Skyrim is now a decent game again now that modding will remain free for it. It might not be as engaging as its forebears Fallout 3 and Oblivion, but its still entertaining, especially if you know how to mod it with multiple mods.

It's a perfect blend of Developer content and User-made mods. I think Skyrim's Steam workshop is a great achievement in itself and shows how much Bethesda cares about its fan. Even 2-3 years after release, Skyrim is one of the most played game on Steam, right next to DOTA2, CS:GO, TF2, Civ5 and many more Steam "Giants". That should say a lot. Expand

Because replaying made sense in Morrowind. It made sense in Fallout 3. And was thoroughly joyful. Not in Skyrim. I played Skyrim for about 60 hours, as one character: i enjoyed it, but i did not love it, and don't want to replay this game at all, because it makes no sense of playing as a different character to me in Skyrim. But if you enjoy swords and axes, spiders and elfs, mead and ales Skyrim is an excellent game to sink 50 hours into: it has good story, good quests (repetitive, and somewhat boring caves), and the best part is IT CAN BE MODDED! Much-hailed games like The Witcher 3 or Divinity: Original Sin 2 have tried to compete with it over the years, but cannot match Skyrim in its overall quality, its free-form gameplay, and its understanding of what a role-playing game should be about.

This is partly due to what it delivers: an overwhelming amount of content and activity, great variety in all things, strong atmosphere and immersiveness, rich setting and story design, and slick and intuitive gameplay.

The other part of what makes Skyrim so great, however, comes from what it (intentionally) leaves off: There are no obtrusive cinematics, and the character system is refreshingly simple and elegant without sacrificing any role-playing potential.

Skyrim is a feast for both role-playing newbies and veterans alike. If you have not played Skyrim yet, but are interested in fantasy and role-playing, you should definitely give it a go. It is not just the best (digital) RPG you can get but possibly also the game with the most content for a considerably small price.

One of the greatest games I'm still returning to and always find something interesting to do. 1 point subtraction is for many glitches and poor console UI (that mods can repair). Has every anybody in Bethesda even SEEN a bow?!), underpowered destruction magic and list goes on and on. However you have to consider that Skyrim is extremely mod-friendly and with some time spent on research and installation of mods the game gets 10 out of 10 easy. There's literally thousands of mods adding to the world and perfecting it in unimaginable ways or fixing whatever imbalance or poor choice may ill you in the vanilla game. For that Skyrim is definite must play. So far I am 150 hours in it and I am nowhere near finishing my play-through. One thing I must mention though. Skyrim uses old technology that forces limits on memory used and is very bad in utilizing multi-core CPUs. With some graphical enhancements the game gets very unstable because engine can't handle it even though your PC is completely up to it. All in all Skyrim when modded is one of THE best games of your life. But you'll have to invest quite a lot of work and time in it before you even start to play and your love for it is going to be tested. Expand

I first played this game after the last official patch. When I first launched it, I was in awe. The environments, the voice acting, the action, the pretty UI, the weather effects. I was so immersed and it felt amazing. However, about 15 or 20 hours later, things changed drastically.

I realized that the poor leveling system from oblivion seemed to come over to skyrim unchanged. Basically, the game gets more difficult in terms of combat (NPC's have more health and do more damage) as the player becomes more skilled in any of the skills available. Thus if you decide to enjoy yourself crafting some cool armour or playing with alchemy, you're going to get smashed with more powerful monsters (assuming you have a difficultly setting of expert or more). As a consequence I was motivated to NOT try all the cool skills out there and purely do whatever combat I had going (in my case melee). Also I basically had to drop archery for the same reason. That was lame.

The combat still is really bad. The spell system seems graphically a bit nicer, but I only did melee and ranged. When you hit NPCs with a sword, to quote some person, "its like hitting them with a wet fish." Your sword just goes through them with no response. There is a blocking ability, but I don't know its purpose because you take essentially the same damage anyway.

The AI still is dated (seems to be the same AI for the most part as Oblivion). Sure, a lot of NPCs have daily schedule where they go around doing stuff which is really cool. But often you'll see them walking into walls, and they look very robotic. Its still pretty immersive though, but those little blips you keep seeing really ruins it for you.

There's still the issue of quantity over quality. In Oblivion there was hundreds of dungeons, but they were so generic and after a few you probably avoided going in them. Its pretty similar for Skyrim. For the first few tens of hours, you might not notice, but you soon will. Some dungeons can be very unique though, and they can be very awesome.

At the beginning of the game you would notice a lot of politic stuff and that in the quests. That was really surprising and cool, but then the main quest line went more in the direction of "dragon born" which was kind of disappointing.

In summary, this game is a great RPG, maybe a bit too quantity over quality, and too many technical issues, and more of a game where you can see it had great potential but it wasn't reached. However its a pretty fantastic game with mods. When I was following this game, there was a lot of cool stuff that was supposed to be in Skyrim, but alas Skyrim was not the result. However there's a bunch of fairly decent gameplay mods that fix this and expand: combat mods that make combat interesting, making lighting real, survival mods, so forth. For me I really need immersion to enjoy this game, and the vanilla game doesn't really supply that and kind of breaks it periodically.

Then "Damn this is buggy as all hell and to think I waited as long as I did and it still NOT FIXED!" and I want to give it a 5. The visuals are stunning. The open world aspects are SO welcome as I love sandbox type of games. The immersion is great until you hit one of the numerous quest killing bugs. Perhaps the most central quest line, when you receive the greeting from the Grey Beards WILL NOT COMPLETE no matter how many times I try or do anything differently. I have watched goats floating in the air about 150 feet off the ground only to fall straight down and then start to roam around. But the voice acting good. The crafting is very fun. Re-playability, if you can tolerate the bugginess is high. I still find myself hopping into the game when I can because I do have fun with it. That is as long as I don't want to alt-tab from the game. When I come back in I get the double cursor bug with is WAY irritating. It is also SLOW to react at times and you can make the AI bug out pretty easily. With all of that said I can only give this an 8. Or should that be a 7. Or a 5. Oh no it should be a 10. Hello! Ok this game has been out for a while now and i don't even know how i flicked to this page to read some past reviews of it, but after doing so i was so enraged i had to write my own.

First of all, let me make it abundantly clear, anyone who hasn't scored this game at least a 9/10 is either using a very badly made PC or they are regular users of grade A narcotics. That is all there is to it. On a good spec machine, the graphics are BREATHTAKING, especially some of the outdoor vistas. The various locations used throughout the game are all very atmospheric and the feeling of being immersed is complete.

Second of all, the level of detail and programming that has gone into this game puts any other software developer to shame. Bethesda game studios is one of the last great programming groups, and you only have to see the depth of this game and level of thought that has gone into it to see why. Its not just a game, this level of polish and detail only comes from a labour of love. You can tell the developers really wanted to make this game. Its better than any 10 other games currently out on the market, and whether that is a testament to the quality of Skyrim, or the degraded state of the game industry, i can't call it.

The fact remains, this game is awesome. If for some unknown reason you haven't ever played it yet, do so now and say goodbye to a good few joyful weeks.

Last point. I hear criticisms. Ok, when Skyrim was first released it did have some bad bugs and crashes. However that just shows how enormous the game is in my eyes, and that you can't hope to games test every bug out of a game so large. These bugs were very quickly fixed with a number of patches and the game is now bug free. The other criticism i hear is the minimum number of voice actors that were used.................really? You would mark and otherwise stupendous game down because they didnt use enough different voice actors??? Laughable. Some people just don't get it.

Even if you don't like this game because of the setting or the genre, anyone who tries to mark it down because they don't like it is simply refusing to acknowledge that its a great game. They personally just don't like it. I am sick of hearing references to Oblivion and Morrowind, people saying they were better. No they weren't. They were different, not better. Yes Morrowind was bigger, but it also had various faults that people seem to overlook constantly. Like Skyrim, when it was released it was also riddled with bugs. People are just never happy. I remember people used to slate Oblivion, saying Morrowind was much better. Yet now, apparently Oblivion is the best thing since sliced bread?

Bottom line, this game is awesome. Fact.

What is the definition of a good game? The answer is: one that You can play all along and over and over. So this is Skyrim. I have played over 200 h and I am doing it still. I have created lots of characters and visited almost all locations on the map. If You like TES You will love this game, if You like RPG games, this is a title that will take lots of Your free time.

The graphics, while not among the best of 2011 are still very strong and only help in immersing you into the world of Tamriel even more, from the snow covered shores to the dark caverns under the ground. The variety of things to see is rich as well whether that's waterfalls, mountains or old ruined forts. If you own the PC version of the game you can even improve the graphics further with the help of the brilliant modding community. I'd give the graphics a strong 9 out of 10

Now gameplay is something Bethesda have improved over the past Elder Scrolls titles from Morrowind to Oblivion and now given it a further upgrade in Skyrim. While It may not be the best combat system I've ever used it still gets the job done and serves up an interesting perk system to add to the experience, but I believe Bethesda have focused more on the exploring part of the game which I have no problem with, it offers something different to the so linear games we see dominating the market these days.

Continuing on gameplay, you can almost pick up and use anything in this game from buckets to tiny pieces of chalk, this is another great boost to immersion in this game but comes at the price of a few bugs here and there, despite this I'd still give it a solid 9 out of 10

The Soundtrack to this game is simply a masterpiece from the familiar Jeremy Soule (Guild Wars, Morrowind and Oblivion). From just strolling in the plains or fighting in one massive battle, the music is always keeping touch of what's happening on the screen. Jeremy Soule has truly outdone himself with these sweeping scores and easily gets a 10 out of 10 from me.

As for the game being worth the price tag, I couldn't recommend any game further more then Skyrim, no other game can come close to the 600 hours I spent (and still am spending) in this game and it could be a while before another does. 10 out of 10

The menus in this game do what there supposed to do and arrange the catergories of the game nicely, but can be a pain to go through if you have a full inventory, loading screens are also nicely thought out with facts about the lore and tips to enhance the experience, the downside being how long loading can be for consoles or PC's with many mods. 9 out of 10

The main story is interesting I didn't find it quiet as absorbing as Oblivion's but this is more then made up for in the other story lines, something Oblivion didn't for me. The Thieves guild quest line was outstanding and I really enjoyed it with it's many twists and turns, The Dark Brotherhood in similar fashion. The College of Winterhold was good but was far to short and left so many things unanswered, I was left wanting more, with The Companions seeming rather more bland then the rest but still a fun ride. 9 out of 10 here.

In my opinion Skyrim is the best Elder Scrolls game yet, improving on everything it's predecessors got wrong and putting them right.
While I doubt we will ever get a "Perfect Game" I believe TESV: Skyrim is the closest we may see for a while, I've loved my time in it and can't wait to see what Bethesda have to offer for TES6 so that's why I'm giving Skyrim a 10 out of 10

Most of the side missions and guild missions seemed generic to me. Dark Brotherhood used to be awesome (remember whodunnit from oblivion?) And it seems that the thieves guild has lost all honor. The addition of the civil war quests is a welcome but there is not much impact after you do them.

Despite all of this, skyrim is still a must buy. I just wished my character would have had a more substantial impact on the world

I'd give vanilla a 6 and modded skyrim a 9- hence why I leveled it out to an 8.

Vanilla Skyrim was a bit lacking in all categories. The stories (main, guilds, etc) were all shorter than I would have liked and expected, the environment was sparse (creatures/enemies etc), and the immersion wasn't up to par either (skyrim is supposed to be at war but there were no real military clashes).

Yes, there are some odd bugs in the game and the main story line at the end (the dragon one) is kind of uneventful, but since I can't give it a rating of 99.9% I will throw them a bone for coming out with DLC's.

The game play is just awesome, and as the game is open-world, the gameplay doesn't feel even a bit linear and has an unforgettable experience.

The game has leveling up systems but very well developed, and contains only the most important things, without unnecessary stuff, and is very simple to use it, when you level up simply increase points in your stamina, magicka, or health, and then pick up a perk and increase it, depending on what you want your character to be.

The weapons are just awesome, you have all you want from an RPG, swords, spells, potions, shields, bows, and many others.

The clothes and armors are as well made too, and you can make your weapons stronger and give them magical attributes by using the alchemy, forges and many others.

The story of the game is again well made, when the Dragons return, and are having the leader an evil one, this just makes the game better and more enjoyable.

The quests are well implemented, and are generated in a dynamic way so it doesn't feel that the story is forced.

In the game play the dragon fights are very well implemented, and you have great finishing moves for each kill, doesn't matter is a dragon, human, zombie, and so on.

The physics again are impressive, and feel realistic.

And most important feature of the experience, the shouts. They can be either learned from Greybeards, from walls and others.

The soundtrack? THE SOUNDTRACK?! It's pure awesomeness, the Dragonborn theme the best song I've ever heard in a game, same with the others, Jeremy Soule is a soundtrack genius! Can't say a bad thing about it.

The models and textures again are well made, high resolution an detailed, same with the map props, the lightning and shaders are good, despite on certain object or settings the shadows are looking weird.

So after all this, Skyrim is a masterpiece and really one of the best games ever, which met the highest expectations, and even surpassed them.

Skyrim is certainly a good game, but not perfect. The game has outstanding graphics and a strong lore, but some small glitches can block the player from continuing with the story.

Bethesda really did a good job in putting lots of small details into the game. But that only counts for some parts of the game. The first town the player enters is greatly detailed and the people living in this town, called Riverwood, react to their environment. But the further one goes into the wilderness of the province of Skyrim, the less detailed the town are.
The environment however is outstandingly good. The environment is very varied and not a single spot in the game, looks like another. The environment contains fast plains and dense forests, small peaceful creeks and wilde rivers. And in this environment many creatures can be found. Also there are many flowers to pick and a lot of animals to hunt.

Skyrim also has good gameplay which does not bore, even after many hours of gameplay. There are many decisions the player can make, which impacts the outcome of a quest. But sometimes the player runs into a glitch which most of the time means that the player has to load an old save and start over. Luckily this is not very common and the game runs mostly without any glitches. The combat mechanics are not into depth and magic seems a little overpowered when the player levels up. The amount of followers a player can have is limited to one and this follower sometimes blocks the player's path. Nevertheless the gameplay is good because of its new features. Like dual wielding weapons, sprinting, better mounts and so on.

The community of Skyrim is a very big community and also should be granted some credits in this review. Many modders enhance the game to an even better experience. They improve the already good graphics, increase the amount of quests and stories and enhance the environment of Skyrim. The vanilla game really is boosted by the great mods available.

In short the game is a very nice production of Bethesda and a game in the series which every Elder Scrolls fan should have played.

    + Good graphics
    + Breathtaking scenery's
    + Great attention to detail
    + Great freedom
    + Big modding community
    +/- Mediocre Gameplay
    - Glitches in quests

and one other the magic you dont have to be just a fighter or a magician you can be or both and you gain skill from doing so

The only downfall is how easy this game gets at later levels. I was able to finish mostly any enemy in a few hits and rarely received damage that threatened my character. Some missions also get repetitive, but there is enough selection of quests to where you can easily avoid them.

I'll start by saying I have over 50 hours logged with this game and will likely be up to 100 by the time I'm done. When you've sunk that much time into a game and don't really regret it, I'd say it's a good game that served its purpose, regardless of any current disillusionment.

So, Skyrim is the first Elder Scrolls game I've played, and it's about what I expected, on multiple levels.

I'd heard stories of the fantastic world-building and fantasy setting, and I'm not disappointed in that; I find the lore engaging, the holds fascinating, the rich sense of history and myth engrossing, and the particular epic end-of-the-world scenario introduced to be sufficiently badass as to overcome my boredom with being yet again the chosen one on a quest to save the universe.

I've seen some reviews impinge on the graphics, but frankly, if graphics stayed this good for the rest of my gaming life I think I'd be content. No, it's not absolutely photorealistic, but the vistas and dungeons are equally breathtaking and immersive, and the character models and items are sufficiently realistic that I rarely find myself stuck in the uncanny valley. (Then again, this is two years later, with all expansions, so the game when it came out might have looked much worse.)

Of course, I'm one of those people for whom graphics can slide so long as the gameplay is fun and the art design is interesting and boy, do I love the art design here. From goats all the way up to dragons, the animals and enemies just look amazing, hyper-real if you will (not actually realistic, but fantastically real). While I was yearning for much more variation after many hours of play, each piece of clothing or armor the game does have is stunningly detailed and well designed, and the weapons look and feel epic enough to make me want to reach into the game and pluck them out for my own use. Permeated with a Viking motif that I'm already partial to, the world's design just screeches out honor and strength and stark endurance, with danger lurking around every corner that brave men and women face triumphantly on a daily basis. I can, and have, just wandered for hours, taking in each new sight, drawn in to discover how it fits in and adds to this world of badass.

About halfway through, so I should start talking about what I didn't like, I guess. Well, at this point, my major complaint is this: there's so much to do, and yet there's ONLY TWO THINGS TO DO. Your interaction with the world is limited to pressing E, saying yes, and then going out to kill every damn thing at a location. There's barely any actual choices made in this game; people are either ready to tell you their life story, or ready to bash your skull in, on sight. There's no bargaining with or intimidating the bandits that happen across your path, there's no option to infiltrate a cabal of dark mages, there's barely any incentive to sneak through anywhere, and most importantly, there's virtually no character building whatsoever. Everything is just "go to X, kill all the Y, retrieve the Z."

Sure, that formula works for a while but then, when you start thinking, your immersion just breaks. You realize that, here is this massive, breathtakingly beautiful world filled with both natural wonders and the splendor of sapient creation and it's inhabited by cardboard cutouts of characters who tell you to go kill even more vaguely drawn creatures. There's some story imparted along the way, but it's easy to miss as you hack, slash, stab or burn your way across the world, and never actually gives the impression that it really matters.

Next, while the idea of doing something to get better at it is a laudable one it creates total apathy when it comes to making new characters. After I finish the game with my character now, I realized I have no real desire to go back and play a new one; after all, I can do everything the game has to offer with this one. There's pretty much nothing and no one that's closed off to you based on your choices, no new options that become available with a difference in race or focus; as others have noted, you can be the freaking Archmage and not know a single spell above Apprentice level, or the Harbinger of the Companions without ever lifting a weapon. Especially in single player, where you're the only thing with an actual brain around, classes are the only way for the world to actually understand the role you're trying to play.

And finally, to be blunt, the interface sucks balls. Major donkey balls. Even hotkeys on the PC version don't save it; there's not enough to make much difference. Using magic, especially alternating between it and Shouts, is simply annoying where it should be empowering. Swapping equipment or selling is a chore, as is crafting.

To wrap up: it's not at all a bad game. In fact, it's pretty damn good. But a lack of actual choice and character building, combined with the interface, mars what is otherwise an awesome experience.

I havn't touched many of the cosmetic mods, but this game is definantly worth the price. However I recommend getting it only if you have the free time. The main quest line is involving, and rather interesting. It takes about 10 or more hours to finish, and even that is so much more than most games that are released. However, Skyrim by no stretch of the imagination is only 10 hours long. It easily carries 300 hours of immersive, fun, and high quality gameplay. There is not only the main story to complete here. There are guild quests which pack the same storytelling qualities as the main quest line. There are a plethora of side quests, and misc quests to complete. And even after all that there is still the leveling of your character, and the deep crafting mechanics implemented into the game. The exploration in this game is also very deep. Having a large amount of interesting and varied environments to explore. Definitely a lot better than oblivion's very familiar looking dungeons, and areas. The variety, and detail in a game as huge as Skyrim really shows Bethesda's passion, and patience. The variety in weapons and armor however, to me, is dissatisfying. There is a good amount. However by the time you get your character into the higher levels, it feels as if there are very limited armor choices. The armors do look great but I wish there were more armors and weapons honestly. The weapon variety is definitely way greater than the armor variety, but still not as good as it can be. However, despite that minor complaint, overall Skyrim boasts a ridiculous amount of content in a single package. This game is well worth 60 dollars, considering that there are 7 hour games with no replay value sold at the same price.

So the game definitely shines in the content department. Boasting an easy 300 hours (even more if you add mods). But how does it do in the game play department? I'm happy to say the combat is the slickest it's ever been in an elder scrolls game. It feels great, and the combat is mostly fun. However, if you're playing a one handed character of some sort, the combat does start getting rather boring at higher stages of the game. Not only that, but when you are high level, you are god like. meaning during later stages of the game it is very difficult to get killed if playing on the default or lower difficulties. Despite this shortcoming the combat overall is fun, and satisfying. As for bugs, the game doesn't have many. Bethesda has done an excellent job of patching a lot the bugs that plagued the game in its early incarnation. At this stage in Skyrim's life cycle, it is the best performing game in Bethesda's catalog. Having minimal bugs, and glitches. But the inventory UI is awful on PC. The UI in general is awful on the PC. I needed a mod instantly in order to be able to use the inventory. The UI is honestly a rather significant part of a game like this. So I must say that it is really bad, and Bethesda should really have put a little more time into a PC version of the clearly console biased interface. Overall, the game feels great, and really does well in the gameplay mechanics. Something that previous elder scroll games didn't really achieve. But they really should have thought about that user interface.

Honestly, I can go on for hours about this game and its amazing features. That's literally how huge it is. Huge like my hand. It's a masterpiece. A marvel of modern gaming. some of my complaints (not many at all) are rather nitpicky. However, everything has its flaws, especially something with this kind of scope (The game not my hand). Anyway it feels like Ive been here for hours. I'm sure there's a lot I missed, but just go buy the game if you haven't played it already. It's pretty incredible.

magic in this game was dumbed down, you have different level of spells with presets, there is no magic crafting, that was awesome! now the magic is shallow and not fun, the spells go like this spray>projectile>explosive-aoe projectile>aoe this limits magic, they did NOT improve the system, big disapointment

    2-combat:

the combat itself and how it plays out, is great, really good smoth intuitive combat, weapons are balanced and hitting feels good, the combat is great however, stealth trivializes any fight, you can kill dragons in 1 hit

    3- Dragons

holy crap! dragons are awesome! the fights themselves are great, dragons are varied and scale with your level, and the soul system is great, dragons are not scripted and fights can happen everywhere, in the middle of a quest or when you're searching for supplies

    4-quest
here is the game's strongest point, the quest, varied, MANY of them, nuff said, its an elder scrolls game

The story about dragons was just plain awesome, the actual dragon fights were not though. I dread meeting a dragon in the wilderness, it's always the same thing over and over again and the fighting mechanic is quite broken, as dragons won't land if they don't have a piece of flat around, which makes killing them pretty much impossible. Once they are on the ground though they are easier to kill than a bear, which is quite pathetic.
The world of Skyrim on the other hand is a joy to be in, just walking down the slopes of Skyrim's mountains and taking in the amazing scenery while thinking about all those quests, dungeons and things to do there are in those flatlands under you is enough to give this game a ten out of ten. The lore is is in abundance here as always with many books to read and stories to be heard from locals. I guess the graphics don't even need mentioning, they are simply stunning if you've got the rig for it.
I would definitely recommend this game to anyone that's reading this, the only true problem the game has is ironically it's main feature the dragons. Lest also not forget the great modding community and mods that are traditionally available for an Elder Scrolls game.

Unfortunately, Skyrim trips and falls on its own (most probably, to make the cool-sounding deadline of 11-11-11) and just before it reaches perfection as the ultimate specimen of its genre, it self-destructs in a crucial aspect of game design: the interface and the peripheral components (inventory, journal, map, etc)... but that is not to say that Skyrim is anything but a truly majestic, epic RPG that will suck you right in its cosmos.
