I mean all I've seen in complaints are. "GRAPHICS. INDIE. THIS GAME ISN'T THE BEST PC GAME CAUSE. REVIEW SYSTEM IN METACRITIC IS DUMB. THE MUSIC ISN'T SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T FIT THIS GENRE. IT USES NOLSTAGIA! I COULDN'T USE THE INTERWEBS ON MY IN-GAME CELLPHONE"

Soundtrack is epic, it really fits the game, everything about the game is awesome, can't find criticism.

It deserves a 10 for that alone, not to mention the actual GAME itself is fantastic, mixing genres and changing the way I’ve been playing rpg's for the past 15 years. It may sound like blind praise to someone else but hey, that’s just how this game made me feel, that’s all i can say.

    Also, soundtrack is **** amazing.

This game is easily one of the best I've ever played. Through its good use of humor, emotion, and gameplay, I can easily say this is a game well worth its very, very affordable price.

This game is easily one of the best I've ever played. Through its good use of humor, emotion, and gameplay, I can easily say this is a game well worth its very, very affordable price.

    PROS:
+Very interactive combat. Despite being an RPG, combat isn't simply clicking items in a menu and maximizing stats and gear. Attacking can be done with a timing-based minigame to deal more damage, defending is more akin to Galaga or the Touhou series than simply hoping the enemy will miss. There's also the option to negotiate with monsters instead of fighting them outright.
+Fun characters. The main cast of this game is, by and large, hilariously written. The characters are relatively simple, but they keep a fun and lovable air throughout the story that almost forces the player to care about them and their problems.
+Great soundtrack. Toby Fox's work on the soundtrack shows his talent with music. This soundtrack in particular is one giant love-letter to leitmotifs, with simple jingles you heard at the beginning of the game coming back around again and again, mixed into different songs and in different contexts.
+Cute artwork. The 8-bit overworld avatars aren't much to speak of, but in battles the player gets to truly enjoy the pixel-art of Tuyoki and Toby Fox.
+Contextual interactions. The game takes note of almost everything you do, even little choices you make in the early game. While it enjoys flaunting this throughout the game in extra dialogue or subtle nods, it's most notable in that the game recognizes its own completion and will change drastically around the ending the player achieved. One character in particular will even take note of choices you made, regretted, and restarted the game to undo.
+Sub- and meta-text. This is a game about games, and so it's very intriguing to see how it seems to revel in psychologically analyzing your actions as a character in the context of your actions as a player.
+Price. For $10 on Steam, completionists are getting at least 10 hours of entertainment. It's a good deal, and you won't feel like you've wasted money.

    CONS:
-A bit short. While it could be said that this game has said everything it needed to say in its few hours of playtime, most of any player's playtime is going to be spent replaying the game for other endings or dialogue options. It's a bit hard to not skip old dialogue when it hasn't even been three hours since you read it last. Relying on replay-value is only so good when most of your fun comes from humor, and thus jokes you've heard before. Perhaps this is part of the game's meta-text, but it still gets a bit tiresome.
-Intricate plot. While normally this would be a positive note, here it's a bit of an annoyance. The plot of the game is somewhat confusing, and can only be understood completely by getting three different endings which require three entire runs of the game and backtracking immensely after doing certain tasks.
-Meta-text interferes with the narrative. This game likes to keep an open relationship with the fourth-wall, and as a consequence it sometimes muddies what's being said to the player versus what's being said to the character. It can get fairly confusing at times, but I never got so lost that I couldn't resolve the issue. It simply tends to break immersion.

Despite the negatives, I feel the positives of this game far outweigh them. My strongest complaint is the need for repeat playthroughs for a full experience, and I suppose if my biggest complaint is "I wanted to play this game more", then that's not much to say.

9.5/10. Buy this game. You won't regret it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I saw the reviews for it ranking it with GTA, I definitely didn't see it. Now, I'm only about 2 hours in and it's one of the most fascinating games I have ever seen. The games it is most reminiscent of is Mother or Earthbound, but it's actually totally different from that.

Undertale is, by its own definition, the very first game that you can complete without killing any opponents. This twist is something that has slipped games since their inception. You're just supposed to kill the bad guys, no matter what. From Space Invaders to GTA that is games' purpose. In this game, though, you are trained not to from the very beginning, and it is up to you to actually choose which of your opponents is given mercy or is killed (or obviously you can be killed).

    *MILD SPOILERS*

However, the way it does this is fascinating. It trains you with a mother figure to attack a dummy. When I started this game, I killed the dummy because I was having controller troubles. This "irreversibly changed the game". All because I killed that dummy, subtle changes in the game's atmosphere led me to kill many more creatures out of spite. That caused many others to hate me, and the main villain to laugh all the way to the bank. It is so fascinatingly humanizing in a way that I've never seen from any piece of media done this well.

I understand why the game is so plain now – if this were an AAA title, this would be practically impossible to accomplish. It had to have been done by one guy, and it was. It was created, written, composed by 1 guy and edited by a couple of others for finishing touches. That blows my mind. It's the Cave Story of RPGs.

And have you ever gotten really frustrated at a boss and just reset the game after making a terrible decision in fighting it to clear your record? Well, let's just say you can't do that here.

So, pay $10 and play the game. It's a must for anyone, a one of a kind.

The story telling is spot-on, immediately developing attachment to characters within the first 5 minutes of gameplay, and it only grows from there. The music is quite lovely and brilliantly composed and the spritework is top-notch.

The interesting bit about Undertale is that the more you play, the more "meta" the game becomes. Certain characters begin to take notice that you've been there before, or have a faint memory of seeing you. That, combined with the different endings and hidden secrets, allows for a very, VERY interesting play-through with high replayability value.

I was a really big Mother 1 and Earthbound fan growing up, so I pay attention when a game gets compared to one of them. It is my opinion that Undertale deserves much of it's praise in that regard, as it does a pretty well job of nailing the happy go lucky aloofness along with some darker themes.

Oh, and the boss fights are pretty **** rad. Not sure what else to say, if you are mildly curious check out the demo, it is a pretty sizeable jaunt and can give you a good idea what to expect.

I clocked in about 10 hours after getting 2 of the endings, but I won't spoil any more.

    A. It has pixel art-style graphics: Seriously? It's a game. You play it for gameplay and the experience, not pretty lights to stare at in mesmerized wonder.
    B. It leans on Earthbound for its style: For what? its art style? The commentary on the nature of RPGs that Earthbound didn't have? The plot Earthbound didn't have? The multiple endings that Earthbound didn't have? Its now-res graphics and chiptune music? Or maybe just how you use mundane objects as items? The only similarities are in surface perception, not the actual game and how it's designed.
    C. It takes a long time: Really? It's an RPG, all of which are inherently long, and Undertale is a relatively short one at that, taking only 5-8 hours to complete one ending.
    D. The game has poor dialog and plot: In comparison to what, Moby Dick? It's a game, and every line was made to be exactly like what it is; in a game. Not only that, but it has secrets revealing even more to the already spectacular plot, in a quantity comparable to the massive tower of hidden lore, FNAF

    So, um...

Undertale is good, alright? It's a good game!

From a first glance, Undertale looks like a mediocre jrpg. Through the first couple of hours, the only things that are reasonably engaging are the promise of drama ahead and witty humor for the time-being. But the game hints at having far more depth than anyone could've originally expected, and the world around the player is beautifully exposed as the plot progresses.

By the end of the game, the player has an entirely new understanding of the world that they worked their way through. They understand that actions have consequences, and that assuming Undertale should be played like other games (and specifically, other jrpgs) is a misconception. Depending on a final decision, the game may prompt the player to try again with a specific goal in mind.

And that's my favorite thing about Undertale. You're meant to try again. And when you go through the game again, while there is some repetition, you'll notice that things are different. There will be new characters, new dialogue, and the surroundings and world around you will be changed because of the different decisions that you've made. And you're not replaying the game, you're continuing with the playthrough that you've already done. The game remembers.

Good enough gameplay(nothing fantastic, but it's alright)

    Decent world building
    Great soundtrack
Good plot if slightly poorly explained sometimes
    Determination

But in the long run, for all the appreciation I can give this game, I fear it will not survive the hype. Its content is a little too short and its characters' charm, while very appreciable for the length of the game, would probably not survive a much longer game. They're not shallow, but they're clearly centered around their own personality tropes. Sans is the only one I think could survive a longer game since he keeps an aura of mystery. But Papyrus, Undyne, Toriel, Mettaton, they were all very well-concentrated characters, in the sense that each of their story arcs lasts about an hour or less and that they all give all that their personality can give for that length of time. But for longer, I don't think they'd stay interesting or all that fun for long.

The semi-meh gameplay doesn't really harm the game since it's at least a good deal challenging at the start, but it's nowhere near great. As for the visuals, they're simply ass. I find no redeeming qualities in it, not even the "retro" feel, and the animation work is particularly weak, except for the bosses where they indeed have a lot of personality.

Still, with a great music and a cast that did make me laugh and cry quite a lot, Undertale is a magnificent little piece of indie gaming. And even if you kick out the "indie" aspect, it's endearing enough and worked enough to make a lot of gamers reflect on gaming and enjoy a new style of gameplay and storytelling.

So… Where do I begin? I don’t really know. I think this task is, well, impossible. How do I do this game justice? What exactly can I say that will influence you as a reader to comprehend Undertale, and what the game is in its essence?
I do not know. I don’t even think I can. However, I am determined to make an attempt.

    The Story
Rarely have I ever played a game that cared so deeply about making your choices matter. Every step of the journey, every interaction and action towards other characters - it all influences the story. There are so many endings to Undertale depending on how you play the game that it’s actually somewhat… Well, hard to comprehend. The time invested into making every choice matter is astonishing and something to be admired. The attention to details is sublime, and at no point do the player find him- or herself lost in the plot. That said does not mean the game cannot frustrate or confuse you, because it does… But in all the right and completely new ways.
I’ll be honest with you, I can’t let go of this game’s story. I have had dreams about it for three nights in a row. If that doesn’t mean that this game got to me, I will never know what will. It’s rare that you find a game that grabs and emotionally invests you so heavily into its world and atmosphere. Undertale is one of those games. And the reason the storyline is so captivating is quite obvious…

    The Characters
I don’t think I’ve ever had more fun getting to know characters. Every single character you meet, from the main characters to minor roles and nameless NPC’s, are all introduced so incredibly well. With witty remarks and hilarious interactions, Undertale introduces characters fluently in a masterful fashion that is truly an art in itself. Humor is a strong factor throughout the entire game, but that doesn’t mean the game doesn’t take itself serious, because it certainly does. Not many games has as serious consequences as Undertale has. If you kill someone in the cleverly constructed turn-based combat system, there’s no going back. That character dies, and there’s no way to change it back. However, this again goes to show how deeply devoted this game is towards player choice. The player can go through the entire game without killing a single person, if he or she decides to do so. The power of the world is entirely in the hands of the player, and with it lies the fate of the characters as well.

    The World
With all the power invested with the player, Toby Fox serves the entire world of Undertale on a silver platter for you to do with as you please. But the world – and the game – reacts to the outcome you choose for it. One of the most interesting interactions is how the world and its characters truly resets, when you reset the game. The world of Undertale isn’t just a regular game world – it’s reality to its inhabitants. What you do is reflected. Resetting the game is no longer just a reset to play the game again: It whipes out every characters memory and resets it to square one. And if you do things differently, skip through dialogue like you know what they’re going to say, the characters become suspicious and act in a different way towards you. The game lives, so to speak. Yeah, I told you the game took itself seriously.
And that’s what’s so fascinating about Undertale. It’s not just another very brilliantly designed and incredibly atmospheric game. It has a soul. Undertale is a game with a soul. It is a living world in itself, a world that you alter to your wish, but also leaves you as a player responsible for your actions. Let it be known that I love this game and its characters and the world very dearly, but… I will not play it again, and I will tell you why.

The game is over for me. I ended it just the way I wanted it to. To me, the way I ended my playthrough, I wouldn’t want it any other way, and I wouldn’t want to reset the world or the characters. It’s perfect just the way it is, even though I already miss it, and so, I will leave you with these final words to attempt to fully grasp the essence of Undertale:

This is a serious game. This is a silly game.
This is a funny game. This is a scary game.
This game made me laugh. It made me cry.
It made me hate. It made me love.
It made me feel powerful, and yet I have never felt more powerless.
    But most of all…
This game filled me with determination, and I hope it will do so for you too.

Thank you for reading. And thank you Toby Fox, for this astonishing masterpiece of a game.

This is one of those magical experiences that we rarely see in this medium. By the end of Undertale, I had cried, I had laughed, I had got angry, I experienced every emotion through my many runs of this game.

The sparing and fighting system is not only an innovation, it is implemented so well throughout the story and the gameplay that, for once, my decisions actually have impact and weight throughout the whole game and make me weigh up the options for everything I do.

Even if Undertale didn't have the moral system, the characters are the most interesting, fleshed out and lovable creatures you will ever meet. It is just impossible not to love them through all of their quirks and witty dialogue. Never had I thought I would love two skeletons more than nearly every other character I have ever encountered in a game before.

EVEN IF Undertale didn't have the moral system or the interesting characters, the gameplay is so polished and well thought out for an RPG that if future RPG's don't take inspiration from Undertale I will be surprised. Adding Bullet hell and Paper Mario elements to the battle system makes every single encounter, unique, fun, engaging, all the words you can think of, as they never do the same thing twice, each boss battle mixes up the formula, changes how you play in a way that you won't expect. This makes RPG random encounters fun, excited and not ever feel like a grind. I know. They did the impossible.

EVEN IF Undertale didn't have the moral system, the brilliant characters and the innovative gameplay, Undertale would still have a stellar story, brilliant enemies and bosses, the best soundtrack of the year, one of the funniest games ever and would definitely be an above average standard turn based RPG on its own.

Frankly, combining the best bits of Earthbound, Paper Mario, Final Fantasy VI and crafting a wonderful experience with so much love and care, it would be hard not to create something magical. I refuse to spoil anything for anyone and Encourage everyone to play the game at least 3 times. This is the greatest experience you will have this year and is an outstanding example of Video games being an art form.

This is 100% game of the year even compared to the Witcher 3 and Fallout 4.

I have given this game a two month cool down period to see if it was still hype. I can confirm it is not. I love this game with all of my heart and It is one of my favourites of all time.

Thank you Toby Fox. Everyone please. Play this game.

Whether you kill everyone or no one gives you an entirely different gameplay experience. This doubles the length of the game, which allows it to have a decent length.

The graphics have that nice retro feel, the story is amazing, the cast of characters is superb, and the gameplay is good and unique for a turn-based RPG. All of this, made on a budget that could at the most buy a ham sandwich. Truly a testament that money does not create a perfect game.

I feel like Undertale is such a game, while nothing entirely new it presents a fresh set of mechanics and ties them together in a unique way while telling a story that's compfortable somewhere between Earthbound and My Little Pony. And let's be entirely honest here, if someone had asked be if that could work out, i would had lughed at him then got a cup of tea to spat it in the persons face and then laughed some more. But in the end, Undertale turned out to remain in my personal Top list of RPGs right next to Chrono Trigger and Secret of Evermore. And that's quite something to archive out of nowhere.

Undertale can give you quite a few of different experiences. It can either be a joyful comedy or get dark pretty fast. If you can get over the retro graphics and you're into the things mentioned above, then this game might be for you.

The battles, such as they are, combine some of my favorite features of both the Mother and Shin Megami games (chatting, rather than just immediately brawling, with humorously designed weirdos and outcasts).

The game's key selling point is its gentle kindheartedness. It has a sort of quirky sentimentality that it earns through your interactions with the bizarre denizens of the game world, but which is also buffeted by the beautiful soundtrack and soft, simple visuals. There is also the general goofiness, which I wouldn't say is side-splitting hilarity, but which made me smile and just generally feel good. I'd recommend this game to fans of Studio Ghibli and the Mother series, but try it yourself of course (as with anything, liking one does not necessitate liking the others). For what it's worth, I thought this game was touching, memorable, and a lot of fun to play through.

I know I'll be getting MGSV and Fallout 4 before the end of the year, and I have no doubts that Xenoblade Chronicles X will wow me, but I'm overjoyed that I spent a weekend with this beautiful little gem that I'll no doubt return to time and again.

After playing through the game 4 times now, I can safely say Undertale exceeded any and all expectations.

Everyone else has complimented the writing, and I agree; it's simultaneously hilarious (I can't remember the last time a game's made me physically laugh time and time again), and emotionally devastating when it needs to be. There are even elements of horror sprinkled in, so much so that the game's directly led to my very own Undertale-inspired nightmares. Everyone else has complimented the music, and again, I agree. A blending of chip tunes, synth, and acoustic instruments, developer toby fox has created an absolutely delightful soundtrack that's worth a repeat (or 20, in my case). If you like to listen to video game soundtracks on your own time, I HIGHLY recommend the game+soundtrack bundle. It's worth every penny.

Every aspect of Undertale feels as though it's been polished to a meticulous degree. However, the one aspect of the game that should be highlighted the most is toby fox's stupidly over-the-top attention to detail. Morality in games has always been fickle. Even in games like Until Dawn, where the concept of every action unavoidably causing a major change in story/outcome is ham-fisted to the player from the very start, almost all fall short of actually delivering upon the promise of meaningful choices. In my opinion, this is where Undertale shines the strongest.

Every single action you take in the game makes a lasting impact on characters' dialogue, and ultimately, on how the story ends. Already, people have documented dozens upon dozens of alternate endings, depending on who you kill, and who you choose to spare (Undertale's main selling feature). Even choices you make as a player - saving, dying in battle, resetting from a checkpoint, etc. - every action is observed by the game, and consistently alters the way characters interact with you.

There's no other experience out there like Undertale. The heartfelt/mind-destroying story, the brilliant storytelling, the vibrant soundtrack, and even the simple visuals - which manage to still impress, ESPECIALLY later on in the game - combine with this attention to detail to serve as my personal GOTY. You owe it to yourself to play Undertale.

Let's start off with: This game was meant strongly for the story and characters and isn't meant for everyone.

I've read all the "bad" reviews, both logical and both just pure hate with no reason. I'm not an extreme fanboy with no reason behind my love for Undertale. I have my reasons and here is my very detailed assessment.

In Undertale, there's no interestingly fun wall jumping mechanics like what you'd find in Super Meat Boy. There's no mind bending puzzles that keep you addicted and playing a lot like Portal 2. There's no blinding lens flare or graphics that can let you see each individual atom in this game like in DriveClub or Battlefield 4 that makes you feel like you're in real life. The reason for this is that these features were never the priority in Undertale.

Many people are unable to realise that the lack of these features are part of what made the game so hyped and so well recognised in the first place. Instead of trying to be like every other successful AAA title just by following their footsteps and being overshadowed in the end, Undertale takes a completely different path to stand out so that there's nothing to become overshadowed by. People see Undertale up with the AAA titles and they tell themselves that it has to be special.

Graphics-wise. This is disregarded completely. Nostalgia isn't the only reason why the game has an old-school (or as the haters would call it, s***ty graphics) look to it. It's because it's simple, works and won't distract you from the story which is what the game was meant for. The game wants you to read its dialog and immerse yourself into the game. Instead of mimicking the real world we live in, it wants you to pretend you're inside the world of Undertale. Toby Fox has written a meticulous story and crafted a world littered with very memorable characters with different personalities. You can only fully appreciate this when you try to explore and fully complete the game twice. He wants you to listen to, weep to, laugh to, smile to and relate to the amazing story he has in return for the $9.99 you've paid for Undertale. He put the NES graphics not only because it gave a nostalgic feel for those who can actually feel it, but when it comes to those who can't, they would focus on the story and dialog rather than be immersed in the graphics.

To those who gave this game a 0 saying it didn't make you heartfelt at all. Either you:

A - Legitimately didn't in the sections of the game that tried to tinker with your emotions.
B - You tried to feel heartfelt from the totally wrong sections of the game.
C - You judged the game too early and never even tried to play the game the way it was meant to be played.

Hand over heart, I've genuinely shed tears during the true ending because it was actually relatable. The game's soundtrack enhanced the effect.

    From the gameplay standpoint:

People complain that the combat mechanic is boring and repetitive. People who say this don't understand how games work. Don't tell me shooting soldiers in COD, Battlefield and all war games is not repetitive. Don't tell me slaying zombies again and again in L4D2 isn't repetitive. Don't tell me random murder on the streets and drug dealing is not repetitive. Don't tell me going in tall grass in Pokemon and having to battle random Pokemon every single time isn't repetitive. The game is repetitive, no arguing about that BUT, Undertale manages to pull off this repetition very well

Why Undertale is so special in this aspect is WHAT happens within combat and NOT THE COMBAT ITSELF. When battling an opponent, you either kill the opponent and move on or you have to choose a series of "acts" where you sort of try to connect with the opponent to a point where they no longer want to fight. Read the dialog when you do this; soak it in and not just spam the skip button or you'll end up misjudging what was so intricately set up just for your money in the first place. Bloody hell, there's even a frog somewhere in the beginning that breaks the fourth wall, complaining about how he feels sad about people skipping a game's dialog. If you listen to it, he's happy and tells you that you're kind. Skip the frog's dialog and he labels you the same as the rest who doesn't appreciate the dialog written for the player. Toby Fox knows the kind of people who play his game.

Why am I giving this a 10? Because it's refreshing. People label this as a hipster game for it's pixelated graphics. I admit, I personally play and enjoy the AAA titles especially Battlefield 4 which to me, has excellent gameplay. But the reason why Undertale gets a 10 from me is because I've taken the time to play the game thoroughly and it perfectly fulfills not the gameplay aspect, but the experience and the story. It's brought funny moments and sad moments. Toby Fox has written the game's story so well and put so much effort into it that I personally believe that this game, while not the best in everything, deserves to be where it is now; up there.

I don't ever remember being this satisfied from a game I've purchased. I highly regret not being a part of Undertale's original Kick Starter.

Many of the people who love Undertale will find it tickles their nostalgia bone just as much geek culture.

Pros: The game content is mostly balanced. Most of the difficulty in the game comes from intentionally wanting to have a bad time with it. Most of the game can be played in a single play-through, with additional endings available after completing the game once.

Negatives: Some jokes waste too much time to get to the punchline, the game also hasn't learned from some of the most hated mechanics that have been abandoned in newer games (eg invisible random battles, long cutscenes that can't be skipped, and "dead end"'s caused by early mistakes.)

That said the negatives are small enough to not make players want to quit the game. Most of the negative information about the games comes players expecting Earthbound and getting something more punishing like Mario+Luigi defending actions if it were a danmaku (bullethell) game.

When I first saw this game, it looked interesting, but It didn't look ten out of ten worth. I thought that the spare or kill mechanic was just a useless gimmick, but it was an interesting idea, and I eventually decided to buy the game.

Oh, I was so wrong. This game blew my mind. All of the characters are so memorable, and they all feel so real. On my first run, I killed a few important characters, and I regretted that decision as time went on. Killing important characters drastically changes the game, but that wasn't the real reason I regretted taking these character's digital lives. The real reason was, I legitimately cared for the characters.

So, on my second run, not only did Flowey (A Character you meet at the beginning of the game) dare me to kill no one, but I also dared myself. This lead to the "True Pacifist" Ending, in which brought so many different emotions. Real emotion. I don't want to say too much though, because this game is best experienced not knowing much.

I have recently done a "Genocide" run, in which you kill everything. You actually kill so many monsters, that you can't get random encounters anymore. It felt horrible killing these characters. The weird unsettling way the protagonist acted just added to this horrible feeling. As you kill, NPCs begin to disappear from towns, which just has this overall lonely tone. In contrast to the "Pacifist" Run, where there is humor oozing out of the walls, and all the characters act and feel like real friends; the "Genocide" Run is like a different game.

As for the other stuff, the music is gorgeous, and while the gameplay itself is really simplistic, it is still both fun and interesting. The multiple endings are really amazing as well. The writing is some of the best writing I have seen in my entire life. The humor is great too, although it is a very quirky humor, so some may not appreciate it as much as others.

The characters, and writing and where the game excels. Humorous, or should I say Humerus, quirky jokes, with great characters that are memorable and evoke real emotion. There are two characters I have to talk about though, and those characters are, Sans and Papyrus. I know for a fact, that I will never forget them in a million years, because not only do they cause the most laughs throughout the game, but they feel like real friends. There are so many things that make them memorable, Papyrus is a spaghetti fanatic, Sans eats ketchup, Papyrus says "Nyeh heh heh" a lot, Sans says the worst puns ever, which funnily enough makes them the best puns ever, and so much more. I don't want to say anymore though, meeting these characters without knowing their best traits makes it a great experience.

With the price of $10 on Steam, you just have to buy this game. I am not going to forget this game, and neither will you.

Both pacifist and "genocide" routes have good stories (and actually very different stories), but pacifist is easier for a first timer, which you'll want as it's a moderately difficult game. If you find yourself unable to complete the game due to difficulty, look up how to get temmie armor (looking that up may contain minor non-story spoilers).

Nearly every character you come across actually has a story behind them you can find at some point in the game (although you have to dig for some of them).

The characters are very characterized by their traits and its interesting to see how they react to your actions once you commit them. The replay-ability of this one is overwhelming because the game tracks EVERY INDIVIDUAL PLAY THROUGH you make, characters will remember what you've done in earlier runs. If there's criticism to be with the game there's very little of it because overall this game is a near perfect title. Overall i recommend HIGHLY you get this game if your interested into rpgs because this one is worth your time. Expand

Thank you, tobyfox, for a wonderful, expertly-told single-player adventure of a masterpiece. Never have I ever cared about a game's characters like I did with Undertale. I genuinely was sad when I completed the game. Resetting will never be so painful and only a fool with no "SOUL" would do it without a question.

In a time where singleplayer games are left out in the dust, this game spits in the face in that train-of-thought and throws it out to rot. Buy Undertale. Now. Do it. You won't regret it.

Great game with an excellent soundtrack. Bullet hell style battles are a little too hard though. The writign was funny and creative and the game changes dramatically based on how you play. 10/10

I believe it's a great game. An emotionally touching, warm game that makes you smile. The people giving it 0's and bashing it, are people who have never played it. They are whiny children going against something that's popular because they can. They want to be edgy hipsters. Let them be just that. Don't let the retro graphics and indie packaging fool you. Many a kickstarter indie game have come, many have passed, and this is not one of them. Although it can be maybe a bit too simple at times, it really does have what you need to have an enjoyable, fun experience.

It's better than Earthbound, which has a lot of grind and the jokes get a bit boring (and then the game is a bit weird at the end - still like Earthbound though). In Undertale, the makers continually screw with you and your expectations built from the history of RPGs, which is awesome. I couldn't try playing another MMO without thinking about this game.

The negatives seem to be about simple puzzles - they miss the point - the puzzles were just a navigation, a way point. This is not a game about nostalgia but about challenging your expectations. In a way, your game play will also give you a reflection of yourself. Other negs: the trailer tells you a superficial (but necessarily superficial) view of the game. The graphics are simple, but you get used to them. A good book is not based on its typeface, and a good game shouldn't be based on graphics.

This game combines the lovable atmosphere of Earthbound with the "Total Kills equals Different Outcomes" Mechanic of Dishonored. At its base its another RPG but with numerous outcomes and a very entertaining combat system the game makes you want to play this game over and over trying to unravel it's secrets.

I have never been so emotionally invested in a game before. There are so many things that drew me in. The story, the characters, and the music mostly. I have also never loved a game soundtrack as much as I love this one. I love that this game can be played over and over with different results. I think everyone should give Undertale a try!

With multiple endings based on how you choose to play out your run, set pieces that can play out very differently based on your actions and so many incredible moments that we’d love to share but daren’t do so for risk of spoiling anything, Undertale is easily one of the indie standouts of last year.

Through a combination of often relaxed but sometimes tense gameplay, a dreamy atmosphere, and genuine characters that feel like they’re actually alive and all living together in this isolated society of longing, Undertale transcends its medium and becomes a genuinely moving experience I would recommend to anyone who is open to a sometimes sorrowful, sometimes hilarious, always bizarre and engaging emotional journey.
