THIS GAME IS GOOD, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

With that said, I have soooo many issues with it and despite the fact that I understand why this game is good, in my opinion, this was the most boring game I've ever played in 2015. I couldn't get past the third boss for how mind numbingly boring it was, and how the morality "system" is so utterly and insanely broken and flawed, that I just couldn't keep playing. It's definitely one of those games where you either love it or hate it. Guess which side I am?

But first things first: if people love this game there must be reasons and there ARE reasons: the writing is top notch, the music is BRILLIANT and SUPERB (seriously, I hate the game but I constantly listen to its music) and the gameplay is varied and enjoyable (I guess?). The game is story based and so you'll end up following it in order to finish it, rather than playing it for the gameplay. If I have to pick a real flaw it would be its length: you can finish it the first time in about 6 hours...but it's one of those games that forces you to restart at least once in order to get the true ending, "because that's good development sign"

Jokes aside, I honestly have no issue with its technical aspect: it's fantastic, and it has no real issues with almost anything...but then why do I hate this game so much?

It's simple: the game itself is, in a very general way of speaking, a "teaching game" of how "killing is bad" and "doing the right thing is good" and that's a very rough way of describing it. There is more to it, but the game will essentially punish you for doing any evil things and reward you for doing good things. There is a neutral ending, yes, but it's still the same thing.

I'm sorry, I heard this game was supposed to be SO advanced in terms of morality, but all I'm seeing is a dumbed down version of Mass Effect all of those morality system we have so far: I really don't feel invested on being good or evil, because being evil automatically locks you from the good ending WITHOUT ANY WAYS OF REDEEMING YOURSELF. In addition, I found the characters extremely annoying and hard to care about, I wished I could kill them...but if I kill even one of them, I get the bad ending so what's the point?

And that's also sad because the fighting is actually good: everytime you get to fight, you have the chance to avoid incoming damage by actually avoiding the enemy attacks, which is a great thing! However, if you decide to go for pacifist, you won't gain exp and levels and will be stuck at lvl 1...i-isn't that so much fun? y-y-y-yay...yay....

But I understand all of this: the game is all about to be rewarded for doing the good things, and being punished for the bad things...but I'm sorry we all know that this is not true: sometimes you have to act bad for achieving the good, and being good will often lead you "to the bad ending". That's not a theory: it's a life fact, it's a thing that happens all the time and that's why this game really bothers me.

Plus, I don't need a game to tell me that killing is bad and Undertale, on this part, was treating me like an idiot.

So despite the rant, I highly recommend this game...because it's good, it's NOT FOR ME but I can see why it's good for many others: it's detailed, it's filled with passion and has nothing terrible going on. But it might or might not bother you about its message and story parts, which really discouraged me to get through the true ending and because I honestly didn't care a single bit about its character: they were boring, and if I tried to act differently than "goodie goodie", I'd get a slap for being "evily evil".

On this morality regard, I just played better games...and overall, better rpgs.

It's been a very long time since I've played a game that has so genuinely touched me. It strikes up a lot of emotions. The battle system is very unique. The characters are great, the interactions are great, the music is great, everything is great about it. And what's most amazing is that it was developed by one person! Thanks Toby Fox for this awesome game!

    CONTROL/MECHANICS = 9
I do not like Role-Playing Games. Walking Simulator games are validly criticized for having all the interactivity of pressing the "Play" button on a DVD, an experience that could be faithfully recreated by watching a full-length playthrough on Youtube (with branching extra Youtube videos to click on if you make alternate choices in the game). By that standard, RPG's are sequences of Youtube videos where you must roll dice to see if you get to watch the next video or must restart and roll again. All of the "gameplay" is accomplished internally by the RPG's random number generator, your nigh-omnipotent gaming PC wasted rendering what is essentially a card game with a coat of paint over it. I remember playing Final Fantasy on the original NES and thinking that the lack of gameplay was a concession to the limitations of the hardware against rendering more action, and that the RPG style of game would die out in future generations, and to this day I still can't believe I was wrong about that.
Fortunately, Undertale is not an RPG. The core gameplay is moving your character's heart icon out of the way of enemy attacks, like a Bullet Hell shooter where you can't shoot back, to avoid taking damage. Cleverly, each enemy type has different but character-specific attack patterns to learn and adapt to.
In between each defense, you have the option of either attacking or talking to the enemy. Talking is kind of like a conversation puzzle where you try and figure out which of the options is having the right effect, until the enemy is willing to surrender on request.
Attacking is, frankly, disappointing, the same timer minigame every time, pressing "Z" when the line crosses the exact center, like the field goal mechanic in "NFL Blitz 2001". You'll try it a few times, then give up because the conversation tactic is more interesting. Even the Mario RPG series had several attack patterns you could try.
There are also a few puzzles in the overworld which are nice distractions.

    PRESENTATION = 7
The game is rendered in NES-style graphics, with references to alot of games I never played (again, not an RPG fan). It works, but it would have worked better with modern graphics. There are 2D physics in some of the puzzles.
The plot is really excellent, very self-aware and genuinely cognizant of the failings of similar types of games (i.e., it mocks tutorials sort of like "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon"). Disappointingly, and annoyingly, none of the dialogue is voiced. This game was made in 2015, not 1985, and “homage” only goes so far in excusing the failures of having an insufficient development budget.

    DESIGN = 7
The game is linear, but stays engaging throughout its 6 hour runtime, largely because the enemy attack patterns changed, but also because I could never quite predict what would happen next.
Attacking enemies, however, suffers from the major flaw that if you befriend enemies through conversation, you only get money to buy healing items; but to keep attacking the progressively higher-level enemies without missing, you need to level up, which can only be done through the violent option. So you can't switch back and forth, which inevitably funnels you towards the talking option and the nonviolent ending.
But, overall, Undertale earns its 9 for staying fun and providing a unique experience with entertaining dialogue. It might have gotten a perfect 10 if it hadn’t chained its presentation to the 1980s and if there were more minigames for attacking the enemies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a bit behind on the times in reviewing this, I know. But I honestly loved this game. I thought what it did with what little it had was very impressive. The story was entertaining and I can't stop listening to the amazing music. Some people are hating on the graphics but I honestly found it very impressive how far the creator was able to go with them. Graphics don't make a game. Story, character, and heart (heh) make a game, which Undertale has plenty of. Regardless, I can't give it a perfect score. Why? There are a few reasons.

I feel like the story needed to be fleshed out a little bit more. According to a walkthrough I read only after completing the game, if you backtrack all the way back to the VERY beginning, you'll be able to talk to Asriel to get more background story "that may be necessary to fully understand the story". Important plot points shouldn't be held back in secret areas like this. The first human was a pretty important detail that needed to be explained further in the main game. Well-hidden areas or conversations are for side details or amusing Easter eggs, not main plot threads. Not only that, but I really would have liked a bit more detail on some of the main characters as well, but that's just a nitpick. Still, what we got was mostly pretty clear, so I wouldn't take away too many points for this.

Also, the combat system is not especially my cup of tea. I'm not personally great at bullet-hell kinds of games, so I felt like that kind of held me back from fully enjoying the game because the combat system often felt more frustrating than I feel it needed to. But that may be just me. Not everyone can be good at every kind of game, after all.

Finally, while I fully enjoyed the differences in morality between killing and sparing creatures, and I feel it made for an incredible difference in dynamic, I feel like the all-or-nothing route was a little bit... excessive? I mean, I don't feel like anyone could really fault a child for fighting a strange creature back when it was hurling attacks at him. However, the extent to which they basically treat you like Hitler after killing almost anything in this game is a little much. As I said, I really do enjoy the game and its different paths, but it REALLY is a little on the nose.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the game, even with these few small criticisms. If you can appreciate the game for what it is without getting hung-up on the graphics or the peculiar combat system, I think there's really something to appreciate here.

This game is creative and clever. It has great dialogue and fun puzzles. The game truly excels in its humour and characters. For one play through it is approximately 7 hours long and well worth playing. The game will lay out the rules of combat and interactions then defy its own rules to create an extremely unique experience.

Undertale is less a game and more an experience that makes you question not only your actions on a moral level but the very foundations of how video games can tell a story. It completely shatters common barriers between the the in game story and the out of story elements of the game, even turning your game saves into vital plot points.

I don't often give games a straight 10/10 score because normally it denotes an uncritical fanboyish response to a game, but undertale is truely something special, the mere fact that someone could create such a subversive, beautiful and utterly engaging story almost single handedly from a $50k kickstarter is mind boggling and makes this game utterly deserving of such a high score.

The story is great. Some of the side activities or side quests if you can call it that is fantastic.
This is a pretty solid rpg. With replay value. And i wont be surprised that i will replay this one more time down the line.
Also the graphic , what to say it has it charm , it works in this 2d rpg. Last thing is to say is try not to watch anything on youtube before you play this. Go in scratch with no barely no info about the game is best and you will actually go in and visit a wonderful created game.
So my rating well i cant help it but is a 10 , i dont find any real flaw in it , and compared to alot of other games is actually not that easy is quite hard, not dark souls hard or anything but, hard enough, it has replay value. While i don`t really agree with gamefaq that is the best game ever ,is was population contest tough , because i am one of the few who think there probably wont be a best game ever. Anyway it among my favourite games and i cant say this enough this games has tons of charm, humor and did i mention the atmosphere is fantastic.
    Thanks for reading.

PS:MINOR SPOILER REGARDING THE ENDING i almost wished i didn't complete it today on my b-day as the ending surprised me and i taught the game glitch over and over, not funny when i thought i had to do the last boss again, but still when i think about it wasn't that bad, it worked pretty well and was actually a little fun when you realise the game is just joking with you .

For sure, this game is good. It's a well-made game with lots of humor and a great story. But it's definitely not game-of-the-year material. People love indie games because when you don't have producers telling you how to make your game, a lot of really interesting ideas can be implemented in your game, like the combination of an RPG-style combat system with bullet-hell minigames. But this game is more of an interactive story than a game. And I guess that's what an RPG is supposed to be. But look at Pokemon. Look at Fire Emblem. Look at the Mario & Luigi games. Those are all RPGs that have gameplay that's just deep enough that you can be good or bad at them. With Undertale, the gameplay is pretty shallow, meaning it's easy to get the hang of, but not really satisfying. It means you can't be good or bad at the game. Granted, this is a plus to some people, like casual gamers, but to people who like a challenge, it will leave you wanting more.

The story and characters, on the other hand, are original and interesting. They'll make you laugh, they'll make you cry, yadda yadda, no spoilers. But most importantly, they'll make you think critically about the choices you make in the game. Normally, you'd go with your gut reaction when presented with a choice in a video game. But since this game isn't all that long, it really pays to spend some time seriously thinking about whether or not what you're doing is the right thing to do.

In terms of presentation, this game is definitely lacking. The game is not pretty. It looks like it could've been drawn in MS Paint. But to a lot of you, graphics don't matter, so you can ignore what I'm saying. The MUSIC, on the other hand, is some of the best music I've heard in an indie game, or any video game for that matter. Just look up the song "Dummy!" if you have any doubts. It really drives that atmosphere home, because the graphics surely do not.

Overall, this game is really good. For a game that came late on the simple-pixellated-indie bandwagon, it really is a special game. It just really isn't all that fun to play from a gameplay perspective, and it certainly doesn't deserve Game of the Year, especially up against games like Witcher 3 and MGS5. Simply put, this game is overrated, but for all the right reasons.

Undertale is an incredible experience that you really can't express using words. Sure, I could sit here and say that the writing is humorous and creative, or that the combat system is unique and inspired, or that the story leaves a lasting impression that I didn't think could be fit into ~6 hours of play, but it still does not do the game any justice at all. While the graphics and typical RPG gameplay may be unassuming, there is a treasure lying just beneath the surface; a treasure filled with lovable characters, surprisingly deep moments, and a soundtrack that you'll be humming to yourself for months or even years after you're done playing.

Overall, it's just really difficult to put in words why Undertale is so good. It really needs to be played and experienced to have the full effect. It's honestly one of the best games I've ever played, and anyone who rates it less than a 5/10 is either spiteful, ignorant, or they just plain don't like RPGs.

So here is my honest review of Undertale, with me not being freaking ridiculous.
Plot: 9/10. The plot is definitely one of Undertale's strong points. I'm not going to spoil it, but I do have to say that it makes you really care about the characters (even the ones you didn't know existed until 30 minutes ago), with a few teary moments.
Soundtrack: 100/10. No, I'm not kidding. The soundtrack to this game is freaking awesome. Music always fits the area you are in, and you'll find yourself listening to Spider Dance over and OVER AND OVER again. Oh, and Megalovania.
Gameplay: 9/10. The gameplay on the overworld is almost exactly the same as all RPG's you will have ever played, but its the battles that stand out. First of all, and most importantly, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FIGHT. Yes, you can just talk it out with an enemy instead of fighting. That alone changes the plot drastically, but another thing stands out; its bullet hell-type gameplay. Instead of just generic turn-based strategy, you actually have a chance of surviving an encounter with an enemy without getting hurt, which I felt was a nice change of gameplay.
Graphics: 8/10. Not this game's strongest point, but definitely unique, with different pixelated styles seen throughout the game.

Undertale is a kind of game that is surprising in its depth. It's a simple retro RPG on the surface with graphics more at home a couple decades ago, but once it gets going, it becomes quite the experience. It's clever writing ranges from light-hearted fun to tearjerker material. It's lovable cast of characters can become like family. It's soundtrack is one of the best I've heard yet. If you're a videogame dork, Undertale will subvert your expectations in many ways, ranging from horrific to humorous. A downside is that the otherwise innovative battles can be too difficult for some, but its ultimately part of the experience. It just may pose a barrier unfortunately. My advice? Go in blind. I played this game with my girlfriend, we both really loved it.

What a surprising game. Every step of the way it keeps playing with what you think a game should be, and keeps giving you something else completely different, yet better. If you are bored with every game being the same, this will wake you up.

So me and pretty much everyone else on the planet love this game. What else is new? Is it perfect? No. But I don't care, cause it's been about 5 months since I played it and I still think about it. I mean, you could argue something like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings is over hyped, but that doesn't stop them from being pretty damn good. I'm also royally pissed that they gave game of the year to freaking Rocket League instead of this game. That feels a bit like the Oscars snubbing Singing In The Rain.

Now, I'm not interested in convincing any of you that this game isn't overrated (its not) because if that's how you feel, I probably can't change your mind. But I am concerned that some of y'all have been told that there's a right way to play this game. That you have to get the good ending to have a fun time. That is a lie. Play the game however the hell you like, and you will have fun. It's impossible for you to get the worst ending without trying too. Making mistakes is part of the experience and part of the power in the story. And if your told that you have to get it right the first time, then yeah, you'll probably be a little bit annoyed at the game. And that's no way to go about your free time. When you play Undertale, just be your garbage self.

This is quite an interesting game. It takes a lot of inspiration from Earthbound. Never played it myself, but I can see why it would be so popular.

The Pacifist Route, which is gained by sparing everything, aside from a couple fights that must be fought, leads to the good ending.
Combat follows a sort of bullet-hell mechanic, which is different from traditional JRPG combat, where you can basically dodge everything.
The story is fairly simple, but I think it's pretty good.
The characters are all varied and likable, and they all have their own quirks and stuff.
The humor is good, though may come across as sort of childish.
The music is well-composed and catchy, some of the tracks are incredibly good and varied, also, most of them are le motifs of each other.
All in all, a solid game. If I had to make any complaints, a few fights are a bit annoying, and the visuals do come across as a bit poor.

For example, without Undertale, how would we now know that skeletons enjoy Italian cuisine, making bad puns, and referencing current Internet culture? This game still has so many secrets and lessons to discover: even the world's foremost expert on the topic, Dr. Matthew Patrick, is doing deep research on Undertale and making new discoveries every day. This Deep Research has led to incredible Culture-Shocking discoveries, such as the fact that one of the skeletons depicted in this work of art was in fact once a living person who as a kid would murder stray animals with a baseball bat. Undertale is a work of art so profound that even the Pope owns a copy despite not owning a computer, and plans to soon begin incorporating verses from the game in his sermons. As I am but a man, I cannot tell you what kind of path Undertale will lead our society along. I am sure of one thing, however: when historians go back and look at our current time, they will point to Undertale's release as a clear starting point for when society began to reach Utopia. Expand

-The Morality System: Your every action has consequenses. Unless you go into the game's files, the game could potentially remember you killing a single enemy and then reseting 100 times. The Game is not afraid to shatter the fourth wall, and when it does, it does so with glee.

-The Combat System: The game is a combination of traditional RPGs and Bullet-Hell shooters. You can dodge every attack if you are good enough. Also, with the ability to spare of kill any Monster you encounter, it challenges what we think of as good RPGs.

-The Story: While the story is basic at first, it is more about the characters you meet along the way. Flowey, the master of fourth wall breaking and a terrifying creature. Toriel, the motherly character who will do anything to protect you. Sans, a skeleton armed with bad puns and bad times. Papyrus, the brother of Sans who will do anything to join the Royal Guard and loves cooking spaghetti. Undyne, the leader of the Royal Guard with a hotheaded personality. Alphys, the Royal Scientist with a dark secret and a passion for Anime. Mettaton, the Killer Robot TV Host. Asgore, the king of all Monsters. Not to mention each Monster in a battle has a personality.

-The Endings: Neutral, Pacifist, and Genocide. The Three endings. I can't spoil to much, except that each ending accomplishes very different things. For Example, while Pacifist gives you a feeling of happiness, Genocide is physically and Mentally exhausting. In Genocide, you're gonna have a bad time.

-The Music: Oh My Days, the Music. Beatiful in every way.

Is this a good game? Yes. This surpassed all my expectations. 10/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am into all the war games and stuff, but this was truely satisfying, especially on the route this game intends for you you to take. It's not just 4th wall breaks, or the character cast, or the few bloopers in the game, or the easter eggs that seem to be very fun. It's also the way the game plays out too. Also, considering there's only one way to delete your save file(Not a "Reset"), it really adds to the gameplay. And personally, if someone criticizes that the game does not have violence, I think they need to have a second thought. This game even has the violence to satisfy a T+ gamer's needs. You guys should try the game itself, otherwise, you won't know what kind of game this is. The reason Toby Fox didn't want the game to be posted on youtube was not because of spoilers, but because people would think they got spoiled and miss an oppurtunity of pure golden gameplay in a 16-bit retro style pack. Usually a step back in graphics allows a step forward in gameplay from what I seen from Toby Fox and his helpful studio. Expand

It has a well executed plot with admirable morals to learn from each character. Every monster in Undertale has a backstory and a personality, rather they are a minority or a main character, which you often don't see in other RPGs. It's also one of the only RPGs I have ever seen where nobody has to die. Undertale challenges gaming conventions like this constantly and **** with your head in ways that I can't even say without spoiling the game. And on top of all of that, the soundtrack is phenomenal, easily the best one of the whole year.

Yes, I know the fanbase puts a lot of people off from the game, but honestly, I believe the fandom has nothing to do with the game at all. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is really good~ It's based on a really REALLY great game called "Earthbound." The creator, Toby Fox, is really funny and cool. He has made another game before, Hacked version of Earthbound. SO, with that, let's review the game itself. So you're a kid who fell to the underground. You learn that the humans and monsters had a war many years ago. But you also learn about the monsters and some really good life lessons like "Treat others with kindness and they will (probably) give you kindness back" or "Always stay determined and never give up on yourself!" We should probably talk about these really cool characters. Let's start off with the character you first meet, Flowey! He's evil but with a purpose. Toriel loves humans (for a reason that is a HUGE spoiler~) Sans is a smart but lazy skele (Also SPOILERS) Papyrus, an over working INNOCENT skele because he is a GREAAAAT PAPYRUS after all. There's undyne. She's the head of the royal guard, and REALLY hot headed. She thinks humans are anime and is over all innocent (besides killing you) Alphys is a weeb scientist. Asgore is the king (and a WHOLE LOT of spoilers) And there are two other main characters but they are also spoilers~ I love this game because
of there's no going back. If you do something, like killing EVERYONE, there's no going back.

I love this game because at times it is horrifying but cute at the same time.

(Turkish Only) - Önce şunu diyeceğim.

This game has brilliant replay value because of it's three main endings and a large variation of messages from one of the main characters about how your actions in the game have affected the future. I would definitely recommend this to any fans of RPGs or anyone with a sense of humor. Expand

This game is probably as close to perfection as it can get. The story, characters and style of the game are fantastic and it manages to get it's main message across almost perfectly- that there is always a peaceful solution to every problem.

This game is a breath of fresh air for RPGs and gaming in general. It questions morality in an interesting way and has the characters to back up this statement.

Amazing music, fun gameplay, interesting story.

The only part where it could fall flat is the artstyle. It isn't too amazing, but doesn't detract from the game experience at all.

P.S. (Many haters say that the game is bad only because of its community and graphics. Well, for the first time the game cannot spoil the community because it is single in dota 2 and cs: go yes it can-be. As for graphics, one person created it first I can not argue he could create better graphics, but think about what games he was inspired and then you will understand everything! Have a nice day)

It's extremely linear and although your choices are recorded by the game, honestly there just isn't that many choices you can actually make, its more like one choice over and over again. Because of these things, as a whole the game is much more like 'one shot' by Mathew Velasquez and NightMargin than earthbound. Which isn't bad. One shot was great and if you liked that game I would recommend this game or vice-versa.

I would just agree that this game is similar to earthbound in more of an Easter egg way, then anything else . However, you have to consider, earthbound, was a fully staffed, and much larger game. Which is all the more reason to buy this game and support Toby. Unlike soooo many kickstart games that are ridiculously bad or never even finished. I think Toby delivered a solid enough game to give me hope. This game is not an epic adventure, its more like a fun romp in a very small city. But if you enjoy it for what it is, it is fun enough. And who knows, Undertale 2, or whatever is next, could be spectacular.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This essay is as non-spoiler-y as possible until a paragraph later on. I'll let you know before hand if you want to keep your experience garden fresh.
It's very strange for me to be writing a legitimate review on just about any game, but I feel that Undertale is an exception to the rule in the fact that although it is extremely flawed, the parts that make up the whole are incredibly charming and amazing in more ways than a rational human being should imagine.

Mechanically, it's really not the most amazing thing in the world. When you break it down, the fighting system is entirely timing based and the mercy system a more intuitive version of the part-time barista minigame in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. But where it shines is how exactly it uses this admittedly bland system to make many fights their own little events. The best example I can give without being too spoiler-y is one of the main boss battles, in which you're confronted by someone who's been chasing your tail for quite a while, but you manage to escape every time. How do you win peacefully against this rather determined figure? By running away of course!

The story, to be honest, is very weird and sometimes a bit convoluted. A few plot points hinge on smaller details, and unless you're meticulous, you might just miss them. It is rather amusing, however, and if you can keep up you're in for one hell of a ride. The best part about the story is, again, how it twists itself to fit the situation. It remembers everything you do. If you think I'm joking, I'm not. It remembers if you accidentally hurt someone and tried to go back so you didn't do it again. It remembers if you lied to someone, how you reacted, IF you hurt someone...

If anything shines directly and without remorse, it's the artistic presentation in three mediums; the writing, the art, and the music. Every character is a /character/. If you fight them, their fighting animation is unique to them and them alone. Their speech patterns are never shared unless they're more minor NPCs, and every major character has a personalized Bebebese they say with their lines. But even minor characters have some serious personality, such as the odd Vegetoid or the Temmies. Settings are, indeed, settings. The look and feel of each area, from the Ruins to Hotland, varies drastically. You can feel the freezing cold or sweltering heat, the water spraying onto the rocks or even the eerie silence of a hopeless city. The music made me cry. No, seriously. Near the end of the game I was bawling like a child, and I cried again the day after completing it. The music is just gorgeous.

But if there's anything I want to praise louder than anything is the tone of the entire experience. For reference, my first run was Pre-Pacifist and my second was True, so I got the fluffy end of the stick. For those of you taking the No Mercy run first, you will not have the same experience. In fact your experience will be drastically different and could reshape the entire game for you, and that's part of what I like about it. The game, as I experienced it, is one of becoming more than the sum of yourself. I know it sounds weird but hear me out.

Here's where the spoilers kick in, so skip this if you don't want to be spoiled.

At the end of the True Pacifist run, you have to fight someone in particular who not only sucked up six of the seven human souls needed to break the barrier, but literally every monster soul in the entirety of the caverns. You cannot beat this boss with violence. Your attacks always miss him and his defense is infinity. What you can do is hope and dream with all your essence that you can persevere, and eventually you discover even this was not enough. You cannot defeat this boss on your own. Instead, you reach out to your friends souls, the ones that you made along the way, and free them. Each of them are just as you remember from before, but it is only after you remind them that what they were is not all they can be, and that you can be a part of them, that they truly snap out of their trance. Finally, then, you can reach out to the one who took them in the first place, and ask him if you can be a part of him too. It's an amazing, touching, epic moment, and it spoke to the small, afraid ten year old me inside that was still making these mistakes. It hit me right there.

    Spoilers over!

If this was any other game, without its charm and compassion to do something just a bit different, Undertale would be mediocre at best. The music and art save it from being trash, and the characters would bump up the experience, but the combat and story would still be a slog. As it is, however, Undertale is what it strives to teach; you can make those mistakes. You are greater than the sum of your parts. Remember those who taught you that, and you will go far in life.

Or you can just kill everyone and have a really bad time. Your choice, really.

Undertale is an absolutely charming, hilarious and clever indie RPG that wound up making me incredibly emotionally invested within the very first hour. Toby Fox clearly understands what makes a RPG great, and understands the many flaws that the genre harbors and channeled all that knowledge into Undertale.

The theme the game carries is being a 'friendly RPG' where killing is totally unnecessary and your choice alone. It's a theme that's more than just conventional and runs deep into the core, and works absolutely wonderfully and results in extremely great encounters and dialogue.

Nothing in Undertale feels like a drag. Everything has been put into the game for very specific purposes, and it almost feels like Toby Fox thought of every possible outcome when working on the game. It's mind blowing.

It sounds like I'm just nerding out and gushing about the game, but it really is that fantastic. The flaws that I have are purely nitpicks and do nothing to ruin what the game pushes forward. NPCs could look more lively and I would've loved to see more of the world it presents, amongst other things. All just little tiny nitpicks.

The sad thing is, talking about many of the things that make Undertale the fantastic game it is would require spoiling the experience itself. However, to put it in short... I don't believe I'll ever be able to play another RPG the same way again after experiencing Undertale.

Please do yourself a favour and play this spectacular game.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
