  • Summary: Tyrant's Realm is a roguelite action-adventure inspired by classic PS1 visuals. Explore procedurally generated dark fantasy worlds, battling through dangers that evolve with each run. Death is not the end, as the night is still young.

Tyrant's Realm is a roguelite with a – rather intangible – soulslike feel that aims to combine high difficulty with progression tied exclusively to equipment. Combat is essential: no jumping, only slow or fast attacks, dodges and parries by splitting milliseconds. The procedurally generated levels offer little variation, but all in all they are compelling, as are the boss battles. There is no storyline worth following, and the entire production is simplified compared to the major representatives of the genres from which it is derived. If you're looking for an immediate, no-frills experience, you might enjoy it; otherwise, it is likely to prove repetitive.

Tyrant's Realm is clearly a passion project made by people who were molded by both the PS1 era and FromSoftware's magnum opus. As mentioned at the start, I'm not a fan of Soulslike titles, but this one managed to win me over in record time. Affordable and stylish, it offers a fair amount of challenge without being overwhelming to newcomers, and its roguelite elements serve as carrots on a stick to make even the most discerning player prep for "just one more run."

With a satisfying and strategic combat system inspired by Dark Souls and Dead Cells, Tyrant’s Realm delivers an engaging experience despite its limited enemy variety and lack of meaningful difficulty scaling. The bosses are visually and mechanically unique but too easy, and while the progression system encourages experimentation, the lack of content makes optimal builds too predictable.

Ultimately, Tyrant’s Realm executes a gameplay loop that’s rewarding enough to render its minor inconveniences just that — minor inconveniences. It’s another successful, joyful genre-mashup that anyone looking for a retro-inspired soulslike will have a good time with.

Tyrant’s Realm charms with its PS1-inspired visuals and creative level design but falls short on challenge and polish. The combat and boss battles show promise, but a lack of difficulty and clunky elements like the HUD hold it back. Fun for a nostalgic dungeon crawl, but not a true Soulslike contender.
