Skyrim is my favorite RPG of all time. you will never run out of things to do in this game. The amount of effort the developers put into this game is honestly amazing and I wish Bethesda would reach that level of legendary status it once had. Bethesda has now just turned into a money hungry and scummy corporation. They add meaningless DLC to all their games and they just release Skyrim on repeat on every console generation. it is honestly a disgrace to how amazing this game is and the impact it had on so many individuals. I think the game can make a legendary comeback if they just handed it over to the modders. Expand

Much-hailed games like The Witcher 3 or Divinity: Original Sin 2 have tried to compete with it over the years, but cannot match Skyrim in its overall quality, its free-form gameplay, and its understanding of what a role-playing game should be about.

This is partly due to what it delivers: an overwhelming amount of content and activity, great variety in all things, strong atmosphere and immersiveness, rich setting and story design, and slick and intuitive gameplay.

The other part of what makes Skyrim so great, however, comes from what it (intentionally) leaves off: There are no obtrusive cinematics, and the character system is refreshingly simple and elegant without sacrificing any role-playing potential.

Skyrim is a feast for both role-playing newbies and veterans alike. If you have not played Skyrim yet, but are interested in fantasy and role-playing, you should definitely give it a go. It is not just the best (digital) RPG you can get but possibly also the game with the most content for a considerably small price.

To clarify I am only taking into account Skyrim and the DLC that fallowed, modding will not be taken into account; if it was it would be 10, as the game with modding has so much replayability its absurd with over 1.9 billion downloaded mods on nexus. The modding community has practically made this game for me.

Okay so Skyrim is set in the world of Tamriel in the land of well Skyrim.

The modding community has practically made this game for me.

Okay so Skyrim is set in the world of Tamriel in the land of well Skyrim. First off this world is huge and with the added DLC even bigger with the main land of Skyrim aswell as Solstheim and Castle Volkihar (I think?). The world has alot to explore with many dungeons, nearly 200 of them in fact unfortunately many of them feel very similar however. The game offers many quests with a fairly long main story and alot of side quests, one thing I appreciate about the side quests of Skyrim is many don't feel like quests to just give the player a little xp and gold for killing 5 enemies then returning, alot of them have little stories to go along with them which makes the world feel richer and more alive; as the NPCs how hand out these quests don't just end up feeling like statues to boost leveling.
The main story of the base game in my opinion has always felt somewhat dull, it never really interested me to the point of me being excited to see what would happen next; this is even more so on repeat playthroughs of the game. The ones that stick out especially are the "Retrieve the Dragon Stone" and the "Horn of Jurgen Wind Caller" quests, I had always dreaded doing these quests for the poor pacing of the missions and they aren't all to interesting. The ending I will not spoil but I found the boss fight extremely underwhelming as well. I feel the Base game unmodded really doesn't hold up much today to be honest, and it does hurt to say that but I know it's true. One gripe I have with the game overall including DLC is the overall look of the game, it gets very tiring of seeing bleak snowy mountains and more cold environments. However this also kind of is in the games favor because when you discover a new area it makes the experience more of a spectacle.

The Dawngaurd DLC adds much to be desired for me, from the new faction to join of the already many in Skyrim, to the new environments of vampire infested lands. One moment I remember fondly is when you meet the two dragons during the DLC for the first time, it really felt awesome.

The Hearthfire DLC is pretty cool, makes the game feel much more alive and immersive with the implements of new Housing and adopting children, and other changes.

The Dragonborn DLC Is alright in my opinion, I really liked the look of most of raven rock but at some point in the DLC the color pallet changes to just green and black for the longest time, it gets very boring very quickly. But the gameplay of Skyrim in general make up for it and other short comings of this DLC.

Skyrim also has one of if not the most addicting leveling systems out there, it feels really rewarding to get new gear from enemies or create it on your own. And the game is balanced in most regards. Lastly the base game bugs, its part of Skyrim at this point... Its funny, but you'll probably want to install a bug patcher mod .

Serious now: Skyrim is, actually, the best game ever made. You MIGHT think that his younger and retarded brother is better (you know, that fake Skyrim, made by a Poland game company), but you are wrong. In Skyrim you don't play with a generic medieval hero who is a ' badass **** cool witcher', YOU ARE the character. You answer the questions, you do your decisions based on what you think that is right.

This game is, from what i know, the best "Lol do whatever you want just make sure you will have fun okay?" and that is amazing. I could talk about this game forever, just play it okay?

The Elder Scrolls games are overhyped and bland and Skyrim, although the best of em, is no Exception. Stoywise those games have a really high Potential, but its is entombed in a Sterile Indiegame. Storytelling and Gameplay is so Basic that no Immersion can get to you. Its just sad and wasted Potential.

Longest videogame ever made? Yes. Skyrim is really long and I don't have a problem with that! But what I do have problem with is that it can get really boring sometimes in dungeons because every dungeon is almost the same thing and in my opinnion there are way too many potions. My all-time favorite game, the MVP of the RPG. But I still can't give it a full 10, because even ten years and a dozen ports later it's still a buggy messy. To me, it's been so long those are just beloved features. I still think it's a **** practice for a video game company to not bother to fix their own game if they're gonna re-release it that many times.

The attention to detail is astonishing. I have found myself in awe in many situations where the world of Skyrim reacted in mind-blowing ways. I am not talking about scripted events, mind you. You can find your horse -Shadowmere- getting pissed at some enemies and climb hundreds of stairs to invade a bandit camp. You can become a vampire lord and play the game as such and it will still make sense within Skyrim’s world. On your journey to a mountain, you can see a dragon flying around, minding its own business. That said, you can engage with the dragon if you choose to. In Skyrim, you can pretty much go anywhere you like, anytime you like and engage with anything you see. For a game made in 2011, the ambition is spectacular. Even Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall was extremely ambitious when it came out in 1996, so you may think Elder Scrolls has always been an ambitious series. What takes Skyrim apart though is the fact that the game totally delivers in most aspects, despite being overambitious for a 2011 game. I loved Oblivion, but I can easily say Skyrim is the better game (except the questlines) and as far as the Elder Scroll series is concerned, Skyrim is up there with Morrowind.

There is one more thing that should be mentioned. If you are into high fantasy, you likely have a special love for dragons. It has been 10 years since Skyrim came out, but it still is, by far the best dragon game ever made. Dragons are part of the game’s world and they never feel out of place. Yes, the fights can be quite easy, but it never feels scripted.

Music is spectacular, although a more variety of songs would have been nice. Sound is really good too.

In summary, Skyrim is the perfect comfort food. Yes, it is even more casualized than Oblivion. Combat Is bad. It’s very easy even in expert difficulty. But despite all these, Skyrim is extremely good at what it’s trying to achieve. Skyrim is the second-best Elder Scrolls game, second only to Morrowind.

    9.5/10

    My ranking of major questlines:
Main Quest (great) > Dark Brotherhood (great) > Dragonborn (good) > Dawnguard (vampire) (good) > Civil War (imperial legion) (good) > College of Winterhold (alright) > Thieves Guild (ok) > Bard’s College (bad) > The Companions (bad)

A great game that i have over 100 hours in and absolutely loved. The music is great and fits the world beautifully and the story is magnificent. There are so many extra quests to get lost in and I highly recommend doing the Daedric quests as they are easily some of the best extra quests.

If you really need to read this review, then you don't know anything about that game, you missed it, or putted it aside since it came out... Immediately close this page and run to play it. Immediately close this page and run to play it. Many people say that it will never be too late to play it, some still make various add-ons for it, but this is not entirely objectively. I agree with all hands and feet that this is a great game masterpiece... but of its time. It was created in 2011 and improved in 2016. Somewhere then I played it. But no matter how much you put on a makeup, no matter how much you paint the walls and improve the graphics with "special editions" - this is still the skeleton from 2011. Sooner or later it will have to be released, because there will be something to compare with, no matter how cool the story, mechanics and atmosphere are. So don't waste that time.
A huge open world, a huge variety of long and short adventures. There are so many nooks and crannies and atmospheric places and events that even after a month of intense play and searching with a magnifying glass, you still have something to do. A good system for skills with upgrade by using them... Since Skyrim was created, I haven't met as good game as that one of this genre and scope. Perhaps the third Witcher, but it's "a slightly different industry".
The only thing I can scold Skyrim for is a lot of nasty bugs, which, I think, were later fixed.

Beatiful game to adventure and explore. It's not and rpg though. It's a glorified slasher with different color **** that comes out from your hand or weapons. It' has barely any rpg element or mechanic, so if you're a rpg lover you're gonna need a lot of mods. Morrowind still is the best of this saga by far.

It is undeniable that the land of Skyrim is impressive to say the least. It is vast and yet densely packed with secrets to uncover. The epic atmosphere and richness of world building is unparalleled, and backed up by a lore that's had the time to manifest and grow over two decades, the world feels immersive and believable. That is where the praise for the fifth game in the Elder Scrolls series stops, however.

My problem with the game, is not one of technical issues and bugs; nor is it an issue with the infamous creation club (although these are both matters Bethesda shouldn't get away with). No, Skyrim's fatal flaw goes much deeper than that. In short, it is shallow. Over the course of the Elder Scrolls series, the games have become more and more watered down, to the point where they can longer call themselves RPG's. There is more to an RPG than dragons and a skill tree. in fact one my all time favourite RPG's, Fallout: New Vegas, has none of these things; and despite that it manages to be a true RPG in every sense of the word. Ultimately this comes down to the intensely real and eye-opening decisions you must make in your journey. Not only does it have four wildly different endings, but all throughout the world, there are moral questions that the player is asked to answer. This is where Skyrim falls short. There are no meaningful decisions at any point in the game, you are an all powerful protagonist, guided entirely by the chubby finger of fate; whether you like it or not.

To be clear I was age one on the release of Oblivion, my views are in no way tinted by rose glasses and I have no sense of nostalgia for these other games, whatsoever. In fact Skyrim was my first 'RPG' experience which is widely why I have so many hours on the game; I didn't know any better.

I don't expect the thrilling gameplay of a Soulsborne game (which Skyrim most definitely does not have). DnD did not become popular for its gameplay. It became popular because player could be anyone they wanted, and do anything they wanted. In Skyrim, though your character is nameless and voiceless, it still feels as though you are playing the person Todd Howard wants you to be.

Visuals are good (actually they were awesome but I first played it 3 or 4 years after its release), story is deep, complex and immersive plus being almost endless. The game allows you to make your own choices about a lot of things, making each game yous start really diiferent than the last. Customization is really cool: you can change your outfit, the way you resolve quests, people you consider as friends or not, where to live, how to decorate, adopting a child or not, getting married, becoming a werewolf or vampire,... The map is huge with varied environments. The 'Dawnguard' and 'Dragonborn' add-on's do bring even more discoveries and atmospheres.

The fact that there are so many gratifying ways to progress all along the game just makes me crazy. Side quests interact with the main one (even in a bad way when you realize you killed someone being necessary later). Modding is insane: thanks to NexusMod you can make the game revive when you thought it was dead. The bestiary is awesome and detailed, even if draugr's are way too repetitive in dungeons. Dubbing and acting is awesome for each necessary character. Soundrtrack is oviously incredible, immersive and powerful. Interface and HUD are ugly but you can easily change it on PC.

Unfortunately, despite the impressive production value and its greatly looking first 5 hours, shallowness start appearing.

A few mods can add patrols, caravans (fast travel that makes sense), death by cold (and thus an incentive for capes and campfires, making long travels a thing that need preparations and care ; was it so hard to imagine something like this Bethesda?) but unfortunately, no mod can fix the writing that urges you to go in yet another boring cavern with flammable oil and skeletons, or towns with 3 houses that look like a nameless village in real life.

Skyrim does have a handful of very good quests indeed, but the dialogue system is streamlined to the bare minimum, and you're basically the **** of anyone in this game ; you can't even refuse to start a quest, it'll end up in your quest log anyway. Not to mention you're encouraged to do any guild's quests instead of actually CHOOSING and seeing other factions getting upset. Sure, there's the civil war, but it is honestly mostly cut or broken content without mods.

Skyrim does a good job at building a world that makes you want to explore, but it is too shallow and too focused on its mediocre dungeon crawling to leave memories, a "good enough" triple A to kill some time and wait for studios that actually care about game design and writing.

Having played this game on various platforms and versions for well over 1000 hours, I can say two main things about Skyrim:

1- If you're new to the RPG genre (Not like those new games that is categorized as "RPG" just because they have a skill tree. Yes, I'm looking at you Witcher and Assassins Creed. ) and want to delve into a whole new world, then this game is definitely for you. It's casual enough for everyone to understand the world and story, and it doesn't have a complex mechanical structure like those old cRPGs. It's much more focused on action elements while still providing tons of roleplaying chances in an amazing setting. However, if you've played games like The Witcher 3 and expect those kinds of things, don't. In terms of story and storytelling, this game is nothing like The Witcher 3. Both main and side stories are clunky and you won't even care about them except for a few questline.

2- If you're an oldschool RPG fan who've played and liked games like Baldur's Gate, Planescape, Icewind Dale or even Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect, this game might not be for you. It's still a good game that you may enjoy, but don't expect anything like the games I've just mentioned. Combat is very action oriented with no room for tactics and all. Dialogue options can vary, but they're definitely not rich, it's mostly your typical "yes, no" type of options. (There's not even sarcastic yes.) However, if you're into tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons, the game gives you a HUGE chance to roleplay, even in vanilla.

There are some good amount of class and profession variations that you can do to roleplay. You want to be a merchant who only trades by wandering town to town? You can do it. You want to be a fierce warrior who earns his living by killing monsters and bandits? Sure, go ahead. You want to be an evil elf with a secret lair who secretly kills nords because of an old trauma? Hell yeah you can do that. You want to be a loving family dad while being a town guard? You might need a few console commands but yes, you can also do that. I've played this game with anything from "imma go murder every single man in this land" to "I'm just a peaceful dude who lives in a shack and sells rabbit meat" and I can easily say that every playthrough has its own delight.

Although, if you want to experience this game to the fullest, you definitely should install mods. Nearly all Bethesda games have an awesome engine in terms of mod support, so there are thousands of awesome mods for all your tastes that you can download for free and you don't even need a good PC to use most of them.

Overall, awesome game with a lot of opportunity for roleplaying, albeit with a mediocre gameplay/story.

    8/10 in Vanilla.
    11/10 with mods.

It was quite a great time, I did not have mods installed and followed the main quests mostly, doing some minor along the way. I remember that run fondly and sometimes get back to these memories.

Now, the other times I never finished the game, and usually dropped the main storyline after I got dohahkiin powers. The first time I used mods I went all out and have played for quite some time. The last time I went back to the side quests I never knew existed and the DLCs and used just the immersive mods that improved upon the game and its world. That time I felt empty and realized the game has never been as great as the others have painted it.

The game world does not really change, there are no groundbreaking player choices. Whether you go with Stormcloaks or Imperials is just a matter of liking racist natives or Roman LARPers better that the others. The grand battles are a let down, and the war is all talk and no game, really.

Most of the quests are just fetch/kill/explore dungeon quests with no real essence. I really hope Bethesda steps up their game after the Microsoft buyout.

Unfortunately, Skyrim trips and falls on its own (most probably, to make the cool-sounding deadline of 11-11-11) and just before it reaches perfection as the ultimate specimen of its genre, it self-destructs in a crucial aspect of game design: the interface and the peripheral components (inventory, journal, map, etc)... but that is not to say that Skyrim is anything but a truly majestic, epic RPG that will suck you right in its cosmos.
