Thaumistry is exactly what you want if you’re an Infocom fanboy like me. It has that thoughtful, funny writing Infocom spoiled us with, dozens of just-hard-enough puzzles, a cast of characters with enough personality to be interesting, an over-the-top set-piece climax, and all the refinements you expect from a modern adventure game. You can’t break it and make it unwinnable. You can’t die, with one obvious exception, blatantly telegraphed several turns before it happens. But this isn’t posturing, hipstery “art house” interactive fiction — it’s a hardcore, puzzles-first design. The heart of a 1980s text adventure throbs beneath all the 21st-century niceties.

Accessible, humorous text adventure with solid puzzles and pleasant comfort features. It was fun to play something showing the hand of the genre master Bob Bates.

As far as interactive fiction (IF) games go, Thaumistry: In Charm's Way doesn't disappoint: the plot is funny, the game has multiple endingsAs far as interactive fiction (IF) games go, Thaumistry: In Charm's Way doesn't disappoint: the plot is funny, the game has multiple endings and the game has lots of features that helps those that aren't normally comfortable with IF such as an automap, a tutorial, in-game help system, in-game hints system and a recap command that keeps track of your current objectives. This game is a labour of love by one of the veterans of the genre and I'd easily recommend it to fans of the genre and for those curious to know what IF is all about. Expand
