where you cannot flank. It is just so frustrating on bad maps.

    3. Maps
    There are a lot of maps that are just not suitable for modern tanks. Some maps are just too small and team that win first wave will just spawn camp second team. Some maps are so open that it result in sniping contest from one spawn to other. Gaijin should make some maps available just for modern tanks and some just for lower tiers. I can't imagine suffer when you get extra large map with slow WWII tank.

    4. Limited time Content
    This is just pure money milking. There are some tanks that can be obtainet during events and this is just plain stupid. If you join game right now you won't be able to get those tank or have to pay ridiculous prices on market. Limited time content alway was and will be cancer of gaming as you locking out potential future players from it.

    5. CAS
    I would love to have option to play tanks only battles. CAS is just feature for frustration. There is no AI protection from CAS. The only counter are AA vehicles but most of time noone plays them from start of the game as they are simply useless until someone spawn in plane or heli. If you kill someone be prepared you mostly die in revenge bombing. In some battles it feels like you are in your tank just NPC to be destroyed by plane or heli. The worst part is you cannot do anzthing about it unles you have AA in your arsenal and even than you will have hard time to shoot them down unless you have good AA.

    I strongly do not recommend any new player to start to play this game. It will be pure frustration if you want to go for modern tanks.

    It is sad that neither WoT or WT does not have any real competition as both Gaijin and Wargaming only wants to milk money their player base and they can do it because there is no other option.    … Expand

    The official launch of War Thunder reminded me why I like this game so much. It's adorably chaotic - in contrast to the reliably designed World of Tanks. That's why it can be really fun and frustrating at the same time. There's tons of great vehicles (and the planes are superb!) and a difficult simulation mode, but there are also balance and technical issues.
