Cave are really interesting and fun (and horrifying) to explore, requiring many hours and progression by unique items. Best done by marking explored areas with self built lamps, and with constant reacquiring resources.
Finally in the end you discover a unique area where you discover the background and immensely deep story.

Atmosphere with visuals and sound are nice, but not perfect with latest technology. It runs extremely well on older hardware.
Building is not always perfectly under control, but quite workable. Some minor bugs and no save point for the end (which was difficulty wise not needed and gave the final decision impact. But made for a very long final run).
It has some useful mods you should look into.
Prepare to study up on game basics and look into it's wiki, or else you likely will have some quite frustrating experiences.

In summary it was a very impressive experience.

What can be seen as a difficult and buggy experience at first, quickly evolves into hours of game play and countless questions about the lore. The Forest is an immersive experience that slowly drags players into a sense of comfort only to take it away with new horrors unleashed. Easily one of the best survival/horror releases of this year with an intriguing story to boot.

Seriously half the people including myself initially don't understand this game. Anyone who claims there isn't enough crafting is wrong , as after 55 days in im still finding cool stuff from a secret evil church to a full on glider. It's not minecraft but once you finish it you'll get that mode which is cool. Or the horde mode that's crazy. Because its not Ark it actually works and works well which means it's a scary horror story which has two endgames based on choices.

The optimisation isn't great and there's a few glitches but nothing bad considering how much is going on.
The music is none existent outside of musical tapes but the sound is terrifying ..truly scary.
The gameplay is high mearning curve and finickity at times bur plenty of options.
Lastability is months or years as every time you play its different with random starts and locations and new updates. No microtransactions at all.

The combat isnt destiny but its brutal and fast with awesome weapons.
Overall the attention to detail is spectacular with many stories told through the environment as much as the lore through collectibles.
The multiplayer is a little buggy but amazing fun and an entirely different experience.
So i'd say buy it as it's cheap and play it and dont give up.
Use your second device as a game support tool as there are interactive map apps. And the wiki is cool though don't spoil many of the brilliant secrets and surprises.

I've played games for 20 plus years on all formats and across every genre and i was amazed to find it is one of the best game experiences i've every played and beyond value for money. Give it a chance and you won't be disappointed.

Was a decent game, but it feels unfinished and abandonded till this day. Building was long and boring, you couldnt destroy your building to get at least some of the materials back. I don't recall many bugs to be honest. Maybe when multiplayer mode was first introduced. Still, it was nice going back to build a base but was boring after a few hours and there was no incentive to go back and continue.

Relatively, I haven't played it much. But I enjoyed the game. It was scary to experience every night. But the games have problems and disadvantages. One of which is a small variety. The first days everything happens very quickly, but later everything abruptly becomes a routine and the game becomes very boring.

Nice survival game, but very boring gameplay. The plot is generally good, but unfortunately very commonplace and predictable. The game is exclusively for co-op entertainment. I doubt it will be really fun to play it solo.

The crafting system is good but not great; I wish with the updates they would add more things to craft. My main gripe is the fact that there really isn't much of a back story to drive you through the game. Whether or not this will come once the game is officially launched; I suppose we all wait and see. That last phrase has seemed to be on repeat for me with this game..."we'll wait and see".. there are alot of elements to this game that could be added to..but...we'll wait and see.

The Forest has been in "development" for a long time now. One thing that worries me is the fact that this game was picked up by consoles. Once that happened it seemed as though the devs stopped adding content to the PC version.

Because of the solitude this game exudes; I would strongly recommend playing online with a friend! Connectivity has always been strong with minimal to no lag or frame rate issues.

I've also had them climb things and jump around. I made tons of Molotov cocktails to defend myself and ended up burning myself (and them) a lot. The crafting is balanced and not too difficult and I haven't found any real bugs except for falling through the floor in the room of death, lingering fires, enemies occasionally jumping up really high or sometimes teleporting near you (startled me so much I accidentally dropped a Molotov and hurt myself) and miscellaneous UI bugs, such as rocks being called "RAW FISH." The bugs are nothing (not only because they're not very severe, but also because the game is in very early alpha).

Beautiful world with a vast sense of scale from the beginning. The inhabitants of the jungle are completely terrifying and will climb trees and hunt after you, leaving you in a cave surround by bodies. The crafting is interesting and well formed. Trees toppling is amazing to watch and I can't wait for more features, including CO-OP to be added to this alpha.

First-off this game is buggy as hell. Don't buy this game if your looking for a nearly completed game. I got a LOT of bugs, including randomly dying, and no way to save my game. If you have a low end PC, don't expect to run this game at high frame-rates. The combat is also pretty clunky. The flare gun shoots as fast as you can click with no reloading or cooldown, and infinite ammo.
All of that being said, this game definitely has huge potential. The time the game wasn't completely bugging out, it was actually decently scary. And it looks like it probably has a good story behind it. The survival elements are pretty cool as well. It allows for custom buildings, which is always a plus side. The team seems like its very open to bug reports as well. Basically the point I'm trying to get across is, if you can get passed the incredibly low frame-rates, massive amount of bugs, and clunky combat, I can definitely recommend this game to you.

The world is absolutely lush and beautiful, apart from the occasional low textures. The inhabitants of the island are not very friendly (and creepy as all hell) and that is made clear from the very beginning. The crafting system as well as the inventory system is top notch.
Crafting shelters, traps and storage units takes a lot of work, as it should! You have to keep getting food or resources constantly at least in the beginning, they really captured the essence of survival.
Really looking forward to future updates as well as the full game!

Combat is really unforgiving and exploring the caves next to impossible. You can build some bone armor but that lasts for about receiving 2 hits.
Once you face these weird babies or the mutant, 3 hits and you are dead. I don't see the fun in that.

    - Not much tutorial is needed
    - Coop!

    Cons:
    - Bugs galore - structures disappearing, enemies running in circles, climbing spikes like they're nothing, the ability to fall a mile on a turtle shell and not die, a multiplayer exploit to dupe items that has existed for over 3 years, enemies spawning inside your walls, pots used for drinking water exploding when a fire goes out...
    - The lighting model, in its efforts to produce something cinematic, means your character is more blind than an ordinary healthy human
    - Dedicated servers are supported, but just barely, and by a horrendously barebones application that will have you scratching your head for a few minutes
    - Story strains credulity
    - The world is small and only gets smaller
    - The game was clearly given the 1.0 as a stop-loss so that the developers could quietly abdicate and any new feature takes months or years to be balanced and fixed, if it is ever working

Overall, it's fairly dignified for a Unity indie early access survival crafting game (what a genre, eh) but most of the trappings are still there, just not as noticeably. On the splash page here you'll see a review from 2014 saying that it's acceptable for it to have bugs because it's an alpha. Well, it's 4 years later, we're several RCs past, the game is "out," and still buggy. Buy it on sale.

Building and crafting is tedious as hell because developers thought it would be funny to make a game that feels like work. I played some survival games before, but nothing like The Forest in terms of time invested to build a rather normal base, the material requirements for everything is nuts. Exploration is boring because navigation trought the island is flawed by poor maps, poor art design, very few iconic spots and the lack of real points of interest. It has ton of generic "always the same" caves that you need to cover in order to get some key items, while fighting hordes of enemys, with a very basic combat system.
Story its non existant until the very end, and still then its really not explained at all, and thus not compelling at all. Ther is no text, no dialogue, no characters whatsoever. All in this games just feels dull and empty. And as of May 2018 still buggy. Not worth your time, believe me. If you wanna spent serious time in a good survival game with a good compelling story just get Subnautica.

The crafting system was okay, but that's about the only thing that was.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review was, at the time, using the Alpha build of the game. Much of what was written in this review is probably subject to change.

    -Concept and Atmosphere

    - The *concept* that this team of four developers has created is innovative and intriguing. The game really feels like an open world survival horror, something gamers have been missing for a long time. As I played the game, even its early stages, I felt like I was being hunted by the cannibals and hunting them at the same time. The game doesn't guide you, apart from the survival book presented to you, which I really liked; because that is partly what makes it a survival horror game.

    -Game-play
While this game is still in Alpha build, the game-play is solid and, surprisingly fun. The crafting system and the survival mechanics are a welcome edition, and work well; fishing; cooking; and eating all feel and look realistic. The freedom that is given to you is overwhelming, yet, this didn't put me off; rather I liked it - The ability to build practically anything you could imagine using in a survival situation, coupled with the choice to build anywhere on the map is addictive. The AI is pretty solid for an Alpha build. Cannibals will observe you from a distance during the day, hunt in packs at night, communicate over long distances, and generally will scare the s**t out of you. Female cannibals will mourn dead husbands, and the males will become enraged when provoked.
Exploration is key. While it is logical to try and hide for as long as possible, and build your camp well away from cannibal patrols, venturing out into the wild forest and discovering blood soaked campsites, underground caves, and cannibal villages is aesthetically and practically rewarding. For example, one might find some useful items that one wouldn't be able to find if they just hid in their beach encampment; like a flashlight or flare-gun.

    Graphics
My gaming rig isn't the most powerful machine. I only have a GTX650, which is now out of date; but the game ran smoothly on a custom medium-high mix of settings. It looked breathtaking.

    -Negatives
The game is full of them, which is to be expected.
    - No save game option, as of yet; which means if you die, you have to start all over again
    - missing textures
    - buggy AI
    - buggy animations
    - no established story (really) as of yet; so it's more like a sandbox playground at the moment. As the developers flesh out the story, add new features, I'm sure it will become more grounded in some sort of narrative (whatever form the developers are planning on utilizing).

Overall, considering this is an Alpha build, and considering what the developers have so far achieved in terms of game-play, and what they plan to include in later versions, I give this game an 8/10

To begin with this game is very buggy... The gameplay becomes really boring after a few hours, even if you play with friends. Creatures are creepy indeed, but that should be the matter of course in this genre. The building is on an average level but because of bugs it quickly becomes frustrating.

A great multiplayer game. Whether you are raiding a cave or you are improving your base it sure entertains. By not progressing in the story it gets quite improving.

    • For an Indie Game, have a great and reallistic graphics (Have also options for optimization, if you have a bad computer you can still play it!). [Graphics: 9.3/10]

    • Artificial Intelligence (AI) are pretty good. [AI: 8.0]

    • Map with a good size, resources are well distributed on map, complex cave system with lots of thing to explore, abandoned campsites, etc. [Map and Resources: 9.8/10]

    • Good crafting and building system. [Crafting: 8.5/10]

    • Good gameplay. Hunger, health, thirst and stamida works well and are a little complex (like, you need to know which plants are edible or which plants are medicinal, soda makes the health of the character bad...) [Gameplay: 8.9/10]

    • Multiplayer // Co-op - Have a little problems, because still in beta, but still good. [MP/CO: 7.1/10]

    • Enemies - Have a good variation: Animals (sharks, crocodiles, boar...), cannibals (There are different tribes and different types) and mutants (Armsy, Virginia, Cowman, Babies and BOSS). [Enemies: 9.6/10]

    • "Chooses" - In the game you have several choices you can make. (Examples: You can play without enemies, you can survive without following the story, can select the difficulty...) [Variety: 9.9/10]

    • Good to spend hours playing! (Infinite gameplay time) [Gameplay time: 8.7/10]

(There are more good things, but you can find them playing the game! Buy it, 100% recommended!)

Only the graphics is good in The Forest, the content and building are poor and boring.

If you wanted to do some custom more fancy building - we are talking about hundreds of trees to cut - that is absolutely insane.

The next complaint I have is about story.. First - the game lacks logs, tapes, on other stuff that would suck you into what's going on and make you actually care. The did very terrible job at this and lazy one, because there are very few sources of information and those don't even touch the subject of reasoning behind everything that is going on.

Final complaint are the endings - there are two and both are complete rubbish. One cuts a massive shortcut and the other one isn't even a proper ending. I think devs were lazy on this department, even for limited budget title they honestly could have done way more.

The first few nights are spent desperately scavenging materials for tools with which to build, hunt, and defend yourself; construction (or discovery) of emergency shelters is required to be able to sleep or save the game, and doing all this while trying to stay out of sight of the roving cannibals is a wonderfully tense and even strategic experience.

After about a week on the island, you should be well enough equipped to actually take on two or three cannibals in a fight if need be, and begin descending into the island's many cave systems which are dense with more powerful mobs but also peppered with more powerful tools. You start feeling capable of tackling the challenges both above and underground.

After two weeks on the island, the surface will have gradually become populated exclusively by 12-foot mutants and Dr. Manhattan clones, who can all outrun you like you were standing still and two-shot you once they catch up. Attempting combat is complete suicide, and most of the weaponry you've spent your time building up is now effectively worthless, save your precious limited supply of explosives. Any base you may have built on the surface won't be worth attempting to return to as you are forced underground into a winding array of tunnel mazes, fumbling around in constant near-zero-light conditions as your sole feasible means of egress. God help you if you haven't yet found all the most important equipment by this point.

    It's also still fairly buggy.

In short it has a strong start, but a lategame that I could only recommend to a C.H.U.D.

You wake up and just try to survive in a forest infested with cannibals. It's challenging as you have to worry about your health/hunger/thirst, make a place to sleep in to save the game, also make sure you're safe from cannibals as they are hard to kill on your own and they can be in packs. Not sure if there is other objectives but it's extremely immersive. A unique experience, I highly recommend.

May 2014 - Steam comes up with a new game in early access. We arrive on a broken airplane and in the cabin lies a woman. Bugs insane amount, impossible to play, optimization "wants the best."
End of 2016 - The ending comes out and it is not even finished. All we know is that Timi is still sick, playing harder. One bug is removed and a new one appears.
April 30, 2018 - It comes out of early access, there are still a lot of bugs, it's already impossible to play and now your character is even susceptible to cold.

    - The caves are dark as hell and very confusing, the times we died and had to restart from last save we noticed that it's really easy to miss collectibles and other "important" stuff. Also when it comes to the caves, the torch is terrible and won't help you as much as you'd like.
    - A bit buggy at times.
    - The map is really hard to interpret and it won't show you the marker points you place out, you can only see the direction to them in your field of view which can lead to being messy if you have a lot of them,

The horrifying atmosphere and setting The Forest brings to you as a player would keep you interested further more into wanting to reach the end. Sadly, the story line is quite short, leaving you to think and analyze beyond what The Forest has visually shown to you about the background of the characters and the vital importance of certain aspects to the plot, it wasn't enough which kept me and my friend pondering more -- yes, the same with any other story, there are plot holes.

If you love survival games, you will obviously love this as well. The horrifying atmosphere added to your desperate need to survive before dark is a feeling worth playing for. Cannibals are scary, and not just that, from day 1 Cannibals become more aggressive with their appearance changing while the Cannibal patrols amount increases, adding that strong Cannibals or what we call "Mutants" start to spawn in the over-world and will come hunting you during the night and day. The Forest manages to keep you in your toes as Mutants and Cannibals are very silent during the day and night, before you know it, you check your back they ain't there, you check again, they are suddenly there. The vibe I like.

I really liked the Forest, the story is great and interesting. I also loved the gameplay and mechanics. The map is great but gets repetitive after some time. I wish that there was an option where the map was randomly generated, and maybe a non story setting. Playing with friends was also a blast.
All in all The Forest is an amazing survival story game that I would recommend you to try.

Great game I can’t lie! I’m picky with games but for the price and obviously besides the bugs I had a good experience. Can’t wait for the sequel!!!

This is one of the best games I have ever played. It has action, story, horror (not the jump-scare horror), and an interesting moral decision that I will not spoil.

This is one of the best games I have ever played. It has action, story, horror (not the jump-scare horror), and an interesting moral decision that I will not spoil.

You are a plane crash survivor that isn't an expert at surviving but you have a guide that you brought with you. As you explore the peninsula, you find cannibals, mutants, and other horrors that will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Now lets talk survival. The mechanics are basic, but still cool and interesting. You only start with an ax and you can use it to chop down trees (and chop up bodies if you go that crazy) and you can use these logs that you got from the trees that you have chopped down. This can get grindy but I have made an elaborate zip line system to avoid this and you can youse bombs (and mutants if you are smart enough) to speed up this grind.

Now let's talk A.I. and enemies. As you explore you will come across many horrors, these are mutants, cannibals, mutilated bodies, and cannibal camps. The cannibles have amazing A.I. to the point where they actually feel humans. Examples of this are when you kill a group of cannibals but one escapes, they will come back later with a lot more. You will also experience cannibal fights between different tribes of cannibals, you will want to get away if you see one. They are pretty basic when you are fighting them, you slash, shoot and light them on fire. But they have weapons too, they youse flaming golf balls, clubs, scull clubs, axes, sticks, and also there fists.

Now let's get into the mutants. This is where the real meat on these bones are. there are three types of mutants. Virginias are women that are fused together which are fast and agile but easy to kill, armsys who are powerful in melee. They have tons of arms (obviously) and are strong and are the biggest threat to your base. And then there are cowmen. These are huge 400 mutants which are fast and dangerous, but not quiet. These will jump on top of you and knock you over. There is one other type of mutant that is kinda a spoiler so I won't talk about it.

Now we are on the scariest part of the game. You are walking in the forest at night, hungry and scared. You can only see a small radius illuminated by your torch, you hear a scream in the distance. "I better get home." You think. You start to run, but you are not alone. Something is watching. This is a common scenario that you will find your self in. This is not a cheap jump-scare five nights at Freddy's game, this sparks something from your primal caveman mind. Being alone at night is horrifying. Especially because you are always being stalked even when you are at home.

This game has caves. Lots of them. In fact, to finish the game, you have to explore them. You can find many effigies, mutilated bodies, gutted bodies, etc. You aren't safe down here either, there are still mutants and cannibals but these cannibals are different. They are 8-feet tall and pale. You will want to exercise caution well near them. The mutants are mostly the same, you will occasionally come across some of these but they are the same as the ones up above other than being a bit more powerful and pale. These caves also have loot. LOTS of loot. But most of the time it will be guarded by the mutants.

Now let's talk craft. There are 26 different items to craft. That might not sound like a lot but it is a lot. You will have to hunt and forage for resources and hides to craft. You will even have to go to the snowy north to get some of these resources.

This game has bugs, they aren't too bad but there is quite a bit. These often don't happen much but for most of these, you will have to be looking for them to find them. But for a small team, this has quite a bit of polish.

Did I mention multiplayer? This is a fun experience, if you have friends THEY NEED TO GET THIS! i have spent many hours with my friends playing on hard survival. We have killed so many mutants and cannibals to the point where our house looks like something from Hellblade. There are still scary moments, they just arent as bad. There are still some pretty bad bugs but they often don't get in your way.

Overall, this is an amazing game. If you have $20 and a decent computer this is a must buy.

It's fun to play with friends, the locals and their sounds scared me a lot, the survival mechanics and the tension of the caves are great.

Before, I didn't find the game attractive. But I was mistaken. You stay several hours even after the game is over. I recommend it to anyone who likes an open world and survival.

The Forest is an awkward open-world survival game. It's thrilling to play because of the intense atmosphere, but confusing maps and annoying enemies make it really hard for me to immerse into the game.

In a crowded landscape littered with a few too many survival crafting games, The Forest makes a pretty strong case for itself. With an open-ended world balanced by a story that moves forward, The Forest contains both freedom and mounting tension and provides not just the means for the player to survive, but a compelling reason to do so.

There's a lot to think about when it comes to surviving in The Forest, but the balance between each of its interlocking parts keeps the game moving at a riveting pace.
