When I purchased this game I fully expected it to have its glitches upon release. It's a reoccurring theme in game release as of recently. However, I've decided to not allow these glitches to cloud my judgement on how the game is.

So far from my experience, the storyline is promising and the stealing methods remind me a bit of Skyrim and the Thieves Guild. I am enjoying the gameplay. I have not played the original Thief games, but I do have them on my Steam. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why I'm not currently **** about this game being "so horrible".

Take this game for what it is. Combat is not really a part of how you play. Get caught, run like hell! The guards actually pay attention unlike how Assassin's Creed guard see you and walk away. These guards...if they see you...WILL go after you. With a lack of weapons, you run and hide. Once hidden, they don't give up immediately. Even lightning flashing can expose you while you’re hiding in a cabinet.

This game is about strategy and cunning. You need to pool your resources to purchase the correct equipment and spend your points wisely. Some break ins at random locations yield more information about another possible target. This game is all about finding everything you can and taking your time.

Guards in Thief are not dumb. If you make a noise they will come looking and they’ll call out to other guards to look too. Depending on how much noise you make, the longer they will look. They will light torches to expose you easier. Make too much noise any you are found. You also can’t just run past them like other games. They will instantly know you are present and come after you. That is a welcome change.

This game has a steady storyline with a game play meant for the patient not the hasty or bloodthirsty. I do recommend you purchase this game. If you think the reviews are too bad currently, I encourage you to wait them out. It's only the first 36 hours of release. When has a brand new game ever been releases without issues or criticism?

In the end, this game is a breath of fresh air from all the combat games like Skyrim, World of Warcraft, Assassin's Creed and so on. Do not purchase this game with the mindset of action packed escape scenes like AC or major combat like Skyrim. This game stands alone from them. The point is...don't get caught. Patience is a virtue.

I applaud Edios for making this a 1st person game. You do go 3rd person while climbing, but while creeping around you are in 1st person. It feels more realistic than having extra godlike vision.

Thief is not meant to be even close to Dishonored in gameplay. While Thief and Dishonored share similar atmospheres. Dishonored was sort of like a Dark Assassin's Creed, but I didn't see people complaining about. You had to plan your assassinations out. In Thief combat is not really an option and almost non-existent...unless you want your guts flying across the Marketplace. This game is all about stealth. In my opinion Dishonored and Thief are not comparable.

Also...don't EVER play on Rogue difficulty. Start with Thief...unless you’re a 12 year old, but this game is rated M so I hope there are none. Given that there are some sexual scenes, no one under 16 should play this in my opinion.

I give this game 8/10 currently.

Negative points include glitches and sometimes tricky key mashing to figure out how to get to the next pipe/ladder/etc.

Edios and Steam will have some glitches resolved shortly I'm sure. If not...oh well. Edios might have other more pressing projects than Thief glitch fix at the moment. I would wait for everything to be ironed out, but I can't stop playing. I've always wanted to be the kind of person who pulls heists without any weapons in real life...so I've kinda found my calling in this game.

TL;DR This is a stealth and patience game requiring strategy, not combat. While it has some glitches, none are game breaking. Guards are alert and not stupid. This game is a lot of fun for someone looking for something different.

Combat if you are noticed by the guard or bounty hunter run or reload last save, taking on multiple enemy is too difficult, because of the pour combat mechanic. The bow shoot like a firearm straight no curve trajectory like it should be realistically.

Story, Mission and the Map of the city all together is a real mess that make no sense at all. Frequent loading time, confusing how did I get here moment. Its a real pain to go from point A to point B.

Conclusion there not that much good to say about this game. If the people that worked on this game had had half the conviction as they do now on Metacritic, trying to salvage the sell of this new release. Maybe there would be a decent fourth instalment of the Thief franchise to enjoy. After one day of playing and realized there was no point, that it was not going to get better. I returned it back to the store and I got $30 with the trade in program, soon you wont even get $5 for this.

People are saying the AI are bad, but it's still better then what I experienced from Thief 3, and with the difficulty turned up, and even on normal the AI is rather aggressive and intelligent,

The story is above average thus far, I'm only three chapters in and it's only getting better, But it's really a matter off preference, I hate most fantasy and medieval stories with a passion, but this is something different from the usual crap you get with fantasy stories, It's a very detailed city, plagued by disease, poverty and a corrupt leader, there's no holding back when they try and get that point across, they're wheel barrows with corpses, scenes of people being abused by the law enforcement, it's brutal compared to most of the garbage stories we get.

It's stealth game play is currently unmatched, people say the controls are buggy, but I've had a pleasant experience and everything about that is fine, I do have a gripe with the dash thing that garret can do, you can pretty much glide past most NPC's.

Overall, it's a great game that you should give a go, no matter your disposition of the previous games. it's for hardcore stealth fans, combats not viable.

    4. Objectively, I would score this game an 8 but felt the need to counter the abysmal amount of 0/10 user reviews here. This game is not perfect, but it clearly deserves more. This is the first time I have scored a game higher than I consider it actually worth.

So. Most reviews and statements complaining about movement and not being able to 'jump down' ledges or vault/climb certain objects are due to incompetence of the players. I am sure of this. Admittedly, at first, I had troubles with movement as well until I actually realised what each button does and how the context of Garrets position determines the outcome. Once I learned how to 'hop' from ledge to ledge, understand the visual queues that determine whether a wall can be climbed and how to effectively drop and jump down with precision, moving around the broody environments became a thrilling blast.

It doesn't have the freedom and speed of Assassin's Creed and that's why I absolutely love it. The jumps, distances and climbs feel realistic as you navigate the streets and rooftops. Also, I think it is good that the game feels a bit more 'narrow' than people are used to. Instead of being able to climb any wall and object, I am forced to consider my options. This creates gripping moments in places that you otherwise wouldn't expect them to.

Let me explain. First though, one detail needs to be explained; I have never blackjacked or killed any guards in the game in my 3-4 hours of gameplay. Also, I have only used a single water and blunt arrow (not out of necessity but to test it) and no lethal arrows. This, to me, is amazing. Actually, come to think of it, I am fairly confident that no guard has even ever SEEN me in my 3-4 hours of gameplay. Now, you might think the stealth is easy then. That is not the case. True, in some places, it is easy to stick to the shadows and bypass the unsuspecting guards but others places leave me without a means to 'shadow' my way past. This means I will have to try and find an alternate path or distract the guard somehow and that is never too easy.

Also, the immersion in Thief is absolutely fantastic. Opening doors with lights behind them creates stretching shadows for me to use. Thunder, if for just this crucial moment, illuminates most of the street if it strikes and must be taken into consideration.

The 3-4 hours of gameplay, for me, have only been used to finish 2 main missions and one sidemission. These could be done in an hour but that's what makes this game great. It always gives you the ability and circumstances to go anywhere and loot anything without anyone seeing you and with zero lethality. Pulling off these little heists are beyond thrilling.
For example, a locked strongbox in a lit area with 2 guards talking nearby. Their peripheral view is enough to spot me after a few seconds of lockpicking. Instead I had to create a diversion, verrry quickly (based on your own speed and skill) lockpick the box and retreat because the guards had returned, Now I could wait for the right moment that gives me this 2 second window to dash to the box, loot the contents and dash back into a dark alleyway. No one suspected a thing. This little heist took me maybe a good 10 minutes of planning and timing with quicksaving and quickloading and I can't stress this enough how awesome it felt.

The game market is saturated with fast paced shooters and ultra-powerful 'stealth' characters (a. creed, splinter cell). In Thief you don't even have a sword. It can be played with pure stealth. To me, that says something.

Guide to thoroughly enjoying the game:
    1. Turn off as much HUD elements and assists as you can
    2. Try to crank up the graphics as much as you can
    3. Turn off the lights
    4. Experiment and set 'impossible' goals to yourself (pickpocketing a guard in a very difficult place or stealing something that is easy to steal using lethals)
    5. Discover and enjoy

One thing I will say. The combat itself seems clunky and a bit weird (as little as I have had contact with it) and I don't like how Garret actually looks but these are extremely trivial to me. I rarely have to see Garret and I know I will never engage in combat if at all possible. Also, I didn't even mention the plot. That's simply because I don't care. I play this game like I play minecraft.

Don't believe the reviews and rosy-eyed nostalgics. It is one of the best games I have ever played. You will definitely enjoy this if you like stealth games (not stealth-action).

Sorry for a long one :D

I'm enjoying this more than Dishonored. Maybe because the stealth engine is more rewarding, and because the character is much more interesting.

Downside would be the linearity and lack of creative mechanics. Honestly gadgets should be removed .. as well as powerups

This is a very well made game. Not the best but definitely one that does justice to the roots and tradition that the previous thief games set up.

    Difficulty:
I always played the old thief games as a complete ghost with added self imposed objectives such as 'take no damage', 'alert no one', 'no saves' etc. and I am glad that the difficulty setting is detailed in this game to allow such things (Currently playing at around 870 difficulty points).

Whats a thief game without thieving:
The game does the thieving part really well. Whether it is the hand gestures while collecting loot or pickpocketing. Also the movement animations are really detailed especially while sneaking and lock-picking. The lock-picking mechanic is so much better than old games.

    Story:
The story so far is ok. Not as great as Thief 2 but its good enough to get you into the plot.

    Atmosphere:
The city feels real. The detail that is present in each level is extremely immersive. Sometimes it feels too linear but then Thief:Deadly Shadows had same issue.

    Issues:
As I said its not perfect. I miss the part where I can freely lean left or right, or the ability to freely jump and grab ledges or get on top of boxes. In old games it was possible to even stack a few and use it to scale walls and such. I miss the deep immersive story that portrayed garret as the antihero who saves the day. Hopefully this will come up deeper in gameplay. If not Ill dock 1 or 2 points from my review.

    Conclusion:
This game does a lot of things right and few things wrong. But it kinda fits in to my expectations and what I wanted from the game to begin with. I am sure that going forward some of these issues will be addressed by the devs or by the modders who make fan missions.

It is a good game that stealth fans should try out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've just started playing Dishonored, sorry Tombraider, damn, sorry again, I mean Farcry 3, ah s#it I mean Thief.....

Don't get me wrong, I think the game is fantastic, especially as I've never played the other Thief games so had no pre-conceptions and rose-tinted illusions to be dashed against the rocks.

It's just certain things are slightly annoying, and come across as un-original, like the Swoop, (Dishonored Blink), and the Rope Arrow that can only be attached to rope wrapped posts, (ala Tombraider) . I mean, who climbed up their in the first place to attach the ropes. And the fiery bridge, (similar to both the Monestary in Tombraider and the burning building escape in Farcry 3), and the Beggar Queen, (Dishonored's Granny Rags anyone!).

Like I said earlier, I'm still loving it and it seems a solid enough Stealth game to me, but a couple of changes would have made it fantastic, (IMO). Like a carry weight, (at least in the city), and having to return to Basso to sell the loot and get your gold and why don't you HAVE to return to him when you've completed a mission for him, again to collect my reward.

It just seems a little silly been able to collect, probably a ton or more of precious items, (how many silver candlesticks / mirrors / flasks, can you carry. I accept that that mechanic may not be possible when on actual mission chapters, in the brothel for example, but side missions should end when you return to the person issuing the mission.

Still, only a very small annoyance that really doesn't spoil the game that much.

And, after that small negativity, it really is good. The mechanics are good, (a lot of people complaining about the contextualised keys, [space to climb, jump, swoop, etc], but I don't remember anyone complaining about it during the Mass Effect Series.)

The graphics are good and clean, and in places dark, oh so dark. The options that can be turned on/off seem to go on for ever.

The story is, well, meh. But I really am enjoying sneaking around, breaking into places and stealing stuff without getting caught, and as much as possible, without been seen.

I started exploring the city and jumping in houses, the reward was usually a gold coin and a brooch or candlestick. NONE OF THESE ROOMS WERE OCCUPIED! creating a 'challenge' of press SQ button to open the same cabinet, desk, safe, and night stand as the last room. Lockpicking requires no skill, once you get the hang of it you're set, your lockpick does not break. A few missions I tried ran approximately 2 minutes, that includes running down the same path you've previously been, jumping in a room the size of a kitchen, and opening the cupboard to retrieve your loot, possible ambush? nope you're fine, nobody is ever home.... good thing you extinguished all the candles. This bothered me the most about the game.

Your stealth skills are put to the test on the ground level with the city watch, which isn't very challenging to begin with. Quite decent sneaking action on a few levels, this is the Thief I've cherished way back in the day. +1 here

Cutscenes are the same exact thing - you take someone down, pass through a window, steal loot, knockout a guard, ect.. its all the same cutscene per action, not a huge problem but I guess I'll deal with it.

Graphics are alright, even though the environment is solid and most objects can't be broken. The AI toons have the IQ of a potato, its fun to shoot an arrow in their head and run, but once they are all dead you can come out and explore unharmed.

Thief feels like a flashback to 2000, it is a much fancier version of deadly shadows, I would highly suggest waiting for the price to drop, I wouldn't pay more than $25 for this game.

Despite all these disapointments, I still have played this game 6 hours a day since I got it and do get very immersed into being a thief and being sneaky. The story isn't my cup of tea, but personally I wasn't that into the original stories either, imo its a genre that could use less magic and more realism.

Why? I enjoyed like hell this game. It's one of those games that you only close because you have to go, not because you got bored. I just love the stealth, the way you fool the guards and steal things in front of people's nose. You're silent, in the darkness, wait for the perfect moment to get the bounty and disappear like smoke. Flawless.

When it comes to optimization, it may be not too optimized. Still, I play it on medium-high, I get 60 constant fps (no matter where am I), and I'm happy with the graphics.

For people that review Thief as bad: combat is poor, I understand it. But this game is NOT about combat. This is about stealth. If you complain about poor combat, or game too easy, switch to Master difficulty, complete all the Steam achievements, then come, and I'll regret my words. Until then, your opinion is simply an assumption, and must not be taken into account.

10/10, no game since 2001's Serious Sam 1 has made me have so much fun. Only Skyrim approached it.

It isn't linear, it is possible to ghost levels, the weapons behave as they ever did (oh, except of the fact that the magical growing moss arrows are gone.) You can't jump, and this is the first time I've ever thought to just turn the music off in a game, because it was incongruous and just served to take me out of the moment, but other than that, I'm pretty much blown away by the game. I loved the original thief games, and perhaps I'm looking at this through rose tinted spectacles because I haven't played the predecessors since I was a kid, but although it's bleak and dark and grey, it's glorious.
I'm sorry for those of you who feel the need to complain about button mashing load sections, but it took me nine hours of gameplay to realise that that's what was going on. Lock picking feels more plausible than it ever has in a game. I would have loved to have seen a more complex safe cracking scenario (glass against the safe, listening to the mechanism?) but I certainly haven't found any of the thievery mundane.
I haven't fought much; I tend to reload every time I'm seen by anyone (which has happened a lot), but I have ran around the city killing things just to play with that aspect of the game engine, and I have loved every minute of it. Robin hood style arrow cam when you take a guard full on in the face, 3rd person perspective drop takedowns, blackjackings, gagging beards and dogs; what's not to love?
Yeah, you'll probably notice if you click that this is the first time I've written a review, and that should tell you a lot. I hadn't read any reviews of this game prior to purchasing it, and I'm really glad I didn't, because I probably would have been hesitant to purchase. This is the first time I've come off an eight hour playing session and thought, 'you know what? I'm going to go and write a review of that game.'
Caveats - play on the hardest setting and turn off focus mode - I did that instinctively, because I wanted the game to be a challenge, (and I've ended up having to search for help on line for a few of the more puzzling set pieces.)

I actually find the graphics good with the exception of how the whole screen flashes when you move into light, which is excessive and distracting.

The major let down is the character motivations, or rather the complete lack of them after more than a full mission. There are games that have very slow starts as well such as Half-Life 1, but there the time is spent building atmosphere and introducing the world, whereas in thief it's spent crawling around a dingy city stealing silverware because.... money?

I wanted to think the levels became less linear later as the first was probably just a training mission but from what I've read online they stay pretty uninspired throughout.

So in closing, it's not a bad game, it's just a big let down compared to the legacy it represents and is a pale shadow of other recent games like deus ex and dishonored.

A half cup full of 'meh'.

The new Thief definitely has pretty looking graphics and the gameplay is generally solid, however the average plot, rushed ending, audio issues and other bugs may only have you playing the game once and never again. A reasonably fun steampunk stealth FPS for players who have never heard of the original games, but it might be a step too far for veteran fans of the franchise.

All things considered, a very good and challenging game.

I would give Thief 8.5/10, but I will round up to 9 as this game has been on the receiving end of some unfair criticism. I'm a great believer in taking games at face value, games shouldn't be criticised for not being something that another game is. I'm a great believer in taking games at face value, games shouldn't be criticised for not being something that another game is. The first issue is the complaint of linearity, which is not strictly true. Yes Thief is restricting in a way that you can't go anywhere like you could in an open world game, however you are free to roam the city as you please, there are side jobs to be done, collectibles to find. Areas of the city are complex and dark, it is difficult to find your bearings at first and rewarding to find hidden areas and swoop across the rooftops above the unsuspecting guards below. Thief is not as linear as some suggest.

The biggest part of what makes Thief such a good game is the gameplay. Some players have grumbled about the game being only first person view, which I was initially skeptical of. However you see the world through Garret's eyes, the player has to use their eyes and ears to get by. You cant see whats behind you, you have to physically turn the character around and that makes Thief much more immersive and challenging. There is no map or radar with little dots and cones of vision, players have to plan routes and there are multiple ingenious ways of getting around the city. Garret's main tool is his bow, which is only really a weapon is desperate circumstances, you will use the bow to fire rope arrows, blunt arrows to create distractions and water arrows to put out distant torches for example.

Combat does get criticised for being difficult, which should really be expected. Garret wears dark leather clothing, not steel breastplate. Garret doesn't carry swords around. The developers cannot be faulted, they really made the objective of the game clear. You are a thief, not an assassin, Garret makes clear in the opening of the game that he disapproves of killing guards without reason. The objective is to be unseen. and intelligent play is thoroughly rewarding. Brute force and foolhardiness gets punished, and for me that is a plus for Thief.

    A worthwhile purchase.

Never played a Thief game before first impressions is that the game is a little empty but in the missions on master does make you sneak around to pick safes that can be right by sleeping guards. Overall I don't think it is a bad game I have played worse. Worth picking up and giving it a play through at some point.

If you thought Garrett was well equipped before, buckle yourself up son as he now he has incredible supernatural powers! These let him see through walls, way better than having to look yourself like the other games. Rope arrows are back with some serious attitude, these help you more than ever before with the new and improved levels! Let’s face it, the levels of the first games were lame level design, those suckers were boring as hell, this time the emphasis is on the real deal; stealing stuff!

You want a script, you got it! The story has plenty of wicked action and developed characters enough to satisfy you film fans out there. The dialogue is cranked up to 2014 and these dudes aren’t scared to tell you what they think. F-this and f-that, s-this and time to drop a c-bomb in there somewhere. Who needs that Old English stuff when you have proper swearing?

Thief looks like a real boss! Prepare for an eyegasm the second you see it! Followed by an intense eargasm! The music is insane and awesome! Oh yeah, the game plays awesome too as you can become a real thief and steal from peoples houses just like in Brixton - word to the massive! But how about some end-of-level bosses to mix up the action a bit? How about a zombie hordes mode for multiplayer? They could have a mode called Steal The Flag which would be awesome in Thief!

So all you Thief fans won’t be disappointed as this game is a true soldier in the stealth war, guaranteed to keep the millions entertained until the next Battlefield! Anyone who disses this game needs to back up their stuff, this is the greatest game in this quality series so far.

Graphics 10 – proper blazing showing the true potential of the XBONE and PS4 capabilities
Sound 10 – AMAZING sounds, it’s like a orchestra in my home!
Gameplay 10 – Addicting as alcohol or any drug!

First, you choose a base difficulty, basically easy, medium, or hard, then you can change all sorts of options. such as, specialty arrows only, stealth kills only, no damage, no detection, and much more. The game is good, as good as the original games which i played to hell and back and replayed just recently in preparation for this one. I'll break it all down and discuss the parts people are concerned about.

The game is good, as good as the original games which i played to hell and back and replayed just recently in preparation for this one. I'll break it all down and discuss the parts people are concerned about.

FIRST: Many people are reviewing this game poorly due to not changing their settings to be like the old games. Before you start the game if you want a old school Thief experience then go into the Game & Hud settings and turn them all off. Then when choosing difficulty select custom and turn on No Focus at least, also set the difficulty to master, mid difficulty is actually closer AI wise to the originals but if you've played the originals then chances are your a better player in general now than you were back then. Also this is a true stealth game so you are expected to be sneaking everywhere not slaughtering on armies, it is not dishonored where it is fairly easy to brute force your way through a level, Thief games require a slower pace and thinking.

Rough edges: This game has a few rough edges but it is a really solid release with very few bugs and glitches, nothing game breaking. Some of the jumping movement can be buggy but you'll figure it out pretty quick (though looking at the reviews here there are some slow people around). All the previous Thief titles had and still have similar issues, people are just quick to forget.

AI: The AI is almost as good as the previous titles. It is missing the ability to recognized when something has changed after returning to an area and it doesn't stay alert, the previous games had the AI be unable to be knocked out after being on alert and they stayed alerted, while a little sad it doesn't take away too much from the game. Another change to the AI is the speed a guard will notice you, it is slower or faster depending on how 'hidden' you are. if you are in half light and shadow they will spot you fairly quick. if you are in full low light they will be a little slower. If you are in bight light they will see you almost straight away, this is actually an improvement over the spotting AI in the previous games though that is more my opinion.

Levels: The levels are crafted well and you always have several options and paths of overcoming obstacles just like in the previous games However with the "help" features turned on you have a constant guide to where you need to be making people follow that rather then making their own path giving the illusion of more linearity than there is so, TURN OFF THE OBJECTIVE MARKERS. Some obstacles within the levels have single solutions to get around but these are particular points within an entire level.

Story: The story is pretty good though it pretty much follows the same story as the older Thief games. The voice acting is good not great though I miss Garrets old voice. The side missions are a little bit less interesting but the levels are still fun, especially if you try for the additional objectives like "collect all the loot", "don't be seen" and so on.

Its a unique game in the middle of a release window where most games are just the same old same old. Its the only game in a LONG time to actually hold my attention.

    Things right:
    1. The atmosphere is incredible. The dark Gothic feel is a welcome change. I just love being fully immersed in it.
    2. Player movement. Some of the most fluid and fun player movement I've had the privilege of playing.
    3. Immersion. Creates a world where you can get lost in. A fully believable city with many paths. I haven't been more sucked into a game in a long time.
    4. Graphics are spectacular. Just amazing on PC, and very well optimised. I have a Radeon HD 5850, and I'm running everything on max settings @ 60fps.
    5. Great character acting and animations.
    6. Story. In a thief game you'd wonder what the hell they could do to make it interesting. But they do a great job of introducing fun characters and an interesting plot.
    7. Thiefing is fun. End of, stealing stuff is just great fun.
    8. Multiple paths. The re playability is incredible.
    9. The settings. A game that has all the help you need, but when you want it, can switch off everything and make it as hardcore as you want, without cheating like saying: "NPC now see you in the dark. Just turns off most hand holding. Love it.

In summary, its a spectacularly well made game that deserves all the attention you can give it and more. Don't listen to die hard fan boys whine about how its not the same as the original. trust me when I say, that is a GOOD thing.

    The bad:

    1. The reviews are putting this game down too much. It makes no sense half of what is complained about. I've never been so happy about bypassing all the negative reviews and getting it myself. Has taught me that all reviews are opinions and to trust your own opinion. Listen top the review and make up your own mind as I did. SO worth it!!!

    So buy it!!! Seriously!!! GOGOGO!!!!

I think the game is brilliant. I never played the original Thief games but I do enjoy the stealth action genre. I have found most of the time thus far spent has been collecting hiddenI think the game is brilliant. I never played the original Thief games but I do enjoy the stealth action genre. Thief keeps you immersed throughout; whether you are following the main quest line or if you are hunting across the city for secrets, special inventory or doing side quests for other characters in the game. I have found most of the time thus far spent has been collecting hidden clues and maps across the city to find better loot to steal, whilst exploring the expanse of city that you have available to you.

The game is gorgeous and is so impressive to the eye. The attention to detail means you have to pay attention too, because if you are not paying attention you might find yourself stepping out infront of a guard whom you did not expect.

The AI is decent. They are a little slow and dim witted and I would have hoped for more challenges from them, but my play style has been to hide in the shadows anyway and keep far away from any light sources. The watchmen will not spot you if you are in the shadows until they are very close to you, but if you are in the light or if you run they will be on you instantly. They hunt and track well so when you are spotted by more than just one its often a challenge to find a place to escape to.

I would have asked for a more sandbox-esc level design. As you progress down the main storyline larger parts of the city become available to you. But often there are loading screens separating these areas off, and these loading screens very quickly become one of the largest drawbacks of the game. If there was a more open world approach then it would serve better.

Missions are quite linear, but there are always multiple ways in which to complete each objective with various different paths and options available to the player, as well as other points of interest that hide unique items and loot. For the diligent player, scavenging and hunting around in each new area can be very fruitful. If you were expecting a fast paced game then this is not the game for you. It is slow, not monotonous at any stretch of the imagination. But you play a Master Thief, a diligent hero, where planning and careful execution are your greatest assets. So you will be taking your time in exploring the city and in completing each mission. If you wanted a fast paced game, then don't buy this.

With comparison to other games of a similar style and genre; Dishonoured springs to mind. I really enjoyed Dishonoured and went through 3 play-through's of the game. It allowed much greater combat flexibility which I enjoyed doing in one run of the game. But it was easy, with blink and other supernatural abilities you could vanish. It was fast paced and though I loved it to bits I think it doesn't compare to Thief. I can see myself playing through Thief another two times and exploring every inch of the city whilst being undetected throughout. Dishonoured with its very linear storyline and a story that is over as soon as it has begun doesn't offer the same amount of replay ability or immerse the player as much as Thief has. Dishonoured was easy in comparison to Thief which allowed lots of those less able or younger to find enough challenge but not impossible. This game offers real challenge especially if you seek all the riches that you can get, which is how you should play a stealth game such as Thief.

Some of the pathing is not great. I often find myself falling off a building when I had no intention of ordering my hero to do so. But it means that you require 100% precision if you want to jump down off the roof onto the narrow ledge below. There is a lot of detail in the mechanics, such as needing momentum to be able to reach certain places. I think a jump function would have made the game a little more intuitive and less 'lets hold down space for everything'. But the movement flows well.

If the game had been more open, with less loading screens between different sections of the city, with AI who were perhaps more attentive, I would have rated this game a 10. As it stands it is an excellent game, which had a little more potential to go further. It is a challenge and if you like meticulous planning and strategy when playing your stealth games then this is the game for you. The slow rolling game offered hours of fun and I intend to replay the game at least another 1 time. A must for all who like the Stealth Genre.

Controls are ok but takes a while to get used to. Level design was frustrating at times, especially with The City layout which was difficult to navigate and where some shortcuts would only unlock after doing certain tasks or reach a point in the game. I probably spent more time trying to understand how to navigate through The City than doing anything else.

The story wasn't very compelling. The characters had no charisma, and Erin was probably the character that I detested the most. Having her as a key character to the plot only made it more annoying.

Keeps me immersed, that's it.

    3. You can steal everything ... and it's so baad - well guess what, you're a thief in this game, so of course you can steal and evaluate what you steal. You don't have to steal everything, yeah ? It's freedom. Would it be better if you could steal only the high profile items ? Noo, then people would complain that it's too restrictive ...

    4. Story and characters are lame - well better than in any other game in the series, not as good as Uncharted or The Last Of Us, but come on, it's good enough to get you through the game immersed.

Anyway, I was expecting an utter piece of **** after reading the reviews, but I'm surprised. The game is good, as good as I would expect from the trailers. I think reviewers in media are just **** and have way to high expectations.

    Why no one mentions :
    - Great graphics (technical side) - shadows, light, rain, damn it's a pretty game and it runs great on PC. Everything maxed out, consistent 60FPS on a 3 year old ring, not bad ehh? Read that in any review?

    - Sticking to the original with heavy atmosphere and art style - I've read somewhere that art style and vibe are uninspired ... what the hell was the reviewer smoking, I don't know.

    - Great atmospheric music and sound design - again, no one seems to mention that ?

    - Plays like a Thief game ... YES ! in a good way : )

Anyway, If you give this game a go, and you're not expecting it to be "the best game ever, like ever !" then you'll have a great time. Any as for reviewers, ok there are opinions, but giving it 4/10 ... really ? Because you don't like Garrets voice or characters ? or because you can't fall of every ledge ? Really ? Losing respect for reviewers I kept for years in high regard.

Do yourself a favor and at least play on Master Thief - it's more fun that way. The game gets even more interesting with the custom settings for difficulty, increasing points you earn for leader boards, including the Ironman settings where if you fail an objective or die, you start over from the beginning. Who was complaining this game was easy? 9/10 - not perfect but extremely fun!

Thief is not perfect, but it is far from the worst game I have played, especially in the stealth genre. It has a grim and dark world that oozes with atmosphere. The stealth mechanics are solid and the A.I. is smarter than in some other stealth titles like Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Dishonored.

Is the game’s five years in development, with multiple restarts and lead creative churn, the key factor here? Is Eidos Montreal misguided in its attempt to focus on narrative when Thief’s story is this flimsy? Has the developer’s attempt to cater to as many players as possible resulted in mechanics that work against the core experience of the series? Does the developer possess a completely different concept of immersion to us – theirs one of regular cutscenes, full animation and high detail visuals, and ours the more abstract sense of place that arises from the creation of whole and consistent locations? Does Eidos Montreal simply not understand what made the original Thief trilogy the masterpieces that they are?

    Just sayin'.

Very surprised by the heroic scores of "critic" reviews. Do not be blinded by the 10/10 or 90% scores...one imagines there are incentives for those people posting such reviews and scores.

Since the dawn of time, mankind has struggled with difficult philosophical questions such as, "how did the universe begin?" and "is there a God?". Add to that list "how was this piece of amateur-code allowed to be part of the Thief franchise?"

    It shall remain unknowable.

I am attempting to get a refund - that was no joke. I am a real human reviewer/gamer who played the original thief classic titles on PC.

Yes this game has issues, go find me a game without them, but this game is very enjoyable, and I would highly recommend it to anyone but the original fans of the franchise. Comparing this game to the originals is just idiotic, don't know if you have noticed but the last Thief game was released ten years ago. The demographic for gamers since then, a lot, an awful lot. Eidos Montreal weren't trying to impress the original fans, they were trying to impress people who weren't already a fan of the franchise and get those people into stealth games, and this game is one hell of a stealth game.

It is truly an amazing stealth game, and if you are a fan of them then I highly recommend it, the maps in the game could certainly be a little more open for me, but I can overlook this easily, they weren't too impossibly linear, and they are certainly not worth comparing to a Call of Duty campaign.

The difficulty customization is AMAZING. You literally cannot say that this game is too easy, if you think that then you can make it as hard as you like, without a problem. Imo, the three pre built difficulties were a little easy for my taste so I do recommend customising your own experience and making some of the aspects of the game more difficult before playing.

The world built in Thief is great. The impression I got of the city is that the city is awful, a dirty and filthy place, and yes the people living there are horrible people, doing what they do just to keep going in life.

As for the PC port, truly excellent. Absolutely no complaints, runs buttery smooth and has an excellent range of graphics options. It looks beautiful and has some amazing lighting effects.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Please note that I am reviewing this reboot as its own game. I have never played any of the original "Thief" games so you will not find a comparison here. My review will be based solely on my experience with this version of Thief.

Ever since I first heard of Thief I was excited. I am a huge stealth-fan and I never got around to playing the original Thief-games, so this was a great opportunity for me and other newcomers to jump right into this iconic stealth series... and I am very glad that I did. Thief is a beautiful game and a unique stealth experience with smooth gameplay and lots of variety in your approach on things. Simply a superb game that is unfortunately brought down by critics and die-hards fan who expected something that would have stuck more to the "original recipe".

    The Good:
    · Smooth controls: climbing low obstacles, peeking around corners to get a better look at your environment, swooping from shadow to shadow... It all feels incredibly smooth, especially for a stealth game. If you have ever played Dishonored, just imagine something like that without magic and a more realistic approach.
    · Money money money: getting your gold-greedy paws around precious items such as common goblets and letter openers among countless others and more unique collectable items is incredibly fun and satisfying. This loot is generally realistically spread, meaning no golden goblets will be found on the streets and that jewelry will mostly be found in stores or houses. I personally think this encouraged me to explore different area's to find different kind of loot.
    · Phenomenal stealth gameplay: there are no stealth games this well-crafted in my recent memory. Your approach may depend on the situation, your goal or the difficulty (which is geniously customizable to enjoy the game as hard or as simple as you'd like). You can sneak past every guard, knock them all out, just steal all their money (heheh), or you can distract guards by firing arrows, putting out fires, throwing empty bottles etc. It feels fresh and addictive and completely different with every level or replay.

    The Bad:
    · AI: there's dumb AI and there's blind AI. I'd say the AI isn't necessarily dumb (birds and dogs will alert guards and guard frequently and correctly patrol the area) but the AI is blind as f*ck. Alright, you're in the shadows, but at times you can literally walk in front of guards and they'll keep their eyes fixed on you, but they won't react. This idiocy encouraged me to stay as far away from guars as possible, but I'd prefer my AI a little bit more alert and responsive.
    · Pure stealth may not be for everyone: in games like Splinter Cell or Hitman you can either go in pure stealth without ever being noticed of going in a bit more fierce, killing every enemy in sight. You can obviously kill enemies with an arrow in between the enemy's eyes, but real action is avoided. The more stealthy you play, the more rewarding (both in-game and personally) and immersive the game will be, but poor in-game combat will put off almost everyone looking to cause some fuss.

    The Ugly:
    · Man this game is gorgeous. Amazing textures, immersive lighting, stunning character models, an atmospheric city and espacially Garrett's hands are detailed beyond belief. One of the most beautiful games in recent memory.

    Final Verdict:
    · Thief is not for everyone due to its imperfections, but for stealth-fans like myself this game is a must. It's the very best stealth has to offer and undoubtedly a game that will stick with you for a long time.

Thief has been around a long time. The first game came out in 1998 I believe and it is an iconic game in the industry and inspired lots of other stealth games. Most Thief games since then have had a mixed reception. There are those who expect each new game to be exactly like the original. And there are others who want Thief to be more of an action game. Then there are those that have always understood what Thief is about and enjoy it for what it is: a damn good pure stealth series.

The new Thief is no exception. Nothing has given me the sense of skulking about in the shadows and having to use stealth in order to survive better than Thief has. This isn't an action/stealth hybrid like Dishonored or Splinter Cell that you can go in guns blazing and cut down half a dozen guards in a short amount of time. In Thief you have to remain undetected or face the consequences.

At first I was disappointed by the fact you can't use the rope arrow on any wood surface as before and can only attach to specially highlighted beams. But the game makes up for it in other ways. The new swoop ability is pure awesomeness. It gives a fluidity and speed to the game while still feeling stealthy and appropriate.

The graphics are quite good, with some of the best lighting and shadows I have ever seen in a game. The world itself is quite dreary and that may turn off some people, but it has character and a strange charm of its own.

The sound could be a little more atmospheric in my opinion, but it is generally still generally good. The voice acting is very good in the case of Garrett and fairly good in the case of most of the other characters. Garrett is such an intriguing character.

All in all I think Thief carries the stealth torch admirably, and probably better than any other modern "stealth" game. I've enjoyed it a lot and if you like stealth I am sure you will enjoy it too.

The only game drawback is engine and graphics. It's just a usual UE3, but it's a bit unoptimised and laggy. This is the only bad thing I noticed playing it.

However, I myself have never played the original games. And that being said, I'm rather addicted to Thief 4. It's controls are easy grasp, and its movement mechanics are great for it's core purpose of being a stealth game. Physical conflict is something that is encouraged to be avoided, especially when there is more than one guard in the area, making the use of your tools and the shadows all the more fun. The story, while not a brilliant one, can still strike curiosity as you explore the city, read documents/newspapers that are lying around, and listen in on conversations.

That being said, I do feel a tad bit of dissappointment from what I was expecting upon hearing the announcement of the game. The maps are not quite as "open", and getting around some parts of the city are rather simplistic, not leaving much room for creativity in your movements. NPCs (not including guards) hardly interact or acknowledge you, and a lot of the apartment rooms you can break into on the streets never seem to have anyone at home, which, for me, breaks the tension that can keep you so immersed at times. Plus the "focus" ability, which can be incredibly handy from time to time, can still be used even when the focus meter has run dry, simply by repeatedly pressing the focus mode key. While this might not be a problem for some, it makes me feel dirty when I use it...

The game does have a few bugs, for example on ocassion sound levels change, making it hard to hear some conversation, or guards will ocassionally stop and spin in place for a minute or so. However there are already patches releasing to fix such issues, so the developers are at least staying on it.

Overall I do think this is a great game, even if it didn't meet my initial expectations.

This thief is pretty, there are loads of thief tools to play with. there is a skill tree for specializing your sneaky skills. There is a main quest and side quests, a fully explorable city and despite previous comments it huge, tons of secret locations that are a joy to discover. eg listening to conversations in houses and going to the place where they said they stashed the loot. The puzzles and fun to work out without ever cramping your fun. if you get bored you can fire blunt arrows into the faces of people without killing them, its quite satisfying.

the people who dont enjoy this game obviously have no imagination at all. all it takes is to see something shiny you havent collected and figure out how to get it, when you get there you will find a secret location or mabey find a new route to a new area with new traps and new secrets the designers put lots of effort into the location and intrigue of exploration so everything you see and hear has clues to more loot as to allow you to be a real thief and explore a city if it took you, so technically the games is entirely a sandbox if you choose to apply insight.

or you can ignore exploration and dash through the game, in which case i would think its pretty poop also, as its all combat and firing arrows whilst looking around with the focus button pressed. that is boring. people get way to excited about the games and forget they are supposed to play every bit of a game and not just try to finish it, sometimes that is the only way the games beauty starts to awaken,

I love the atmosphere, i love that you have to stay hidden in order to progress. Well, not HAVE to but it makes the game so much better and you arent a good fighter anyway. I also like the side quests, exploring and just go in whatever direction my nose points at to see what i might find.
What could have been better is the map system, it can be very confusing sometimes. There are different levels on the map and combined with when entering a new area, it is confusing to say the least.
As far as the story goes..Well it could have been better. Voice acting is not the best and who the fukk dropped all that cash all over the town? Things like that dosnt really matter to me. Its a fantasy world where nothing seem to make sens.
    And i love it.

Thief delivers a challenge to those who play without assistance, and makes things easier for those who want that. It also delivers very good graphics, audio, acting, and story in what I consider to be a highly polished pc game. Thief is stealthy cool.

Graphics are decent, but the main atmosphere comes from the sound, combined with the stealth tension.
The use of sound in this game is awesome.
I had hoped for a more open world experience though. There's alot of transitions between maps, and it kind of breaks the tension.
There's a good number of puzzles (mainly to obtain safe combinations), and most are straightforward.
But a couple of them are actually quite brilliant.
Despite a fair amount of side missions, the game feels rather linear. Mainly because of lack of effort to actually make side missions challenging. Most are 'go to this place, and clean it out'.

Despite the flaws, this game has kept me entertained for many hours.
It's not a sequel, but more of a re-boot. And as such, I expect to see more games in the franchise.
If they put a little more effort into the game World, the story and side missions, it could revitalize the Thief franchise greatly.

But as of now, it's nothing big, but holds potential.
    Nevertheless, it's an enjoyable game.

Granted I never played any of the previous games, but taking the game at face value and not reading into the unnecessary amount of negative reviews, I'd say give it a try. You just might enjoy it.

I think maybe they bought this game excepting it to play exactly like Dishonored, where combat is actually a viable way of dealing with enemies if you aren't into stealth. But you are not Corvo, the trained guard of the Empress, you are Garrett, master of the shadows! I feel like the people who bought this game and slaughtered their way through it weren't really looking for a stealth game to play.

The only thing about this game I didn't enjoy was the story, which was pretty horrible. Not to mention it completely removes classic Thief lore elements like the Hammerites and Pagans. The closest you'll get is a very old and abandoned Keeper library (not even identified as such in the game), and some optional collectables. The world also felt like it lost a lot of it's 'magic' with this installment. You definitely won't run into any shamans or clerics ready to hurl a magic bolt at you. This was the most disappointing thing for me because I loved the fantasy in the original Thief games.

However, as far as gameplay goes, I loved this game, and I honestly don't understand the people calling it easy. Clearly, they did not play on master difficulty while trying to get all collectables/loot. I personally like to take it a step further and remain completely undetected throughout the entire game as well. Please, try stealing all the loot in the room while your enemy fires wildly around you, as well as the loot off his person, using no power ups, without him detecting you once. This game is as hard as you want it to be, and I'm personally going to play through again with the difficulty increased even higher (no knockouts, in addition to no kills). I will admit I wussed out and killed the Freaks in the Moira level, ruining a completely 'no kill' game, even though the master difficulty allowed their death.

I also don't remember the enemy AI being as bad as some reviewers are making it out to be. It felt more responsive than in any other Thief game I have played, and I liked the different levels of alertness guards could experience. To use an example, I remember in Thief 1 I was able to stand almost directly in front of a guard's face, within inches of him, but because my light crystal remained dark he failed to detect me. This is no longer the case in Thief 4, where an enemy can still spot you if he happens to patrol up behind you, or too close to the corner you're hiding in, even if you are concealed in shadow. However, the NPCs in Thief 4 do seem to respond less to environmental changes. They will notice if you open a door or put out a torch they are standing next to, but will not if you wait until they've walked away a bit, even if they patrol back to the area. Disappointingly, they also do not seem to notice when you've stolen something off a nearby table or pickpocketed them.

    Now, onto the maps.

The City can get a little repetitive after a while, but once you learn all the short cuts it's not so bad, and there are a lot of different ways you can navigate the map, and of course A LOT of secrets and loot to find. There were a couple side missions I struggled to complete simply because I hadn't discovered the proper way into the building. It seems like this was annoying for some people, but for me I liked that I had to explore a bit before I could complete an otherwise easy objective. My only beef with the City was the way the audio seemed to bug out and repeat itself endlessly until you moved out of range of the conversation. Could get majorly annoying after the 50th "PRAISE ORION" while trying to scope out the surrounding area.

Missions maps are smaller than they were in previous games, or at least feel smaller, but still fun to explore. Like the City, there are multiple ways to go about exploring, with loot and secret areas to find aplenty. I only 100% looted one map, and that was the first one, but I plan to go back and 100% them all (you can actually replay all missions from the City if you don't want to start a new game). However, the biggest flaw with levels are the way they are set up. While there is a lot to explore, if you advance the chapter's story too much, you run the risk of cutting yourself off from the rest of the level and all the loot you haven't picked up yet. The only way to go back is to restart the chapter, as there is no backtracking once you reach certain points. This can make missions feel a bit linear, but it wasn't game breaking for me personally, especially since you can replay all chapters so easily.

In conclusion, Thief 4 is a decent game with a bad reputation. If you go into it expecting an exact replica of the original Thief games, then you're going to be very disappointed. However, keep an open mind and you might just find something you enjoy.

I was looking forward to the reboot because I essentially wanted a thief game with updated graphics.
Having spent 10 hours with the reboot, here's my take. First off, the game looks good. Not jaw dropping, but good. The developers have done a nice job of giving the game a period feel. Second, Stealing is fun. Some of the side quests and main missions create a great atmosphere where you actually feel like a contracted thief. One or two though, are pretty bland. Most of the animations are good, but some like closing a cabinet take too long. I would've also liked a single animation for picking up multiple pieces of loot at once. Certain windows do close behind you, but not doors, so I don't see where those complaints come from.

In my opinion, comparisons to Dishonored are unfair. This is a different type of game. I didn't enjoy the stealth in dishonored, it was always more fun to use magic offensively. In Thief, stealth is fun. It's all you have really. If you're up against more than 1 opponent, you generally won't survive. You're a thief not an armed robber.
The AI falls apart at rare times, but is mostly ok. The audio could've been better. The story is typical of the franchise. Take that for what you will. The City is a disappointment, feeling disjointed because of loading screens and a horrible map. Finding your way around sometimes becomes a chore. It feels more like a small town rather than a large city. Because of this, thief feels at times like a last gen game at times, instead of a current (8th) gen one. Hopefully we'll get a sequel where these issues will be addressed.

The levels are linear somewhat, but it is NOT a Call of Duty sneaker. There's no such thing. If you're good at Thief, you'll see very little action.

In spite of its failings, Thief remains a fun game. I don't compare it to its predecessors. I had an amazing time with those games as a kid but when i replayed them, the same sense of awe wasn't there. I loved Deus Ex, and Deus Ex:HR while fun, didn't hold a candle to that game in my mind. Played on its own merits, this reboot has enough going for it to give you a sneaky good time.

I realise it's a reboot and not a sequel, as one of the other reviewers comments, but I think if you're going to use the name of a series for your new game then you need to make sure the game feels like part of the series and I'm not sure this does.

I got bored very quickly and just can't be bothered to play some more. Perhaps I will come back to it but I really don't know when.

Thief is a game that demands much from the player. It's an uncompromising game built on the nearly extinct concept of a pure stealth game. It's an uncompromising game built on the nearly extinct concept of a pure stealth game. That is what it is designed to be, that is what it delivers. Sure the excessive loading screens every few blocks in the city are annoying and the pace of the game, both in it's narrative and in it's gameplay is methodical to the point where it is nearly the polar opposite of a genre where Splinter Cell Conviction and Assassin's Creed are also marketed as stealth games.

This is not to say that the game can't be tailored to fit one's desired concept of stealth; it is arguably the most customizable stealth game ever created, but it is a stealth game and nothing else. No action, no CoD in the middle ages...it's just a man, his bow, his blackjack, and a city full of things to steal. It's a visceral, tactile experience unlike anything else on the market.

The story isn't that great, but it's incredibly atmospheric. It's a consistently dark experience, in both its underlying thematic elements and in it's appearance. The characters aren't especially unique, but they serve their purpose and fit well within the world that the game creates around you.

Everyone who references "quick time events" is a lying piece of garbage who hasn't actually played the game. Period. Anyone who gives it a zero comes from those who came in with expectations that the game NEVER aspired to achieve. i will never understand how people can buy a game knowing what it is and then complain about what it isn't. It's like buying a Call of Duty game and complaining that doesn't have the elements of an RPG. This game is very clear in it's marketing. You're a thief who doesn't kill unless he has too and whose sole purpose is to steal stuff. This isn't a fighting game, this isn't an action game, it is an old school stealth game built around fundamentally sound, if not the most flashy mechanics.

Thief is an uncompromising game that provides you with an environment, a skill set, and tons of things to steal and sets you free to do as you will. There are a few sections that are more linear than I would have liked, but far fewer than the trolls around here would have you believe. There is never a time where there is only one way to proceed.

If you're up for a challenge and you go in knowing what you're buying, you will love this game. If you want a game that is more true to the term stealth than any release in recent memory then I encourage you to pick this up. You won't regret it.

I find weird complaints when people talk about the game. "There's no JUMPING"... well... there's no missing a jump. Unless it's one of the rare ones that requires a run-up. The game tells you if you're able to jump to the ledge you're facing, and you hit the button to go there. It's not a platformer, and that's fine. 90% of the time, in the original trilogy, you were just mantling up onto things. Actually jumping mostly just got you noticed, quickly.

There's a chase sequence... that doesn't actually mean you were noticed by anyone. It's bookended by cutscenes, and mostly serves to get you from one area to the next in a sort of mad dash action sequence. I wasn't fond of it, but mostly because it's so alien to the way the rest of the game is played. Then I figured out there wasn't any loot in it, and the goal was to get it over with ASAP... so it wasn't too bad then.

I felt like a lot of the tools at my disposal were incredibly pointless. Choke arrows, mostly. It's a ranged blast of pepper spray and it ticks off the recipient. That's not horribly valuable for any playstyle I'm aware of. The flashbangs were a little more useful, similar to their anti-zombie use in the old games. But not aimable. Then again, you can't blind yourself with them, so... it's a tradeoff.

Two boss fights in the game. One clearly built to be fought. The other clearly built to be stealthed. No real complaints about either, to be honest. Although the first would be... ludicrously difficult to be pacifist in. It's also possible to one-shot the enemy. So some tactics work better than others depending on the situation.

One really interesting thing included... is a leaderboard for extra difficulty settings. Purely meta bragging rights, but I think that's what technology is for. You can choose customized difficulty settings to force you to play the game the way you want. I suspect some of them are technically impossible when taken together. The amazing thing to me is... you don't have to play the game through once to unlock it. It's just there.

End of the day... according to steam, I spent about 57 hours on it. I've replayed a few levels I quite enjoyed. And if my #1 complaint is that it's not long enough... and it's clearly kept me engrossed for that long? That's quite good. I would be quite happy to play a sequel of this. Perhaps with larger playgrounds between plot-related choke points and one-way passages. One can hope.

Alot of these people have no idea what they are talking about. This is NOT a full copy of previous THiefgames, but people seem to focus on that part. It is a reboot, it feels nice and open world, the graphics are great and the story actually is not bad.
Ive sincerly enjoyed this game and i hope everyone tries it out before relying on these biased reviews.

"Levels that you cannot ghost since the developers appearently have not game tested each level for ghosting." .. wrong, this guy apparently sucks at the game as it is possible.

"Technical problems " well.. none on my side

"The open world to explore is an utter joke (or an outright lie)." i can go where i want and run around the world without even starting a quest so.. guess what.. WRONG

I absolutely HATE people being **** retard around a reboot, thinking its the same as a sequel and then compare seriously everything to the older games. As much as i like the older Thiefs, i do like the gameplay of Thief 2014 to and though its not perfect and there are problems correctly pointed out but there are so much half-assed non-factual arguments here

I don't get the hate. I already have 20 hours of play, been exploring every nook and cranny of the game and it's been an amazing experience. The game is amazing, as a stealth nut, it really catered to me with mastery. The game is certainly not short, I don't see half the bugs that are being listed, and it is as linear as you want it to be (there are tons of optional stuff to do).

Perhaps I don't get this because this is the first thief I played? I don't know. What I know is that this is an awesome game, I'm really, really glad I bought it. Congratulation Square and Eidos-Montreal!

Really fun game, I think a lot of people set their expectations far too high. The AI is smart, making it hard for even the new players of FPS games playing in the easy dificulty, the controls are fair, if you want to slowly go up a fence you need or to be walking/running, and if you want to slide on the fence you need to be fast running/dashing, the only thing i found a problem was with the rope, where you need to let the animation of the rope stop to go up on it, but getting that out, the rest is fine, if you have a bad coordination it's your fault my friend, not the game control.

People keep wanting to qualify a game by it's 9 years old predecessor, just play the game without any expectation and you will see how much better it is, cuz until now all i have seen in these reviews are people who got the game with and expectation of the game being bad, and them they just play the game to look for every bit of bad stuff that pops out, and some times considering things that are good as a bed thing, at least i was not bored like in "Castlevania Lord of Shadows 2" that was repetitive as hell and the only thing that saved it was the cutscenes and the boss battles.

Gameplay-wise the game feels pretty solid, if not terribly difficult (on Master difficulty). My only major gripe is a tendency for the movement to go glitchy on occassion, which you get used to (use x to drop down instead of the swoop key!).

The environmental exploration aspect is phenomenal and carefully, even lovingly, crafted. I've spent 12 hours in the game and 7 of those have been in "The City", the sprawling open hub world. And I've only found roughly half the loot within it (+only 1/3rd of the unique items). Several times I'd be shown something through a window, and then have to figure out how to get to it. I'd backtrack and find routes, switches, and pickups I'd totally missed despite believing I'd been thorough. Reminded me of the HL series in the way it handles exploration, puzzles, and secrets.

Speaking of secrets, Thief feels like a game built around them which, as an explorer type gamer, gives me great joy. Little things like closing the door you opened to enter a room to find some coins behind the door abound. And, I don't want to give any puzzle solutions away so I won't go into detail on this one, but the designers are constantly toying with the game's mechanics in cute and interesting ways.

Unfortunately, the main story is driven by stereotypical characters and standard "video game relationships". It's a shame because there's so much potential with how engaging on the surface this beautifully dark world is. Gotta admit though, the "side banter" almost makes up for it. Here's a good example: A boss bad guy, finding a ring he was looking for INSIDE a corpse, in standard cartoon villain fashion kills one of his goons for "failing" in this task. But after this cutscene and the boss' exit, a surviving goon argues how he didn't lose the bet because it was for the next time the boss BEAT one of 'em, not KILLED 'em. And shortly thereafter questions whether they should be checking for ****rings. I'll just say the ensuing minute of dialogue is quite humorous.

I'm getting the vibe Thief is a game where the side content is better than the main game which is more standard par-the-course. I AM only 3 hours through the main story despite 12 hours of play, so that perhaps could be why I feel this way. :P

All in all, despite some minor shortcomings and a love-it-or-hate-it familiar "mainstream" direction, the game has kept me captivated and wanting to get back to it for these first 12 hours.

Please give this game a chance! I love it and am currently binging on it. Maybe I'm and idiot but several missions stumped me the focus power felt balance, not over-powered. Sure the game is pretty linear, but since when has that been unacceptable. Occasionally, something things are a little clunky, but it doesn't overshadow anything. The bonus objectives each mission dish out extra gold (for you costly upgrades) giving each level a unique blend of both combat and stealth choices. Sure, there are not factions in this game and less paranormal/metaphysical paraphernalia so the storyline is blander. As far the AI/guards, well I would say they meet expectations. They are unobservant, but several times they kicked my ass, they aren't no pushovers! Don't get me wrong, this Thief is a horse of a different color but I like it! The elements they added and the elements they took away may have made the game more one-dimensional, but it also it a lot less tedious. I feel like a bad ass ninja when I play this game that has it's fair share or rewarding challenges. Seriously, poo poo on the naysayers. Apparently not releasing a remastered HD version of the previous thief games was a huge mistake, because that is what they wanted to play. Expand

In spite of its bland story and some frustrating map design, the return of the oft venerated stealth gameplay that defines the franchise makes Thief's reboot an enjoyable - if flawed - gaming experience.

    Pros:
-The graphics are nice even if you run it on a bit lower settings, so there's eye candy even for 2-3 year old graphics cards, the graphics engine also seems to adapt really well to the situations, depending whether or not there is a lot of action on the screen. Albeit if you play on a 27" or a larger screen the texture's show a lot of saw/jagged edges. I myself use a 27" mainly, but when i hooked up my 32" they were more pronounced.
-Soundscape is brilliant fits the theme of the game like a hand in a tailor made glove.
-The controls work well and they feel responsive, no matter which hardware you use to play, keyboard and mouse or a mouse and small combo control device, or a pad.

    Cons:
-The physics sometimes get a bit wonky.
-Does not capture the overall feeling of the original game, the original game felt more intense, and you tended to die a lot faster in the original if the **** hit the fan.
-The game itself is on the short side, not worth the full price as far as content goes, This is one of many games to follow this sad trend :S

Overall 7/10, better than i feared it would be, worse than i wished.

This new Thief does a lot things right but can still be rather clumsy at times. Definitely worth trying, though. [Issue #240]
