The smaller scale of the levels is not my main problem with the game, Deadly Shadows also had smaller levels compared to the previous games, but they oozed personality and atmosphere, from the pitch black forge with the immortal golems to the zombie ship at the harbor to Shalebridge Cradle. This, however, does not. There are not many locations in Thief that are memorable, it all feels pretty generic. They also seem to have largely ignored the heavy Steampunk art design of the previous games, which makes things worse. The story is also uninteresting. As for the graphics, they are a mixed bag. The lighting and fog are great, while texture quality is rather poor. The game also looks like it lacks the high contrast black of the previous games, it looks washed out and grey as if the developers were afraid of the shadows, ironically enough. "Batman vision" also looks out of place in a Thief game. Good things? The PC version runs well and the difficulty is highly customizable, if you turn everything apart from the vision indicator off you can have an experience close to the older Thief games, although unfortunately a more boring one. Overall, I don't think this is worth full price, but perhaps it's worth playing through when it goes 50% off. At around 8 hours to completion, it is also about half as long as one would expect from such a game. Even Last of Us took about 15 hours to finish, this game is definitely way too short. What a shame. Expand

I am going to say right off the bad that this review is entirely based on Thief being viewed as a standalone game. That being said, it still is very lackluster and can hardly overcome its weaknesses to be a good game. In short, it is an average game, it isn't terrible like Ride to Hell but it hard to recommend unless you are desperate to play a stealth game and have already played Mark of the Ninja, The original Thief trilogy, The Deus Ex series with stealth runs and Dishonored.

    Level design:
Levels, excluding the hub/city, are highly linear and the optimal route of the player is apparent. The best analogy for these linear sections is to equate them to hallways with cubbyholes on the sides with loot. Sure, you can go into the cubbyholes but they rarely help the player progression because many of them are dead ends and the player has to go back onto the path made by the developers. The question one should ask when playing Thief 4 is, "how did the devs want me to play this level." Not, "how should I beat this level."

    Player movement:
The player cannot jump unless promoted too by the game, further limiting their actions to traverse a level and avoid traps that are in the game. As much as the developers want to believe, jumping is not a "contextual action". However, you can "swoop", an ability that is simply a dash that makes you hard to detect in lighted areas and can be chained in succession. Does it make up for the lack of an ability to jump without being prompted?

    Audio:
After playing the game for a few hours, it will become apparent that the dialog and audio in the game repeats allot. The dialog itself in the game and cut scenes are uninspired. The audio transitions of being undetected and being engaged are poorly executed. Finally, the sound track for this game is hardly memorable, a shame from a triple A game.

    Graphics:
This is one of the few strong points of the game, it isn't ugly, and in fact it is atmospheric. The textures are decent and the particle effects bring this world to life. There is a good contrast between the light and dark areas of the game but the washed out grey shadows makes you feel like the enemies should see you because you are not immersed in total darkness.

    AI:
The AI is highly unaware of the world around it unless you put out light sources or throw a bottle to draw its attention. It can still detect you if you are not careful but it is easy to outsmart the AI.

    Combat:
I do realize that this is a stealth game but it is poorly done when you are forced to do it. You can only attack with your blackjack, you cannot parry, but you can dodge. This close combat is highly repetitive especially in later levels where it takes 10-15 hits to kill an enemy. Finally, Garrett only has one audio file that plays whenever you attack which is, "EH", which is very annoying when repeated. It is quite clear that combat was not a focus of the game but it is neither enjoyable nor satisfying when you are forced to fight.

    Story (no spoiler mode):
There isn't very special here, it is boring and does not help the player engage with the context of this world.

In conclusion, Thief 4 on its own isn’t terrible but it isn’t a good game either. It falls flat of the triple A standard and can hardly match other giants in the stealth genre.

I came into this game thinking that it would be great. I'm really into stealth games that have a great degree of difficulty, because I think the difficulty is what makes it immersive. I'm gonna start off by saying that that graphics, for the most part, are very well done. The map of the city is useless. Most doors are unable to be opened, which is terribly disappointing for a stealth game, and makes the game seem very linear. AI is abhorrent and provides no level of immersion whatsoever. You can look a guard dead in the eyes 5 feet away in the dark and he'll have no idea you're there. It's weird that the animal AI is made to be better than human AI. I like the fact that birds and dogs will be alerted at sudden movement or noise. I feel as though the human AI should act differently from one another, so one person would be more alert than another to movement in darkness or the slightest sound. That's what creates immersion for me. Moving on, the dialogue between guards and monologue of guards is pretty terrible. Walking around an area, you can hear the exact same dialogue multiple times. The voice acting is cheap and a weak attempt at creating a natural environment. The volume of said dialogues physically don't make any sense, and HUGELY break immersion. The fact that you can be facing a man standing 15 feet away from you and you hear his voice in surround sound defies the physics of sound. Another very important point, as this is the first of the franchise that I have played, I feel absolutely no emotions towards any of the characters (playing through about 4 hours), and I don't even know why I'm a thief. I have no set purpose in this game, and that's why this game bores me. Expand

This game was bad enough for me to create a profile and submit a review just to warn fellow gamers to stay away from this stinker. Linear levels, mantling only on few pre-set points and constant handholding make this unworthy of the Thief name. Go play The Dark Mod or Dishonored, both games that are much more closer to the original classics.

To Masterx1234. Are you nuts? A zero? Seriously dude, you need to get help if you think this game is a 0/10. That tells me you're so invested in the original game that you can't see past it. The game is atmospheric and fun -- all the reviews say this, even the negative ones. It's not hard to make a fair judgement here -- fine, you hated the game, but zero? You're a fanboy, nothing more.

The story is not interesting, the open world is pathetic and I wouldn't even call it an open world because it isn't open. The game has some issues on my AMD card and while the stealing is cool the combat needs work. All the arrows you have are interesting enough but the countering system is just plain bad.

Another huge problem is the clunky feel of the character, you're supposed to be a master thief and you can even make a simple jump when you want to, have to wait for a certain prompt/place to execute a jump.
Do yourself a favor and buy Dishonored instead, it's a much better game in all aspects.

I played Thief back in the day and I still recall trembling with glee as I saw its cover and realized that someone had really made the game I always dreamed they would. And it was everything I hoped for and then some. I've played them all since then and even though Thief III started to lean towards the dull precipice of console gaming, I still enjoyed a lot of it and preordered this reboot. I shouldn't have and I'm never paying for something they haven't made yet again. Ok so:

    Good things:
The graphics capture the atmosphere really well. Certain parts of the city feel exactly like I imagine old London or something felt and that' very cool.

    Bad things:
And that's why this is so bloody frustrating. They had the tools, they'd made the setup for this game and then they dropped it on the floor. The story is weak and not particularly engaging. Garret isn't his old self and a bit too emo. The level design is far from inspiring and you're mostly dragged along a linear course with no planning and few options. Moving the character around feels a bit clumsy and ancient which was fine in 99 but not so much now. Worst of all though: the sound is utterly messed up. You can't tell where voices come from and that's just not ok in a stealth game. It breaks immersion and makes it really hard to navigate the darkness in a stealthy way.

In the end we needed more missions, more planning, less moving back and forth over the same (admittedly fairly gorgeous) cityscape. We needed a protagonist with a cynical story and his good old sarcastic approach to everything and one that felt like you were moving around a master thief and not a clunky dude from 99.

This game was a big let-down. It wasn't all bad, it's playable, but it had SO much potential and could so easily have been a lot more. Frustrating.

This is not a Thief game as you know it. This is something much worse. There's a lot of polish here, but at the end of the day it's just not fun. The Thief mythos has been redefined and the core mechanics have been changed.

Did you enjoy making a pile of bodies on each level in previous Thief games while slowly progressing through? Gone; now the levels are extremely linear and encounters tend to act as a checkpoint through which you'll pass and immediately forget.

Enjoyed collecting loot and meeting those value goals each level? Gone as well. The loot will literally obstruct your path. Levels feel more like a Mario game than Thief--the loot will jump out at you (especially now that it shines *and* you have focus vision to make it pop). Sure you can go slightly out of your way and grab a few more coins, but it's hardly worth it.

Did you enjoy finding secret areas and the rewards within? Also gone. The secrets in this game are designed to be readily found so that everyone can find every secret during every playthrough. Worse still, the rewards inside tend to be unique loot which will go to your hideout to be stacked on each on a shelf or hung on a wall. Absolutely no gameplay rewards here.

Did you enjoy the variety of enemies in the previous games? Gone again. There are two. TWO! types of enemies in the entire game. One of which is just a lazy version of the other, with sensitivity to noise and other triggers turned way up.

Did you enjoy the AI of the previous games? Probably not, I know I didn't. Yet still it's worse here. Enemies rarely alert each other of events. Wandering civilians have been exchanged for caged birds and dogs. Yes, caged. They couldn't be bothered to make the dogs wander, so they just sit in a cage and bark.

Did you enjoy using a variety of arrows to take down enemies? Pretty much gone. There are fewer arrow types, you can hold less of them (especially starting off), and they're extremely rare. Expect to use one or two a level.

Did you enjoy knocking out opponents? Backstabbing them? Stealing arrows from an archer so he can't fight back? Gone. Gone. Gone. You have only a black jack now and there's no distinguishing knockouts from kills.

Did you enjoy collecting keys and progressing through the level? Yup, gone. No keys here, just linear progression triggered by scripted events.

I could go on, but i think you get the point. Is this a good Thief game? Definitely not. Is this a good game when not compared to the rest of the series? I'm afraid not. It does have a couple genuinely enjoyable moments, but those are few and far between, and they certainly don't make the between bits worth playing.

Do yourself favor and skip this game. Fingers crossed that the Thief series doesn't end with this stinker.

Total size on my hard-drive (Master Thief edition): 25GB

++ Customizeable difficulty that goes beyond the usual Easy-Normal-Hard (though these are present as well). Thief uses a points system that lets you create your own level of difficulty. Want to have only one life? Killed in one hit? Limited / no ammo? It’s up to you.

+ Graphics. It takes some horsepower to crank the settings, but when you can, the result looks amazing.
    + Save anywhere, any time.
+ Rhythmic stealth gameplay. Spending too much time calculating the next move destroys the flow of the world around you. Save often, and take chances. I found a high risk / high reward style the most enjoyable way to play.
+ Horror elements. It needed more of this, but what we got is great. The asylum level (Chapter 5) is fantastic.
+ Every level design is a maze. Acquiring different tools can open up new paths.
+ From church windows to Ector’s “metal man” to the name of the inn, tributes to the older Thief series abound.

+/- Decent story that is frustratingly open-ended. Yes, there are supernatural elements, but an attempt was made to keep things “realistic” - or at least based in a believable reality. It’s a personal tale of Garrett and a job that he messed up. Presentation is very Hollywood – complete with stereotypical shady characters and the occasional cheesy one-liner.
+/- Soundtrack is decent, though it seems more suited to Batman than Thief.
+/- Excellent sound design in general, but ambient npc conversations frequently glitch, triggering multiple instances at the same time over the top of each other.

    - Kleptomania simulator is the bulk of the gameplay. There’s important loot to be found, but most of the time you’ll be opening every drawer and cabinet in a house, hunting for silver spoons and gilded mirrors. And half of the time, the drawers that you open are empty anyway.
    - Only two major clients besides Basso, each of which provides three small missions.
    - Stupid AI. Guard paths are very predictable. Patient players will have little trouble ghosting the levels.
    - No fast-travel. Maybe this shouldn’t be a requirement in a Thief game, but it would have saved me the trouble of traveling from one end of the city to the other, using the same alleys and rooftops I’ve used many times before while enduring half-a-dozen loading screens. Fast-travel between inns / hideouts would have been appreciated.
    - Reused NPC character models. EVERYWHERE.
    - Reused ambient conversation. It’s not unusual to hear the same conversation between different pairs of guards twice within five minutes.
    - Small levels, usually more typical of ports of mobiles games (which Thief is not). Loading screens everywhere.
    - Pre-rendered cutscenes are oddly choppy.

I enjoyed the time spent in Thief (2014), but those hoping for a modern embodiment of the classic Thief games will be very disappointed. A competent stealth adventure that is best in small doses – as the small scope and limited story cannot hide what eventually becomes repetitive gameplay.

    1- GENERAL

Thief is a stealth action game that I've bought in a sale when I was playing Dishonored. I thought it was alike... well, it is, but is not as good as it could be.

As the title suggests the game is based in stealing stuff, but we do it with no purpose. We are not Robin Hood, we just steal... maybe that's the purpose, but I think all this theft could have a meaning. It has not.

The game goes in Victorian London, now ruled by a tyrant for some reason. After the opening scene we spend most of our gameplay trying to explained what happened then and after that. Not much of a plot, but it seems all the story is kinda weak. The voice acting and character building was not very good also.

    2- GAMEPLAY

But the game is about stealing and stealth, and in that aspect it's great. We are often confronted with hard sections where it seems impossible to go through without being noticed by the guards. So most of the times I just knock them or put an arrow on their heads. The game is very difficult, and even on normal it was clearly hard for me to go through. Despite that, the AI is bad, with some bugs that I've learn to exploit. That does not ruin the fun.

The game is not open world though, and we have a lot of loading screens between sections. That takes some of the immersion, since some of those could take up to 10 seconds on my laptop.

The controls are just frustrating, since we never know how to do something. Sometimes we are able to do an action just jumping, others we have to press a determined button...

The graphics are good, and I have no problems running the game in medium setup, that helps a lot.

The score mechanism gives the game some replay ability, but I warn that I do not know how can someone go through the game unnoticed. Well, maybe I'm just bad.

    3- CONCLUSION

I've enjoyed the game, but I've never have that feeling of immersion. I've quit before the ending also. The problem was that I was always comparing the game to dishonored, and he always lost. If you are able to ignore the bad story and the loading screens you will have a rather good stealth game where you will love to steal everything. But I've noticed the €29.99 price tag, and even knowing that the game is on sale a lot of times, it's annoying that the producers keep it at so high prices, it's just unreal and that's the reason I thumbed it down.

IF i had to TLDR for those of you on a time constraint, or illiterate add fools, i would say that the game is fundamentally a good game, but lacks identity, and proves that Eidos trusts more in their hivemind than the integrity of the brand they revive. This is sometimes the case with the deus ex reboot too, but not even close to how bad thief disrespects the soul of the series.

The gameplay sells itself as a competent stealth title, and it would be, if not for oddities with AI, lack of context clues and sound development, and a few too many funnels towards scripted cinematic hands off or limited interaction sequences. Ill admit they were almost selling me on those moments, if not for the fact that i know eidos montreal is capable of delivering those moments with actual gameplay.
In the places where they wanted to tribute the series roots they appear to step on them with some form of arrogance that is only the shadow of artistic integrity. The franchise could have kept its incredible lore roots with some minor modernizing that only the most staunch would critique...but they decided to actually scrap all but the general structure of what they THOUGHT a thief game was. Instead of reimagining these pillars of the series they knocked them down....completely.
No factions. Just guards and thieves and some arcane goofsters. And by removing some of the high fantasy elements those factions brought with them they also cut down the tone from being dark but charming, to crass and grimdark....why do that? edgy sells i guess.
Garrets trademark metal eye. nope thats magic now. new backstory for how he gets it. New daughter like figure we actually DONT GET TO CARE ABOUT because we spend one moment with her basking in her stupidity before 90% of the game goes by without hardly seeing another woman and when we are reintroduced to her shes not really a character....the story skirts on with a few idignities but nothing really compelling. Even the games chief antagonist is a one note angry evil guy who you can hardly really learn about. Hes just a sadist aparently. And the behind the scenes evil bad guy overlord the baron...yeah you dont learn much about him either.

There is a reason why the user score for this game is so mediocre, because this game and its contemporaries owe homage to some of the greatest games of all time, a real sacred cow of games. Thief 2, system shock, and deus ex. the holy trinity of late 90s genius that influenced EVERYTHING YOU KNOW AND LOVE!
Looking glass studios may be gone, and this might have been an attempt to keep the series from stagnation, but its not...its a way to keep an IP making money for the current incarnation of EIDOS. And i guess its got some value as a game on its own...its just painfully hollow and insulting to bare that this game could have been so much more. Its fine, but it would BE GREAT if it just never existed or was actually a thief game.

Story - 4/10 - A really awful story in my opinion. Characters are poorly explained and I felt there was simply no narrative to explain what was happening properly. This game has one of the worst story endings I've ever encountered. The game had its moments where it looked like the writers figured it out but quickly descended back into banality.

Game play - 7/10 - Actually not surprisingly too bad in my opinion. Yes, there are a few frustrating design flaws in the game such as the lack of proper jumping (very dumb decision imo) and the annoying repetitiveness of opening windows all the time. But otherwise, when you're sneaking, this game really is a lot like the other thief games. I found the game play at its worst during some of the "action" scenes - which do not fit the overall game play and feel rather jarring.

Graphics - 8/10 - I didn't find the graphics to be the latest or greatest, but none the less they were very pretty. The artwork in the game was very gothic and I felt it was very professional. It's a shame some of the cutscenes felt very poorly rendered, they never were really impressive like the other thief games (I still get Goosebumps watching the original games cutscenes to this day).

Sound - 3/10 - Awful. Looping dialogue, broken cutscene audio, terrible voice acting, bad sound propagation. Half the time I had no idea where noises were coming from - a real shambles. Sound is what makes the Thief games so damn impressive after many years - sure the graphics of Thief 1 & 2 have aged but their sound engines are still extraordinary compared to most modern games. You could literally close your eyes and hear when a guard was approaching, you could hear every tile under your feet as you tiptoed around banks and cathedrals. But this new game fails utterly to recapture that feeling. A terrible shame in my opinion.

Re-playability - 6/10 - I felt the main story of the game was so bad I'd never re-play it again. However the saving grace for this game is the "side missions" that can be played via Basso. Thankfully they don't seem too bad, in fact I felt they were closer to the spirit of the original games than the main story. It was just a shame there aren't enough side missions to save this game from the terrible main storyline.

Overall - based on the five main elements I give this game 28/50 so around 6/10. For me the highlights of this game are the visuals and some of the sneaking game play is fun. But sadly I felt the game was badly let down by a terrible story, unforgivable sound bugs and some very odd design choices.

What a complete lack of effort and imagination. With the technology available and the open sandbox worlds such as Fallout and Assassin's Creed I expected far more than the small maps presented. It is supposed to be a city not a small village. Though the rooftop mazes were a nice touch. Making Garrets mechanical eye a limited use ability was also a foolish gimmick. Then there is the insulting lack of continuity with almost no reference to the pagans or hammerites or keepers. Even as a reboot they should have made honorable mention out of respect if nothing else. And why a reboot at all? I could go on but you get the point. Expand

Really wasn't that great. I'm kind of sad I bought it for it's opening price. It brings stealth and all that, but something just feels missing. Like a few other reviews say, if you're new to the franchise, go for it. It may be fun for you. But for those of us who have played the original Thief Gold and The Metal Age, I'd recommend you steer clear. It doesn't stay very true to the originals at all.

Square Enix is doing a bad job with the franchises they don`t build from the beginning.
e.g. Boss fights, you can ghost on all lvls too linear, glitchy.

It has some worthwhile moments, but it never reaches the heights of its predecessors and I never felt invested in the story. I found the missions a lot more enjoyable than navigating around the 'city' with its lifeless inhabitants. I feel it would have been a better game if they'd dropped that part completely and concentrated on creating more interesting missions like in the original.

First off, I figure I should scream at the graphics. But instead of screaming, i'll be kissing them. Thief is VERY pretty. The city, shadows, and textures are just plain...beautiful. The game takes place nearly at night, but that very stops it from looking good. Running it at Med. settings, the textures look about 100x better than most of the next-gen games. The same goes for the shadows. I mean, I want to say how realistic these look. Granted, I ran these at the max settings, but they look truly life-like. The city itself hasn't seen better days, graphically that is. Views over the city are rivaling Far Cry 3, and that's saying quite a bit. I almost forgot, the fires look beyond amazing, too. In short, if you want one of the prettier games to come out this year, pick this one up.

Now to the story. As I said, I've never played any of the other thief games, but here is my take on it:The City(Thats really what its called) has been overrun by a plague. Garret got some super powers, at the cost of your "girlfriends" life. You, for some reason, want to...uhh...save her or something? Frankly, after that. I really stopped caring. After a point, I just started to skip the cut-scenes and more or less zone out. So, if theres anything to be said about the story, it's that it's forgettable, annoying, and was a general waste of Development time.

Now to the all important gameplay. Well, its like Dishonored, just bad. *I'm not saying Thief is a D. Ripoff*. So, like I said. It revolves around sneaking around various places, to, well, steal stuff. But the stuff you steal isn't gold, or anything like that. Its magical objects, and documents, and stuff that aids in the shallow story. Granted, from time to time, you actually steal gold and the like. These rare missions of sneaking around and doing what Thief's do are amazing, and fun. But then back to the stealing documents...they are sadly more like the latest CoD game instead of a steal&stealth game. Action sequences, dull, forced combat, boss battles, and well, again, a lack of stealing makes these missions seem...weak.

About the Stealth. Its done decently well. If you are walking in water, or on glass, you will be louder, and the Ai will find you. The maps are laid out in a way where there is always quick and sneaky ways to get around, but the thing is that most levels are too small for me to bother with the stealthy road. Your bow will 1 hit kill every enemy(With a headshot) and unlike Dishonored, the game won't get harder if you go around killing everything.

Then in forced to use my stick. Like in thief games past, you,Garret, have a blackjack, a glorified stick. You can sneak up behind enemies and conk them on the head, which is all fine and dandy. But then when you get detected, your forced to engage in a sort of turn based fighting system. Not really, its in real-time, but well...The enemies hit you, you hit them, then you die. Unless,of course, you buy the focus upgrade that allows you to kill enemies in focus time. But aside from this, the combat its dull. You really cant make an escape, so if you get detected, you die.

So a summary:Thief is a incredible looking game that is quite shallow outside of that. Forgettable characters, a lackluster story, and bad gameplay make this really not worth while

Almost every time I've died in Thief reboot, I've died because I THOUGHT that Garrett can jump over a half meter high obstacle! The developers know where the player should go to finish a mission or to lose a chasing guard, imagination is not supported.

The difficulty in Thief reboot also feels quite cheap at many points: stairs are filled with porcelain and pathways are usually blocked by guard patallions instead of puzzles. Garrett feels like a clumsy guy who has found himself to be in a very hard situation. You never really are in control of his surroundings, you just hope for the best when moving forwards.

Ever since The Dark Project, I've always wondered what kind of cool things I'll someday see regarding the AI in stealth games, but unfortunately Thied reboot did not answer to that question. Ask Polly if you don't believe me.

Still, he game isn't bad, it has some really impressive things which show that the developers have some serious skills, but the game is simply missing "the essence" of a Thief game and you really can't tell what kind of game it really is. I sincerely hoped that Thief would set new standards to stealth genre, but it did not.

Even though most of the times I was either too bored or annoyed by some aspect of the game, I finished the game out of respect to the original series.

I had a big expectation about this 'Thief' reboot. But as a fan of the old game, I think it has delivered fairly but not lived up to the level I expected. Thief has some awkward design choices like:
I can't jump or climb in my own way. Only the character will automatically climb up or jump from some ledges whereas in some cases it will not. It makes the movement to feel a bit artificial.

Also in some cases I have to wait almost 5 minutes but still the guards will patrol in the same small area in same manner and I have nothing but to kill them which causes detection.
Now coming to the positive sides, using the shadows and the fabulous 'Swoop' ability, remaining undetected is really satisfying.
The game gives a high level of customization options to play as I wish, like I can turn the 'Focus' ability completely off and there are plenty of other options and the game favors this by rewarding. Also the graphics and world-detail is pretty good.
I had great hope from Eidos after playing Deus Ex Human Revolution which is among the best games I have ever played. But it feels that even being under action-rpg genre, Deus Ex HR was a more satisfying stealth game than Thief. Overall I am happy to play the game as a stealth-game fan but the game had opportunity to give us something more.

"Thief" is an alright game but seems to be a reboot rather than a continuation of the original series both in 'lore' and game-play. If you've never played any other of the games in the series you may enjoy this one but, if you have, you will probably find the newest incarnation of the Thief series rather vapid.

    Bottom line
The overuse of scripted events ruins the game.

However, it fails miserably to remake the game, or even come close to it.

There seems to be a backstory to it, but since this is my first 'thief' game, I don't know if it does, and even if it did, I don't know it.

What I don't like about this game is the controls, and I don't mean the buttons which are mapped to my keyboard, I mean the lack of freedom, in controls. For example, the routes you take are very limited, and even if you want to do something else, which you think will be smarter, let's say climb to the other roof and sneak past the enemy, if the developers didn't think of it, you can't do it. This is unlike Dishonored, which gives you the freedom to climb to any roof you want to, climb *almost* every object in the game, and control, almost again, everything you do in this game.

For Thief, most of the things you do are decided by the developers, what objects you climb, and what path you take. Although they try to tell you that you a CAN do whatever you want, kill or sneak past the enemy, it hasn't really proved that freedom of choice was it's objective when creating the game. This has caused the game to feel rather linear, and at times, boring.

This game is fun, don't get me wrong, if you like stealth games and don't mind mainstream storylines (don't expect any Bioshock or Dishonored), then this game is good for you. However, if you like deep storylines, with freedom of movement and decisions, then this game is not for you.

To complete this, the developers of this game have made it a fun game, if only considering the aspect of 'Stealth', but have failed to make it fun, if one is not only looking for stealth, but for other aspects of a game too.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not one of the Thief purists, or hardcore Thief fans, but I'm one of those who played TDP, TMA (still my favourite) and TDS when they were released. I absolutely fell in love with the games and their mythos and lore. So I was looking forward to this game very much, since the day the project was announced. I did not like the idea of the reboot, the new voice actor and I definitely did not like the idea to make it a console game, but I tried to keep my mind open and these were not a deal-breaker for me. I bought the game and played it. So, my impressions (I try to keep it simple):

    The good:

+ art design and graphics (I find them pretty immersive and good) - the new City looks great.
+ atmosphere: it has a very dark and sick atmosphere, not so much steam-punk, but more like noir.
+ it's still about stealth and thieving (and in that it's pretty enjoyable)
    + high customisability
+ various thieving activities (traps, alternative routes, lockpicking mechanics, paintings, hidden doors etc.)
    + toolset
    + side missions
+ open hub (I always wanted to roam the city streets freely)
+ sound design: while it is different and does not live up to the originals, it is still good.
+ it's a fun and entertaining stealth game despite its obvious flaws

    The mixed:

    * Voice acting: it's not bad, but it's not top-notch either and the lip-sync is all over the place at times.
    * loading zones: while they don't annoy me to death, I don't see why couldn't they make this game without loading zones.
    * narrative focus: Thief told its story via its setting, the places you visited, the brief encounters with characters, scriptures and by Garrett's monlogues. It's still present in a way but here it's more like a cinematic adventure. I'm not sure it was a good idea to make it like that (especially for the story not being that good).
    * cutscenes: While they give a cinematic feel to the game I find them unnecessary and immersion breaking at times.
    * references to the old games and lore: now is it a reboot or a sequel set in the distant future of the Theif-universe with another character who's name is Garrett? I have the impressiona that the devs. could not decide where to take the franchise... I feel confusion and undecidedness from these signs.
    * AI: sometimes it works very well and believable, other times it is all around the place. Thankfully, most of the time I experienced the former.

    The bad:

    - Garrett: I do not hate him, nor I like him, which is a problem since he is the main character of this game. At least I should care for him or relate to him in some way, but I can't. He is not a well established character: you don't get to know anything about him, his motivations, his backround or place in the world, while every character he meets treats him like a rock star: "oh, yeah Garrett, the loner master thief, who does not get involved in anything and was missing for a year" - a big "WTF?" for the writers and directors. What's this constant vocal reminder of what Garrett's profession and supposed main characteristic is. Also I don't get why didn't they give him a different name. Garrett was Garrett. This guy is a totally different character in personality and behaviour (has potential, but fell flat). Orzari's delivery is not bad, but sometimes he tries too hard to be the Garrett of the original series with his voice. It does not work very well.
    - The characters: these guys do have potential, but suffer from the same problem as Garrett: no character establishment, no character development, no real story arc for them. They just randomly go on and off the stage in the story. No direction again.
    - The lore: it's a strange mixture of the old and some vague new one. Again I just can't see where they wanted to take this game or potential series.
    - The story: It's cliched (of course it is... most games' stories are like that), but it is lacking in various ways. The handling and direction of the characters seems a bit aimless, as mentioned earlier. The story arc feels very incoherent. You feel like there are missing missions and scenes which were cut from the story for some reason. Too many - important - things happen off screen. The direction of the story remains a mistery from the beginning to the end. You never really find out what moves the characters (from the main character to the nemesis). There's literally no ending to the story, it just ends with some very brief, anticlimatic, vague and confusing scene. In one word: While it has potential the story, lore and characters are written and handled very poorly (even I could do it better). Something's very off here.
    - level design: the maps are pretty small and claustrophobic, plus the mission progression is very linear. A huge gripe of mine.
    - the hub world is pretty boring: empty homes (no npc-s), repetitive side activities.
    - bugs, glitches (not very many, but there are a few)
    - you feel a bit handheld and directed... not a good thing in a Thief game.

This game is worth it if you have spare cash lying around and an incredible GPU sitting in your rig. It's not really a MUST have for a PC Gamer, but it's a nice throwback that falls just short of being a very good piece.

Disregard the 10 reviews because this game is nowhere close to being a masterpiece, but disregard the low ratings too because at the end of the day this is still a very good game and a decent effort.

-Gameplay - the training level was challenging and fun. I set mostly all options for helping you out at OFF- like focus, direction etc, for a much realistic feeling. Overall the gameplay is great, feels like Thief. Tense hiding moments. I love the dialogue of the NPCs, very entertaining and believable.
I'm pretty hardcore when it comes to gaming style.
    The Bad -
    - cut-scenes had no sound at all !? wtf ?
    - weird glitches in keyboard controls. Sometimes the space bar does nothing, usually it works. Very irritating.
    - sound = plain stereo. I have an X-fi gamer sound card with some $$ Sennheiser headphones. Sound is critical in this game, but it sounds like mostly vanilla stereo sound all through.
-linear progression...no free roaming. Makes you always sure you're in a game, not in a city. Very disappointing.
-cant fall off of ledges ?? what the hell were they thinking ??
    - too much loot everywhere. The trademark of Theif is working hard to get a small amount of loot, so it feels awesome when you get something. This is easter egg hunting for kids...in fact the whole game feels like it was made for 10-12 year olds in some ways.

Sadly, this game is more of a "what could have been", then what it really is. I understand the company had issues, employees quitting, many set backs....I'm glad they got it out the door, however this could have been THE best Thief game ever, easily, with just a few modifications. I couldnt care less if the voice actor isnt the same dude...the new voice is just great too. These are picky details, imo.

I have to give it 7 at best.

And, as usual, the developers let us down.

Imagine Thief wherein, if I am caught on a side mission and/or defeated in combat (depending on the mode chosen) I fail that mission. And imagine this affecting my reputation, the availability of future gear and even jobs. Imagine each person's playthrough of Thief being just that little bit different, that little bit unique.

Just...don't get too fond of the idea. Cause that's not the game you'll play here.

Instead, we once again get a game whose developers thought they were making a movie. Every result of every pre-determined. All you have to do is keep reloading if you fail, and eventually, you'll unlock their pre-determined narrative experience. Every consequence of every action leading to nothing more than a binary win/lose dichotomy, with no middle ground. Just success of retry. Not even failure; just retry.

Sure the game nails first person movement. The atmosphere is good. The city is fairly well put together so far. I can even - almost - forgive the removal of Garret's snide humor in exchange for his role as a walking video game instruction manual. There's a solid Thief narrative here.

But its couched in yet another mediocre movie-wannabe video game. This remains the only entertainment medium whose audience has the potential to affect the outcome of the media they enjoy through direct participation.

Too bad video game developers can't seem to grasp the possibilities inherent in that truth.

    2. The colours are poor. Seems like someone thought a film-noir-esque palette of drab, washed-out shades would make it seem serious and dramatic; instead it just looks monotonous, lifeless and cheerless.

    3. The camera does weird things. Click on an item and the camera zooms in close to watch your hands pick it up. This is a serious pain in the arse and after a while made me feel sick as it shook and lurched about..

    4. It doesn't feel like a thief game - in fact, it looks and feels like Dishonoured. Dishonoured is a great game, but I wanted a "Thief" game.

    5. Graphics, apart from the colour palette are not too bad. But in places there are laughable errors. Right at the beginning I opened a window onto a bay .... and saw the water moving around. Only someone had screwed up the scale; instead of advancing and receding by say a metre or so, the water moved entire boat lengths in a second, so fast that any boats in the bay and the bridge itself would have been shaken to bits in moments. How could someone not notice this? It's right there as soon as you open the window almost at the very start?

    6. The writing is kind of blah. How about they start hiring real writers? If you've got a multi-million dollar franchise please spend a couple of hundred K on a real writer. The script as it is seems about the same level as fan fiction. Next time please get someone who writes real books.

    7. The game suffers from consolitis. A lot of the decisions (Linearity, small draw distances, no real exploring) are obviously constraints placed upon the designers by their decision to make it compatible with consoles. But that means they cannot use the PC's strengths: the large drive space and greater memory. So you get a "consolised" game: A game cut into small easily digestible chunks for consoles.

    8. The game is dumbed-down. A lot easier than earlier "Thief" games. That's fine if you like that sort of thing, and some people will. Casual gamers might like it. But if you're looking for a game that will challenge you or make you think, better look elsewhere.

To summarize: Meh. I'd rather play Thief 1, 2 or 3.

A pretty much mediocre game in every aspect, mostly due to poor leveldesign - I mean, seriously, a tunnel, a small hub to sneak, a tunnel, with long unneccessary "roam through the streets" parts? It's not a Deus Ex game, it's Thief!

There is not a lot of variation among enemies, mostly guards with swords or crossbows. However, that's alright, it's to be expected in a Thief game.

The stealth-play feels real and immersive. Picking locks is always fun, and I like how you can look through keyholes in doors, but I missed being able to gradually open doors. There are a lot of secret entrances, so it pays to keep an eye out for hidden switches and buttons.

The difficulty options are insane, they really went all out. Huge props to the developers for including a great variety of difficulty options as well as HUD options. There are also a lot of graphics options, which is nice.

The story is the worst part of the game. It really is a terrible, uninteresting mess, and a huge missed opportunity. With the exception of Garrett and - to some degree - Basso, I felt no connection with any of the characters. I couldn't care less what happened to them or what they did. A lot of the awful story is presented through poorly directed cutscenes, which does it no favors.

The controls are another weakness of Thief. It is clearly made with consoles in mind because they opted for combining the Swoop movement key (think of the Blink ability from Dishonored) and the Climb key, which frequently made me climb objects instead of using swoop to close the distance to my enemies. Frustrating. Also, there is no jump key. Huge mistake, IMO. You can only jump at certain points, like if your character is standing next to an object that can be climbed or a gap that can be jumped. They also nerfed the rope arrow, one of the most iconic tools in the Thief series. You can only shoot the rope arrow on to certain wooden beams, and only in one certain spot on that wooden beam. As you can see, rope arrows are very limited in their use, enforcing the impression that the developers want you to approach situations in a certain way. It restricts your movement options and for me, having played the previous games in the series, feels dumbed down and on rails.

I dislike the way the blackjack works. It feels clunky and very unresponsive to use, and I wish they had stuck with the way Thief: Deadly Shadows did it. The bow works very well, and there's a clear distinction between the different arrow types. However, like the rope arrow, certain arrows have extremely limited use. I never found a good way to use the Blast arrow, it was just expensive, rare and useless. The Flashbang works great, as does the Blunt arrow and Broadhead arrow. Being able to carry a bottle or glass jar to throw as a distraction works great.

Overall, it's an 'pretty good' game if you can live with the irrelevant story and dumbed down controls.

It's how a stand alone rebooting should be done but as a modern stealth game it is terribly linear. For those wanting to look for the old Thief universe you are in for a shocking disappointment. All there all to fight are the guards and the light. On the flip side of the coin, it nails the lifting of goods and pickpocketing. It grants a very satisfying feeling when picking a place clean. The upgrades are actually helpful and the open end gameplay leaves the sadly small city to be picked dry and ability to replay missions to acquire loot that couldn't be obtained before after buying upgrades.

The setting takes place as in a new world, Dark Project, Metal Age and Deadly Shadows never happened. This is a fresh start. As far as the story goes, don't even try to understand it and ignore the ending, easily the dumbest and confusing stories and lamest ending of a game I've seen in 2014. Once that is out of the way, the fun can begin of looting. It's a semi-sandbox that allows you to explore and take what you want.

The hideout, while a new feature is not needed. There is not really anything to do here except look at the unique loot that you have acquired. The levels are designed well and the difficulty factor can be customized. One of the biggest down falls is the almost 1:1 ratio to Dishonored. The text, menu, challenges and some of the story is an exact copy, I'm surprised lawsuits were not filed. There are options to take on jobs from your fence and only two clients. The client missions are fun but far too short and there's only two people. There are a lot more fence jobs but they too are far too short.

It's bland and rough around the edges but it gets the looting factor down. If there is a second it needs a lot of work such as more enemies, missions and much more jobs along with a customizable hideout. Old thieves might want to leave this on the shelf but it does a fair job for a new opening.

If you have played previous Thief games before and appreciate the atmosphere, the environment, how the game works and how difficult it was sometimes then this Thief game is around 5-6 (at tops) for you. Yes this is a Thief game and yes you steal stuff, hide in the shadows and 3+ guards still kick your little stealthy backside BUT this game is fulfilling those game dynamics in a "next gen game" way. First of all, it is Unreal Engine 3, not Dark Engine so problems about Unreal Engine still exists in this game. Sound stuttering can be a real pain and can really make you feel disturbed. Also, the way sound works is weird in this game. Unlike previous Thief games, in which you had no glowing effect on items or no focus eye that adds sparkles to your enemies so you had to listen to everything, this game doesn't have accurate sound effects. Sometimes, you can't pinpoint the location of your enemies or the engine just leads you to wrong conclusions about your environment. Another thing that disturbed me was all those mini-games and/or actions. For instance The City is not actually an open world environment, it is more like bunch of areas divided by loading zones, sometimes filled with button mashing games just to reach to an apartment and trust me, it loses its charm after 50th time. Finally the story is...kind of reminds you several other games. Characters are not well inserted into the atmosphere of the world and the story itself lacks sophistication or culture that previous Thief games had. Oh I almost forgot, they removed jumping action. You can jump only in certain places, which REALLY limits your freedom as a Thief. But instead of jumping, you have this "sweeping" action that allows you to swoop from a shadow to another, which is actually a great idea and really fun to use.

If this wasn't a Thief game and named something like "Shadow Walker: Man Of The Night", than I would rate it 8+. But unfortunately I have fantastic memories with the previous installments of this series and this game doesn't really make you feel like a Thief. It is both using a different engines that is completely a wrong choice or this game and changing game dynamics, which results in a limited gameplay. If you like stealth action games like Dishonored and never played other Thief games (that actually feels like you ARE a thief) I suggest you to play this game, you won't be disappointed. But please also try previous Thief games to see the difference.

The things I don't like are the same third person aspects that I hated about Deus Ex: Human Revolution. At least the frame rate for third person cinematics isn't capped at 30 like it was in Human Revolution. Gerrett is all right in my opinion, but the older voice actor definitely is better. Where it really falls short is the story. I have yet to understand what I'm doing. I was supposed to get some book for some reason that was never really explained well. Also the sound is really messed up. People sound right next to you when you're far from anybody. Overall, the feeling of being a thief is still there and the game is still fun to play. I love rogues. Period. The more points I can get for avoiding combat, the better. But this gets repetitive, sadly.

The atmosphere is fantastic. The catwalks and eyeballing the area to figure your pathing is fun, but there is little change in atmosphere. There's an underground ruin that seems to be an homage to Kingdom Hearts given the stained glass windows, that was neat. The stairway swivel bits were a nice touch. The asylum scared the crap out of me...I kept expecting Silent Hill static (think original) to fill my ears. Excellent atmosphere...no damn plot, so, no real replayability. I played it to the end, but, meh.

I guess I need more motivation. A reason to propel the character forward beyond some loose, cryptic bits and a guy offering you "work". I really don't care about sandboxing it, what's the story? What does Garrett want that I would give one rock hard turd of a care about? Mass Effect...you need to save the world. Dragon Age...ditto. Dishonored....just vengeance and the well-being of a little girl who adores you. These are all good reasons to play. Garrett doesn't really have one.

Also, how many silver ashtrays does a guy who doesn't smoke need? Ditto on the fountain pens. Even if he is writing a memoir, I don't think Garrett will need that many.

A full +1 for the godawful ridiculous of the paintings you can pilfer and keep in your private collection.

I actually find the graphics good with the exception of how the whole screen flashes when you move into light, which is excessive and distracting.

The major let down is the character motivations, or rather the complete lack of them after more than a full mission. There are games that have very slow starts as well such as Half-Life 1, but there the time is spent building atmosphere and introducing the world, whereas in thief it's spent crawling around a dingy city stealing silverware because.... money?

I wanted to think the levels became less linear later as the first was probably just a training mission but from what I've read online they stay pretty uninspired throughout.

So in closing, it's not a bad game, it's just a big let down compared to the legacy it represents and is a pale shadow of other recent games like deus ex and dishonored.

Level design was frustrating at times, especially with The City layout which was difficult to navigate and where some shortcuts would only unlock after doing certain tasks or reach a point in the game. I probably spent more time trying to understand how to navigate through The City than doing anything else.

The story wasn't very compelling. The characters had no charisma, and Erin was probably the character that I detested the most. Having her as a key character to the plot only made it more annoying.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

However, I myself have never played the original games. And that being said, I'm rather addicted to Thief 4. It's controls are easy grasp, and its movement mechanics are great for it's core purpose of being a stealth game. Physical conflict is something that is encouraged to be avoided, especially when there is more than one guard in the area, making the use of your tools and the shadows all the more fun. The story, while not a brilliant one, can still strike curiosity as you explore the city, read documents/newspapers that are lying around, and listen in on conversations.

That being said, I do feel a tad bit of dissappointment from what I was expecting upon hearing the announcement of the game. The maps are not quite as "open", and getting around some parts of the city are rather simplistic, not leaving much room for creativity in your movements. NPCs (not including guards) hardly interact or acknowledge you, and a lot of the apartment rooms you can break into on the streets never seem to have anyone at home, which, for me, breaks the tension that can keep you so immersed at times. Plus the "focus" ability, which can be incredibly handy from time to time, can still be used even when the focus meter has run dry, simply by repeatedly pressing the focus mode key. While this might not be a problem for some, it makes me feel dirty when I use it...

The game does have a few bugs, for example on ocassion sound levels change, making it hard to hear some conversation, or guards will ocassionally stop and spin in place for a minute or so. However there are already patches releasing to fix such issues, so the developers are at least staying on it.

Overall I do think this is a great game, even if it didn't meet my initial expectations.

Really? 0/10? Seems a little dramatic to me. Is the game a genre changing, award winning game of the year? Probably not. But is it fun? In my opinion, yes. Granted I never played any of the previous games, but taking the game at face value and not reading into the unnecessary amount of negative reviews, I'd say give it a try. You just might enjoy it.

I was looking forward to the reboot because I essentially wanted a thief game with updated graphics.

I was looking forward to the reboot because I essentially wanted a thief game with updated graphics.
Having spent 10 hours with the reboot, here's my take. First off, the game looks good. Not jaw dropping, but good. The developers have done a nice job of giving the game a period feel. Second, Stealing is fun. Some of the side quests and main missions create a great atmosphere where you actually feel like a contracted thief. One or two though, are pretty bland. Most of the animations are good, but some like closing a cabinet take too long. I would've also liked a single animation for picking up multiple pieces of loot at once. Certain windows do close behind you, but not doors, so I don't see where those complaints come from.

In my opinion, comparisons to Dishonored are unfair. This is a different type of game. I didn't enjoy the stealth in dishonored, it was always more fun to use magic offensively. In Thief, stealth is fun. It's all you have really. If you're up against more than 1 opponent, you generally won't survive. You're a thief not an armed robber.
The AI falls apart at rare times, but is mostly ok. The audio could've been better. The story is typical of the franchise. Take that for what you will. The City is a disappointment, feeling disjointed because of loading screens and a horrible map. Finding your way around sometimes becomes a chore. It feels more like a small town rather than a large city. Because of this, thief feels at times like a last gen game at times, instead of a current (8th) gen one. Hopefully we'll get a sequel where these issues will be addressed.

The levels are linear somewhat, but it is NOT a Call of Duty sneaker. There's no such thing. If you're good at Thief, you'll see very little action.

In spite of its failings, Thief remains a fun game. I don't compare it to its predecessors. I had an amazing time with those games as a kid but when i replayed them, the same sense of awe wasn't there. I loved Deus Ex, and Deus Ex:HR while fun, didn't hold a candle to that game in my mind. Played on its own merits, this reboot has enough going for it to give you a sneaky good time.

I realise it's a reboot and not a sequel, as one of the other reviewers comments, but I think if you're going to use the name of a series for your new game then you need to make sure the game feels like part of the series and I'm not sure this does.

I got bored very quickly and just can't be bothered to play some more. Perhaps I will come back to it but I really don't know when.

Maybe I'm and idiot but several missions stumped me the focus power felt balance, not over-powered. Sure the game is pretty linear, but since when has that been unacceptable. Occasionally, something things are a little clunky, but it doesn't overshadow anything. The bonus objectives each mission dish out extra gold (for you costly upgrades) giving each level a unique blend of both combat and stealth choices. Sure, there are not factions in this game and less paranormal/metaphysical paraphernalia so the storyline is blander. As far the AI/guards, well I would say they meet expectations. They are unobservant, but several times they kicked my ass, they aren't no pushovers! Don't get me wrong, this Thief is a horse of a different color but I like it! The elements they added and the elements they took away may have made the game more one-dimensional, but it also it a lot less tedious. I feel like a bad ass ninja when I play this game that has it's fair share or rewarding challenges. Seriously, poo poo on the naysayers. -The graphics are nice even if you run it on a bit lower settings, so there's eye candy even for 2-3 year old graphics cards, the graphics engine also seems to adapt really well to the situations, depending whether or not there is a lot of action on the screen. Albeit if you play on a 27" or a larger screen the texture's show a lot of saw/jagged edges. I myself use a 27" mainly, but when i hooked up my 32" they were more pronounced.
-Soundscape is brilliant fits the theme of the game like a hand in a tailor made glove.
-The controls work well and they feel responsive, no matter which hardware you use to play, keyboard and mouse or a mouse and small combo control device, or a pad.

    Cons:
-The physics sometimes get a bit wonky.
-Does not capture the overall feeling of the original game, the original game felt more intense, and you tended to die a lot faster in the original if the **** hit the fan.
-The game itself is on the short side, not worth the full price as far as content goes, This is one of many games to follow this sad trend :S

Overall 7/10, better than i feared it would be, worse than i wished.

The game itself isn't terrible, compared to a lot of previous half attempted reboots. It's not a perfect AAA game by any means but the price tag suggests to gamers that they should have made an attempt in which case a lot of polishing should have been done.

For one the AI is not perfect, in fact a long way from and very basic for today's standards. Such as a guy who is always taking a piss, he's always there pissing because the developers didn't program him to do anything else, not even walk around the bar for a bit before looping back around. Woman stood in the street checking there hair, and constantly doing it in a 5 second loop over and over again will annoy a lot of gamers. Some people don't get me wrong are walking around, just as watchmen patrolling and having conversations with one another (that being said if you go back to the same area later on they are having the same conversations).

When a game includes a benchmark test I don't see that as a good sign, in fact that tells me throughout the development they have probably been having issues with things like FPS and the general performance at times. I've not really had an issue with it however.

I remember the previous Thief games from years ago, however I was never drawn to them back then. In all fairness when you compare this remake to those of Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem Forever this isn't a bad remake and they've done a half decent job, unfortunately a half decent job in this industry generally isn't good enough.

The controller isn't too shabby and the dark setting is very nice, it's got a decent story behind it and quite a few hours of gameplay involved. For 19.99 you'll probably "just" get your moneys worth but I think Thief is going to be one of those games that's going to be on offer quite a lot so if you are mulling over weather to buy the game then I'd wait until then. You can actually buy it from certain licensing sites for under £10 in which yes, you more than get your moneys worth as was with the case for me.

For as many things is has right, it has a number of things it just didn't manged to get across. I think anything under 5 is being over critical and anything over 7 is just being too generous. But each to there own. I'm unsure of what kind of deadlines the developers had to work with which is one thing that many people do not take into consideration. Perhaps another 12 months of development could have seen this game go much further than what it actually ever will, even so in that case it isn't the developers fault. If they had lets say 2-3 years to work on this then yes, disappointing outcome.

As an experienced gamer I've generally enjoyed it so far, but it doesn't have the "can't pull myself away" effect. And once i've completed it I don't see myself ever going back to it, or rushing out to by any future DLC's for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a big fan of the Thief/Dark Project franchise. Those games are part the reasons why I'm studying video game creation. Everything in those games are amazing: the dark ambiance they put you in, like if you are a master of the shadow, the greed you have by trying to get 100% of the loot, the fun you have by creating a diversion to escape from the guards... They force you to think about every possible strategy to enter a building and discover every secrets. So far I've finished the Thief serie a multiple of times, a 100% complete without getting spotted or having to knock out anyone, and I was very happy when I learned that Thief 3 would have a sequel. Thief 4 was very fun to play, and the graphics were amazing, but a few things were missing, and I hope to see those things in a Thief 5. Here is my full review of Thief 4, playing on Master difficulty, ghost gameplay...

    Visuals/Sounds/Ambiance:
The graphics are amazing. There is enough polygons on characters so that we don't see much of their edges. The clothes they wear, the weapons they have, everything is well-made. The streets look very realistic. They don't seem empty at all. They are full of small things like boxes, barrels, vases, merchant stalls, carts and rubbish. The textures are also great. You can see that a lot of work as been put into those. The leather looks rough and worn, the velvet looks soft and expensive, the stones and wooden planks look dirty and cold, and you can even see skin pores on characters! The lights and shadows that help you across the levels are very well used. Not too much shadows to make it easy to travel, and not too much light that would seem overdone. Torches, street lamps, oil lamps and "primal effect" do a really good job to create the mood. The music is great as well. I was very surprised to hear dubstep, but I found it a good idea. I also liked the fact that the music change drastically when you are spotted. Good job

    Mechanics/Missions:
The mechanics were very easy to understand. You have the same weapons from before and the same way to move without being seen. There's one thing that really annoyed me, you cannot jump!!! You can't ask me to play a first person game without being able to jump. Sometime a jump can save your life... I still had the feeling that people playing the predatory way were more rewarded than people playing the rightful way. There was some loots almost inaccessible unless by knocking out guards, either because you had to be in the lights for too long or because guards from very far could see you... a bug maybe? There is also the part were you slip yourself between planks and crates by holding E. In the middle of the transition, you have to press E very fast to move a plank. I didn't understood what was the utility of this action in the gameplay, maybe if the player could damage his health by not pressing E fast enough would be better. I also found the missions easy. To enter the building, you have 3 choices: Front door, opened window or the ventilation grid. In the other Thief games, you could use the sewers, find multiple secret panels, use underground ways and even use the fireplace. Usually, there is so many ways to go to an objective that you don't usually escape by the way you went in. There was also not enough civilians or guards, it was so easy to move that I always though that something would jump from behind.

    The narrative:
The narrative is what deceived me in this game. I was very eager to see Viktoria again. She is a major character of the main story, and in Thief 3, it looked almost as if you would see her again. She took your eye for Constantine in Thief 1 and she saved you from father Karras in Thief 2. I though that she would be in Thief 4, but nope. She has to be in Thief 5. She brings so much mysteries in Garrett's world. I was also very surprise that they was no mention of Garrett's mechanical eye that replaced the one that Viktoria took. Didn't Constantine whispered in Garrett's mind that he would come back to take the other one? When Garrett steals from a museum in Thief 3, he find his lost eye on a statue and when you approach it, you can hear Constantine voice...At least Basso was still there.

In conclusion: Thief 4 is amazing regarding the graphics and the ambiance, but the mission are too shorts, too easy and had the felling that there was only one way to do them, regardless of wanting to be detected or not. The fact that there was only 2 characters from the prequels was very deceiving. I'm still going to play Thief 4 a second time to try to finish it at 100%, but I will not have as much fun as with Thief 1, 2 or 3. I hope there will be a Thief 5, with the real sequel, with Viktoria, maybe with Keepers or with Constantine, or with the Lost city for a fourth time. :)

This bunch of various killjoys aside, the analysis is, as always, subjective. The plot is plain and uninteresting, the characters forgettable, the sound system is dumbed down and the levels are more linear and cutted by loading times. It's all true, and there are other little things like the rope arrow that you can shoot only in some spots, and the moss arrow that's gone for good, and the map is a mess, and away with all that. Yes, that's sadly real.
    BUT
As a Thief series veteran, and Dark Mode contributer, my opinion is that this fourth installment is immersive like very few before it. The sensation of being a thief is here, crystal and sharp like a knife. The atmosphere, grim and gothic, the sense of persistent danger, it's all here. The slow progress from a dark corner to another, the silent approaching to the unwary guard, the hands taking what is yours to soon become mine, the thieving essence is still there, and better than before.
I believe Thief is not a perfect game. It suffers of many weak points: plot and level design the ugliest of them. Still, if you can put them aside, you will spend 20 hours like a real thief.

Anyway the game should of been about thieving (after all you are a thief) and not saving the world and damsel in distress (Authors obviously lacked imagination in that regard). Melee combat could of been better. Jobs range from small to big and are mostly interesting. There are a lot of documents and papers scattered around that let you learn more about the world and people (you are robbing) Expand

Thief was a pretty much expected game, and I wish I could give it a better score :/

So, everything in the game is good: gameplay, sounds, story, graphics. But that's it, it doesn't have enough to be an outstanding game as I thought it'd be. The strongest point is it's one of the best stealth games I've ever played. The mechanics work really well, and you have to watch and plan every step, otherwise you might just fail

It's sadly an overpriced game, but still worth playing

I enjoyed the new Thief quite a bit, is it as good as the original? Of course not, it definitely has some serious issues, but I would still classify it as a good game. Visuals are great, I love the art style, dark city in the vein of old London or Prague with grey skies, rain, dirt, the atmosphere is really good. In some levels such as the brothel underground the mood is fantastic, and in the Moira Asylum it's basically a horror experience, those were the 2 highlights of the game for me. Stealth mechanics are mostly working well, spending most of the time in shadows, avoiding light, using sounds and darkness to your advantage, but the main problem for me was the lack of freedom. You are too restricted, no longer you have tons of options how to solve the level, you can't even jump, only on the scripted places, where developers want you too, the same with rope arrows that you can use on just a few prepared spots. Instead of running around the city freely in the night, jumping on rooftops as a true master thief, you are just searching for those scripted places where you can jump, it's restricting as hell and this basically killed all the potential of being a great game. The map is also pretty terrible and ugly. I heard many negative comments about the story and honestly I didn't really mind... until the end. The end is really bad, cheesy and feels like some bad cliche b-movie. Also, I didn't appreciate the bugs, the optimization in some places, bad audio balance, volume off pretty often, cutting off early, subtitles out of sync, even half a year after the release and still not patched, amateurs. But for the most part I had a good time and I still enjoyed my play-through that took me about 15 hours including all the side missions. 7/10 Expand

So does this game bring the franchise back to its former glory... Sort of. But I think the thing us gamers are most interested in is the stealth, which is flipping awesome! Even the slightest mistake could end in death, and to stay out in off the shadows is certain doom. This is all brought up by the fantastic level design, which gives the player almost life like amounts of freedom. In addition to this, the games graphics are amazing, they're even better than Battlefield 4! However, the games UI is awful, making it hard to select the weapon you want, resulting in some frustrating parts. Also, the AI is some of the worst I've ever seen! For example, at one point in the game I saw two guards, headshoted one of them, and the other one, standing right next to didn't even notice! WTF! And, the story is terrible, mainly because it tries to be more than it is. This is all hindered by Garret's appalling new voice actor, who never puts any expression into anything! If I was to judge thief purely on gameplay it would get a ten, but it's marred by so many technical issues that take you out of the immersion. Expand

Don't be fooled by the unkind words said in some reviews. I have, like many of those not appreciating this version, played the previous versions - loved them all.
I liked that they had the guy who did voice acting in Mass Effect 3 (the sniper alien can't remember his name now) as the guy who voiced Garrett, even though he wasn't the original voice of Garrett(?)
I was just a tiny bit

I was just a tiny bit disappointed that the general look of it seemed not too far removed (except in quality, which was pretty outstanding) from the previous Thief games, and I have to say that I didn't really like the plot either, but I did enjoy playing this one. The FMV sequences were able to be skipped - which having gone through the in-game movie of Tomb Raider I was pretty pleased about - but I still watched them all once just to get the idea of what the story was.
I thought it was a very polished effort, great graphics, loved the particle effects and the lighting on this one. Didn't like having to shift the same plank of wood every now and then, and don't think my keyboard appreciates having to mash a key to open a window, but it wasn't too far removed from what could be expected.
It's not excellent to the nth degree, but it's definitely worth getting hold of.
I think the only thing I wasn't too happy about was the light gem - whereas in the original you had a purple/blueish hue around Garrett when he was in shadow, we now have a little gem in the corner that seems to only go from white to grey to black in three very short steps. I didn't really like that little bit about it, but generally, the game was fun to play and I would recommend Thief fans play it if they haven't already.

Pretty good game given its price on sale. It looks good, movement and combat is fluid and fun. AI is OK.
Stealthy and opportunistic plays are reasonably rewarding - balancing it for people who aren't as patient.
The thieving mechanics are pretty braindead though, it makes you feel like a chinese goldfarmer looting everything that is available. lockpicking goes into the same category.

It has no unique elements or mechanics going for it. It is, however, enjoyable enough for a single playthrough without too high expectations, definitely not at full price though.

Thief is a generally "alright" game, it's just that a few factors, like the map being poorly created and only being able to use rope arrows on certain surfaces, let it down. Also, for $19.99 on Steam, I'd expect more than eight quick chapters of game play and a better storyline.

I'm about halfway through playing this game, and I am enjoying it so far. Another element I'm missing is the drunken guards, they were always good for a chuckle in the game. Although, my biggest complaint has to be the worlds that Garrett explore. They are pretty generic looking...making it hard to distinguish one area from another at times. With that being said, I'm still enjoying the game, although not as much as the earlier Thief games. Thief's gameplay mechanics are fairly conventional when it comes to modern stealth games. Level design is not too shabby when it comes to the actual missions themselves, however the city hub has a senseless layout and is littered with loading screen transitions. Writing is poor, side characters are lacking in depth as are many of the side missions excluding the client jobs. The story starts off somewhat intriguing but eventually turns to **** towards the ending.

It's also quite obvious there was a clash of creative vision during the game's development, which ends up giving the impression that the Thief reboot isn't quite sure what sort of game it wants to be. A slow, methodical stealth game, or a bombastic and cinematic experience. Thief ultimately tries to be both and ends up not quite hitting the heights it aspired to reach. Despite all these flaws and areas of improvement, I still somehow managed to enjoy it for the most part. Give Thief reboot a go you've run out of stealth games to play. It's not too bad, but know that it's not particularly memorable and there are better games out there.

This new Thief does a lot things right but can still be rather clumsy at times. Definitely worth trying, though. [Issue #240]
