I was so excited to play this game after seeing the trailer that made it look way better than it actually was. I was disappointed. The game has so many flaws, including the fact that you CAN'T JUMP. You can only jump when there are certain objects, in a certain spot, of a certain height, right in front of you. Also, when you're standing on a roof or high wooden plank, you can't fall off. The game does this idiotic thing where Garrett just crouches over the edge and won't move unless you make him. That takes away any challenge or risk of falling off. It misses the whole point of being up high. The "tips" portion of the loading screen always hints to "search around the city, because you never know what you might find." Trust me, it's completely predictable what you'll find; useless gold coins and cheap cups and silverware that'll take hours of picking up to actually accumulate enough money to buy something. Also, do NOT get into a fight with the guards. Garrett is unrealistically weak, and you have almost no chance of winning if you're fighting more than one person without using food that you barely have enough of, because your inventory can only be so small.
The graphics are terrible. We live in 2014!!! They could have easily made the graphics so much clearer. It looks like they just got lazy.
The story line is weak, doesn't add up, and so many things don't make sense or are left out. You find yourself thinking "But what happened to ____?" or "What was the point of that entire scene?"

What I disliked most about the game was probably the fact that guards can detect you, chase you, CLEARLY SEE where you ran off to, and then forget where you went just a second later. If someone watches you run and hide in a closet, they somehow have no idea where you went, and don't bother to check anywhere. Also, you can have the entire city after you one second, hide for a minute or two, go back outside, and everyone forgot that anything happened.

Save your money and wait for an actual game that's worth what you paid for.

Square Enix is doing a bad job with the franchises they don`t build from the beginning.
e.g. Boss fights, you can ghost on all lvls too linear, glitchy.

Im not a fan, but it didn't catch me as other Thief games. A very simpe soulless game.

It has some worthwhile moments, but it never reaches the heights of its predecessors and I never felt invested in the story. I found the missions a lot more enjoyable than navigating around the 'city' with its lifeless inhabitants. I feel it would have been a better game if they'd dropped that part completely and concentrated on creating more interesting missions like in the original.

Most of the time you steal stuff worth less than the value of a single arrow. The major scores you acquire you are generally forced to horde in your collection gaining you no money. Most major missions after requiring a huge effort also bank little if any cash. Loot a huge, massively defended vault; get a shard of something or other that makes you hallucinate and vault is otherwise empty.

Stealth is also weak. This is another critical element for this type of game, and it just doesn't work all that well. Mostly it comes down to the mechanics just feeling inconsistent. Sometimes when your character is behind cover AND in the dark he still gets seen by random non-alert NPCs. Sometimes he doesn't.

The graphics look great in general. Scenery is bleak but fairly realistic. Sound and dialogue are also decent.

Upgrades feel sorta lackluster. There is some choice but skill points are few and far between, and total available options are minimal.

Overall, its another case of all the development effort going to the console version. The PC version is not optimized to play to its strengths and suffers from awkward controls that are poorly translated from the console version.

This could have been so much better.

Boring plot set in a tiny city.
    Had regular frame rate drops
Not a bad game per se, but if you enjoyed the original series it would probably be best to avoid this one
If you HAVE to buy it rather wait for it to go on sale

Totally generic and uninspired. It tries to copy so many other games that it completely fails to make its own identity. The setting interested me and, initially during the prologue, the looting interested me. That's it. Everything else was a disappointment. There's absolutely no reason to play this travesty when you can get Dishonored instead.

Not worth it unless you have a fetish for boredom.

Very limited, heavily scripted, barely stealth game. Basically just climbing all over the (small) city, which is not even open and has a loading screen for every small apartment, you'll be stealing more money and valuables from poor citizens than having any exciting treasure lootery. Full life of a mediocre cutlery burglar guaranteed.

All the equipment will be available to you fairly soon, so there will be no incentive to gauge the money or steal at all. Which leaves you hunting for collectibles. Useless, boring, copypaste collectibles to store in dusty cases at your base. That you will barely even ever visit.

What are the collectibles? Oh why, a great variation of them, ofcource! I.e. Ring with blue stone, ring with red stone, ring with white stone, ring with green stone, ring with purple stone, ring with light blue stone... (as you guess the model stays the same, its just the skin) Then we have a brooch with blue stone, brooch with red stone, brooch with green stone...

What exciting treasures to hunt for, huh? You bet.

The story and characters are a perfect match.
Garrett is boring as all hell, an **** and a... nothing. I can't find anything to describe him with, since the game didn't give me anything. Garret is just a boring **** Thats it.

The story is some simple go-on-search-for an unrelated character without any proper exposition, makes you wonder why the heck are you even moving on, and that paranormal sauce all over it made me cringe god knows how many times throughout the playthrough.

Instead I'll just post one example of many of what kind of "casual audience" they're targeting for Call of Thiefy 4. This is a genuine objective from Mission 1:-

    "Get 4 Headshots"

    Headshots. In Thief...

When playing a Khajiit in Skyrim or replaying a 1998 game gives you a better "Thief" experience than 2014 Thief, you know the franchise is now dead...

Do yourself a favor, go buy the original trilogy dirt cheap on GOG, then treat yourself to Dishonored if you haven't already played it, which although different from Thief, doesn't actively take the p*ss and insult your intelligence like this putrid train-wreck masquerading as a "Thief sequel"...

First off, I figure I should scream at the graphics. But instead of screaming, i'll be kissing them. Thief is VERY pretty. The city, shadows, and textures are just plain...beautiful. The game takes place nearly at night, but that very stops it from looking good. Running it at Med. settings, the textures look about 100x better than most of the next-gen games. The same goes for the shadows. I mean, I want to say how realistic these look. Granted, I ran these at the max settings, but they look truly life-like. The city itself hasn't seen better days, graphically that is. Views over the city are rivaling Far Cry 3, and that's saying quite a bit. I almost forgot, the fires look beyond amazing, too. In short, if you want one of the prettier games to come out this year, pick this one up.

Now to the story. As I said, I've never played any of the other thief games, but here is my take on it:The City(Thats really what its called) has been overrun by a plague. Garret got some super powers, at the cost of your "girlfriends" life. You, for some reason, want to...uhh...save her or something? Frankly, after that. I really stopped caring. After a point, I just started to skip the cut-scenes and more or less zone out. So, if theres anything to be said about the story, it's that it's forgettable, annoying, and was a general waste of Development time.

Now to the all important gameplay. Well, its like Dishonored, just bad. *I'm not saying Thief is a D. Ripoff*. So, like I said. It revolves around sneaking around various places, to, well, steal stuff. But the stuff you steal isn't gold, or anything like that. Its magical objects, and documents, and stuff that aids in the shallow story. Granted, from time to time, you actually steal gold and the like. These rare missions of sneaking around and doing what Thief's do are amazing, and fun. But then back to the stealing documents...they are sadly more like the latest CoD game instead of a steal&stealth game. Action sequences, dull, forced combat, boss battles, and well, again, a lack of stealing makes these missions seem...weak.

About the Stealth. Its done decently well. If you are walking in water, or on glass, you will be louder, and the Ai will find you. The maps are laid out in a way where there is always quick and sneaky ways to get around, but the thing is that most levels are too small for me to bother with the stealthy road. Your bow will 1 hit kill every enemy(With a headshot) and unlike Dishonored, the game won't get harder if you go around killing everything.

Then in forced to use my stick. Like in thief games past, you,Garret, have a blackjack, a glorified stick. You can sneak up behind enemies and conk them on the head, which is all fine and dandy. But then when you get detected, your forced to engage in a sort of turn based fighting system. Not really, its in real-time, but well...The enemies hit you, you hit them, then you die. Unless,of course, you buy the focus upgrade that allows you to kill enemies in focus time. But aside from this, the combat its dull. You really cant make an escape, so if you get detected, you die.

So a summary:Thief is a incredible looking game that is quite shallow outside of that. Forgettable characters, a lackluster story, and bad gameplay make this really not worth while

Almost every time I've died in Thief reboot, I've died because I THOUGHT that Garrett can jump over a half meter high obstacle! The developers know where the player should go to finish a mission or to lose a chasing guard, imagination is not supported.

The difficulty in Thief reboot also feels quite cheap at many points: stairs are filled with porcelain and pathways are usually blocked by guard patallions instead of puzzles. Garrett feels like a clumsy guy who has found himself to be in a very hard situation. You never really are in control of his surroundings, you just hope for the best when moving forwards.

Ever since The Dark Project, I've always wondered what kind of cool things I'll someday see regarding the AI in stealth games, but unfortunately Thied reboot did not answer to that question. Ask Polly if you don't believe me.

Still, he game isn't bad, it has some really impressive things which show that the developers have some serious skills, but the game is simply missing "the essence" of a Thief game and you really can't tell what kind of game it really is. I sincerely hoped that Thief would set new standards to stealth genre, but it did not.

Even though most of the times I was either too bored or annoyed by some aspect of the game, I finished the game out of respect to the original series.

I had a big expectation about this 'Thief' reboot. But as a fan of the old game, I think it has delivered fairly but not lived up to the level I expected. Thief has some awkward design choices like:
I can't jump or climb in my own way. Only the character will automatically climb up or jump from some ledges whereas in some cases it will not. It makes the movement to feel a bit artificial.

Also in some cases I have to wait almost 5 minutes but still the guards will patrol in the same small area in same manner and I have nothing but to kill them which causes detection.
Now coming to the positive sides, using the shadows and the fabulous 'Swoop' ability, remaining undetected is really satisfying.
The game gives a high level of customization options to play as I wish, like I can turn the 'Focus' ability completely off and there are plenty of other options and the game favors this by rewarding. Also the graphics and world-detail is pretty good.
I had great hope from Eidos after playing Deus Ex Human Revolution which is among the best games I have ever played. But it feels that even being under action-rpg genre, Deus Ex HR was a more satisfying stealth game than Thief. Overall I am happy to play the game as a stealth-game fan but the game had opportunity to give us something more.

It’s more like Thief 4: find the randomly/stupidly placed switch and voila, “puzzle” solved (as a side note, turning off focus will make you want to kill yourself because of how utterly random the switch finding trash is). What the hell were they thinking including that in the game? The puzzles should be stealth related: how to get through areas, guards, etc. but there’s actually not much of that. It should be very central to the game yet you end up spending a lot more of your time doing something else, even in story related missions.

And quite a lot of that something else is “go forward in a narrow corridor” pseudo movie garbage with a lot of scripted stuff, if not outright interactive animations or boring mini games. Blatant case of idiots thinking they’re good game designers just because they use what they learned in their graphics/animation design classes as much as they can. If I want to see a f****** movie I’m gonna go rent an actual one… but I want to play an actual game, not a “tag along for the ride mr. 12 year old ADD console casutard” kind of game. And then there’s the animations for picking up stuff and disabling guards… who with an IQ over 80 can actually think this adds anything to the game? Not only is it a gigantic waste of time but it can actually get you out of shadows and expose you (the item pickup animation) or make you waste precious time after disabling a guard (forces you to stand there like a retard when you’re dying to go hide because you know there’s another guard coming). Overall a lot of the design decisions are just plain retarded.

On the technical side of things, almost everything is subpar except for graphic quality:

Sound rendering: this is arguably the worst aspect of this game. If there’s a game type that needs good sound it’s a stealth one but in thief… sounds often go straight through roofs/floors and the angle/distance from which they come is vague at best (especially distance). I’ve often gone wtf realizing a guy I thought was very close to me was actually 30 feet away or vice-versa, if not on a whole different floor (just lol). I think every first person game I ever played has better sound rendering than thief.

Physics: overall it feels a bit sloppy which is bad for a game in which accurate control over your character is important, not to mention the lack of freedom (can’t jump and all that other nonsense).

Stealth system: it’s bad on many levels.
    - Light is all or nothing with no in between. It’s very simplistic and it contributes to the second point.
    - As a whole it feels rather random, I’ve been spotted from 10 feet in very dark places not moving at all… and at times I’ve gotten away with stuff/mistakes that I thought would get me spotted for sure (master difficulty). I’ve gone almost through the whole game and I still have little confidence in what I can and can’t do. Other thief games gave you a lot of confidence and in fact even most shooters are a lot better. System as a whole is just bad.
    - Footsteps, they have pretty much thrown that aspect of the game to the curb, 95% of the time you won’t give a f*** what surface you’re on since it doesn’t make any difference, as long as you avoid specific spots (glass and water) which are not very common at all. There are no moss arrows and frankly you don’t need them, that’s how much they cared.

Lastly, it is a console abortion of a PC game with the typical symptoms: can’t bind anything, limited savegames and hold this button for 0.5 second please. For example, flash bombs are bound to 9… not exactly handy when you want to get out of a sticky situation. Sooner or later you’ll hit 0 instead of 9 trying to be quick and end up with a bottle in your hand… and a sword in your face.

I’m not even sure you should wait for a discount, this is pretty much diablo 3/total war rome 2 kinda stuff: another great series getting annihilated by a game that not only isnt as good as the previous ones, but isnt even objectively average.

Here's what the game is actually about: You are put in tiny sections where you basically have to get from A to B. Which are like 20 meters apart usually so far.
The game doesn't even let you check out the environment to seek different ways to get past the obstacles to reach your goal because you can't properly move freely. You can't even jump yourself. Try jumping over from one building

No what about the thieving part? Well, since it's not hard or tactical to reach your price there's no fun in getting it in the first place. Besides that you'll spend a lot of time picking up completely useless garbage to reach some stupid achievements like finding all the garbage in a certain level.

I have to make the comparison with Dishonored here as it sure attracts the same audience, and it sure looks a lot alike.
Take Dishonored, replace the controls with really crappy ones, change the levels so you have as much choice as you'd have in Crash Bandicoot - voila. Now make the characters and the story as boring as it can get: You have Thief.

"Thief" is an alright game but seems to be a reboot rather than a continuation of the original series both in 'lore' and game-play. If you've never played any other of the games in the series you may enjoy this one but, if you have, you will probably find the newest incarnation of the Thief series rather vapid.

    Bottom line
The overuse of scripted events ruins the game.

There are many things to like about this game, while there are also, many things to hate. It is true, this game is very much like Dishonored, it's a stealth game, and there seems to be a disease that has caused many people to die, resulting in a very 'dark' story. However, it fails miserably to remake the game, or even come close to it.

However, it fails miserably to remake the game, or even come close to it.

There seems to be a backstory to it, but since this is my first 'thief' game, I don't know if it does, and even if it did, I don't know it.

What I don't like about this game is the controls, and I don't mean the buttons which are mapped to my keyboard, I mean the lack of freedom, in controls. For example, the routes you take are very limited, and even if you want to do something else, which you think will be smarter, let's say climb to the other roof and sneak past the enemy, if the developers didn't think of it, you can't do it. This is unlike Dishonored, which gives you the freedom to climb to any roof you want to, climb *almost* every object in the game, and control, almost again, everything you do in this game.

For Thief, most of the things you do are decided by the developers, what objects you climb, and what path you take. Although they try to tell you that you a CAN do whatever you want, kill or sneak past the enemy, it hasn't really proved that freedom of choice was it's objective when creating the game. This has caused the game to feel rather linear, and at times, boring.

This game is fun, don't get me wrong, if you like stealth games and don't mind mainstream storylines (don't expect any Bioshock or Dishonored), then this game is good for you. However, if you like deep storylines, with freedom of movement and decisions, then this game is not for you.

To complete this, the developers of this game have made it a fun game, if only considering the aspect of 'Stealth', but have failed to make it fun, if one is not only looking for stealth, but for other aspects of a game too.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not one of the Thief purists, or hardcore Thief fans, but I'm one of those who played TDP, TMA (still my favourite) and TDS when they were released. I absolutely fell in love with the games and their mythos and lore. So I was looking forward to this game very much, since the day the project was announced. I did not like the idea of the reboot, the new voice actor and I definitely did not like the idea to make it a console game, but I tried to keep my mind open and these were not a deal-breaker for me. I bought the game and played it. So, my impressions (I try to keep it simple):

    The good:

+ art design and graphics (I find them pretty immersive and good) - the new City looks great.
+ atmosphere: it has a very dark and sick atmosphere, not so much steam-punk, but more like noir.
+ it's still about stealth and thieving (and in that it's pretty enjoyable)
    + high customisability
+ various thieving activities (traps, alternative routes, lockpicking mechanics, paintings, hidden doors etc.)
    + toolset
    + side missions
+ open hub (I always wanted to roam the city streets freely)
+ sound design: while it is different and does not live up to the originals, it is still good.
+ it's a fun and entertaining stealth game despite its obvious flaws

    The mixed:

    * Voice acting: it's not bad, but it's not top-notch either and the lip-sync is all over the place at times.
    * loading zones: while they don't annoy me to death, I don't see why couldn't they make this game without loading zones.
    * narrative focus: Thief told its story via its setting, the places you visited, the brief encounters with characters, scriptures and by Garrett's monlogues. It's still present in a way but here it's more like a cinematic adventure. I'm not sure it was a good idea to make it like that (especially for the story not being that good).
    * cutscenes: While they give a cinematic feel to the game I find them unnecessary and immersion breaking at times.
    * references to the old games and lore: now is it a reboot or a sequel set in the distant future of the Theif-universe with another character who's name is Garrett? I have the impressiona that the devs. could not decide where to take the franchise... I feel confusion and undecidedness from these signs.
    * AI: sometimes it works very well and believable, other times it is all around the place. Thankfully, most of the time I experienced the former.

    The bad:

    - Garrett: I do not hate him, nor I like him, which is a problem since he is the main character of this game. At least I should care for him or relate to him in some way, but I can't. He is not a well established character: you don't get to know anything about him, his motivations, his backround or place in the world, while every character he meets treats him like a rock star: "oh, yeah Garrett, the loner master thief, who does not get involved in anything and was missing for a year" - a big "WTF?" for the writers and directors. What's this constant vocal reminder of what Garrett's profession and supposed main characteristic is. Also I don't get why didn't they give him a different name. Garrett was Garrett. This guy is a totally different character in personality and behaviour (has potential, but fell flat). Orzari's delivery is not bad, but sometimes he tries too hard to be the Garrett of the original series with his voice. It does not work very well.
    - The characters: these guys do have potential, but suffer from the same problem as Garrett: no character establishment, no character development, no real story arc for them. They just randomly go on and off the stage in the story. No direction again.
    - The lore: it's a strange mixture of the old and some vague new one. Again I just can't see where they wanted to take this game or potential series.
    - The story: It's cliched (of course it is... most games' stories are like that), but it is lacking in various ways. The handling and direction of the characters seems a bit aimless, as mentioned earlier. The story arc feels very incoherent. You feel like there are missing missions and scenes which were cut from the story for some reason. Too many - important - things happen off screen. The direction of the story remains a mistery from the beginning to the end. You never really find out what moves the characters (from the main character to the nemesis). There's literally no ending to the story, it just ends with some very brief, anticlimatic, vague and confusing scene. In one word: While it has potential the story, lore and characters are written and handled very poorly (even I could do it better). Something's very off here.
    - level design: the maps are pretty small and claustrophobic, plus the mission progression is very linear. A huge gripe of mine.
    - the hub world is pretty boring: empty homes (no npc-s), repetitive side activities.
    - bugs, glitches (not very many, but there are a few)
    - you feel a bit handheld and directed... not a good thing in a Thief game.

I didn't expect Thief to launch with Mantle (which it was supposed to) on the PC given the tremendous amount of bugs in the BF4 roll-out. Plus Mantle is now surely aimed more to boost performance for low-to-mid end hardware. On high end rigs, the gain is now minimal to none compared to DirectX.

This game is worth it if you have spare cash lying around and an incredible GPU sitting in your rig. It's not really a MUST have for a PC Gamer, but it's a nice throwback that falls just short of being a very good piece.

Disregard the 10 reviews because this game is nowhere close to being a masterpiece, but disregard the low ratings too because at the end of the day this is still a very good game and a decent effort.

    2) Boring, uninteresting plot

    3) Stupid mini cutscenes that take away control from you in typical consolitis fashion. For example, knock out a guard and you are locked out of control for 5 seconds while Garrett lovingly lowers the unconscions guard to the ground

    5) The devs who made this game are sexual deviants. One mission forces you to watch five pornographic scenes. Yes I am not kidding you, you are forced to watch pornography over and over again, five times in a row, to solve a mission. I am talking about the brothel mission. It's so sad that porn addicts are given jobs as game devs.

    6) The game constantly deletes your savegames. I spent two hours working my way through the seventh mission, only to find that when I clicked the "Continue" button it deleted my manual saves and made me restart the seventh mission. Please fire the losers who made this garbage worthless sequel of a game.

-Gameplay - the training level was challenging and fun. I set mostly all options for helping you out at OFF- like focus, direction etc, for a much realistic feeling. Overall the gameplay is great, feels like Thief. Tense hiding moments. I love the dialogue of the NPCs, very entertaining and believable.
I'm pretty hardcore when it comes to gaming style.
    The Bad -
    - cut-scenes had no sound at all !? wtf ?
    - weird glitches in keyboard controls. Sometimes the space bar does nothing, usually it works. Very irritating.
    - sound = plain stereo. I have an X-fi gamer sound card with some $$ Sennheiser headphones. Sound is critical in this game, but it sounds like mostly vanilla stereo sound all through.
-linear progression...no free roaming. Makes you always sure you're in a game, not in a city. Very disappointing.
-cant fall off of ledges ?? what the hell were they thinking ??
    - too much loot everywhere. The trademark of Theif is working hard to get a small amount of loot, so it feels awesome when you get something. This is easter egg hunting for kids...in fact the whole game feels like it was made for 10-12 year olds in some ways.

Sadly, this game is more of a "what could have been", then what it really is. I understand the company had issues, employees quitting, many set backs....I'm glad they got it out the door, however this could have been THE best Thief game ever, easily, with just a few modifications. I couldnt care less if the voice actor isnt the same dude...the new voice is just great too. These are picky details, imo.

And imagine this affecting my reputation, the availability of future gear and even jobs. Imagine each person's playthrough of Thief being just that little bit different, that little bit unique.

Just...don't get too fond of the idea. Cause that's not the game you'll play here.

Instead, we once again get a game whose developers thought they were making a movie. Every result of every pre-determined. All you have to do is keep reloading if you fail, and eventually, you'll unlock their pre-determined narrative experience. Every consequence of every action leading to nothing more than a binary win/lose dichotomy, with no middle ground. Just success of retry. Not even failure; just retry.

Sure the game nails first person movement. The atmosphere is good. The city is fairly well put together so far. I can even - almost - forgive the removal of Garret's snide humor in exchange for his role as a walking video game instruction manual. There's a solid Thief narrative here.

But its couched in yet another mediocre movie-wannabe video game. This remains the only entertainment medium whose audience has the potential to affect the outcome of the media they enjoy through direct participation.

Too bad video game developers can't seem to grasp the possibilities inherent in that truth.

I can't understand all this negative reviews here. That doesn't deserve this game! Maybe the AI is a bit weak but it's no big problem.

Dull dull dull dull dull... Just started (and given up) but dialog is like a reject from a Final Fantasy script and the pick up everything - move on gameplay leaves me craving challenge, not difficulty necessarily but a challenging goal to accomplish.

Just not very good. I've already uninstalled it.

    2. The colours are poor. Seems like someone thought a film-noir-esque palette of drab, washed-out shades would make it seem serious and dramatic; instead it just looks monotonous, lifeless and cheerless.

    3. The camera does weird things. Click on an item and the camera zooms in close to watch your hands pick it up. This is a serious pain in the arse and after a while made me feel sick as it shook and lurched about..

    4. It doesn't feel like a thief game - in fact, it looks and feels like Dishonoured. Dishonoured is a great game, but I wanted a "Thief" game.

    5. Graphics, apart from the colour palette are not too bad. But in places there are laughable errors. Right at the beginning I opened a window onto a bay .... and saw the water moving around. Only someone had screwed up the scale; instead of advancing and receding by say a metre or so, the water moved entire boat lengths in a second, so fast that any boats in the bay and the bridge itself would have been shaken to bits in moments. How could someone not notice this? It's right there as soon as you open the window almost at the very start?

    6. The writing is kind of blah. How about they start hiring real writers? If you've got a multi-million dollar franchise please spend a couple of hundred K on a real writer. The script as it is seems about the same level as fan fiction. Next time please get someone who writes real books.

    7. The game suffers from consolitis. A lot of the decisions (Linearity, small draw distances, no real exploring) are obviously constraints placed upon the designers by their decision to make it compatible with consoles. But that means they cannot use the PC's strengths: the large drive space and greater memory. So you get a "consolised" game: A game cut into small easily digestible chunks for consoles.

    8. The game is dumbed-down. A lot easier than earlier "Thief" games. That's fine if you like that sort of thing, and some people will. Casual gamers might like it. But if you're looking for a game that will challenge you or make you think, better look elsewhere.

To summarize: Meh. I'd rather play Thief 1, 2 or 3.

A pretty much mediocre game in every aspect, mostly due to poor leveldesign - I mean, seriously, a tunnel, a small hub to sneak, a tunnel, with long unneccessary "roam through the streets" parts? It's not a Deus Ex game, it's Thief!

There is not a lot of variation among enemies, mostly guards with swords or crossbows. However, that's alright, it's to be expected in a Thief game.

The stealth-play feels real and immersive. Picking locks is always fun, and I like how you can look through keyholes in doors, but I missed being able to gradually open doors. There are a lot of secret entrances, so it pays to keep an eye out for hidden switches and buttons.

The difficulty options are insane, they really went all out. Huge props to the developers for including a great variety of difficulty options as well as HUD options. There are also a lot of graphics options, which is nice.

The story is the worst part of the game. It really is a terrible, uninteresting mess, and a huge missed opportunity. With the exception of Garrett and - to some degree - Basso, I felt no connection with any of the characters. I couldn't care less what happened to them or what they did. A lot of the awful story is presented through poorly directed cutscenes, which does it no favors.

The controls are another weakness of Thief. It is clearly made with consoles in mind because they opted for combining the Swoop movement key (think of the Blink ability from Dishonored) and the Climb key, which frequently made me climb objects instead of using swoop to close the distance to my enemies. Frustrating. Also, there is no jump key. Huge mistake, IMO. You can only jump at certain points, like if your character is standing next to an object that can be climbed or a gap that can be jumped. They also nerfed the rope arrow, one of the most iconic tools in the Thief series. You can only shoot the rope arrow on to certain wooden beams, and only in one certain spot on that wooden beam. As you can see, rope arrows are very limited in their use, enforcing the impression that the developers want you to approach situations in a certain way. It restricts your movement options and for me, having played the previous games in the series, feels dumbed down and on rails.

I dislike the way the blackjack works. It feels clunky and very unresponsive to use, and I wish they had stuck with the way Thief: Deadly Shadows did it. The bow works very well, and there's a clear distinction between the different arrow types. However, like the rope arrow, certain arrows have extremely limited use. I never found a good way to use the Blast arrow, it was just expensive, rare and useless. The Flashbang works great, as does the Blunt arrow and Broadhead arrow. Being able to carry a bottle or glass jar to throw as a distraction works great.

Overall, it's an 'pretty good' game if you can live with the irrelevant story and dumbed down controls.

It's how a stand alone rebooting should be done but as a modern stealth game it is terribly linear. For those wanting to look for the old Thief universe you are in for a shocking disappointment. All there all to fight are the guards and the light. On the flip side of the coin, it nails the lifting of goods and pickpocketing. It grants a very satisfying feeling when picking a place clean. The upgrades are actually helpful and the open end gameplay leaves the sadly small city to be picked dry and ability to replay missions to acquire loot that couldn't be obtained before after buying upgrades.

The setting takes place as in a new world, Dark Project, Metal Age and Deadly Shadows never happened. This is a fresh start. As far as the story goes, don't even try to understand it and ignore the ending, easily the dumbest and confusing stories and lamest ending of a game I've seen in 2014. Once that is out of the way, the fun can begin of looting. It's a semi-sandbox that allows you to explore and take what you want.

The hideout, while a new feature is not needed. There is not really anything to do here except look at the unique loot that you have acquired. The levels are designed well and the difficulty factor can be customized. One of the biggest down falls is the almost 1:1 ratio to Dishonored. The text, menu, challenges and some of the story is an exact copy, I'm surprised lawsuits were not filed. There are options to take on jobs from your fence and only two clients. The client missions are fun but far too short and there's only two people. There are a lot more fence jobs but they too are far too short.

It's bland and rough around the edges but it gets the looting factor down. If there is a second it needs a lot of work such as more enemies, missions and much more jobs along with a customizable hideout. Old thieves might want to leave this on the shelf but it does a fair job for a new opening.

If you have played previous Thief games before and appreciate the atmosphere, the environment, how the game works and how difficult it was sometimes then this Thief game is around 5-6 (at tops) for you. Yes this is a Thief game and yes you steal stuff, hide in the shadows and 3+ guards still kick your little stealthy backside BUT this game is fulfilling those game dynamics in a "next gen game" way. First of all, it is Unreal Engine 3, not Dark Engine so problems about Unreal Engine still exists in this game. Sound stuttering can be a real pain and can really make you feel disturbed. Also, the way sound works is weird in this game. Unlike previous Thief games, in which you had no glowing effect on items or no focus eye that adds sparkles to your enemies so you had to listen to everything, this game doesn't have accurate sound effects. Sometimes, you can't pinpoint the location of your enemies or the engine just leads you to wrong conclusions about your environment. Another thing that disturbed me was all those mini-games and/or actions. For instance The City is not actually an open world environment, it is more like bunch of areas divided by loading zones, sometimes filled with button mashing games just to reach to an apartment and trust me, it loses its charm after 50th time. Finally the story is...kind of reminds you several other games. Characters are not well inserted into the atmosphere of the world and the story itself lacks sophistication or culture that previous Thief games had. Oh I almost forgot, they removed jumping action. You can jump only in certain places, which REALLY limits your freedom as a Thief. But instead of jumping, you have this "sweeping" action that allows you to swoop from a shadow to another, which is actually a great idea and really fun to use.

If this wasn't a Thief game and named something like "Shadow Walker: Man Of The Night", than I would rate it 8+. But unfortunately I have fantastic memories with the previous installments of this series and this game doesn't really make you feel like a Thief. It is both using a different engines that is completely a wrong choice or this game and changing game dynamics, which results in a limited gameplay. If you like stealth action games like Dishonored and never played other Thief games (that actually feels like you ARE a thief) I suggest you to play this game, you won't be disappointed. But please also try previous Thief games to see the difference.

The things I don't like are the same third person aspects that I hated about Deus Ex: Human Revolution. At least the frame rate for third person cinematics isn't capped at 30 like it was in Human Revolution. Gerrett is all right in my opinion, but the older voice actor definitely is better. Where it really falls short is the story. I have yet to understand what I'm doing. I was supposed to get some book for some reason that was never really explained well. I love rogues. Period. The more points I can get for avoiding combat, the better. But this gets repetitive, sadly.

The atmosphere is fantastic. The catwalks and eyeballing the area to figure your pathing is fun, but there is little change in atmosphere. There's an underground ruin that seems to be an homage to Kingdom Hearts given the stained glass windows, that was neat. The stairway swivel bits were a nice touch. The asylum scared the crap out of me...I kept expecting Silent Hill static (think original) to fill my ears. Excellent atmosphere...no damn plot, so, no real replayability. I played it to the end, but, meh.

I guess I need more motivation. A reason to propel the character forward beyond some loose, cryptic bits and a guy offering you "work". I really don't care about sandboxing it, what's the story? What does Garrett want that I would give one rock hard turd of a care about? Mass Effect...you need to save the world. Dragon Age...ditto. Dishonored....just vengeance and the well-being of a little girl who adores you. These are all good reasons to play. Garrett doesn't really have one.

Also, how many silver ashtrays does a guy who doesn't smoke need? Ditto on the fountain pens. Even if he is writing a memoir, I don't think Garrett will need that many.

A full +1 for the godawful ridiculous of the paintings you can pilfer and keep in your private collection.

Not content with having ruined the soul of the game they decided to replace the huge open world level maps with a stupid claustrophobic hub system and the levels are horribly linear.

Its the small things that killed the game for me, examples:

    -garret voice sux.

-the girl is a annoying child.

-the claw is nothing more that a simple meat hook and that changes the entire game mechanic ? garret never thought of that before ?

-garret cant jump unless scripted ?

-garret cant blackjack people unless in the "focus mode" ?

-Unskipable animation of looking the corners of a window before trying to open it. Even if just went thru it and must go back, every single time...

-Pressing 'E' repeatedly to open a window ? is that suposed to make us feel like doing some effort ? god of war style of opening things in thief...

-at some point the guards entered in a loop saying the same phrase over and over again, like, conversation, 3 second pause, same conversation, 3 second pause, again, again...

-after entering the city i didn't go to the objective right away, i went exploring. Then i found the i need some kind of tool to get the screws of stuff around, what ? where do i get it ? cant find, ok, go to objective, ooh its sold here, ok, lets steal, get mission to rob a bank, right in the end, already inside the safe, another box thing says i must have yet another tool to cut wires... what ? there was no such thing in the npc selling stuff...

    - you are in a bank, you are in front of a counter, more like a table with some steel bars on top, there is an item you can steal at the other side of it... IF you were human, a mere lean foward and reach for it would do the trick since the steel bars are very widely spaced... you cant, and you cant jump on the table... to get the item that's right in front of you must go to the other side, in another room with a camera. The solution to this could be so simple, since your game mechanic sux that much, don't place items in such way that it casts a beam of light showing the poor job done in the game.

-oh i remember another, when you are opening a drawer, if the drawer is empty, garret right hand don't enter the scene, ok, but, if there is something in the drawer, the right hand appears before we see the content of the drawer, making it feels awkward.

-And in the beginning you need money to buy stuff, but, garret chooses to make a collection of the most valuable items ? i think i heard some guard saying that the mask would feed a lot of mouths for a year or something, but, no...

-Hes been away for so long, and don't remember anything, has powers ? his eye changed ? yet, shows little interrest in persuing awsers. Cant say more because i stop playing.

Dishonored is a much better successor to the thief series.

I say this: Don't judge this game for not being in the same league as the other thief give them a chance be optimistic and don't vote stupid on the reviews just because you are a douchebag and listen to other people crap. Most of the people are like a herd of animals when someone says something bad they all say the same thing.Be open minded when you speak not follow one person insight like "OMG THIS GAME IS SO BAD JUST BECAUSE IT ISN'T THE SAME CHARACTER" .

All the graphical gameplay are good i love the immersions but the Liniar story is kinda old dated from now on. They should make more mission and more side mission on this game. For this I'll give them a good 9 for them GJ Eidos.

This is not the game that I think we all expected. it is a very linear game with few memorable moments and not really worth your money unless you are a diehard fan of stealth games, even then it will be a chore getting through this game. it is dishonored just without the cool flashy abillities

JUST TURN OFF: focus, markers, highlights.. and what will remain, will be pure atmosphere of good old game. A bit more cutscenes (mostly when it's exactly needed), a bit different Garret, but still you can recognise atmosphere.. just with incredible graphics and lighting. Good job, SE!

I found the game really fun to play.

The story needs a big more edge and mystery and the AI needs to be just a bit more ruthless on the harder difficulties. The game deserves at least a 75 or an 80. Loading times. Whatever. And nobody cares about that in these games. The prolouge is linear, just like in skyrim until the end of the dragon attack in Helgen.

Ok, you can´t fire rope-arrows at all wooden things, but hey.. there are many new futures that balance this maulus.

For me this game it is a worthy "thief - game". If you compare it with other stealth games, it is like you compare a book to my personal holy bible!

Almost every moment in this game made me feel like i was bottle-necked into a decision that someone else thought i should make. Its like watching the game play itself. Im not even comparing the earlier games to this, because it fails well on its own. Development difficulties aside, this is a shameful release for a developer such as Eidos, because it seems they willfully strayed away from a tried and true formula for success just to create a bastard child of a game, unworthy of the name it's branded with, be it a reboot or not. Having played the first three installments of the Thief series multiple times, all I can say is that 15+ hours into the game, I am enjoying the game immensely.
**Skip to the bottom for the gist of it. ***
No jump button? No problem. Where do you need to jump to? Garret is still able to leap from beam to beam, or jump down from a high ledge. So you can't jump on a hay cart or barrel?

No jump button? No problem. Where do you need to jump to?
Garret is still able to leap from beam to beam, or jump down from a high ledge.
So you can't jump on a hay cart or barrel? Big deal.
A Master Thief finds other ways in. Besides, jumping makes noise. Thieves shouldn't.

Let's be honest, the older Thief's storyline wasn't going to win any awards either.
Take it for what it is. I haven't progress far along enough to give a full opinion on the story.

People take issue to the combat mechanics. Garret is a thief, not a cutthroat.
If you have to fight The Watch. You're doing it wrong.

I'm not sure if some of the negative reviewers realize that you can turn off all the "hand holding" or way point markers in the options.

Is the game linear? Yes, in a way but aren't all games?
You're objective is to steal loot (I like that it still glitters).
Go in through the window? Basement? or front door? Choose your path, but I'd go explore every path to look for loot. Its not like Deus Ex where you're choices have specific consequences.

I am pleased that this installment retains some of the original aspects and didn't try to reinvent itself with whatever is currently the hot trend in gaming. ie sand-box game. Go play GTA or Skyrim instead.
Don't rate this game badly because the game Eidos designed isn't what you wanted.
That's like saying BF4 is garbage because I can't fly a space shuttle or use sharks with lasers mounted on their heads.

Ok so the Watch and some civilians have repeated idle dialogue.
Nothing new about that. It as like that in all of the previous games and many other games too.
Hardly a reason to not like this game.

Seems like most of the negative reaction to this game is based on what they personally wanted in this game to do. Some complained of stuttering, get a new video card or lower the quality settings. One even went to say they expected more from a developer like Ubisoft....really?!!

    TLDR;

I enjoy the game. Maybe because I'm not a complainer. Its not perfect, but show me a game that is.
Thief 2014 has many old-Thief elements to it, with some updated features like Focus points to enhance your abilities to be stealthier, have better aim or pick locks (and pockets) faster.

You can't do anything you want in the game, you do have to follow the story path and steal the objective.
You have an assortment of arrows at your disposal, which you can stash extra stock at your hideout.
There is a merchant that will sell you those arrows, along with tools to make your thievery easier.

Personally I find this game fun. Aside from the some minor bugs, but it doesnt detract from its enjoyability.

Thief is a stealth game, where everything should be resolved that way, it is not intended for pleasing the entire world as in the case of Dishonored, but rather to follow the footsteps of the classic Thief and please their fans

I've played 15 hours and I'm not even close to finishing the game I'm in the middle of the main story and many side quests I have left to do , which are very funny indeed. For people who loves stealth games should try Thief. it must be admitted that the AI is weak ( may change as they are starting to put patches), another point ... the city can offer makes the game not so linear and you go looking for unique items that are as tables or plates of the city or you decode secret locations if you read personal books that you can find in homes. Thief is a great game of stealth but the only big theme out of AI ,on the plot still cant talk because they do not yet finished the game but it is promising.

Talking About the graphics it is very well optimized, playing at 2560x1080 full graphics i have 30 fps relatively stable but
there are FPS drops but I'm sure that can be solved by OC, about Blur I didnt noticed at all it must but there are people that dislike blur ... that is fixed with a mod.

This decision was also made in-part due to a ridiculous amount of clearly fake reviews here, as well as shill posts on steam & various gaming boards around the net. I'm incredibly disappointed in the dev team and square enix for attempting to dump money trying to buy a better 'score' & sales rather than spending the money making a better game.

    - Lighting is binary, you're either visible or you're not. Fog is everywhere but does nothing.
    - Sound is largely irrelevant when compared with previous games,
    - Controls are limited after being designed for controllers, 2 sets of crucial actions (Movement/Interaction) are grouped and unchangeable. Enjoy falling off a building after mantling when you intended to climb instead.
    - AI is probably some of the worst I’ve ever seen (Thief 1 & 2 actually have superior AI).
    - Level design is mostly corridors & shafts. In each level there’s 2 routes minimum, didn’t find more than 3. Obvious ‘stealth’ route, alternate route/Deus Ex HR-style ventilation shaft route & then a more ambitious, often vertical route if you’re lucky.
    - Missions: They very quickly devolve into find whatever/go-to wherever to watch the next cutscene and witness the atrocious story.
    - Garrett: Generic, modern protag who the world revolves around. No witty remarks, mostly just blurts out edgy comments or recounts information the player is already aware of.
    - Port: Pretty good except for the memory leaks & crashes.
    - Graphics: Bloated, old unreal engine 3 with improved crisp shadows. Colour palette: blue + orange only.
    - Story: I’d actually be wasting your time on this planet if I attempted to try and repeat it.

    More words:
    - Load screen & cutscene to gameplay ratio is ridiculous
    - You can’t jump (there is limited contextual jumping/mantling)
    - Viewmodel fov (T-Rex/invisible piano hands) is immersion breaking & may also induce nausea
    - There is a qte within the first 30 seconds of gameplay
    - Forced takedown sequences
    - Forced escape sequences
    - Thirdperson climbing sequences
    - Occasional QTE before load screens/level loads

Although the style is a little darker, and garret looks more like a malnourished vampire, The game mechanics are fun and visceral, combat is challenging but fun once you get used to it. For a while I thought this game was incredible. Garrett's back, the atmosphere is fantastic, the gameplay is good... But there was always this 800 pound gorilla in the room... Or rather, a 120 pound emo skank that ruins the experience. Now, I understand we're supposed to be all PC and everything, and I have nothing against a female in a leading role, but the way they've done it in this reboot is just awful. Erin is not likeable the way Victoria was. She has no redeeming qualities, and to make it worse, the entire story revolves around HER... I found on a second and a third play through that she became more irritating with each encounter until the only thing I could associate this game with was the whiney mass murdering flake that insults Garrett in the opening scene, and clumsily taints this otherwise interesting adventure. Don't read on if you don't want to see spoilers, but seriously, the whole freaking game is about Erin. Erin's mad because Garrett wouldn't let her kill people with impunity, like an assassin's creed fan girl. Erin fell into the all powerful Primal magic! Erin went crazy so let's spend a long time in a haunted asylum where she was imprisoned, but oh, it's only haunted because of ERIN and her ERIN powers... Did this game really have to focus on this one stupid character so much? Basso's awesome and Garrett is as well, but all of that is ruined because there's no way Garrett would EVER work with someone like her. It's too amateur for him, and nauseating for me. I won't say how the game ends, but let me give you a hint... It has something to do with... Erin... And it's all about Erin.

Thanks Square Enix for putting the stake through Garrett's heart. I had hopes that his story would continue, but after this, you know it's over. And to make it even worse... This Garrett isn't the real Garrett. Old Garrett, according to this ridiculous story, died in an asylum a long time ago. So here in this game we just randomly have a new master thief named Garrett with a female student, and an old time friend named Basso... Guys, if you wanted to start over with a new character, you should have just done it and manned up to it. But oh that's right, you needed to hoodwink old thief fans into buying this cop out at the same time. I forgot.

With some doubtfull anticipation I booted up the game on my trusty game pc. Only to be confused; why did people say this was bad or why doesn't it look like the old games. The most hatefull review I read came from Kotaku and it was a rant of garbage based upon a pre-release version, now do not get me wrong, this game has some minor problems.

    The good:

    - A city hub
    - Faster movement than the previous games
    - An immersive world, with mystery, corruption and adventure.
-intense gameplay, running around on rooftoops, lockpicking, going for the big loot.
    - You are worthless in a fight ( I'll explain in a second.)

    The bad:
    - Textures seem bland sometimes, even on ultra settings.
    - some conversations seem to loop, I heard a guard say: "ya get the noose", 4 times in a row.
    - AI is unpredictable, in some situations it works in some it miserably fails.
    - slow sneaking looks really strange. (feet move faster than your speed, looks like moonwalking.)

Like I said before, Garret is a terrible fighter, he has no trouble with a one on one fight, but more than one and its better to run as fast as you can.

The gameplay itself is what I expected of a Thief game, lots of sneaking and lots of stealing. The side missions are done very well and the upgrades in the game are actually usefull.

The AI can sometimes glitch out, in one situation the guard got stuck in his routine, making him spin around at speed of a tornado, caught in a vortex,in a fan.

But even if the AI fails at some things, there are some cool mechanics at play as well. For instance speed affects a lot of things, if you hastly try to pick a lock, guards can hear you. Running up a wall instead of climbing up via crates, makes more sound.
People ussually leave you alone, unless you: shoot your bow in plain sight or break something, they will call out for the guard and point them towards your last seen location and direction where you were heading. Missions are varied and require thought to proceed. your take on a situation can define everything about the mission.

The city is your mission hub, it isn't as free as Assassin's Creed, but it is fun to look for ways up or down and into buildings.

A lot of people are complaining about windows closing behind you, but actually it does not bother me that much.

The map can be a hassle to use, it does its work, but it does not show things suchas acces points to other districts and this can be quite annoying and it took me several minutes to look for an entrance to another district.

The story is quite standard, but does give a red line through the game and has it's exciting moments.

    Conclusion:

It's nowhere near a 60 bucks game, but it's far from bad. The game fits nicely in the Thief series and does a great job immersing you in another world. Some things could have been better, but looks past these things and you'll find a really fun game.
