Characters, atmosphere are extremely powerful. Game is a little bit hardcore so get ready to spend some time to tune in. It is basically not shooter. Using gamepad is much more worthwhile experience than mouse and keyboard.

Cons: Some major issues with the climbing. What's with forcing the player to climb only certain object. That was a big mistake. The developers should really be looking a Dishonoured. Once you've played the competition this game feels like it is being held back. Trying to be something it is not allowed to be.

But that is just me. I wanted more. Having said that it delivered in other areas and was good entertainment.

It's hard to say what I feel when I'm playing Thief. This game is amazing ..

It's a big suprise for me because I had a mixed feelings about this game, but when it came out, I was sure I am gonna spend 100 hours playing new "Thief". That's truth.
If you really need good stealth game, you must buy and play this game, you won't be dissapointed. Don't look at low ratings and give this game a chance..
BTW. Please don't look at old "Thief" games, it's the past and it's over, we have a "new times" in gaming. This game is really good and I don't see any serious problems .. That's all from me.

The game itself isn't terrible, compared to a lot of previous half attempted reboots. It's not a perfect AAA game by any means but the price tag suggests to gamers that they should have made an attempt in which case a lot of polishing should have been done.

For one the AI is not perfect, in fact a long way from and very basic for today's standards. Such as a guy who is always taking a piss, he's always there pissing because the developers didn't program him to do anything else, not even walk around the bar for a bit before looping back around. Woman stood in the street checking there hair, and constantly doing it in a 5 second loop over and over again will annoy a lot of gamers. Some people don't get me wrong are walking around, just as watchmen patrolling and having conversations with one another (that being said if you go back to the same area later on they are having the same conversations).

When a game includes a benchmark test I don't see that as a good sign, in fact that tells me throughout the development they have probably been having issues with things like FPS and the general performance at times. I've not really had an issue with it however.

I remember the previous Thief games from years ago, however I was never drawn to them back then. In all fairness when you compare this remake to those of Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem Forever this isn't a bad remake and they've done a half decent job, unfortunately a half decent job in this industry generally isn't good enough.

The controller isn't too shabby and the dark setting is very nice, it's got a decent story behind it and quite a few hours of gameplay involved. For 19.99 you'll probably "just" get your moneys worth but I think Thief is going to be one of those games that's going to be on offer quite a lot so if you are mulling over weather to buy the game then I'd wait until then. You can actually buy it from certain licensing sites for under £10 in which yes, you more than get your moneys worth as was with the case for me.

For as many things is has right, it has a number of things it just didn't manged to get across. I think anything under 5 is being over critical and anything over 7 is just being too generous. But each to there own. I'm unsure of what kind of deadlines the developers had to work with which is one thing that many people do not take into consideration. Perhaps another 12 months of development could have seen this game go much further than what it actually ever will, even so in that case it isn't the developers fault. If they had lets say 2-3 years to work on this then yes, disappointing outcome.

As an experienced gamer I've generally enjoyed it so far, but it doesn't have the "can't pull myself away" effect. And once i've completed it I don't see myself ever going back to it, or rushing out to by any future DLC's for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a big fan of the Thief/Dark Project franchise. Those games are part the reasons why I'm studying video game creation. Everything in those games are amazing: the dark ambiance they put you in, like if you are a master of the shadow, the greed you have by trying to get 100% of the loot, the fun you have by creating a diversion to escape from the guards... They force you to think about every possible strategy to enter a building and discover every secrets. So far I've finished the Thief serie a multiple of times, a 100% complete without getting spotted or having to knock out anyone, and I was very happy when I learned that Thief 3 would have a sequel. Thief 4 was very fun to play, and the graphics were amazing, but a few things were missing, and I hope to see those things in a Thief 5. Here is my full review of Thief 4, playing on Master difficulty, ghost gameplay...

    Visuals/Sounds/Ambiance:
The graphics are amazing. There is enough polygons on characters so that we don't see much of their edges. The clothes they wear, the weapons they have, everything is well-made. The streets look very realistic. They don't seem empty at all. They are full of small things like boxes, barrels, vases, merchant stalls, carts and rubbish. The textures are also great. You can see that a lot of work as been put into those. The leather looks rough and worn, the velvet looks soft and expensive, the stones and wooden planks look dirty and cold, and you can even see skin pores on characters! The lights and shadows that help you across the levels are very well used. Not too much shadows to make it easy to travel, and not too much light that would seem overdone. Torches, street lamps, oil lamps and "primal effect" do a really good job to create the mood. The music is great as well. I was very surprised to hear dubstep, but I found it a good idea. I also liked the fact that the music change drastically when you are spotted. Good job

    Mechanics/Missions:
The mechanics were very easy to understand. You have the same weapons from before and the same way to move without being seen. There's one thing that really annoyed me, you cannot jump!!! You can't ask me to play a first person game without being able to jump. Sometime a jump can save your life... I still had the feeling that people playing the predatory way were more rewarded than people playing the rightful way. There was some loots almost inaccessible unless by knocking out guards, either because you had to be in the lights for too long or because guards from very far could see you... a bug maybe? There is also the part were you slip yourself between planks and crates by holding E. In the middle of the transition, you have to press E very fast to move a plank. I didn't understood what was the utility of this action in the gameplay, maybe if the player could damage his health by not pressing E fast enough would be better. I also found the missions easy. To enter the building, you have 3 choices: Front door, opened window or the ventilation grid. In the other Thief games, you could use the sewers, find multiple secret panels, use underground ways and even use the fireplace. Usually, there is so many ways to go to an objective that you don't usually escape by the way you went in. There was also not enough civilians or guards, it was so easy to move that I always though that something would jump from behind.

    The narrative:
The narrative is what deceived me in this game. I was very eager to see Viktoria again. She is a major character of the main story, and in Thief 3, it looked almost as if you would see her again. She took your eye for Constantine in Thief 1 and she saved you from father Karras in Thief 2. I though that she would be in Thief 4, but nope. She has to be in Thief 5. She brings so much mysteries in Garrett's world. I was also very surprise that they was no mention of Garrett's mechanical eye that replaced the one that Viktoria took. Didn't Constantine whispered in Garrett's mind that he would come back to take the other one? When Garrett steals from a museum in Thief 3, he find his lost eye on a statue and when you approach it, you can hear Constantine voice...At least Basso was still there.

In conclusion: Thief 4 is amazing regarding the graphics and the ambiance, but the mission are too shorts, too easy and had the felling that there was only one way to do them, regardless of wanting to be detected or not. The fact that there was only 2 characters from the prequels was very deceiving. I'm still going to play Thief 4 a second time to try to finish it at 100%, but I will not have as much fun as with Thief 1, 2 or 3. I hope there will be a Thief 5, with the real sequel, with Viktoria, maybe with Keepers or with Constantine, or with the Lost city for a fourth time. :)

About the only thing I am a little disappointed with is the departure from the original concepts which made the story so rich, such as the Hammers, Pagan and if this is a reboot, the Keepers, but on the other hand, the storyline was in my mind another good storyline in the mosaic which is the Thief series. What could make this game brilliant is a series of well done DLC missions, or the ability for players to craft their own missions.

I also see why they changed the voice for Garrett and hearing Garrett panting when jumping from posts and climbing walls adds an authentic appeal to it, though I still in my heart of hearts, miss the cool voice of Stephen Russell.

I really hope they continue with this franchise...

This is a walk down memory lane for me and as victim to reminience I recently loaded up the old thiefs to hark back to the old days and found my memories were far more golden than the gameplay itself. Age has not been kind, graphically, to the old series. This new thief iteration captures the soul of the old series and injects some much needed modern nuiances such as the swoop ability. Yes the AI can be fickle but if searchers were as keen as reviewers seem to shout about there would be quite a few broken controllers. Gamers have plenty of options to keep them busy and feel the pinch of nostalgia. I'm happy with the outcome and would fully support Eidos continuing the series. Expand

Seriously, load them up and play... they are good, but the new game not only looks better but plays better too. I'll grant that the world is not as open, but particularly with the modern hints turned off and the difficulty turned on the game is harder and more fair than the old games. AND! With the difficulty turned down and the hint features turned on the game tells a smooth enjoyable story.

Also, it's beautiful. Sure the color pallet is dark... but it's set at night in a dirty gothic city... if it had been any more brightly colored people would be complaining about that.

As a fan of the original series, it's not the same or even close. However, if you approach it as a completely new series there's a lot of enjoyment to be had in the game. I wish it was closer to the original, but times change sadly. There will never be another Balder's Gate series either, but I still try to enjoy the more modern RPG's for what they have to offer.

What I did like the original thief games was the actual stealing - being able to go into people's houses and grab stuff, pickpocket passerbys, etc. But if I remember correctly, there hasn't really been that many opportunities to do so, as the games quickly devolved into crawling steampunk ruins and killing some robots. Forgive me, it has been years since I played those games.

So the new thief kinda delivered more of what I liked about the original games - the ability to explore the city at my own pace, loot houses, pickpocket, etc. I like the city design, it is rather complex with different levels from the sewers to streets to upper levels. Plenty of stuff to explore. I like this aspect of the game.

After a while I discovered that the F - focus mode lets me see loot, interactive points, etc, and it kinda ruined a lot of freeform looting experience. The game degenerated into running around and mashing F. There's no reason to look at anything in the environment, unless it is glowing blue.

Overall, I liked the game, it has decent voice acting, good localization into Russian, although I never had much hope in the story of thief games - I know that after a while it will turn into a steampunk dungeon crawl, and sure enough, chapters 3 and 4 were rather linear delving into ancient dungeons and towers.

Many people mention terrible AI, and I have to agree, playing on the 2nd "Thief" difficulty, the AI seems deaf, dumb and blind - I can walk, shoot arrows 5 feet away from the enemy, and they will not hear me. I can stand 5 feet in front of an enemy in the shadows and they won't see me. I can knock out one of 2 patrolling guards, and the 2nd one will never wander where his buddy went.

Overall, the game is good - graphics are fantastic, and performance is very good when running low settings on a 3 year old rig.

This bunch of various killjoys aside, the analysis is, as always, subjective. The plot is plain and uninteresting, the characters forgettable, the sound system is dumbed down and the levels are more linear and cutted by loading times. It's all true, and there are other little things like the rope arrow that you can shoot only in some spots, and the moss arrow that's gone for good, and the map is a mess, and away with all that. Yes, that's sadly real.
    BUT
As a Thief series veteran, and Dark Mode contributer, my opinion is that this fourth installment is immersive like very few before it. The sensation of being a thief is here, crystal and sharp like a knife. The atmosphere, grim and gothic, the sense of persistent danger, it's all here. The slow progress from a dark corner to another, the silent approaching to the unwary guard, the hands taking what is yours to soon become mine, the thieving essence is still there, and better than before.
I believe Thief is not a perfect game. It suffers of many weak points: plot and level design the ugliest of them. Still, if you can put them aside, you will spend 20 hours like a real thief.

It's entertaining, not sure if I will play it again soon but perhaps in a year. Would be interesting to see if any DLC's pop up. Good buy if the price is reduced. Expand

The last two story missions however falls short and makes you realize that how uninvested you are in the story itself and the ending is on par with the pre-dlc fix of Mass Effect 3.

But it has many good qualities, if however you have yet to purchase / play Dishonored I would recommend that instead. There you can stealth and / or assassinate to your hearts content with a storyline that is much better.

First thing said: I really hate to give a game any rating whatsoever because numbers mostly are totally arbitrary and reviews are never totally objective.

Thief on the other hand is fully playable with admittingly some bugs in sound design and movement system here and there but the amount of control given to the player over his personal game experience is just awesome, especially when it comes to game difficulty. I don't get it why most reviewers seem to totally ignore that as personally I can't name a single modern AAA title that gives you the customizabilty Thief gives you.
Are you unhappy with the focus mechanics? Fine: just cut them out of the game entirely. Combat too easy? Fine: adjust it so that Garret dies after a single hit or even make you lose as soon as you are spotted.
There is only one major negative that they won't be able to fix with patches I fear. The level design. I played the original games back then and I have to admit that most of the levels are too small. Especially the side missions. The main missions on the other hand, while still too small, generally offer you 3 different types to approach them. Usually there is the direct way which almost certainly means you will be discorvered more than once and have to fight your way out. If you play it that way, It's your own fault. The devs made the combat mechanics as clunky as they are for a reason: Garret is not supposed to be good at melee combat - he is a thief, not an assassin. It's not Dishonored after all. It's still nice that they let you have that choice but thankfully in most missions there are at leat two if not more different ways. You can ghost yourself through if you want - it's totally possible but usually that means you'll miss a lot of shineys on the way or you can knock out basically everyone around and use the environment to your advantage to split groups of guards to take them out seperatly. Based on the difficulty you set at the beginning this can get very challenging, especially when there are civilians around.
Basically you can play Thief pretty much the way you want to play it but it definitely rewards a stealthy and thoughtful approach. If you are not a patient person than this game can be very frustrating. Even the open world being less open than for example in Deadly Shadows where you got that climbing gear at some point, I pretty much appreciate as it makes the open world more challenging to get around. And as the main story progresses new areas of The City become available while the parts that became familiar to this point slightly change. Suddenly there are guards where there weren't any before or their pathes and behavior changed slightly. It keeps navigating The City challenging.
So far to mechanics and game design bu what about story? Is it any good? Well that's rather subjective. I don't think it is a bad story. It has some rather unexpected twists here and there and, in my opinion, becomes more and more interesting the further you get. And, as in the previous titles it is packed full with hidden lore in terms of letters and segments of books. Animations and voice acting is really good but as I mentioned earlier the sound design is a bit buggy at times. In cutscenes voices often are too quiet while at other times there are voices appearing out of nowhere at incredible high levels that they make you jump as they appear to be right next to you (usually when you are concentrated on sneaking around).
Visuals on the other hand are quite good overall. At least in the PC version. Only textures are disturbing me as they appear to be rather low res in some places.

That all said: It's a solid stealth game with some issues that I find primarily originated in the console versions. Almost everything about this game could have been better if they decided to make it PC only especially when it comes to the mission and level scale as consoles hugely limit developers in that regard

In some levels such as the brothel underground the mood is fantastic, and in the Moira Asylum it's basically a horror experience, those were the 2 highlights of the game for me. Stealth mechanics are mostly working well, spending most of the time in shadows, avoiding light, using sounds and darkness to your advantage, but the main problem for me was the lack of freedom. You are too restricted, no longer you have tons of options how to solve the level, you can't even jump, only on the scripted places, where developers want you too, the same with rope arrows that you can use on just a few prepared spots. Instead of running around the city freely in the night, jumping on rooftops as a true master thief, you are just searching for those scripted places where you can jump, it's restricting as hell and this basically killed all the potential of being a great game. The map is also pretty terrible and ugly. I heard many negative comments about the story and honestly I didn't really mind... until the end. The end is really bad, cheesy and feels like some bad cliche b-movie. Also, I didn't appreciate the bugs, the optimization in some places, bad audio balance, volume off pretty often, cutting off early, subtitles out of sync, even half a year after the release and still not patched, amateurs. But for the most part I had a good time and I still enjoyed my play-through that took me about 15 hours including all the side missions. 7/10 Expand

Even the slightest mistake could end in death, and to stay out in off the shadows is certain doom. This is all brought up by the fantastic level design, which gives the player almost life like amounts of freedom. In addition to this, the games graphics are amazing, they're even better than Battlefield 4! However, the games UI is awful, making it hard to select the weapon you want, resulting in some frustrating parts. Also, the AI is some of the worst I've ever seen! For example, at one point in the game I saw two guards, headshoted one of them, and the other one, standing right next to didn't even notice! WTF! And, the story is terrible, mainly because it tries to be more than it is. This is all hindered by Garret's appalling new voice actor, who never puts any expression into anything! If I was to judge thief purely on gameplay it would get a ten, but it's marred by so many technical issues that take you out of the immersion. Expand

The stealth in this game is really well flushed out. It's satisfying to sneak around the place and there are some really good mechanics. Like the light/dark indicator or the swoop ability.

I also thought the atmosphere was really nice. The fog looks amazing and the detail in the world is astonishing. The game just oozes atmosphere with it's dark and gloomy graphics style.

The game seems to have a fairly bad reputation due to average and even negative reviews. I don't really know why this is. I mean, surely there are some people that dislike it because it's nothing like the original Thief or they were expecting things like the weapon variety Dishonored had.

Which brings me to a point which annoyed me the most, stop comparing this to Dishonored. The two are completely different games. In some way similar but mostly not. Like combat. This is well done in Dishonored but not in Thief. Eidos deliberately didn't make the combat interesting since Thief is a game that focuses on stealth, that means there should be no to minimal combat involved.

All in all, Thief is an enjoyable experience. It has it's problems, but none of them are gamebreaking and almost all of them are forgivable when you look at how good the rest of the game is. Like the atmosphere and stealth.

I was just a tiny bit disappointed that the general look of it seemed not too far removed (except in quality, which was pretty outstanding) from the previous Thief games, and I have to say that I didn't really like the plot either, but I did enjoy playing this one. The FMV sequences were able to be skipped - which having gone through the in-game movie of Tomb Raider I was pretty pleased about - but I still watched them all once just to get the idea of what the story was.
I thought it was a very polished effort, great graphics, loved the particle effects and the lighting on this one. Didn't like having to shift the same plank of wood every now and then, and don't think my keyboard appreciates having to mash a key to open a window, but it wasn't too far removed from what could be expected.
It's not excellent to the nth degree, but it's definitely worth getting hold of.
I think the only thing I wasn't too happy about was the light gem - whereas in the original you had a purple/blueish hue around Garrett when he was in shadow, we now have a little gem in the corner that seems to only go from white to grey to black in three very short steps. I didn't really like that little bit about it, but generally, the game was fun to play and I would recommend Thief fans play it if they haven't already.

Also while Garret has a decent arsenal, the use of much of it feels a bit too scripted and somewhat limited. for example Rope arrows are cool but I rarely find a "designated" place to use them. more of an open world could fix that.

Other then that I really like it. I like slower paced strategy stealthy games like this anyway . Also I have never played the earlier Thief games so I didnt have any preconceived ideas of how I thought this game should be..

Writing is poor, side characters are lacking in depth as are many of the side missions excluding the client jobs. The story starts off somewhat intriguing but eventually turns to **** towards the ending.

It's also quite obvious there was a clash of creative vision during the game's development, which ends up giving the impression that the Thief reboot isn't quite sure what sort of game it wants to be. A slow, methodical stealth game, or a bombastic and cinematic experience. Thief ultimately tries to be both and ends up not quite hitting the heights it aspired to reach. Despite all these flaws and areas of improvement, I still somehow managed to enjoy it for the most part. Give Thief reboot a go you've run out of stealth games to play. It's not too bad, but know that it's not particularly memorable and there are better games out there.

Not once have I found a glitch, or an exploit, but I do know this: Whatever is stopping you from liking this game must be either 1:You just don't like the series, or even played it so it would look bad, or 2: You computer must be very slow, so it won't run very fast

No cool factions, no hammerites, no pagans, burricks and lobstermen replaced with dogs and birds. It's not cool with kids if modern game doesn't have doge.
Freeform climbing and rope arrow usage replaced by scripted dev-approved location movement only. Combat

Знаю за что ругают Вора и согласен с ними. Но мне понравилось, втащила игру атмосфера стимпанка и мрака.

It's good game, but it's not good thief.
It's brand is it's curse. Play it as a nameless game and you will have your fun. Play it as a next thief and you are going to feel bad.
It's not thief [insert next number]. It's new game with new gameplay inspired by thief. Definitely more than actual user score (5.9).

I really liked it. It was hard to get used to the FirstPerson view, but I liked the many side quests and other different options. What wasn't good is the free roam part. You could easily get lost on the map. It was pretty frustrating. I liked the story too, although it wasn’t a whole story.

Played in 2021. It's alright. Swoop is very fun, story is meh, side missions are good. Fine stealth overall.

Стильно, модно, молодежно. Прекрасный стелс, интересная история. Обязательно пройду еще раз.

I'm playing the game for the 2nd time and it has a structure that makes the player feel this atmosphere in a very dark city where you have to be very secretive. it's a game to be forgotten and replayed.

Bana göre sinir edici düzeyde kötü bir oyun ama ilk oyunları güzel oyunlardır.

Ok... it's not a bad game per se... but it's NOT a Thief game! Where are the Hammerites? The pagens? The Keepers? All they just dissapeared? **** - and that girl, whatever-her-name, is a pain in the side!

Not the best brand relaunch ever, but forgetting the great predecessors, it's a decent game of its own. [March 2014]

It may not be a traditional Thief game and the story may be awful but there's still some great stealth to be had. [May 2014, p.66]

This new Thief does a lot things right but can still be rather clumsy at times. Definitely worth trying, though. [Issue #240]
