  • Summary: The year is 2205. "History Revisionists" began attacking the past to change history. In order to stop them, the Government of the Time appointed the "Saniwa" with protecting history.

    Saniwa can awaken tsukumogami (tools with spirits), the Touken Danshi. They travel through time and seek to defeat the History Retrograde Army (HRA) who seek to alter history.

    After a fierce battle, the Touken Danshi managed to overcome the HRA, but the Honmaru was greatly damaged, weakening their military strength. In addition, in the midst of the battle, the Saniwa, who is vital to the Honmaru, disappeared.

    By drifting through the time axis, they somehow managed to hide the Saniwa-less Honmaru, but there was nothing else they could do. The remaining fifteen blades lived quietly, holding on to the melody in their hearts and waiting for the right moment to come.

    A beautiful spring with cherry blossoms in bloom. Once again, the HRA stealthily approaches the Honmaru while it is still adrift. But then Konnosuke appears, appointed by the Government of the Time to deliver a mission referred to as an "onslaught investigation".

    With this last hope, Mikazuki Munechika and the other Touken Danshi embark on a lengthy battle.

    In a whole new 3D world, Touken Ranbu Warriors is more expressive than the original game. The numerous mini-theaters of socializing dialogues can satiate players' penchant for coupling and make the look of "Touken Men" more vivid. Set in the Warring States Period, the main story allows the "Touken Men" to meet their former masters and engage in amusing conversions, but the story on the whole seems mediocre. The substantially simplified Touken combat style allows the players not adept at action games to enjoy the fun, but this also makes the combats lacking in playability. The highly repetitive levels and lack of characters differentiation make the gaming experience very tedious.

    The fundamentals of Touken Ranbu Warriors are fine. Great controls, a good variety of playable characters, and the bite-sized missions are a nice change of pace. Also, after Samurai Warrriors 5 it’s refreshing to see a game that doesn’t treat Nobunaga Oda like a misunderstood saint. The story doesn’t impress, though, and despite how intriguingly bonkers the premise is, the experience never manages to rise above being a perfectly serviceable musou.

    Touken Ranbu Warriors is too schematic within its Musou core, with tiny levels and excessively easy gameplay. But you can appreciate the story, a lot of diverse characters, a lot of upgrades and a few mini-games.
