I wanted to like this a lot more than I did.

I think The Sims 4 Dynasties is a mid-range expansion. I like the clothes and crowns it offers, and the scandals are a nice addition to the game. Building and nurturing a dynasty isn't my style of play, but for many, they'll definitely add a lot more fun to the game.

While some of my appreciation is clouded by my disappointment in what Royalty & Legacy could have been, rather than what it is, I can still see the care that’s gone into this pack’s overall design, and it does add plenty of neat, smaller features that make Sims life more meaningful.

The Sims 4: Dynasties and Lineages offers a world rich in storytelling and an innovative noble career path, but loses momentum due to reused content, bugs in the scandal system, and a Build/Buy mode that does not justify its status as a full expansion.

Preferences really are the deciding factor on whether a player will get use out of The Sims 4 Royalty & Legacy or not. If you’re on board with ridiculous storytelling and scandals, hedonistic opulence, and a world that’s a little bit magic, you’ll likely have fun with Royalty and Legacy, despite its shortcomings. It’s not the most well-rounded pack, and perhaps not worth the king’s ransom of $39.99, but it inspired one of my favorite in-game stories I’ve played out in a long time, which definitely counts for something.
