    The "Medieval Viking Invasion" vibes are strong in this one. A good piece of DLC: doesn't offer too much new content but it's cheap for what it offers. And the foundations are as solid as ever.

    Excellent add-on brings not only new historical era, but also actual changes in gameplay. Someone will be discouraged by a relatively small campaign map, but the game makes it up with smarter AI, greater focus on diplomacy and more balanced overall experience - thanks to a more compact map.

    Age of Charlemagne is a great way to improve on a Total War engine that sorely needed extra testing and bug-cleaning. Tight, attractive and challenging, it's the perfect way to prepare for the upcoming Total War: Warhammer but also a good DLC in its own right.

    If you like "Total War", you can't walk past it.

    There were great times and not so great for the "Total War" games, but "Total War: Rome    If you like "Total War", you can't walk past it.

    There were great times and not so great for the "Total War" games, but "Total War: Rome II" and "Total War: ATTILA - Age of Charlemagne" show that they still can do good games. Not as good as the first Rome, but still. Only if they made the games work properly right from the start, not after a year after release.

    The main con is a weak AI. But where can you find better ones? Only in mods. Hope some day they will realise that if modders can make AI stronger, they can do too.

    Also the work with the game is not completely finished. But even this unfinished one is a good one. Shame on them, that they stopped working on it. Still the one important thing, one of the most - atmosphere of Age of Charlemagne is present in the game.    … Expand

    probably the best dlc ever created for Attila/ Rome 2. Each campaign feels fleshed out and unique. Art style is incredible for unit cards and overall display. Campaign map very detailed though I wish the Byzantine Empire were included.

    Cons
    Could use new medieval music, unit diversity, and settlements are same as Attila and feel out of place sometimes. Also same drawbacks of Attila still prevalent ie no population, illogical trade only between capitals. Also the game seems to be incredibly easy on both the campaign and battle side and there is very little late or even mid game challenge.

    Overall, as good of a dlc as could be made with restrictions of current iteration of engine. Would recommend.    … Expand

Steam reviews more accurately reflect the state of it. The DLC is not fleshed out at all. All of the factions have all of the same starting units, and there is almost no variety later in the game. The main faction, Charlemagne's, suffers such incredible penalties to integrity and morale that you have to decimate your armies every turn (kill 1/10th so they don't rebel), and even if they do go into battle, you have to severely outnumber the enemy because your units will begin to route as soon as they enter combat (even if you send two spear levies against one enemy spear band). The map is reduced in size from the original game, most of the factions are copypastas of Germanic factions from the base game, only with reduced unit variety. It's a generally inferior version of the base game, and since you need to own the base game to play this, I am rating it based on whether it improves on or detracts from the base game. Check out the mods for the base game instead.… Expand
