Game is better than I thought it would be after all the hype the last few weeks. The combat system is what is always is in the Witcher, some love it some could do without it. Have found a few minor bugs, one quest would not finish because of how I entered the area I found a clue out of sequence, but reloaded and finished no problem. Have not had that problem on other quest. Overall very happy with the game! Expand

I gave a low-rated review earlier which was unfair, I had only played a couple hours. Since then I've found that if I turn off the sharpness setting in the graphics menu, the visuals are much better and less aliased. Anti-aliasing can't be fine-tuned much so keep that in mind. I'm not big into RPG games but this does it very well.

For reference I'm playing with Nvidia 970 GTX, and I have all settings on ultra except hairworks and foliage distance (high).. with these settings I get 75 FPS (max for my monitor w/ v-sync) at 1080p, with dips to 70fps occasionally.

In comparison with the likes of Shadow or Mordor or the Arkham series, Geralt's sword-play (and especially boxing skills) is somewhat slightly unsatisfying. The music is perfect, but there's not enough diversity. You end up hearing the same tracks repeated endlessly for hours, until you get to Skellige. Anyway .. what a treat this is/has been, and I'll definitely play through to the end, and most likely check out the expansions. A vast improvement on the Witcher 2, I guess there'll be incredibly high expectations on the developers for their next game. Expand

Honestly, finding adjectives for this game just seems a waste. It's just totally on the money for an open world RPG

Not much to say really, i don't want to write a review but i feel like it's necessary to rate this game and tell you that this game is amazing. It's not perfect, but still an incredibly solid RPG.

Don't rush through the story, take your time, explore, do side quests. Eventually play the first two Witcher games before jumping into this one.

Only one thing to say to CDproject, bravo!

There's a lot of comparisons floating around out there insisting this is better than this game or that. I will say I was extremely disappointed with dragon age: inquisition. Where that game is dumbed down and very simplistic, the wild hunt is completely opposite. It requires skill, not just button mashing.

Most impressive, however, is the story. The atmosphere of the game is that of a dark world, nations pitted against each other in war. You are on a mission to find your adopted daughter. I have stopped to do so many missions and have been blown away with the attention to detail; you end up caring about what happens and I find myself always wanting to know more. I cannot give the developers enough credit on their story telling. One side story ends up intertwining with your main mission, involving a Baron. The acting and story were so incredible, and I was even sad/intrigued at what had happened by the end. And then I realized I had a dozen more contracts I hadn't even touched yet.

Combat is a little off, but not terrible. I keep wanting to sneak attack and perform moves similar to Shadows of Mordor combat, which to me is a masterpiece in gameplay and combat mechanics. The Wild Hunt is soooo close to mirroring this in terms of controls, but it falls just slightly short. Sometimes it just feels like sword swings don't connect the way they should. With that said, nothing is more satisfying than seeing heads and limbs fly off.

I've had no problems what so ever performance or graphics wise, playing on an ASUS G751JY with a 980M nvidia card. FPS remains steady between 50 to 60 with all settings turned up. The game looks gorgeous. I will say the nvidia hair works is over rated and not worth the fps drop.

The only complaints I have are minor; aside from the combat mentioned above, what is with games wanting me to collect flowers and herbs across the whole map? This is not fun to me. Unfortunately, that is the way of things in games now; stop and collect a dozen herbs for this and that. Thankfully, this is much better done than in DA:Inquisition, where it takes a moment to bend down, pick it up, and stow it away. In wild Hunt, it's quick. Lastly, all the guys in the game are either overweight oafs, or look like complete dunces. While all the females are super models. Kinda looks funny.

    P.S. Ciri is HOT.

Maybe it's not one of the best games ever made, as someone dramatically declared, but it's easily the best of the Witcher trio graphically, technically and storytelling. Critics of Assassin of Kings have been listened carefully, and I finally can say we have a high quality Witcher game.

The crafting and alchemy system (and inventory) is tedisome and largely pointless. Potions can be very useful, but you only have to make each one once, after that, you no longer need hundreds of gathered ingredients. Same in crafting: The only thing you want to craft is the one set of witcher gear you like.

And finally, the ending ... do yourself a favor and read a guide, when handling Ciri, otherwise you are likely in for a disappointment after ~200 hours of playtime. This they badly screwed up, giving very minor decisions an incomprehensible nasty impact. Maybe to force you into a new game+?

Baseline, if you can relate to the universe in any way, play this! It has a lot more quantity, and a little less quality then the previous installations. Maybe wait a bit for the final bug fixing, and some good game play altering mods, which are already popping up.

This is a game that will last many years, the depth, a rich story with a solid gameplay, so many titles can sustain a story between 3 games, choices in so many quests, many subquests with more depth than the main quest.

The flaws in the Witcher: lack of variety in builds, the protagonist voice actor can't say he's an actor, the outcomes from the main quest are lackluster.

The Witcher is a series you might remember by book or game, but you need not play or read them to get the "full" experience of three. You'd be more knowledgeable about things, characters, factions and etcetera, as would be my recommendation since they're very good, but not necessary.

The graphics are fantastic as you've might have heard.. the amount of hype and all. The combat is generally well balanced, favouring those well prepared: it can be frustrating if you're not - especially on higher difficulties where the wrong step leaves you dead. You can always die if you make a mistake. It comes packed with an incredible amount of things to do, from simple two step fetch quests to much longer multi-quest, well, err, quests.

Gameplay can be deep as you want it to be. You can prepare as much as you want for your fights, making potions for healing, damage, or other effects, bombs which have different uses against monsters, as well as blade oil to buff damage towards said specific types of monsters. Or you can run in and get dead. Your choice.

Story? I'll leave that up to you. It's best to be in the dark about this game; all I'll say is the game deals in grey, don't expect happy rainbows and kittens: the choices you will make may not be favorable, and that is what makes it so good.

Lastly, gwent. Personally, this is a fantastic part of the game I never thought I'd enjoy. It's a turn-based strategy card game. It's awesome.

Will go down in history as the moment Geralt of Rivia came to life and slayed the monsters of over-hyped broken games, leaving those developers get their **** together and make something actually good.

Heh. Unlikely. I'm hopeful as a dandelion though.

Incredible graphics, fantastic sound, remarkable soundtrack and great story telling. The AI, however, can be easily exploited in sections and some side quests and even main quest have some real issues. Looting is frustrating until you get used to the incredibly narrow loot range and direction - was done to allow for looting in combat but it also makes looting a chore when not in combat. There are some glaring clipping issues and sound overlay problems but that is to be expected in a game that provides well over 100 hours of game play. Combat difficulty is extremely varied and its easy to out level the main quest content if you do a significant number of side quests so be cautious if you enjoy a challenge.

I recommend this game highly to anyone that enjoys RPGs, despite some of the nagging minor issues. This is a game that will stay with you for a long time and is a fitting closure to Geralt of Rivia's tale.

GRAPHICS: The graphics are spectacular but demanding on the PC. You do need to have a substantial rig to fully enjoy the graphical fidelity. On console the graphics are well executed and meet the "next gen" standard.

SOUND: Really well done ambient, combat and location sound effects that create a very compelling atmosphere. However there are some sound bugs where certain effects will linger and over power dialogue which is annoying and immersion breaking.

SOUNDTRACK: The soundtrack is phenomenal and very fitting to the setting, well implemented and strikes a chord at the right moments with excellent fading and transition some exceptions where, like the ambient sound effects, the music is overly loud and will interfere with dialogue delivery.

VOICE ACTING: Superb voice acting, with good dialogue and consistently well delivered lines. The NPC dialogues in areas could use a bit more variety perhaps as it can become monotonous and even irritating to hear certain dialogues over and over.

STORY: Excellent stories and very compelling, rich character development using multiple story telling devices including cut scenes, descriptions, items and game play. One of the best stories in gaming.

GAME PLAY: The combat is varied, from easy to difficult and is usually dependent on preparation and build but the AI can have issues at times. Otherwise the combat is fun and is adjustable to play style ranging from light armored dodging, fast attacks and signs to heavy armored tanking and the middle path of a little of both. The limitation on healing allows for tension and precision and can be challenging. Crafting is well implemented and can play a vital part in the game. Gwent, the mini card game is really quite fun but can be completely ignored if you don't enjoy it.

GAME DESIGN: Great level design and a vast open world to explore. Secret passages, caches, and unusual ruins compel the player to explore. The exploration is also well rewarded with great story telling and really well developed characters outside of the main quest. The quest design is some of the best since the Secret World and many developers should take note of the quest design in this game as it sets the bar very high for the genre and for games in general. Even after completing the main story the remaining quests, even the ones that are low level, are enticing just for the stories that they tell.

RECOMMENDATION: If you enjoy RPGs and well told stories this game is a must purchase.

Lots of games will give you superficial choices. Some games, like the mass effect franchise, take it further painting actions as good or bad. But those choices are black and white. Often choice in the Witcher 3 comes to trying to pick the lesser evil. Twice in the game, on insignificant side quests I left someone to die. Once that was a show of mercy, another time an act of cruelty. The same action meaning two different things. Now that is moral complexity. That doesn't condescend. Choice affects who you end up with and how happy, or hearbreaking, the ending is. And its not a few key yes/no moments. A lot more less significant choices build up to the outcome. Its quite well done.
The game is not quite perfect, though it certainly is the closest to perfect that currently exists. Combat, though better than the previous two games is still a bit rough. Fighting is designed to avoid click to win, and be more tactical but I could still click to win for the first 1/3 of the game, later too until I dialed the difficulty way up. Enemies can gang up on you, instead of taking turns like the movies or Arkham games, forcing you to plan your fights more tactically. Same with your limited use of healing resources in combat. Some skills on the skill tree are clearly underpowered compared to others, and "hybrid" builds are trickier to play despite being truer to the character.
Also though character development is awesome in this game, it is actually slightly weaker than Witcher 2. Once you run out of things to say to your chosen or your friend character, you run out of dialogue. That is probably a symptom of the much larger world. When you are interacting with a character as part of a quest it is great and well rounded. Characters change in response to you. Outside of quests, not so much.
The world is huge, stunning and beautiful. The water animations, and wind blowing through the trees are beautiful. It feels like a living, breathing world complete with weather systems and dynamic shadows (depending on the amount of daylight and the sun's position in the sky).
Overall the game will be off-putting to some people. It is fantasy, but this world is dark, sexist, racist and worse. Some themes will disturb younger viewers. And if you can't get into the combat, I suggest setting it to easy and playing to see the story. Because games this good are few and far between.

Monster hunting is great, you feel like the witcher, all monsters have specific weaknesses like certain bombs, oils and spells that you can exploit and really help if you are playing on the challenging difficulty levels. Combat is reward, dodge, parry, roll out of the way using spells well, etc. Safe to say that the roll spam from witcher 2 is not as bad and you can use spells out of roll instead of pausing for a few seconds.

Now the big controversy. How is graphics and performance?
Its sort of hard to tell if the game has been downgraded or not. It seems like visuals vary based on day time, some areas don't look that good while others look absolutely gorgeous especially during sunsets. The sandy areas seem to look less good for some reason, i think its because of the pastelly type art style.
Overall the graphics are pretty good and the slight worse looking areas can be forgiven because how great the gameplay is.

Performance varies. The game is really demanding but its open world with lots of npc density and lots of effects everywhere. I am using a gtx 780 and get around 45-60 fps on high settings. Ultra settings cannot be reached (only 30fps) but I don't notice much difference between high and ultra, besides shadow quality and a bit more npc's.

Keyboard and mouse controls are ok but I suggest rebinding some to different keys, I for example use dodge and targetting on my two thumb keys on mouse instead of alt and z respectively.

So overall I will take away a point for the graphics/performance being not as good as everyone hoped.

TLDR: the gameplay is intact, controls are good, story is good, sidequests are non fetch quests, performance is ok for some, not great for others, graphics are good at times other areas a little disappointing but not enough to deter from gameplay.

Writing is is very high quality, with some of the best dialogue I've ever heard in video games, and tons of humor. Characters are interesting and feel realistic.

Open world exploration is possible and you can swim, dive, jump, and climb most of the environments you see. I haven't explored that much yet, but so far it feels a lot like Skyrim with the ability to find cool loot, monsters, quests, etc. In addition, there's tons of side-quests that are actually interesting and not something stupid like "fetch me 10 goat horns".

Tons of choices available in terms of dialogue, backstory (helps recreate your choices from previous Witcher games), and so on. You can really play YOUR OWN way - be an **** a "hero", or something in between.

Lots of attention to detail - things like timed dialogue, smooth controls, meaningful dilaogue choices, easy to follow markers / explanations for quests and new concepts (like creating potions for the first time), small improvements like being able to automatically follow the road when mounted.

The game also looks amazing and runs really well - I'm getting 35-50 FPS with a gtx 660 TI GPU and a i5-4670 CPU with medium/high settings.

Only reason I won't give it a 10/10 is because the game is crashing frequently for a lot of people right now, and because I haven't had the time to try everything out yet. Overall though, CDPR definitely delivered on their promises. The PC crowd has been waiting patiently for another high quality RPG, and Witcher 3 is that game!

Every little side quest has a story to tell. Sometimes they are predictable of course, but they always come along with a unique charm and often brilliant humor.

It sets a whole new standard in terms of content.
If it weren't for the controls not being good for kb+mouse it'd get a straight 10/10

    Original:
Let's get straight to the point: the controls are just outright bad. I don't mean unpolished, I mean bad, as in: wtf?
Your typical day in the world of Witcher 3 has you maneuver through beautiful landscapes and towns that have lots of obstacles that are hard to evade because the controls are just unresponsive and just not fit for this level design.
Every movement appears to have some 200ms delay and it just feels butchery.

For instance, you see a chest inside a broken hut at a lake which is behind a beam. Now approach it several times until you finally get the E to open it just for it to vanish the next second you you can't anymore. Then you spend quite a few attempts running against that beam from different angles to actually get to it.

Then we come to combat - could be that I'm just bad but it feels a bit like they took the worst from Assassins Creed and Mount and Blade, combined it, and then didn't know what they actually wanted to do.
Fighting against a single opponent - which never happens - is easy, you can riposte the attack or block it, then strike back. Since you always fight multiple opponents though this just doesn't work because... I'm still not sure, but blocking just doesn't work.
What works best for me right now is jumping left and right, then bashing LMB to strike. That's no fun to play though.

Mounted combat is just atrocious but so OP that it's sorta worth it. Now the genius thing they did was adding a horse fear bar so you can't just walk up to something, bash it, and it dies - your horse doesn't like that so you have to charge, and then hitting something is really hard.

Town life is just really dull, mainly because of the system they use where they spawn X amount of townsfolk based on your settings. At least there could be some funny standard lines like in TES 3-5 that are memorable, making townsfolk more believable.
In this case they're just zombies.

    Now to the positive part:
The game feels immersive, the graphics are great, I like the crafting system, the characters, the card mini game, all that is great and I want to play more, run around the map doing sidequests, typical RPG stuff.

    Bottom line
I like it and I'm willing to try to get better with combat and what not but it just makes no sense to me how they could think that this was a good combat system.

I hope they'll pump out a patch making KB+Mouse controls more responsive, rumor has it that with a controller it works well. Still, my colleague reported that he had the same problem with that beam at that hut.

The only negative point is that I felt like I was too constrained in my choices. In RPGs I want to be able to start a fight, insult the king, hit a villager that pisses me off... In witcher 3 you don't have this kind of freedom of choice. I want to play a role, either a white night or an assassin, a vilain etc... but I want to choose.

But I have to say the main quest is a bit boring with the usual 'chosen one' narrative and it always gets interrupted by the flashbacks of Ciri, which are not fun to play. The game could have done better without them, it would also add more to the mystery. The thing that kept me going were the side quests to be honest. They are quite well written and seemed to have more urgency than the main quest.
It's a bit of a bummer that sometimes the quest schedule can be confusing because there's lack of additional information. Certain quests have to be paused because you didn't level up yet, so at some point you will be juggling with a lot of unfinished quests that you have to jump back and forth. And some you can't even return to, because they have a time limit.

The game certainly kept me entertained for one and a half months, but after I finished all the side quests it started to lose interest in the main quest completely. But the game is well worth it's money.

    - The utility of the hundreds of items is hard to tell... there are so many recipes and items, and you don't know what to sell, what to craft... the item system is... a bit too much... this with the fact of being overburdened is annoying. I recommend using a mods that turns your max burden to 9999 so you just pick everything and don't have to worry about inventory management...

I'll cover it's problems first. The combat isn't amazing, however it functions well unlike that of Witcher 2 where you had to roll everywhere. The first few hours of the game were extremely hard then it got extremely easy. The main "quest" also had bad guys massively under-levelled so they were like Story Mode without any challenge.
Finally, because the game is so big and sprawling it was hard to maintain a pace for story purposes, was somewhat silly as you're on a life and death quest (with time limits heavily implied) but yet Geralt has time to play cards, help random peasants and go swimming in the sea...

Other than the above, its head and shoulders above any other recent RPG. The world is beautiful full of life, there's plenty of weapons and armour to satisfy all play styles and there's little to no evidence of lazy writing; pretty much all the quests were interesting to play and were more than just "Kill A, take items to B" etc It's graphics and soundtrack are also top class, nothing more needs to be said.

This game captures what it must be like to be Geralt of Rivia. If you've read the books or were at all interested by the first two games then this one is mind blowing.

It's these little things that make the Witcher 3 one of the best video game purchases I've ever made, and I've made a lot of them.

Haven't had this great of an experience for a long long time. For a game to be hyped this badly and not only to live up to it, but actually surpass it... gods, it's been ages since that happened. It's basically Game of Thrones just better, and I'm not exaggerating.

As you start getting into the game, you come across one of the best quest-lines I've seen in a video game ever, the one involving the Bloody Baron. I was a bit afraid that it peaked there, but it didn't. The game keeps that level and goes on with it. The main story line is just purely brilliant. And for a 200 hour long game, it never outstays it's welcome, never becomes stale or boring, and after all that time I was left wanting more.

All of this is aided by one amazing combat system. It's a bit difficult to master at first, but once you get the hang of it you'll have a great time. Number of different styles you can specialize towards(and change between, provided you buy the potion to rearrange your talents), whether swords(light/heavy), spells, or alchemy, it helps alleviate the stale that can set in during long open-world games.

Yes, it has a few issues, but they're more like charming character flaws, a really bad case of the popp-in being one, some stuttering issues, few bugs, and crashes(though only in the prologue area for some reason).

The one bad thing, for which I'll take of a point is that(very light spoiler ahead):

If you spent weeks trying to get the perfect Witcher 2 save file to import into your game, well... tough luck, CDP Red dropped the ball on that... badly. Some might get a mention, but some very big ones don't even get that honor.

    (/end spoiler).

But they make up for it by how they handle choices in the game itself. No longer are choices in the good/evil dichotomy, nor are they in the bad/worse dichotomy. Instead they're multifaceted, interesting, and good god will they nag at you: did you make the right one, I wonder what'll happen to them, is doing the right thing, the right thing?.. etc. And their consequences, whether immediate or not are laid out exquisitely, even for the smallest of side-quests. It's just mind-blowing.

Yeah, buy this game, and if the game's any indication: buy the season pass as well, then a lifetime subscription to whatever CRPRed makes. I know I will.

I really like the lore and mechanics. Geralt, as others have said, handles like a tank but you get used to it and after awhile you can get pretty good at dodging, parrying, and fighting with a solid mix of spells, bombs, and hacking away.

I really can't find any fault with the game except one. Ciri. The parts where I'm forced to play as Ciri are excruciating... I'm not a CGI guy and don't know how tough cutscenes are but I really wish they'd just tell me her story through cutscenes instead of making me do these tedious asides with her. At one point I spent a solid 25 minutes trying to climb a tower to save a side character. Absolutely hate it.

Otherwise it mixes up pretty cool monsters and I like that there are places where I can run into one type of beast I can handle easy and on top of a nearby hill will be another monster that's 10-20 levels too high for me. Even monsters that are way out of your league can be killed if you're very careful and do everything just right (though it'll take awhile).

Overall, I'm enjoying the hell out of it and I think anyone who is a fan of dark RPG's would too. I played the first two and wasn't blown away. This one is by far their best effort. Hats off guys. (Except for the Ciri sides. My God...)

First and most important, loot everything. In this game you can pretty much breakdown anything into materials which are all useful for different things. The hardest thing to determine with your inventory is, what can you sell and what should you keep. You'll want to mix a good amount of items that will be sold for money and what should be kept. You can figure this out simply by knowing what kind of build you want. This game offers some interesting customization for different builds. There's light armor and fast attacks with conventional weapons, medium armor mixing fast and strong attacks or heavy armor and heavy weapons. Signs and potions can be added to any type of build. Although I highly recommend picking two things and going with that. Don't distribute your points so widely when first starting out in the game. The game gets very difficult all on it's own, a bad build will only make that worse. Every build (unless you're trying to challenge yourself) will use weapons and physical attacks. Build up attack damage either max out fast attacks or strong attacks, pick what kind of armor you want and upgrade the armor skill ability then around level 6 you can branch to either Signs or potions while continuing to add to weapon damage.

Once you figure that out you'll have a good idea of what items you can sell. I don't use potions so much so I sell a lot of the ingredients. Although it's a good idea to have the basic potions. Search everywhere, if you're walking or riding you should be holding that instinct button nearly the entire time. It's very easy to miss things, that hallway which branches off you're thinking about skipping will have something good in it... I can promise you it will. I found easily the best early weapon in a game by going down a dead end branching path during the Magic Lamp mission.

Points of Power are places that will buff your Signs but the first time you activate them you'll get a skill point. Explore as much as you can so you can find these places, rarely should you take a main trail. Always go off the beaten path. Never run into a fight without being prepared, save often (duh) and read all the books/notes you find. The lore in this game is not only interesting but it will add important back stories to certain things you encounter. You may find some knowledge within a book that will help you kill certain enemies faster. Try to avoid buying weapons and gear, you can easily find better stuff for free by doing some searching. Keep the money for important rare items you'll need to either craft weapons/armors. It's easy to not get that super rare drop of that important material you need, so shops can help there. The best weapons and armor will come from treasure hunts and crafting. So avoid buying their extremely overpriced mediocre gear.

Explore all dialog options and don't always go with the first option you get. Without spoilers I'll just try to explain, if there's somewhere you need to go and there's a thing you need to get there, it's possible to get a few different options on how to acquire it, don't always go to the easiest option. You may come across a situation that you can either end now and be over with it and your quest will be completed, or if you're willing to do a few extra missions to come to a better conclusion you may end up being awarded something you'd terribly miss out on by rushing it. Terribly... miss.... okay you get the point.

Combat is very reliant on quick movements. Even with heavy armor and a protection spell you aren't going to be able to mash the attack button while being hit. Rolling and dodging are very very important to staying alive. Figuring out an enemy's attacks can be a bit difficult because the combat AI in this game is very intricate. So make sure you learn when the best time to roll is and when the best time to attack, it's easy to miss your opportunity on an attack. Parrying is also a great defensive and offensive move but you can't parry certain types of enemies, rolling always works but rolling can also make you miss a perfectly good opening to hit.

I personally recommend building Signs over potions, but that's just me. After seeing what Quen can do when it's leveled up all the way is just OP. It protects you from attacks of course but it can also heal you, knock down enemies by exploding when it breaks, return damage to an enemy and takes multiple hits to break... and that's just one Sign.

There's my review... go buy it.

A litter worse than Crysis 3 tho. And yes, I agree that the downgrade is quite noticable. However, considering that my liquid cooling system with overclocked i7-4770K, 780TI SLI, and Z97 deluxe MB can barely run game at 60fps with 2x supersample AA for transparent textures set in NVidia Control Panel, I consider such an "opotomization" acceptable. Transition to open-world went really well and even though there are some minor problems, Wild Hunt is an excellent RPG and a fantastic closure for this epic trilogy.

Despite all the internet drama around the visual downgrade, the visuals are absolutely beautiful, probably the best looking open-world game to date and what's even better, it surprisingly runs smoothly even on high details on my older rig. I was worried about optimization, but CDPR did a great job here. Beautiful environments, vast landscapes, but still very detailed, light and weather changes, those sunsets man...

Controls and UI has been significantly improved from the terrible consolized Witcher 2, fighting mechanics feel much more fluid and even though it's still not Dark Souls level, it comes very close and it's perfectly fine. I played on hardest Death March difficulty and for the most part the element of challenge was pretty solid throughout the game.

The most important thing about RPGs - writing, quests, characters, it's all excellent, even little side-quest activities often provide really interesting stories, there are tons of references to previous games, to books and even to our pop-culture. I caught a glimpse of so many, Fallout, Madonna, David Lynch, Prodigy, Fight Club.. just to name a few. Characters feel really alive, with face expressions and great voice acting, even though many of those faces and voices are repeated quite a lot.

As for the mini-games - I was a huge fan of dice poker from previous games, especially TW1 version and I didn't like Gwent as much at first, but once i got around it a bit and gathered good enough cards for my deck, it really started to grow on me and now I consider it to be probably the best mini-game ever in RPG.

Now to my problems with this game and why i don't give it a full score (even though it was very close). First, CDPR obviously felt the need to to fill this world with question marks, if every question mark was actually worth visiting, containing interesting quest, or something unique it would be great, but most of these are some random chests filled with junk, monster nests, abandoned sites and so on, where you repeat the same activity all over again countless times. Abandoned sites for example makes you clear the area from monsters/bandits/whatever just to get the 1:1 same result animation every single time, if it was there once or twice, ok, but there are like 50 of those. The same goes for all those marked chests and smuglers caches, I spent entire weekend just sailing the seas around Skellige clearing all those chests and selling all that junk afterwards, not fun at all, I know you can skip these and you can just go for the main quest, but the completionist in me just must do 100% everything the game has to offer and this felt like an artificial way how to prolong the game length, because in the end you spend almost as much time doing all this busy work as you do with regular quests. Quantity not always means quality and quality is always more important.

Another gripe was with bugs and glitches, after first starting the game on release day and realizing I can't even finish one of the first quests because of the bug and seeing all those extensive patch notes with each incoming patch, I just had to wait a few months to even start playing to enjoy the game 100%. All this patching and bug fixing should have happened before the release not after. Even now half a year later there are /still quests in my log that cannot be completed, objects often become inactive so the only solution is to restart or reload the game and so on, but all considered, the experience was relatively problem-free.

Despite this, I love The Witcher 3, I loved being in this world for so long and I'm kinda sad it's over. Until the DLC arrives... 9/10

I remember cutting a foe in half in a fight on the bridge, just to watch his lower half tripped and fall off the bridge. Spending minutes in a spot on a map, mesmerized by the spectacular view, is no stranger in this world either. My personal favorite is the way light glows in a distance from windows during darkness. Still remember that stormy evening I first saw Novigrad walls from a distance. In fact, I have so many on such small but precious memories from this game. Nothing but love to the devs for it. I think I might buy this game once more, just out of immense appreciation. Oh and almost forgot, the game is very well optimized, which is a unique achievement in modern times by itself.

A few flaws exits, however. First and for most is the jerky movement controls outside of battle, which sometimes make even simple tasks a challenge. It is a common problem arising from a console ported game. Also, on occasion, the weapon auto-draw system made me curse out loud. But on the grande scale of things, the flaws are irrelevant. This game is a solid competitor for the best game ever made.

Most NPC's you can't talk to and they all have the same faces and bodies, they must be about 20 general created npc in the game (by general I mean the ones you cannot talk to, which are the most) so you quickly get tired of seeing the same people no matter where you go.

Money is not very usefull in the game either, that is a problem with a lot of games nowadays which really pisses me off because I tend to be the sort of player that doesn't stop looting and ends up with a massive amount of cash and you can't do anything with it! The only real usefull thing you can buy is Maps that give you locations on the map, and they're generally cheap, and one gwent card (if you're lucky).

It's a very well polished game with some minor errors that could of been thought out off more.

I can somewhat forgive that and not trash CDPR for that, but I can't give 10, because it wasn't perfectly cool for a game that originated on PC platform. Also movement feels slightly sluggish but believe me, this is not that bad port, if you want to call it by name.

The good, so graphics are still good, maybe except flora. The performance is good, considering my PC is ~minimum requirements and I play on medium/high (with ultra textures) with stable fps(40+) in 1080p.

The world is huge and offers tons, I mean TONS of activities and interesting quests. Right, even side quests have story background, are filled if choices on how you can complete them and sometimes have unexpected endings. Most characters are interesting and instantly make you like them or hate them. Dialogues and voice acting are mostly very good. I like combat as well, it requires attention of which button and when you press, and opponents often are very challenging, so every fight is very individual (especially fighting bosses). Crafting and gearing system is also cool - it really makes exploring rewarding. Alchemy is okay I guess, tho I never was big fan of alchemy in games. Only duration of some buffs could last longer, to make them more useful and using itself more rewarding.

Overall, this game will bring you tens of hours of gameplay. Maybe nearly 150-200h if you will do everything what game offers. Despite downgrades and minor bugs here and there it's still a brilliant game that will keep you occupied for long. And don't listen to "zero voters" - game visually still looks okay and controls are fine (I play with mouse and keyboard without any issues). You might need to get used to some things, but believe me, it's not that bad as they say and you'll get rewarded with tens of hours of fun.

All the quests are very smooth and don't drag on too long. Even if there is a lot of traveling involved, I have always found it fascinating to ride through unexplored terrain on horseback, even discovering new towns whilst in the middle of a quest, which I may do upon my own bidding. The characters, you may love or you may hate, but they strike emotion, and that is what makes them unforgettable. The world is vast and filled with a myriad of things to explore. It would take hours for me to bore myself looking around the map, let alone a single town. It is very obvious that there was some inspiration from other games, such as Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. If you have not played either of the first two Witcher games, I recommend you play at least one to familiarize yourself with some of the core elements of the game.

I am afraid , however, I must address the graphics. If you were expecting to play what you saw in the 2013/2014 trailers, then you may be disappointed. The game was heavily optimized to keep frame rates up. In doing thus, the game has become a lot less pretty and overwhelmingly realistic. The foliage is clearly not three dimensional, the hair (even with Nvidia Hairworks) does not look very kosher, and some of the terrain textures look rather grainy. There is still some very beautiful imagery, but overall, it is definitely not up to par with some of the less recent games, like DA: Inquisition. However, this does not take away from the gameplay.

All in all, this game is a marvelous experience and I highly recommend you try it out, graphical downgrade aside.

A beautifully polished game that without a doubt has raised the bar on the genre. It is impressive in nearly every aspect, and the only gripes I have with it is the clunky character movement (the responsiveness can lag at times), and the AI which can be erratic/stupid (i.e. NPC doesn't detect you even though you are in close proximity and shooting at it).

Fantastic open world game. Great story, plenty of exploring and side missions too.
My only gripe is that there's so much to do and explore you wind up leveling up a little faster than they seem to have expected... so new side missions can be too easy.

    - Beautiful graphics despite the E3 downgrade controversy (the game is quite demanding as it is now)
    - Actually interesting and diverse side quests
    - Decisions often have real consequences, and they are almost never just black and white
    - Very adultlike, not shying away from themes like sex, war crimes and racism
    - All in all, the world feels really GoT-esque at times
    - Immensely rich content-wise, my first playthrough took 90 hours and I still had huge amounts of places to explore and quests to complete after that
    - Amazing soundtrack that fits perfectly into the game's world and its events
    - Bestiary and character list come in handy when trying to keep track of all the different creatures and people you meet in the game
    - Enemy variety is great and combat feels intuitive without being too simple...

    Cons:
    - ...But it doesn't feel as responsive as I think it should and can definitely take some getting used to
    - Battle preparations (potions, oils etc.) are quite useless unless playing on higher difficulties
    - Skill tree can feel a bit limiting and some of the skills are just pointless percentage stuff
    - Occasional bugs and glitches, although a lot of them have been patched already
    - Newcomers to the franchise can feel a bit confused by everything at first, albeit playing the previous Witcher games is not necessary to understand what's going on in this game
    - Can be a bit slow to get into, as is the case with most RPGs I've played

Honestly, this is one of the best RPGs I've ever played, a must-buy for any fan of the genre. Just don't go into it expecting a game like Skyrim.

Story is great, there are many characters, the dialogues are perfect. Many choices that affect the future of story. I will definitely play it again when i'll have more time and better PC.

Basically, it's a must-buy game, however before you get it, make sure you have a pad, like x360 one, the game is worth it.

Also if you're a hardcore player make sure you play on hardest difficulty - i started the game on second to hardest difficulty [only because of terrible ~30 fps rate] and it was like - the beginning of the game was quite like dark souls but eventually my character was overpowered beginning at around second half of the game, and 3shotting stuff and just yoloing some bossess isnt fun.

    Now, time for cons,
    - I really dont like the fact that once the fight starts it's hard to run away
-You cant jump during a fight, and it seemed like a good option in some situations
    - in fights with multiple enemies it felt alot better to not 'sticky target' the enemy. In DS2 it felt alot better.

So the cons are pretty much all about the combat system, and it probably could be better.

Still, the overall experience definitely outweights the cons.

Graphics-really pretty, especially faces and armors, animations are pretty good too. And game performs quite well, my laptop has quad core i7 and GTX970M and I was able to play on 1080p with everything on ultra except foliage distance was high (not much difference anyway) and hairworks were turned off, with nice fps rates generally staying in 40s with occasional drops to 30s and spikes to 50s, more on that in Cons section. I also turned off vignetting, blur and sharpening because I dont like them. You can tweak just about anything to squeeze the fps you want from your computer. Cities are filled with people and look lively and realistic with the exception of repetitive comments from some of them.

Quests-nearly every quest has a backstory, and many are interconnected, and while it starts off slowly in White Orchard by the time you move to Velen and Novigrad the game feels like a real living world with well written quests and interconnected stories. Massive improvement over just about any game out there. I immensely enjoyed the quests related to the main quest and didnt have this much fun since Dragon Age Origins&Awakening. Other developers should take note. And many quests require thinking, not too much, just enough to keep quests interesting, but not making you swear in front of your computer all the time because you cant figure it out. Game will also tell you what is the recommended level for a quest, you can manage to do it on lower levels, but not much lower, you get raped if you try it on 10 levels below recommended.

Voice acting-generally very good to excellent and pleasure to listen to.

Humor-game has lots of humorous moments that are well conceived and entertaining. Rock trolls particularly.

Combat-improvement over 1 and 2 and decently enjoyable, gets slightly monotonous after some time but I guess that is caused by restrictions from the books, Geralt fights in certain way and has certain skills and that is all, you cant have spells, new weapons and stuff, there is a crossbow which is a nice addition but not terribly useful except in some situations.

Crafting-it is a mixed blessing but I will put in under Pros, you can get some powerful stuff from crafting, but it can be tedious to find recipes, ingredients and right smiths, good for those that like to explore everything in the game, but somewhat tedious for people that just want to enjoy the story and loot or buy their armors and weapons.

Scattered treasure-exploring seemingly irrelevant and empty locations can get you powerful armor and weapons, exploring the obscure parts of the map is worthwhile in Witcher 3.

Difficulty-now it is much more balanced than in previous games, it has hardcore levels for the fanatics and Just The Story which is the new Easy that allows you to finish the game without too much trouble. If you found 1 and 2 difficult on Easy, no need to worry because 3 is more balanced on Easy and you will be able to enjoy the game in "tourist mode" though it is not a walk in the park, you will need to invest a little bit of effort however far less than in 1 and 2.

    Cons:

Graphics-the engine seems to suffer from sudden fps drops here and there, you are in the same area and moved 5 meters yet sometimes the framerate drops by 15-20 fps for no particular reason, good thing is that it is right back up so you dont notice the drop much.

Main quest-I found it to be a bit underwhelming and quests that lead to the conclusion much more interesting. Also in one quest writing is off and makes no sense to how a certain character would act, it doesnt fit his personality, lets say it is a quest that involves a king, those who played the game will likely know what I mean. Writing is generally very good but this error made me angry a bit because I liked that character.

Dungeon crawling-not much of that in Witcher 3, most locations are above ground and loot is stingy.

Economy-making money in Witcher 3 is somewhat difficult, you tend to have a lot of money when you are too powerful anyway and dont need it much. Before that you spend what you earn on obtaining a few items and repairing armor and weapons.

Enemies-not too many variants, this could definitely need improvement. Boss enemies are better and usually connected with quests which makes them more interesting.

NSFW-they definitely cut down the NSFW content compared to 1 and 2, yes there are still boobs and asses, and you have brothels, but overall NSFW content is not as strong as 1 and 2.

Overall it is a massive and interesting game with lots of attention given to details. Despite a few flaws, and very few games dont have them, it is an excellent game that is worth every euro I paid for it

Well, the Witcher 3 is one of those games. No other game I've ever played has brought together such an immersive and authentic dark fantasy world. The visuals, the soundtrack, the various locales, fantastic writing and characterisation and all the little stories, both comedic and tragic, scattered across the world of the Witcher make for quite the gaming experience.

I do have a few minor criticisms such as Eredin being a weak antagonist, and some other game elements which I feel could be improved, but there's no broad aspect of the game that I can say is outright bad or mediocre. Everything in the Witcher has been treated with utmost care and it really shows.

Prior to playing the Witcher 3, I would also highly recommend playing through the previous Witcher games, as there are many references you will otherwise not understand, and you will come to appreciate (or despise) certain characters more. While these can be recapped and explained to you through the in-game glossary, a short blurb is simply no comparison to the character development built up in two 40-hour games that came before.

    Overall rating - 9.2/10

The story telling and immersion in this title is nothing short of incredible. Ignore any low score of this game - here is my take on why some people 'wrongly' scored it low:

    1) Combat and Camera are clunky?
Not really. The camera is no worse than that of GTA IV which you quickly get used to and the combat is fluid and exciting.

    2) Movement is tricky
It was, but the developers added a setting that gives you the option to change this.

    3) Quests are repetitive
Seriously? I've fought with kings in foreign lands, swayed wars, toiled with the love of two mages, chased my (surrogate) daughter across the world, got into bar brawls, became a brawling champion, played cards, negotiated with Elves and Dwarves, raced horses, been in a play, searched the world for master crafted armour, fought in castles, got drunk with old friends and tracked/slain countless beasts from powerful vampires to packs of wild dogs... repetitive? Please.

    4) It's bugged and broken
Within a very short space of time the developers rolled out eight patch updates. Okay so not everything was fixed but it just improves all the time and improves quickly at that. Not good enough? Well, on top of that they also released sixteen (yes 16) free DLC updates - ranging from simple cosmetic options to entire new quest lines.

    OVERALL
The Witcher 3 is an epic AAA title that could be a justified winner of Game of the Year (dependant on Fallout 4, Metal Gear and Halo V of course).

If you're undecided on this title then you're seriously missing out on a magnificent game. If you like the RPG or Fantasy genre then it should be a no-brainier. If that's not something you typically like then I challenge you to play this right through and see if you feel the same when you're done.

I was not a fan of the first two games in this series, but I think the developers have made this game a lot more accessible for newcomers to the series.

If I have to compare this to its closest competitor, Dragon Age Inquisition, it's superior in just about every way. The story is way more interesting, the quests and side quests more involving, the combat more fluid and enjoyable, the graphics are better, the cut scenes, voice acting and animations are more polished, and the world environment more immersive. Does Dragon Age Inquisition have weather effects for example? Or day/night cycles? Or even children running around in the towns and villages? Nope. Finishing moves in combat? Nope. An addictive, in-game card game you can play? Nope.

The only real criticisms I have of this game are that there are still some minor bugs - graphical glitches such as two merchants or horses standing in the same space, items floating in midair, and peasants carrying non-existent crates around, or the occasional exit to Windows. I felt DAI, in this regard, was more bug free. Also, for some strange reason, the developers disabled the jump option in combat by replacing it with a sideways dodge instead, so you can literally be trapped in a corner surrounded by enemies because there is a low fence in front of you which you cannot jump over! And, there is no auto-walk or run option, so if you are travelling either on foot, or by boat, or on horseback, you have to hold down the movement key/controller button if you want to go anywhere when you're not using the fast travel option. The loot system is also a little underwhelming, as the game makes use of lots of crafting for gear, potions and oils, so most of the stuff you find will be crafting components such as string, diamond dust or various monster body parts. There is also still quite a steep learning curve, particularly for the combat.

Conclusion - if you enjoy action RPGs and haven't already got this game, what are you waiting for? Get the Game of the Year edition which comes with all DLC included. This was recently discounted at 60% for an entire week to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Witcher series, but should still be available at a reduced price, seeing it was originally released in 2015.

A great game that requires a strong computer, but delivers breath-taking graphics. Great story that will keep you riveted to your chair for hours, with a lots of great happy and sad moments. A simple combat system that is a thousand times better than The Witcher (which brings back a shudder.)
This is the game that everyone loves, even though there are a hundred and one minor issues. Pointing most of them all out is often met with a laugh and shrug (in a humorous way) and a mention of how overly critical you are. So here is the double standard list of the small and very numerous bugs and quirks can quickly grate.
    1) Having struggled through the frustration of the 100th ignition of a candle instead of opening that chest/bookshelf/etc. How could a company not see that, where are CD Projekt RED’s Game testers, shoot them all! And why does a chest need an unlit candle on it in the first place?
    2) The fact that Geralt can roll up mountains, still makes me laugh. While a fall of 5-10 feet is met with instance death. This lead to the discovery that Roach can jump from mountains, falling 50+ feet without the same death response. Further leading to the discovery that rolling up mountains and jumping off with roach is actually good fun.
    3) Navigating at speed can make it difficult to get Roach or Geralt through doorways. Extremely annoying and awkward in towns and tight places.
    4) The ends of potions that generally serve no purpose. Granted I made the decision of getting the Cat Armour which boosted my attack power ludicrously. To the extend I was able kill a wolf with a single death punch. Early on you realise you can get by with slashing and use of the signs, using potions/bomb seems like an over extravagant extra.
    5) The silly notion that you can repair your weapons in combat but can’t use oils… well that was an oversight!
    6) Overly critical … told you, but at the end of the game it all adds up.

But the crux of the matter, if this was EA, I would be more relentless … shoddy this … rubbish that. But this is a small company that is starting up. But that got me thinking, while they are still small by compassion, they have been around for years (Witcher, and REDengine, came out in 2007) and they boast around 230 employees. So half of me wonders why in the third release of this franchise they haven’t sorted these things out yet? It just seems a less polished turd than EA would normally dish out. And maybe it’s a bit unfair to compare them, though at this point I am still willing to give them the benefit of doubt.
None of the above is an attack on how good this game is and it was well enjoyed… Expecting great things for CyberPunk2077 (and hoping that they will decide to release it.)
But the perhaps the biggest shocker is that Ciri isn’t the only one with Elder Blood … Equine haired, able to teleport … Roach looks very suspicious!

The only minus is the inventory and crafting inventory. It looks like a mess and "sort" does not really sort anything.

    Beautiful, but broken.
The Witcher 3 starts out perfect
You’re introduced to a massive would where massive creatures roam and make their claims on territories.
There’s a sense of fear and challenge in this aspect alone.
As you travel the land of white orchard you hear people call out for help and you stop to speak with them and help them with their problems for some coin.
Even the tiniest thing such as helping an old woman get her frying pan back feels immersive and draws you into the world.
This is where you’re introduced to the idea of oils and potions, finding enemies weaknesses, using your witcher senses to find clue about what youre about to face, and preparing for fights, something that comes in handy for harder difficulties.
I feel like this was the vision.
White Orchard would be what the witcher 3 was all about, and then the game kinda just falls apart and its vision fades.
The witcher tells a beautiful story of urgency, and for that reason alone, the side quests and question marks that clutter the map in velen and other locations make no sense to exist in the context of the games story.
Geralt needs to get to the bottom of what happened, why would he waste his time with the problems of randoms and destroying monster nests.
There are some great side quests that actually tie in to the story, and they are beautiful and fun quests but the ones there just to attempt and make the world feel alive ultimately feel like pointless grinding.
Many times I found myself just skipping through the cut scenes of these quests.
This could have been fixed with incentive more than coin, such as weapons and armors like treasure hunts offer.
The witcher contracts should have been mandatory obstacles in your way of story progression.
These type of things make sense in a Skyrim type game where you write your own story, but in the witcher 3, the story is already established... you aren’t an adventurer.
    You’re a rescuer.
But as a rescuer there is tons to do to level up so you can take on the challenges that await you.
Again contracts and sidequests could have used this idea for benefit, making them feel like training instead of just a job.
You can set out in the world to clear up abandoned sites to repopulate them, you can go out to take down beasts terrorizing territories or just go out and fight random creatures blocking your way to a new undiscovered location.
And the combat is satisfying, so fighting enemies never feels like a drag.
You can block, parry, roll, dodge, heavy attack, fast attack, shoot at them with arrows, use any of the magic signs to shoot fire from your fingers, use a protective spell, magic traps, knock enemies back, control their minds, so much opportunity and combos that can be played with.
And while defeating creatures doesn’t grant much xp, they are still worth the fight as enemies drop items for upgrades, crafting, and alchemy.
The crafting in this game really is some of the best I’ve seen.
You can dismantle objects for items you need to craft base items for main items, it may feel overwhelming at first, but once you really dive in, it’s clever and worthwhile to figure out.
You can purchase items from shops and alchemists or you can explore the beautiful world that The Witcher 3 offers.
When you do level up, you can use the skill points in a vast skill tree and choose the perks you want to use, with up to 12 free slots for these perks. This skill tree can be wrapped around your personal play style or the style you need to take down a specific enemy as there are potions to reset your perks so you can respend them.
I’m a very aggressive player so I for the most part focused on combat skills rather than alchemy or magic.
There are also races you can do, but your horse annoyingly gets caught up on nothing and will randomly just stop which can lead to frustration.
And now my favorite part of the game. Gwent.
Gwent is a mini game within the game and im not ashamed to say that I liked gwent more than witcher 3 itself.
Gwent is a very addictive game with massive marketing potential, so get to making the app CD Projekt red.
    Now for the bad,
for starters leveling up in the witcher 3 is a complete drag, not only does it feel unsatisfying to slay hordes of creatures, the games design actually discourages it.
If you dare level grind like you’re supposed to in an rpg rather than stick to the main story, you’re punished for it by earning 0xp if you’re 6 levels or more above the suggested level for that mission.
Not only does it discourage you from going on your own wild hunt, but it makes you look at side quests and blow them off, why waste your time and effort?
The game also has many stability issues
I lost count of the game crashes at 10, this was only in my first few days of playing the game, with and without game patches.
The Witcher 3 makes the mistake of not constantly saving when you stumble on new locations or accomplish something tiny like a gwent win, causing you to have to re-do 10-30 minutes if the game crashes, gwent cards being random for wins adds salt to the wounds, as if the game crashes after a win, you’ll more than likely not get that card again that you were so excited to win.
I also ran into head floating glitches that really just destroyed the world and its immersion, and there was absolutely no polish or attention to detail put into cut scenes where it should be most.
Sure I expect items to ghost through objects in game, but in cut scene, it’s unacceptable.
Not only are there game crashing bugs in this massive open world, but there are missables which is complete bs.
Making a 200 hour long game and putting content in there such as side quests and collectibles and making them missable if you don’t drop the world to do them now is massively disrespectful to players and their time.
At the very least put asterisk around missable quests so we know to prioritize them, so we don’t get lost in your story, heaven forbid…and have to replay a 200 hour game again to see content we feel robbed of, or better yet don’t make them missable at all, which leads me to achievements and more bs.
The witcher 3 is all about choices, that being said it’s shady as heck to put in achievements that force you to make certain decisions, really lessoning the games experience having to try to spin a web around a mid-game ding.
I know you don’t have to trophy hunt, , but that isn’t an excuse to disrespect a players experience by forcing those that do trophy hunt to play by your rules… that contradicts the entire premise of the witcher 3 as a game.
While I was massively impressed by my first 10 hours of the witcher 3, there are too many flaws in game design for me to overlook.
But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a gorgeous and intensely immerse game with thought provoking story telling, over 30 different endings you can get and hundreds of hours of content.
    For what it is.

So on top of the main storyline quests, we have fully voice acted and cutscene-ed sidequests, and you get the usual mmo style go here kill something for fillers. Even with skipping the last type, you can easily spend 30+ hours in the game, which was the biggest pitfall of DAI. Story was over in about 15 and nothing else was worth doing.
The voice acting is top notch, level design is great, music is excellent, combat is a little basic.
However this being said, the game has a few problems:

The first half of the game is definitely better done than the second, more detailed, even at some points it feels dragging a bit but never too much, the second half feels a bit rushed, personal relationships with other characters (ex LI) take the backseat completely and entirely focused on Ciri. I missed the personal touch whereas you support Ciri but you need support as well from other characters and that never happens.

There are some occasional performance/stability problems that I am sure the devs will iron out

For first timers it will be quite hard to enjoy it full not knowing what happened in the previous episodes, so they will probably understand what they need to do but not too much why they are doing it

All in all I think this game takes the number one spot for a story driven fantasy RPG from DAO in my eyes.
Definitely worth buying, can only recommend it. If CD Projekt Red keeps this up they could become the new bioware which would be great. All they need to add on top of what they already have is to make it a bit more emotional throughout or just spread it a little bit more instead of bursts. More character interaction and they will get there.

This game has a great travel system (absolutely necessary for such a vast world RPG game like this). The regular travel is pretty well designed, and the game is HUGE. However, I have noticed that despite it's tremendous amount of content, the quality of it does not suffer. In fact, some of the most enjoyable content, is not even in the main questline.

I would highly recommend this game, as I have been playing it on and off for weeks, but the craving to play the game has yet to cease. Excellent game.

If you're a completionist be warned, you'll drive yourself crazy trying to complete every quest and start noticing your failing quests you had no idea you could fail do to poor quest activators/indicators and a quest design system. Also achievements are bugged, qwent cards are bugged, some dont stack and you spend hours upon hours collecting them all only to realize you cant get the last few in your deck because they didnt/still havent fixed qwent cards being stackable. Also to note some qwent cards are locked behind a merchant thats locked in a cage with a bandit leader thats suppose to drop a key to the cage thats bugged and for alot of users he never drops the key. Its been reported for months on their tech forums but never fixed...very buggy game, alot of flaws in their system. Crafting system is pointless, its better to buy greater runetsones you need then to go through the crappy process of crafting a blank runestone, 2 lesser runestones, 2 normal runestones, then finally get that 1 greater runestones...after all that you could of just spent 1200 on the greater runestone and saved 1000's of coin/supplies. Some terrible designs.....should of had more time for testing/bug/design flaws to be worked out. **update** 6/4/18** Changing review from a 6 to a now 9 after other games have failed HARD in comparison and this one has shined so much more in terms of a great story and fun combat once you get the hang of it. I'll actually be going back to play this again as most games today cant hold a candle. Yes, its worth a second play through even years later. Everything is marked on the map and besides of the marks there is nothing to find in the world.

The visuals are amazing, voiceacting on point, production even in sidequest from times to times breathtaking, satisfying combat tho its too easy (lack of stamina), The character develoment is minimal and boring, tho the pick perk tree with 12 slots could be a start for a good one. The perks itself are boring element and other systems build around it are missing completely.
The mainstory is visualized very well, characters are great and it gives a good pace to "explore" the world. Tho its good it isnt outstanding as it is praised so often. It doesnt expands the story of the books and even adds less to it. Key elements are missing (in regards of the elderblood and the wild hunt, as well as the iceage). The antagonist is the worst of the entire franchise. Hes underrepresented.

This sounds a lot more negative than 9 doesnt it? For me its barley a 9 (i would give it anything between 88 - 90). The quest quality is amazing. There are so many quest which are staged so well, with interessting small or bigger stories. Everything has a narrative. The world is maybe just the set of the game but damn it is looks great. Dialogues look like cutsence. The game has a lot to offer but it fails at being openworld and using this feature.

Is it better than Skyrim? Dont even compare. Witcher 3 is a story based rpg which uses its opw as a beautiful set, skyrim is build around an opw. Skyrim for sure is the much better opw game and which for sure has the much better narrative.

Currently, some of these problems can be modded away and some can't. Firstly, the nights have been designed to be quite bright. Instead of seeing true darkness, we look at the a daytime world through a kind of blue filter. This is a design decision that is quite common in these kind of games simply because the majority of players seem to want it. For me, it destroys the immersion. I like dungeons and nights to be so dark that I need lanterns to see around. It's more realistic and scary! Secondly, there are few immersive touches that I feel are missing, such as the ability to on chairs and benches like you can in Skyrim. These simple, pointless actions are half the fun in role playing games for me. It's a pity Witcher 3 is complicated to mod. If it were as easy to mod as an Elder Scrolls game, I would have not brought up these points. Expand

I really was hyped for this game although I did not play the precedessors. I bought myself a new gaming rig right now so I could enjoy this new release in it's full glory and to hard test my new hardware.

I had to wait for my new rig and for the games key until two weeks after release and read a view reviews here about it. I got to say I tend to read the negative reviews first to get an idea of what might be not so pleasant about the game. Those negative Nancys got me for quite some time and I first was grateful I did not pay extra for the game - it came with my video card.

Those claimed down points were mostly grafics, controls and character development.

All I can say to this is: What the **** is wrong with people?!

Jesus! This brings back my personal memories of Gothic 2 where I was drawn in as a teenager for weeks.

Despite my nostalgic feel I can only say this game is top notch in every aspect.

Every time I launch this game I am overwhelmed by it's visual beauty - I stop often and just walk (!) through villages or with a torch in a dark forest at night to experience this great atmosphere. Just awesome. I normally do not feel the need to spend more time than necessarry in games so I fast travel or run in villages and cities but not here.

Concerning the controls all I can say is that it is nothing new but far from being "obnoxious" or "awful". I am playing at the hardest difficulty which gives the game another feel of realism and authenticism since health is only restored with the potion or with food. Fights feel also a lot more challenging because blind rushing into enemies and blade flurring serves you nothing but ending dead soon after. You got to plan, you have to dodge, roll, break guards and use your signs to overcome enemies, be them beast or man.
The controls always feel right to he point and accurate enough to fight tactically. Maybe the other reviewers have no talent in general for games...

Last but not least the story. What are people expacting here? I may just beat 25% of the game yet but in my opinion it is a decent dark fantasy story with interesting characters and entertaining side stories.
You cannot reinvent the wheel and it is no stand alone or new story beginning, it is a sequel of a series based on books. No wonder you cannot play as an old wizard killing enemies with fire bolts or a she elf archer. The protagonist is Geralt of Rivia a professional Monster slayer and swordsman. You know this before playing the game so it's no surprise you cannot create a new character or play as an archer.
You either like Geralt and his style or not. End of discussion.

To sum it up: One of the best games I played in my 18 years of gaming. Hands down.

As a lifelong gamer, this is the game I was waiting for. Tough, fair, demanding, emotional and pure, unadulterated fun. If this is a taste of what the future of gaming is like, I'm salivating for more. CDPR are a true "gamers" developer, and I tip my hat off to them.

    >Fighting mechanics feels to simple - as you can simply spam attack to kill enemies making it feel very lazy
    >When riding through the world on you're horse. It is very annoying when Roach runs into the smallest things which then activates an annoying animation that wastes time, or whilst in combat makes Roach tip you off

As an avid Elder Scrolls player this is very refreshing. How big the scope of the game is remains to be seen but you feel the sheer scale of it all in everything. I was not on the hype train so I wasn't expecting anything. I only recently "got into" The Witcher series after having bought TW2 cheaply on Steam. Finished it and quite liked it. Pretty small and confined space-wise which was my only gripe about that game. TW3 seems to have fixed that and then some. Needless to say having no expectations, this has blown me away. Can't wait to play this game again when I'm not, which again, Morrowind was the last game to invoke that feeling.

I don't get the moans about performance at all. I run the game on Ultra with a few settings (foliage, shadows) on high and hairworks off (very ubersampling-like in that it doesn't seem to add that much but it eats VRAM like no tomorrow), at 60FPS @1080 on a single GTX 970. Which is by no means a cheap card but I was expecting a lot less reading some of the reviews here. Overall, Very, very impressed. Also if PS4 (which I own) manages to produce these graphics I am amazed, even though it's at 30FPS maximum.

Early candidate for Game of the Year for me.

Something you did that you thought was insignificant can come back with real consequences hours down the line. Visually the game is great and has massive scale, and I am surprised that I can run it on all Ultra + hair works with an I7 920 and a 780TI @ ~40-45 FPS. If you are able to run this game on Ultra I would recommend getting it on the PC, it doesn't even compare to what it looks like on consoles. This is game is not something you want to miss. Only downside of the game is glitchy horse movement/combat, the camera can be awful sometimes especially when you're fighting a boss and get into an enclosed area, would not recommend playing this with a mouse/keyboard. Side note I definitely get a kick reading the reviews of the people who scored this game at anything less than a four. The graphics and storyline alone set this game apart to be at least a decent game, add in the combat, the voice dialog and the customization and the points just increase.

In conclusion this game is near impossible to put down after playing for an hour, and a must get game for any RPG fan.

I was expecting more. I pre-order the game and I was expecting to get a product closer to what it was revealed in 2013. The game is nowhere near there, day one was a huge disappointment for me. CDPR just harmed themselves by showing something and delivering a sub-par product (for whatever reason). And yes, you can argue that it was a demo, vertical slice, or whatever you want to call it. But the bottom line is that if a developer shows a gameplay video and open the pre-order gates then people would expect to get that product. In the end I think a lot of the low scores come from angry costumers with undelivered expectations. Hopefully a lesson was learned, from the developers side and from the consumers side. I certainly will not pre-order a video game again.

RPGs are typically divided between two areas - Questing and exploration. Just like its predecessors, questing is the Witcher 3's strong-suit. Every quest in the game has a story worth experiencing - and they are stories that you have some level of control over. A seemingly minor decision can have huge consequences, and it's those consequences coupled with the moral ambiguity that the Witcher is known for that makes questing a joy; they also add to the games replayability. Exploration is interesting as well, and is often necessary as the loot that you can acquire is crucial to keeping an edge on your enemies.

The combat in the Witcher 3 is strong as well. Animations are fluid, landing hits is satisfying, and the game does a good job of giving the player several ways to approach combat, which further adds to the games replayability.

The Witcher 3 does have a handful of minor issues though. My game has crashed 5 times so far and I don't seem to be the only one affected by this. The games' stability could certainly be improved. I've also experienced some minor texture pop-ins in cut-scenes that can be quite distracting (Both of these issues could just be my computer but, like I mentioned, I don't seem to be the only one complaining about it and I took the time to optimize the game to fit my computers hardware so the problem is likely not on my end). Lastly, the game suffers from consoleitis - an infection that has plagued many PC games recently. The game lacks some basic customization options (being an FOV slider and the fact that some keys cannot be remapped) and I actually find the game to be more comfortable on my Xbox One controller than on a mouse and keyboard. Another console-related issue is the fact that there was a graphics downgrade so that the consoles could keep up. I have no qualms with the graphics though - the game looks beautiful and I'm able to maintain 60 fps and sometimes higher on a $700 PC. The game is very well optimized.

Verdict: If you like RPGs, then you''ll love the Witcher 3. Buy it if you're on the fence. Definitely a GOTY contender.

The Wicher 3 unlike what most sites say is not the Skyrim killer, and personally I vastly prefer the Witcher 3, or even Witcher 2 to Skyrim. Skyrim will always hold a special place in this market of open world RPGs, with it's masterful illusion of choice and complexity. Witcher 3 may not be as great of a thrill-ride as Skyrim, but the amount of depth it contains, certainly far exceeds it. (At least to me)
In conclusion, yeah Witcher 3 is great. Played the hell out of it.
Also, comparing world sizes is stupid. It's always about the damn content.

Nevertheless, the game is great. The graphics are great, the stories are interesting and the world looks so beautiful, away from pure technology. The aesthetic of the world is mind-boggling.

If you like adult fantasy worlds and have no problem with the given figure of Geralt (in many RPGs you can often create thecharacter yourself) and also do not expect a great but solid skill system, you have to play this game. Alone the card game Gwint in the game you could probably sell for 7-10$ on Steam (if it had a multiplayer mode ^^) and it would please.

The controls are good with a controller and I recommend that on PC. Maybe they will finetune the mouse and keyboard controls in the future.

So - in spite of the technical problems thatbothered me at the beginnig, I would recommend this game yet, because it justifies even these "hardships".

A grand masterpiece, with some technical problems - the only reason why I cant give a 10.

The game is very detailed and deep, so you might wanna take your time exploring. The game reminds me of Baulders gate long long ago, but with a more graphic touch. In this game, you will learn combat moves, spells, making bombs, potions etc, probably everything that you need to defeat all sorts of enemies. I've spent 50 hours and just got on island of skellige.. Its a very big world, very detailed terrain and a little 'sex' scenes here and there, which to me adds realism to the game. My advice is to not play this game more than 3 hours straight, else you get headaches, eye exhaustion and skipping dialogues..

Although, im yet to give this a 10/10, but perhaps maybe 9/10 .. The game mechanism is simple. Finish your mission and move on. Collect rewards & items, upgrade yourself, learn spells etc and of course, explore!. What i like about the game is that, you get to choose how you want to end to be. Be carefull what you respond to characters, it WILL affect later on in the game. So be yourself, trust me, you will enjoy it. Ive finish the game, though i must admit, this game is the only game that almost make me tear/cry, damn .. The story itself, makes you feel like your geralt of rivia!, lol. You'll crave this game even more after you have finish the main quest. Cant wait for the next witcher series.

Another note, It can get a little boring/tiring overtime, because its 'so deep' that it requires a lot of energy put into the game. thats why i suggest not playing it more than 3 hours. But nonetheless, the game deserve to be one of the BEST RPG currently. Im waiting for Fallout 4, should be a good platform to compare. This game will definitely set the bar for other developers to follow. Other things that i like is that some DLC's are free, yes hear me right!.. And also try to get the expansion pass, that will add another 30 hours of gaming time.

If you have a lot of time, and loves games like fallout 3, gta 4/5, far cry, then this game is for you. If you're not into detailed RPG games, and you want simple hacking and slashing kinda games. then this game will bore you within hours.

My verdict 9 out of 10 .. excellent game but not perfect yet. I wish it could give me 200 hours of playing time. Btw, keyboard and mouse is sufficient. You dont really have to get a game controller.

Edited* = I finished the game within 85 hours and currently at level 35.

The vast majority of quests involve (highly) creative plots, in-depth characters and meaningful choices. The combat is engaging and offers a diverse array of defensive/offensive tools to use. Bombs, crossbows, swords, maces, axes, potions, sword oils and signs. The signs are basically like jedi powers, (similar to mass effect abilities as well), that you can use to help you in fights. There's a parry mechanic when fighting other swordsman, but the dodge and roll mechanic is what really gives you the freedom to position yourself better. And unlike AC, enemies don't attack you one by one. They come at you all at once and while it can be frustrating at first, it becomes a rewarding challenge. There's of course a complex skill tree as well.

My only main beef is the way the main character and his horse interact with objects and terrain. For lack of a better word, it can become extremely derpy and frustrating, especially when trying to get out of a puddle, because for some reason Geralt forgets how walking works. The horse can get stuck on tiny rocks, or jammed on a small 0.5ft cliff as if there's an invincible, impenetrable wall in front of it. These bugs aren't game breaking by any means and you learn to avoid them, but they can be bothersome nonetheless.

I was hooked from the first day and can't get enough of it. The story is captivating, the locations are immersing and there is so so much exploring today if one does not wish to blast through the main plot.

The combat system has improved from Assassins of Kings but to be honest, it is not too challenging. For every boss or high-level opponent there is a strategy one can use to defeat him/her/it without too much vitality loss. I'm only as far as Novigrad in the main story, but that's the impression I get so far; I can kill level 18-19 monsters quite easily while being a level 15 myself.

The Gwent card game is absolutely sick - I recommend it to any and all Wild Hunt owners.

One thing that plagues this game is one that is near-inevitable for games of this scope - bugs and glitches.
Several quests are impossible to complete (e.g. Fool's Gold, Empty Coop) and the movement (especially on horseback) can often be quite annoying. These, however, are just minor problems and do not detract from what is an excellent game and in my opinion, worth every penny of the 53EUR I paid for it.

P.S. 16 pieces of FREE DLC for all purchasers doesn't hurt either

Witcher 3 offers everything you could want from an RPG - in-depth character development in the main story, dozens of side quests and treasure hunts to distract you, and a satisfying combat system, particularly on the harder difficulties (which I recommend you play the game on Hard, at the least).

In terms of the main story line and side questing, you'll find yourself addicted to discovering the fate's of individuals and whole communities. A decision you make on any quest may have minor, or major, implications further down the road. For example, you may come across a criminal chained next to a river as punishment for his crimes, awaiting an inevitable pack of Drowners to tear him to fleshy pieces - you let him live, he gives you a reward later in the game. You leave him be and you may rediscover his body torn to bits later on. Or, a person you assist in a quest may end up helping them become ruler of an entire people.

The only negative part of the questing is a complaint you may hear from many - over-leveling. Spending time on too many side quests and adventures may cause you to be too high of a level for the main quests, meaning you'll end up receiving no XP for completing them. Or, focusing too much on the main quests may end up making some side quests no longer worth any XP. You can track quest levels, but, I found there were a handful of quests I just found too late or was never able to get around to.

I won't go into too much detail on the combat, but overall, it was high risk, high reward and a lot of fun. Failing to prepare for a fight wouldn't necessarily mean certain death, but, it could mean a fight ends up being much more challenging than you wanted it to be. However, because of a relatively poor sorting system in the inventory, I found myself rarely using any potions that would help my character in combat, purely because I didn't want to look through the 30 potions I'd made to find the one I needed. You may hear some people say these potions are necessary on higher difficulties, but, I never found this to be the case after level 10-15. I also find it mostly a nuisance to have to pull up the inventory to apply one of about 12 blade oils to my blade, which would provide a marked improvement to my damage output depending on the enemy. I opened menus in this game more than I ever have for any other game. Ever.

But, none of these issues dock the game too much in my opinion. Some people may like the intricate fighting preparation - I find it only enjoyable to a degree. But, the emotion, dangerous situations and storytelling prowess of the game makes it a worthwhile purchase for anyone. I put in about 184 hours completing about 90 percent of the side quests, finding a majority of the hidden treasures and the whole main story.
