With every second of gameplay as agonizingly riveting as the next, The Forest is a stellar study in horror, survival, and anticipation. When in its element, The Forest is as worthy as any title costing three times its purchase price. When not, the low production budget peeks perniciously through the cracks of this otherwise superbly thrilling indie.

The Forest begins as a great survival game, but soon becomes mediocre due to its dull action. The poor gameplay mechanics and narrative are some of the elements that make it hard to recommend this game.

  1. The Forest remains a huge achievement, and a survival horror game that somehow manages to keep those two elements surprisingly separate and yet let each impose upon the other in very interesting ways. I do wish it had been tidied and bug-fixed by now, but I can’t stop wanting to play despite it.

Don't buy this game if your looking for a nearly completed game. I got a LOT of bugs, including randomly dying, and no way to save my game. Items combine, duplicate, etc. Also, the game performs really badly atm. I'm running it on a GTX 760, and i get about 30 fps on the highest settings, while I get around 45 in Battlefield 4. If you have a low end PC, don't expect to run this game at high frame-rates. The combat is also pretty clunky. The flare gun shoots as fast as you can click with no reloading or cooldown, and infinite ammo.
All of that being said, this game definitely has huge potential. The time the game wasn't completely bugging out, it was actually decently scary. And it looks like it probably has a good story behind it. The survival elements are pretty cool as well. It allows for custom buildings, which is always a plus side. The team seems like its very open to bug reports as well. Basically the point I'm trying to get across is, if you can get passed the incredibly low frame-rates, massive amount of bugs, and clunky combat, I can definitely recommend this game to you.

I quit playing pretty quickly do to the immersion breaking of enemies spawning inside your walls you built. It took me forever to build up 3 big walls around a cliff only to find out the walls are pointless because enemies just spawn inside. This is very unacceptable for a base building game. The build system is also very outdated and needs to be reworked for better usability like that of Rust. I just thought about trying to go back and play this game again and see if that "enemy spawning inside your walls" bug was ever addressed. It wasnt. So i wont go back and play it, and i'll give it 0/10 for bad base building interface and immersion breaking bugs. Thanks for reading. Full Review »
