I love these kinds of games, but the Tomb Raider has really gotten a lot of bugs this time, and that's not cool. When I wanted to try again in 2020, the result made me sad, the bugs were still not fixed. But still, the story is very good and the graphics are still sufficient.

I really liked exploring the environments and finding all the hidden items and improving your equipment and skills, however I would of liked the skill tree to have more meaningful choices (the amount of unlocks required to unlock the next tier of skills means you will get pretty much be getting everything anyway). The story has it's ups and it's downs. Discovering what happened on the island is quite interesting, and is told through the environment, enemies, and diaries, however your cadre of multicultural stereotypes that represent Lara's companions is probably the weakest link as it doesn't ever give you a reason to care for them, and luckily they are a very small portion of the narrative. Overall the game is quite good, and I feel it was worth my money. Expand

In this newer installment of Tomb raider series, we follow the young Lara's first adventure which starts her career as a treasure hunter.

Story-wise, I think this game's content is quite confusing sometime. Unlike Nolan's Batman Begins in which Bruce Wayne became a fighter after years' training, Lara 's growth from a naive college student to an expert adventurer is so quick that it makes little sense. I think the developers made the main story first then attached a origin story of Lara on it as a selling point. To me, it would be better making it just another story of Lara, but the stunt of "origin story" may attract larger audience.

The strong aspect of the game is the presentation. This time, Tomb Raider completely abandoned the old gameplay formula and is more akin to Uncharted and Batman Arkham series, but the result, I have to say, is fluent and beautiful. It has none of the movement or camera problems from previous games and everything moves fluidly. The gameplay is great too. Tomb Raider introduced new ways of fighting enemies: covered gun-fighting, stealth killing, and sneaking which eventually makes the game very pleasant to play.

Overall it's still a great action/adventure game with believable world and characters except for Lara's unbelievable transform. I will certainly recommend this game.

What's keeping it from being perfect:
    - overused QTEs in the first hour of the game,
    - lack of replay value: story is the main point of this game, once you know it and done all the puzzles it's really no point in playing it again,
    - lack of difficulty even on Hard mode, after the first hour you pretty much steamroll everyone as you go,
    - they confuse Lara Croft with John Rambo at times, you are supposed to kill dozens of enemies in a single area, wave after wave (and it's hilariously easy even on Hard),
    - not enough stealth elements (they seem to prefer the guns blazing approach).

In the end, it's 10-15 hours of a really well done game and by all means worth the 15-20$ price tag on sale these days.

This game exceeded my expectations! From the story to the gameplay (which reinforces the story), I was (or am, as I have not finished the game yet, but close!) captured into the journey and the struggle that is Lara's plight.

This game really took me back to TR 1, 2, and 3, which I loved so much, but it is definitely its own game and no real comparison can be made between old and new.

    STORY

The story is really "survival", first her own, then everyone elses'. The quicktime elements forces me to make snap movements/judgements, it forces me to be on edge, it forces me to wonder "what's around the corner", and that is exactly what Lara is feeling. These quicktime elements do an excellent job of connecting the gamer to the character.

Of course, Lara is pleasantly fleshed out a s a character, but no one else is as she spends 99% of her time alone. So when people die, the gamer doesn't care. Its hard to make the gamer care when there isn't a chance to get to know the other characters, so I am not sure what the developer could have done to assist. They tried leaving books around, and some video, but that wasn't enough to connect. Perhaps if we got to play Lara before the crash.

    GAMEPLAY

Lara is motivated to survive, and this is believable. There are no strange quests that have you bringing something useless to someone else, its all just centered around getting things done to live. Which makes sense.

Gaining experience and having loot/salvage is also useful, so looking for boxes/items is valuable and also believable.

The controls for the PC were easy to learn and I had no issues with my keys.

Lara's clothes actually deteriorate though the game, which actually makes sense since she's battered ALL the time. I like that she's wearing full pants and two tanks, rather than short-shorts.

    TOMBS

This is where I have my biggest beef. Its hard not to compare to previous games, it really is hard and as I said in the beginning, one should NOT make the comparison.. but the thing is called Tomb Raider, so.. here goes:

The tomb puzzles are not puzzles. They are really easy "walkthroughs". Like.. lame easy. flick a switch and you've discovered the solution.

I'm not sure what happened here. Did the developer think we (the audience) were 10 years old? or that we thought like them? Not sure. The tombs are almost useless (if it wasn't for the experience and the salvage). I'm only going through them now to confirm that they are all indeed that easy.

Oddly enough, the hardest one I encountered was at the beginning with the plane.

    VOICE ACTING

I think Lara Croft's VA did a great job in conveying pain, sadness and anger through the many different avenues that Lara communicates with the world.

    UPGRADING SKILLZ

I wanted more from this, since I reached a point in the game that adding a skill didn't do much for Lara; though updating weapons did.

    CONCLUSION

What surprised me about the game was the believable survival aspect of the game and how the gameplay reinforced that story, along with Lara's journey from innocent to survivor.

I enjoyed the stealth side as well as the direct attack sequences, and I think I may always remember ziplining through the beautiful backdrops of the game.

Even though Tomb Raider can't seem to make up its mind on what kind of game it wants to be, it remains the kind of game that kept me up way too late night after night (and not because of Lara's chest), so it's at the very least a good one.

The combat system isn't terrible but neither is it terribly unique. Minus the bow combat, I could boot up Max Payne 3 for something significantly

The combat system isn't terrible but neither is it terribly unique. Minus the bow combat, I could boot up Max Payne 3 for something significantly better. The stealth events are much more interesting, allowing you to slowly pick off your enemies from afar or up close. This carries a great deal of the gameplay, but it feels much more linear and carried than a game like Dishonored, which will drop you off in a sandbox filled with your soon-to-be-victims and a variety of ways with which to dispatch them or letting you sneak past them entirely. With this game, you're given a few interesting options and pretty much have to massacre everyone in your way to get by most of the time.

The game is at its strongest when you're climbing, swinging, and exploding your way through the environment. Movement in the game really is quite enjoyable, when it occurs, but that brings me to my next point. Raiding tombs is not a highlight of the main story rather, it is offered as an auxilliary objective (which you should nab at every possible opportunity). It's disappointing that in a game whose name very clearly implies the desecration of sacred burial ground, you will only really be doing so when you have time to take a break from generic third-person-shooter action. Instead of offering a plethora of crypts full of railings, walls, and ropes with which to make our way about, most of these aspects are placed in the outside world where I really don't feel like they fulfill their potential. So, odd as it is to say, don't buy this game if your hopes are firmly set on it fulfilling its name. Other side objectives include finding relics complete with information about their usage in history and salvage which can be used to upgrade weapons, alongside a skill point system that lets you customize Lara's abilities to some extent.

The game's biggest offenses come in the form of quick-time-events and overly cinematic gameplay. I love a good movie, but not when I expect it to be a game, and the first couple of hours are chock full of "Press F to not die" scenarios and other varieties of "gameplay" which serves as little more than a reason to keep your attention focused on the game. I'm okay with a few QTEs in, for example, climbing, where it feels like part of the movement and not a cheap excuse for gameplay mechanics, but the majority of this game's QTEs are just unnecessary and annoying.

    **Minor spoilers follow**

Tomb Raider was advertised as a story about survival, which it definitely is for the first two or three hours. After that, all that remains of the idea of "survival" are a few questionably useful skills. For example, the first time you kill someone, Lara reacts as any humane person might with disgust, shock, and fear. Literally less than two minutes later you are gunning down small groups of men like a cold assassin, and not three hours later you're taking out rooms full of them. It really tears apart the survival theme that the developer was trying to push and doing a fairly good job of, QTEs aside during the first part of the game. It doesn't feel like a story about survival and adaptation, just a story about a woman who fights to survive until she gets her first taste of blood before becoming completely feral.

Taking over from the story about survival is the story about constantly finding your friends while fighting through an endless army of savages who theoretically all washed up here on crashed vehicles because there aren't any women on that island. Then it takes a somewhat jarring twist towards the supernatural because, Tomb Raider and it sort of feels like the gameplay it just doesn't know what it wants to be.

As it turns out this new Lara has a few tricks of her own and I can say I had more furn with the new Tomb Raider than I had with the Uncharted 3. It is basically the same shooting/climbing formula, but with a few twists: What I admire about the new TR the most is how it often isn't really linear at all. At several places you get this rather big area filled with collectibles to find, even the linear sections have their small share of detours and dead ends with some kind of reward to be found there. Lara occasionaly returns into some of those big locations with new gear that opens previously sealed paths, Zelda-style. Combat is where older Uncharted games come off better, but that does not mean firefights in TR are bad. Just a bit less polished. You won't really be able to stealth/bow your way through the enemy, but to some extent this is always a possibility and even in open firefight the bow is still quite handy against a smaller group of enemies. From all the bow-enhanced games that came out lately, TR seems to handle it the best. Graphics are pretty great, too bad that after all those patches and driver updates I still can't afford to run the tessaltion unless I'd fancy me some glitches and crashes now and then. It is really a shame for this is probably the first time I found it worth having tesselation turned on. On the bad side of things, characters aren't likeable at all, story might as well be nonexistent and the way devs torture Lara throughout the game is just plain sick. Regarding the "rape" scene how the can anyone see a rape attempt in that, unless they have a fetish for strangling or suffocation?! Leveling-up is a nice addition, same goes for weapon upgrading, though I'd wish for a bit more realistic approach to this. Puzzles are simple and short and I am perfectly fine with that. Overall great easy fun game hindered by lame characters and dull story. Expand

Thanks to the ridiculously good visuals, sound, and voice acting I was able to immerse myself into the story and enjoy the action-packed ride. The story itself isn't anything special, but it's good enough. Combat is fluid. QTEs aren't my preferred gameplay mechanic, but they're well done. Exploration is satisfying and rewarding, though I could have done with less hand-holding as far as discovering tombs and items is concerned. I don't feel compelled to 100% most games, but I feel like this is one where it would actually be fun to do. Crystal Dynamics seem to have learned that because Tomb Raider used to be a game that could be played by everyone, especially children. With the insane amount of blood, point blank execution finishers and explicit depictions of Lara's body parts being pierced and cut off by various environmental hazards this game is the first Tomb Raider that clearly deserves a "Mature" (18+) ESRB rating. Even with the acknowledgment that the game's sole purpose is to explain Lara's transformation from an innocent, young and inexperienced girl to someone who could actually pull a trigger on another human being there is no justification for turning her into a blood-thirsty killing machine. So, what should we expect in the game's sequel? Tactical nuclear strikes and kill streaks?

That being said Tomb Raider is a rather enjoyable game. The environments are simply amazing especially on higher graphics settings which have a tendency of making the player stop for a moment and simply enjoy the view. Its clearly visible that game designers spent a lot of time polishing small details which add up to the immersion factor. The audio component is sadly a mixed bag. While some of the voice actors did a really god job the extremely forced accent of Lara Croft (played by Camilla Luddington) is simply annoying. Compared to Judith Gibbins and Keeley Hawes, which voice-acted Croft before, Luddington simply sounds forced and unnatural. The soundtrack also leaves much to desire because compared to, lets say, masterpieces from the "Underworld" OST like "Thor's Room" or themes played during Thailand levels the new Tomb Raider soundtrack sounds simply bland and uninspiring clearly trying only to promote the new main theme. Controls feel okay but there are times when they are clearly too vivid and unpredictable resulting in a lot of unintentional deaths. Combined with the fact that Lara now does a lot of things by herself like crouching (there is no dedicated control for crouch) and reducing her speed when traversing stuff like narrow passages and tombs (there is no dedicated control for sprint)... Well it can be pretty annoying to say the least.

Now we come to the most problematic stuff about the game cinematics and QTE (quick time events). This game is choke full of both! There can hardly pass more than a minute or two in the game without being forced to watch a cinematic or bash the controls like crazy to finish a QTE. At one time I even managed to count FOUR successive cinematics which followed each other! QTEs are a tale for themselves. It really boggles my mind how could anyone ever come to the conclusion that they would be a good way of immersing players into the gameplay. Having a ton of split-second QTEs is probably not a problem on consoles where every button has a specific color so its easier to follow them but when you get less than a second to read stuff like "Press RMOUSE LMOUSE repeatedly" on a PC then that's a real problem.

There is also something to be said about the very anti-climatic ending but venturing onto that ground would probably mean divulging a lot of spoilers so I'll just leave it be. Tomb Raider is a very good game which could have been a lot better if some of the mainstream gaming elements were left out. I just hope that for the inevitable sequel developers decide to tone down those elements and simply get more in touch with the spirit of the previous games by expanding on adventure and exploring. From me personally Tomb Raider gets an 8/10 with a note of letting a lot of things simply slide.

The graphics are above average and the animations are okay, except that there are numerous clipping issues on Lara's basic movements, which is unacceptable. The sounds, music, effects and everything like that are good. The combat is a pretty average, really nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done. The involvement with the environment, and the development of Lara throughout the game is masterfully done. Lara's image will change from a pristine looking young lady in the beginning of the game to a rugged, experienced explorer in the end. Though, Lara herself is also one of the biggest flaws in the game. She just isn't believable at all. This is the problem with strong female protagonists. Females just don't have the physical strength or athleticism to make the actions Lara does believable. I mean, especially for an archaeologist who clearly has never done strength training to be able to pull herself up constantly is just laughable. And the terrible tacked on MP modes. Seriously, not every game needs multiplayer and Tomb Raider is yet another example of a game that would have highly benefited from having no MP mode at all. But on to the biggest problem with the game: The quick time events. My God, they are everywhere. I died more times because i missed a quick time event than I did in all other parts of the game combined. It's pathetic. Why do developers think that quick time events are fun? At the end of the game, right before the credits, it says "We have made the best game we possibly can" If your best game is this riddled with quick time events then someone needs to be fired. Honestly, it's embarrassing. I know it seems like a I ranted about a lot for a score of 8/10. But despite all of these flaws, I really did enjoy Tomb Raider more than most games. Expand

The fighting isn't great enemies are as lethal as a hippie feather duster and have heads the size of flying saucers, but the combat sequences are short enough that it doesn't get in the way of main gameplay.

The action scenes are great buildings collapsing all around you whilst dodging flying dbris pretty regularly, but again not so much as to get samey.

The cut scenes tell a good story, although I did get a bit fed up with occasionally having to randomly press a button at a specific point for little apparent reason.

Not perfect then, but an enjoyable little romp. Well worth 20 quid anyway; I had fun with this game.

But some of the action was just breathtaking with storms, fires, tens of bad guys shooting fire arrows from all sides, and whatnot. I loved the art direction, the stuns, the enviroments, clothing, enemy design, etc.

As any TR game there was a lot of action and it was executed very well. I liked the shooting part of the game, the bow, the gun feel. It could of been a bit slower imo and also there doesnt need to be so much ammo lying everywhere, I might have run out of ammo maybe 2 times on medium on 1 gun only. For a survival game that is not very realistic.

The puzzles were pretty good but not too hard, and with survival sense it is very clear what you need to do at all times. There were a few cool puzzles but they were buried deep in optional tombs. And this is the only downside of the game is that I wish the puzzles were a little bit harder, not like the first and second part where it can take you a day to figure just one puzzle out but still There also were pretty much no traps and clever tomb designs... you know typical adventure stuff like arrows from walls, falling celing if you step on the wrong stone, swinging axes, etc.

The story is pretty gripping helped by the great henchmen designs altough it is too much like Far Cry but I guess they did develop the games simultaniously so I doubt they plagiarized. The actor that played Croft was pretty stellar, and also very hot, and the voiceovers were actually quite good.

Overall, I feel the game was an 8 with points being deducted for some gfx hiccups here and ther, as well as abundance of ammo that made the fighting a bit too easy. Lack of complex puzzles, and any kind of environment contraptions was also a bit disappointing seeing this is a TOMB raider game after all. Bearing all this in mind, the puzzles that are in there are rather good, the art direction is top notch, the fighting is fast and fluid, and it is all held together by a good story, acting, and voice overs. Overall I say buy this and have yourself some fun.

However, the extensive use of QTEs (Quick Time Events making the player press specific buttons at specific times in order to progress through what would otherwise be a cut scene) detracts a little from the overall game experience. There are, unfortunately, more of these towards the start of the game (and the end) and that could put people off; the intention, though, is to help train you to recognise when to react to these QTEs in preparation for the rest of the game, so please persevere. If you really can't see past these then you may not enjoy the game as much, but it is so worth it imho. Also, the restart points are perfecting placed and you will not curse too much if you do die, which makes the QTEs more bearable. I would have liked to see more tomb exploring and less all-out action, in the spirit of past games (although they usually had more and harder boss fights that this game) but I still enjoyed this and would highly recommend it despite the minor flaws. THE BAD: The start of the game is horribly slow. Too many cutscenes, too many quick time events (where you have to memorize the button presses...), the weapons are too limited at first, and I wasn't a fan of the ending. Still, the game is fun. It switches between puzzles, platforming, and enemies and has a story that feels more like it belongs in a summer blockbuster than a video game, complete with plot holes and heart pounding action sequences. It did feel a bit repetitive 8 hours in but not as repetitive as, say, Portal 1. Also the multiplayer feels tacked on. Just saying.

This wouldn't be a review if I didn't talk about the quick time events. Yes, they're there. And no, you won't have to take 500 tries to do them. The problem with the quick time events is that you'll have to quickly go between mashing the arrow keys to pressing F to E. Strangely, most of the quick time events happen at the beginning of the game. Either that or I just got used to them.

Everything in this game is pretty solid and works quite well, from the story and character development, to visuals and sound design. A sigh of relief for the much improved shooting sequences and camera angles as well. Despite this, nothing in the game is particularly outstanding. It's good, but not great.

Some issues for me included the ridiculousness of some scenes. On occasion, some sequences looked like they were straight out from a Michael Bay movie. Lara's constant commentary on very minor details was also a bit annoying for me. I was also hoping the game would make more liberal use of it's platforming mechanics, with more complex puzzles. And while the title 'Tomb Raider' suggests you'll be raiding tombs most of the time, this isn't really the case. More actual tomb raiding would've been nice, though combat sequences are still quite fun.

A point where Tomb Raider loses to the mentioned Uncharted series are the secondary characters they aren't near as likeable as in the latter, and mostly worse written the only character you actually get to like is the one that's given sufficient screen time Conrad Roth. I actually felt sorry for the old warrior. The game's overall tone is gritty and dark, and that's what makes the plot quite inconsistent with the gameplay Lara whines and moans a lot (damn frequently the game actually sounds like a porno), cries over her dead comrades and after making her first kill in the cutscenes, but then the gameplay leads you to brutally murder dozens of random people. The gameplay itself is fun, killing (especially with the bow) feel satisfying, puzzles are short but well-made and actually require you to think and action setpieces are gripping. The campaign is structured as Batman: Arkham Asylum, so it isn't exactly open-world, but you may revisit the deserted locations to finish collecting stuff only you won't really want to do it after the main storyline. As for multiplayer, it's quite bland, a poor version of Uncharted's. To sum up, Tomb Raider is not exactly a gem, it doesn't bring anything new to the genre, but nevertheless it's a potent game and a great set-up for the future games (And boy, will there be sequels) Expand

I personally really enjoyed the setting of the game and i liked the way the handled the story and character interactions. The shooting and jumping in the game is quite satisfying and i thought that it was varied enough for its appeal to last throughout the game. There are some annoying quicktime events here and there and the game is from time to time very much scripted and linear. But they do pull this off reasonably well and i found myself not hating the scripted nature of some of its gameplay.

But the game do also have some areas with more freedom which is a nice change of pace. The jumping puzzles in the game have taken a back seat for the shooting stuff and stylished jumping sequences. Personally i didnt mind since i am not a big fan of jumping puzzles but i do believe its worth mentioning. There is also a whole less tomb raiding than you would expect from a Tomb raider game. The tombs in the game are however quite enjoyable even though the puzzles aren't all that challenging.

The action in the game is quite enjoyable and i enjoyed that you could tackle different situations in a number of ways. The upgrade system is also a nice touch with unluckable silencers and stuff like that. The bow is also a fun weapon to use and it very much fits the setting of the game. One complaint i do have on the combat is the enemy variety. The humanoid enemies are varied enough but i believe that the game really would benefit from having more animal-based enemies. It would also really fit the setting to have stuff like big bears or some water based enemy in the game.

And while we are on the topic of the wild life. I do think that it is sad that the developers didn't expand on the hunting and gathering options in the game. That would have been a ton of fun and fitted the games setting. I did however enjoy the different collectibles a great deal.

Tomb Raider is to sum it up a pretty good game. It hardly reinvents the wheel and the scripted nature of the game and the way its quite action oriented may piss some people of. The game do however contain a quite good and meaty campaign and its definitely worth picking up if you are looking for a fun around 10 hour long campaign.

If you liked the first 5 or so Tomb Raiders you will like this game, if you preferred the new, more open world games you will probably not like this as much. The game is a tad bit more open than they used to be through the use of base camps, and you do need to back-track if you want to get/unlock everything.

I like the QTEs (Quick Time Events pressing a button at the right moment), I feel adds to the suspense and invokes a sense of urgency, but it is something new to the TR genre and I understand why some don't like it. Those who don't like it however greatly exaggerate their usage. Other then the first introductory level where it is used quite heavily it happens maybe once or twice per level/area and they are done very well. The only issue with them (and the reason I knocked off a point from the score) is that for the PC version if you don't have an Xbox 360 controller hooked up it can be difficult to figure out what keys need to be pressed and when. This is something I hope they fix in a future patch.

The other reason I knocked off a point is because there were not any large puzzles (that I have read about or found so far) I remember the older games where you would need to run around a tomb and find the pieces to put a contraption back together; and then jump through a number of 'hoops' to get to the end... Fall to your death several times along the way, before getting to the top. Even the DLC (Bonus content) tombs don't have much depth to them.

Overall though it's a great game and I would recommend any fans of the first 5 or so Tomb Raiders to pick it up now; otherwise wait for a Steam Sale and pick it up when it's a little cheaper and you will be happy with your purchase.

The combat is okay, although the enemy seem to lack any tactics beyond sitting still or flying down zip lines at you. It's like shooting fish in a barrel on normal difficulty at least (I'm wishing I'd gone for hard now). As for those dreaded quick-time events, they're really not that bad. This game feels like playing a movie, but in a good way. The action is fantastic, the game transitions between gameplay, cutscenes, and interactive events seamlessly, creating an experience that is exciting to watch but still keeps you on your toes. There is not a lot of dialogue, it is mostly action, but the action is done well.

The exploration is so-so. The levels sort of alternate between linear action levels with no need to explore, and slightly more open levels with loot to find. This keeps the game from getting too repetitive, which is nice. Acrobatics are pretty standard and not very challenging.

The weapon upgrade system is not great, but better than nothing I guess. You find Scrap which you use to upgrade your weapons, but it doesn't have a huge impact on how you will be using them. It is also pretty mindless: you just loot all the containers you see then craft what you can at campsites.

The RPG mechanics are an unnecessary add-on. You get XP from killing enemies and finding treasure, and spend the XP on skills, most of which are not game-changing.

This game tries to present itself as survivalism, but that is just a theme. You can hunt, but it only gets you XP. There is no need to look for food, water, etc. The game even has the ususal health regeneration that action games all have these days. The only resources are scrap and ammo.

Story is not bad. I am not a big Tomb Raider fan: they were too silly and sexist for my taste. This one is better, the main character is more human. The change feels a lot like comparing the James Bond movie Casino Royale to most of the earlier ones: this is more gritty, more human, and more interesting.

All in all, fun for a 14 hour playthough, and maybe another in a few months. It was entertaining, as action usually is, but don't expect more than that. I recommend getting it on sale.

The game defiantly is not as puzzle heavy as the previous game, but there are puzzles, and they are fun. The game looks fantastic, full of colour, varied environments and never noticed texture pop in, frame rate slows down sometime but never enough to ruin the experience. But Multiplayer is bad a poor man uncharted Expand

Tomb raider truly has become more action than you expect, the story is being told fast and seems quiet quickly, however it has not much of a depth, but its just an excuse to introduce a new Lara. In this game you will feel her...she will let you know how scared she is, you will hear her thoughts and all this amazing things together made her character just as perfect as other cool video game characters. Gameplay is all about surviving, solving few puzzle, quick time events and platforming. Overall sometimes the actions gets boring, but it holds up very well as you discover new parts of island. Every part has its own optional Tomb where you can find more loot for upgrades upon solving a simple physic based puzzles. Each area is quiet big and lets you to discover for collectibles. Areas have different design which makes the game not to be boring. Sadly enemy types are quiet same untill the very end of the game but still their AI holds up a good action for the gamer. Finally TOmb raider is kind of a flawless game and its really recommended to everyone who hated the series or loved it im sure this game will change your mind about tomb raider series. Expand

A great return to modern gaming for this beloved franchise. The game has great action and platforming however does become slight Quick Time and Cut scene heavy through out.
Very similar of playing this to the Batman Arkham games.

However plenty of positive here and one of the better games of this year.

The new mechanics are way better, the character is easier to control, the puzzles are better and yet it still feels like tomb raider.
Its been a while since such a great change actually improved a game.
The combat mechanics still aren't that great, but it will get there.
    Anyways, loved it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tomb Raider does NOT have all of the quick-time events and cut scenes people make it out to have. The plot is pretty juicy, with some very unexpected moments. I never imagined the Sun Queen's guardians would turn out to be real. The setting is beautiful and very spooky at times. Some of the textures get a screen-door or somewhat check-board look sometimes. The AI know exactly where you are. Even if the enemies can't see you, they still will fire at your exact location (if they are switched on). Mathias is a good villain. I found Lara's expedition members to be lovable, except for Whitman (you're supposed to not like him). 8/10 because of the relatively low replay value and multiplayer that doesn't do too well. The game is a good buy for $15 or under unless you can re-sell it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I drained a lot of time into this game because the story was engaging. Like reading a good book for the first time, I wanted to keep going to find out where it all ends. The Tomb Raider series has always dabbled in the supernatural and this one is no different. Instead of some South or Central American ruin, this franchise prequel take us to the Asian version of the Bermuda Triangle (the Dragon's Triangle in the game) south of Japan. The scenery is beautiful and the environment is a bit reminiscent of the Lingshan Islands from Crysis. The controls functioned well, although there were times where they inevitably ran into a problem or two. Most of the functionality of the game (i.e. scenery, controls, story) was solid, making Tomb Raider a huge hit from Crystal Dynamics. This was a great telling of how young Lara Croft goes from young archaeologist fresh out of college to a hardened survivor. However, I do have some complaints about some of the game's features that are pretty much never needed in an action game: quick-time events and button mashers. The quick-time events, while some are to be expected, are kind of unnecessary. It's understandable that they're meant to simulate reflexes, but they're always done exactly the same way. Just when you're ready to sit back and watch a cutscene, a quick-time event appears. And usually paired with these QTEs comes the frustrating button-mash events. I have yet to see a need for button mashing in an action game. The reason why I think button-mashers are the worst feature for any action game is because they feel out of place, not to mention the irritation at mashing your best just to fail. A prime example of this is towards the beginning when Lara is wrestling with a large wolf. The first thing you have to do is to mash the left and right buttons to push it off. I've died at least *eight times* mashing like crazy only to have the wolf chomp on Lara's throat and kill her. Then after a couple QTE prompts, you have to mash the E key to repeatedly stab the wolf with an arrow; if you don't, the wolf bites Lara's neck and she dies (same death scene if you fail the first button-mashing event). The times when I had to mash buttons during a life-or-death scene really pissed me off the most during the course of the game. Another thing that doesn't make sense is the end boss. More often than not, it's some guy that somehow never gets shot until the final battle, and even then he takes hits like he's no stranger to getting shot and stabbed in vital areas of the body, and even then it takes *forever* for him to die. I can understand him taking about five or six bullets and not dying right away, but tanking at least twelve while he's casually loading shotgun is just ridiculous and unrealistic. Aside from all of these problems, as well as some other minor glitches, the game was a good experience and one that I'd certainly recommend. Expand

Uncharted was more of an Indy action, but this is more gloomy and tense, and it really makes you wonder what's behind the island. Scenery is just as impressive as uncharted, but puzzles are a little more weak. platforming parts are the same, but the animations could be better. Side characters are pretty weak compared to Uncharted, but the main "villain" is more appealing. Now I said this much Uncharted because this game sadly took A LOT from it, but it's still a solid game, because Uncharted was a solid game. And we get to play with our favourite heroine, see her emotions. Now I really wish this game was more of a survival game or more close to older Tomb Raider games, but I think they will make that in the second game. While others criticize the cut scenes and quick time I enjoyed them, they do not "load a movie" your character interacts in the 'in game' environment in a prescribed way to give the gamer a unique experience. If you are a run and gunner you probably will not enjoy this game as much, don't get me wrong, there is plenty of that, but it is more of a game element (like a character in a haunted house) than a objective (kill as many enemies as we possibly can to win the war). The gameplay is pretty linear, you can fast travel around if you missed something, but you pretty much get the just of where you need to go and what you need to do, not once did I turn the game off in frustration because I needed to step away from a tough puzzle. They were complicated enough that you had to do a little trial and error to get it right, but not too complicated so you can get through them and get back to the awesome story line. The only Con I have is that it could have been a little longer, I completed the game in a little over 12 hours and I was left wanting more, but like all games these days I am sure we will get plenty of expansions. FinallyAnime! "Too Long; Didn't Review: Tomb Raider vs. Uncharted"

I’m not completely through Tomb Raider yet, but I’ll let you know right now: anytime I play it, I don’t want to stop. For the idiots who haven’t played it comparing it to Uncharted...stop it. It’s not “Uncharted or Far Cry with Pause for a minute and lets go over a terrible analogy. Uncharted is a visceral game primarily focused on action, charm, and puzzle-solving with a variety of environments. More or less, the new Indiana Jones. If Uncharted had a color assigned to it, it’d be a cool blue: something majority will like and goes good with pretty much anything. Tomb Raider is also action-based, but far more spread out. In place of hilarious quips and lovable supporting cast, self-development and realization are key focuses, with a lot of brown and green healthily sprinkled in. The assigned color to this game is more like an earthy orange: something that might not initially catch your eye, but when you take a closer look, realize it’s a wonderful addition to any palette.

Whereas Uncharted is more polished and fun, like a fresh comic book, Tomb Raider’s akin to a worn graphic novel because while you might have seen the story somewhere else, it’s still a wonderful sit-down read. For those who enjoyed TR of the past for awful controls and infuriating puzzles, you might be sad to know the new puzzles aren’t particularly challenging at all. You might get stuck like I did for 5 or 10 minutes on something you oddly miss, but otherwise, nothing to be desired. Tomb Raider’s more story focused this time around with optional tombs to desecrate. Uncharted is better suited for puzzling. Now even though TR might not have as much concentrated combat compared to its chronological elder, combat while incredibly simple (and almost too criminally easy at times) is PROFOUNDLY satisfying. The sense of impact is nailed with perfect sound design. The weapons (shotgun, AK/GL, pistol, bow) though a bit vanilla are still a blast to shoot. Oh, and the cover system/camera in TR is perfect. It’s kind of like your car seat ..it always gotchu.

Story-wise, Uncharted is much more “fantastic” with numerous flights of fancy and well-timed humor. Tomb Raider, however, is focused on one thing: escape. It just so happens the mystery to investigate is the main avenue through which to escape. Of course, I’m not finished yet, but so far, the story seems done before & very lackluster, BUT you still want to find out what happens to Lara Croft. This isn’t to say the theme or atmosphere aren’t amazing, but only that the source material evokes no real emotional arousal from me. If you’re concerned about graphics, both are similar, but it doesn’t take a genius to know TR wins in this department. Get it on PC if you can. I’m only able to play at around barely 30fps on high/ultra settings and I’m still having a blast despite feeling crippled by an aging computer.

I don’t have any glamorous quotes to assuage any remaining disbelief if it hasn’t already been stomped out, but what I can say is whether you’ve played Uncharted or not, Tomb Raider is worth your money. Don’t listen to people who say otherwise. The games are indeed similar, hitting some of the same notes, but veering off to craft a unique song. In closing, I can confidentially say if you like truly good games, Tomb Raider should be music to your ears. I give Tomb Raider thus far, an 87/100 with deductions primarily for a boring story & replayability lacking a new game+. I would have marked it lower, but the game really is excellent and super fun...but only by itself unfortunately.

P.S. Oh and multiplayer apparently sucks monkey balls…apparently.

    P.P.S. It DOES suck btw.

Environments are linear at times, but beautiful and fluid. The pace is up to you for the most part, and there are plenty of in-game challenges with incentive to complete them though they're not as challenging as they were in the old Tomb Raider. They completely did away with the drawn-out arbitrary puzzles (finding batteries on far corners of the map just to open a door which allows you to drop a crane allowing you to find a key, etc), but there are themed optional tombs that teach you (if you decide to complete them) various ways to use the environment, while presenting some interesting but isolated challenges. The new Tomb Raider is a little simpler and a little easier, but polished. They made sure that Tomb Raider was still an experience, while, for better or for worse, removing some of the user's responsibility. Because it isn't a grueling challenge to beat, the ending doesn't feel as satisfying as you'd hope, but it leaves the door open for a continuation of the series which I am sure will offer new challenges. In this way, the franchise can move forward without getting boring. I'm looking forward to the next installment. Expand

Sure, I did find the game slightly repetitive by the end (about 15-20 hours of playtime, depending how good you are), but overall it was quite an adventure. Explore areas you've visited before to find hidden secrets and collectibles, kill bad guys with a bow (or grenade launcher, your choice), and do some crazy rock climbing that will make your heart skip at times. I am really looking forward to the sequel! (which I am hoping is in the works) Expand

There are places where acrobatics needed to get to places is beyond me, so get left.

I have played TR once and only managed to complete 75% of it, while completing the game. I am playing again (a year later,) right now and will only achieve the same amount of completion. I think 8/10 is a very generous score.

Yesterday I quit in distress shaking because I could not work out where to go. I went around a series of acrobatics in a big area three times and then gave up. Sometimes those places just come along and yesterday the direction marker seemed to make no sense. Mostly though it's straightforward in that sense.

I don't like that it wants me to kill random animals (like fluffy rabbits) as part of gaining XP. If we are expected to accept acquiring food is part of the adventure, then why not acquire it in the buildings. We plunder enough places. Neither do I really enjoy the many blatantly graphics ways that they have thought up kill Lara. I don't just mean being over-run with enemies.

It's a high impact game and is clearly memorable. I do get ticked-off with it though.

Tomb Raider is a cinematic piece of gaming beauty. This game focusing on telling the origin story of Laura with many in-engine cut scenes and QTE (quick time events). The game play gets boring over time, but the story keeps you pulled in till the very end. I personally loved how the story would push you along and constantly change Laura's appearance. Tomb Raider is a very nice game standing for itself. Compared to the older titles there is a lack of raiding tombs in general due to this element has been build in more optional then as part of the main game. Mainly Tomb Raider plays more like a nice polished Uncharted (at least on PC its polished) So the general survival mechanics, by hunting animals and the scripted (escape) sequences this game focuses more to get the story told. From my opinion this was a pretty good idea because it fits more to the new Tomb Raider concept.

Technically I would say it is the best Tomb Raider game by far!

First and foremost, this is a beautiful game. The art design and visuals are exceptionally well done, as are the animations. Combat is fun, if shallow, and there are plenty of items to search for to keep completionists busy. The plot is swift moving (for the most part), the dialog is well written and the voice acting is great.

My main criticisms come down to the tombs being way too easy and there being a general lack of replay value. The game is relatively linear and plot-driven, so you're going to have a similar experience every time you play. The action set pieces are numerous and super fun, but I can only imagine they wouldn't feel nearly so exciting the second time around. Also, the game is designed so that you will have every single skill and upgrade by the end (as long as you're picking up salvage regularly), so there's no point in focusing on different specializations.

Tomb Raider really falls into the interactive movie camp, and if you look at it that way it really is one of the best the genre has to offer. When held up against other games it definitely has some shortcomings though. I'd recommend picking it up, but maybe only when it goes on sale.

It's a pretty good game, but not without flaws. Many times, it felt like I was watching a movie, just holding forward. It also doesn't bear much resemblance with previous tomb raider games besides maneuverability options, like ledge climbing. I'll let it slide, though, since it's a reboot. If we look at another island survival game, Far Cry 3, it encouraged you to explore by spacing out the main story missions throughout the land. Tomb Raider doesn't do that.

But with the flaws aside, the combat was fun, and I loved climbing my way up or down the rocky island. The story is a great at explaining her origins, but honestly I don't think it explained the bridge between "just an archaeologist in training" to "extreme tomb raider". I've been told that the graphics are average, but I personally think it looks great, especially compared to old tomb raider games. Overall, this isn't a game I'd buy full price. I'd buy it on sale, which it happens much more often than other AAA games.

As almost everyone else has said, this is more of an action 3d platformer game than a puzzle Tomb Raider game. There are a number of optional tombs to raid, which are essentially small puzzle rooms, but the rest of the game is linear and story driven, but it allows you to travel back and forth to areas to do further exploring.

It's mechanics are mostly good, save for the rather many QTE sections which, despite their flaws, make the game more cinematic. I like the fighting and the jumping is well done (unless you want the old masochistic jumping which I was never a fan of) if a bit controlled.

The graphics are amazing, one of the better looking games of this year and it runs surprisingly well on a decent rig. Lasts about 12 or so hours, more if you decide to explore every nook and cranny. All in all, I had fun with this, probably the only TR game I had fun with since TR2 and the isometric Guardian Of Light.

    First the Good parts-
Presentation is flawless, fans will love how Lara looks. Her pain, emotional trauma, the panic and fear she feels, is very believable. Never been so connected to a game character before. Lara is extremely vulnerable but she becomes deadlier as the game progresses. Good job.
The combat is nice, on par with current gen the minor RPG element is present in a very acceptable level. And best of all, NO Leap-of-Faith moments like previous Tomb raider games. Camera work is excellent, which most 3rd person games still fail at accomplishing properly.

    The Bads---
Like i said before, the Tomb Raider element seems missing. This game borrows more from Uncharted series than it does from its predecessors. The puzzles are brain-dead easy, and every secret thing is shown and indicated with obvious symbols like chalk signs. Its like a huge Neon light showing you the way.
The movement and jumping mechanics are plain bad. This is 2013, where if a character can maneuver mid air like Metroid & Contra of NES era, its plain unacceptable. Sure its not as simplified as Assassins Creed series, but stuffs like stuck in a uneven cliff/terrain and off animations simply doesn't cut it.
Tomb raiding is added through off mission tomb raiding spots which are clear afterthought, placed there just for namesake. Game should have been renamed "Lara Craft origins" or something, the "Tomb Raider" element is almost nonexistent

    An awesome game for
    1) The current gamer generation that likes a game to be a walk in the park
    2) Old TR fans who are tired of the age old game play

    A bad game for
    1) Hardcore Tomb raider fans who love challenge and puzzle+tomb raiding element
    2) retards

While not every promising idea Tomb Raider has is pulled off successfully, it nevertheless turns in a tense and memorable ride that combines modern game design with its forebears’ adventurous spirit in some exciting ways. Some of its missteps may well come at the cost of your enjoyment, but most can’t hope to hurt the adventure in the long run. Although it never fully finds its identity, this is a game and a story worth seeing through.
