    The major problem with The Consuming Shadow is that it’s a bubble-gum experience, especially compared to its peers. When it works, it’s only because of a new discovery. There’s something genuinely thrilling about finding a connection and jotting it down in your table of suspects, before setting off to the next hotspot. But when you enter another procedurally-generated dungeon, it’s a wearisome slog again.

    First of all, I am a sucker for Lovecraftian games, but there are tons of crappy games fro, the "niche". But when I saw that the game was made by Yahtzee, I immediately bought it.

    If you are a graphics junkie, definitely not your game. But for me, it was a very atmospheric and chlling experience, with far more depth than it seems at first. The flavor texts are nice, the feeling of solitude and isolation against the Elder gods is always there. The game is unfair, fitting for any Lovecraftian games, when you actually battle an immortal being, with power over your comprehension. Bit reminded me of Mansions of madness to be honest, which is my favorite board game ever.

    What I would highlight as weakness of the game is the combat system mainly. For me it was completely unnecessary, I would rather enjoy a jrpg like system. Not because I am fond of that style, but once I feel comfy in the foggy, creepy darkness of the game, I hate to break it with mad clicking and running. I would have made the battle more text based, less skill demanding, especially because the hit boxes, aiming, etc. are not that great.

    Also more items would be welcome, more type of encounters (sometimes I meet the same one twice in the same attempt)

    But anyway, it is a great game for its price, maybe a sequel would be interesting with more thought put it in. I would definitely buy that as well. If you are a fan of the Cthulhu Mythos, I definitely recommend this game.    … Expand
