There are so many things to do in Terraria, like exploring the underground, fight enemies in the dungeon, building houses for the NPCs, fishing, etc. The bosses in Terraria are quite challenging, but when you have the proper equipment, it will be very easy to defeat them. You can play alone or play with friends in Terraria. Since the 1.3 update you can play with your Steam friends very easily. I recommend playing Terraria with a friend because fighting bosses will be easier. If you get the hang of it and would like some challenge, Terraria offers an Expert mode where the bosses will have more HP and do more damage. There are events that will happen randomly in Terraria where many monsters will try to attack you in your base which is very annoying most of the time. There are so many items in Terraria, and you can craft so many things, like furniture, weapons, armor, potions, etc. You can build your house with almost anything. There are many weapons in the game, not just swords and bows. There are guns, rocket launchers, boomerangs, yo-yos, magical staffs, spell books, lasers and more. The achievements in Terraria are fairly easy to complete. The Steam Cloud feature is very neat as I wouldn't be worried to lose my progress. Even though the graphics look outdated, the gameplay is truly amazing. I would really recommend Terraria. Expand

I can't say enough good things about this game. Old-school looks, randomly generated worlds, sandbox style go anywhere do anything game, it's like an SNES side scroller mixed with a RPG and minecraft. This game is just FUN and you can sink many hours into it. The only downside to this game is that it is no longer updated, because there is a lot more that could be added in.

There isn't much to say about this game. Its fun, I mean its Castlevania meets Minecraft. The combat is simple enough to master and difficult enough to have fun. You can find new weapons and armors and special items to help you navigate through the world. You can use the terrain to help you fight. Really fun and I come back to it all the time.

Offers a wonderful mix of action/adventure, dungeon-crawling, and sandbox gameplay that can be surprisingly deep despite the deceptively simple retro-2D graphical style.

With randomly-generated worlds that you could mould to however you like; this game has replay value that is only limited by your imagination!

I'll start off by saying that we let bygones be bygones as Terraria isn't a rip off of Minecraft anymore than Minecraft is a rip off of Infiniminer. It is unlike Minecraft in many regards in that it is more focused on platforming, has a combat system that simply isn't point and click... wait a minute... anyways, Terraria excels mainly in single player as the game becomes a bit... too easy with more than a two man team.
Unfortunately, every world has the same amount of resources; larger worlds have resources that are ridiculously farther apart. This makes creating a larger world for friends to play in a bit of a negative. Most sessions with my friends die whenever I happen to find something remotely useful. There are other ways why the multiplayer is flawed. The control over the server is minimal and the security protocol is a joke. Prior to Terraria dying, many servers were being bombarded by other players using hacked clients because many things that should be in control of the server (block placement radius, projectile a weapon uses) is instead handed over to the client, meaning anyone with an illegitimate client is able to, say, summon a stick of dynamite that destroys the entire world.
With no official modding support (cross your fingers though), many people will find that they have whizzed through the game once the pace picks up. The variety was tolerable pre-1.2 and was remedied greatly afterwards.
The monsters can vary not only in appearance but also in stats, which breaks the ice early game. The enemy types are also very nice, anything from a flying thing that does swooping attacks, to an archer who only advances if you are out of range, and a caster that teleports to new positions, I'd say that Redigit went fairly well in that regards.
The pacing is the game is a flaw. The beginning is very slow and dragged out, but the mid game is nice. I feel that 1.2 has forced the end game through a pipe as now the Hardmode bosses can spawn on their own volition.
All in all, despite the protocols being a mess and the observations of other programmers as to the inefficiency of the coding in general, Terraria isn't all that bad... after you've endured the first few hours on the first character. For people who have already (legitimately) made it to the end game, it seems they have a sense of nostalgia during the first few hours on a fresh start.

The 2-D, side scrolling, 16-bit SNES feel of the game is one of the awesome things about it...lots of nostalgia and comfort in this kind of setting for people in my age group. And anyone that says that Terraria is a Minecraft ripoff needs to really compare the two games with a bit more depth. Minecraft is baby town frolics in comparison... Now sure, are there things that are similar...yes...but a "clone" of Minecraft? Not even close. Terraria is way more in depth, with more options, more things to craft, do, explore, build, fight, etc. and just when you think that you have done it all or seen it all, you find something new, or they add content (which is free btw). Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone and everyone, but especially if you like open ended, sandbox type games or if you are looking for something to entertain you for days, weeks, or months...for the low price of $10, it is totally worth it. This is a guideline for how to properly review games. Many reviewers like to get a “feel” for a game, and arbitrarily give a game a score that they believe it deserves. This results in wildly different scores between different reviewers, and vastly different scores between similar games. This guideline addresses these problems and scores games fairly and consistently. This guideline also gives scores that are usually similar to the metacritic score.

The review score is based out of 10 points. There are no “half” or 0.5 increments. It is impossible to have a score above 10 or below 0. The review score will change as the game gets new dlc, drops in price, or if more secrets are found through the game increasing its appeal.

The scoring is split into 6 sections. The first five sections can add a possible 2 points to the final score. The first 5 sections are Single Player/Multi Player, Gameplay, Visuals/Story, Accessibility/Longevity, and Pricing.

Notice that 3 of these sections have two parts. These particular sections will be scored based on the stronger part of the game of the two. For example, if a game has a lousy single player campaign, but an excellent multiplayer component, that section will be based solely on the multiplayer as if the single player did not exist. This allows games to be based on their own merits, as many unnecessary features are shoehorned into video games by publishers to reach a “feature quota”. Games that excel in both areas of a section don’t receive should be noted in the written review, but cannot increase the score past 2 in that section. However, it can be taken into account in the final section

The final section can add 1, add 0, or subtract 1 to the final score. This final section is the “wildcard” section. This section is for how the reviewer “feels” about the game, but limits this only to this section, rather than the entire 10 point review. This section can include any positive or negative point that was not covered in the previous 5 sections.

You first start by customizing your character with thousands of different possibilities. You could have weeks of playtime and you would still have much, much more things to explore. The game is focused around you crafting items to advance in the game, so you can battle harder enemies, build better things, and explore new areas that help you progress. You will always have a goal and spend hours trying to reach that goal. The graphics are Super Nintendo style and fit perfectly in a game like this. The music will get stuck in your head whenever you hear it, and you can't help but tap your foot to some tunes. It has many game references to other games and easter eggs that'll make you remember. I have played over 100 hours of this game and I can say that is is perfect. It gives hours upon hours of game play although its not for everyone. Although yes you build and mine like minecraft its nothing like it. It has RPG elements with bosses and everything. It can start out a little slow but it gets much more fun later on.Its a $10 master piece maybe not for everyone but I say at least try it

I label this game as a phenomenal achievement. Single player will allow you to experience a very challenging adventure spilling over with discovery, mystery, struggle, and triumph, while multiplayer can serve as a surprisingly chaotic and endless source of banter as you and your friends struggle against the comic hazards of the world. Terraria, perhaps now more than ever, is a must have game as the development team have returned to work on releasing content updates. The game currently in version 1.2.2 is deep, rewarding, and brimming with variety, something that Terraria is well renowned for. Terraria stands to only become a better experience as successive patches are released, and one can expect only the best from Redigit and the Re-Logic staff, both now and on future developments such as the rumored sequel to Terraria, Terraria 2.

I strongly feel that Red and the staff are very deserving of a full mark score of 10 on their masterful achievement that continues to impress me to this day without exception, years after first purchase.

All of the bosses and side-events combined give you a very long total of playtime before you really reach what one could consider "end-game", and what can be considered an "end-game" status is repeatedly changed, again and again. The game's a bit two-dimensional (no pun intended) in terms of progression after you enter "Hardmode" as you'll likely get killed countless times just trying to gather the ores to make the armour that you need to actually be able to progress. It gets boring at the start of the switchover but once you get up to at least second-tier hardmode ore gear, you're set. Basically, you're in for hours and hours of gameplay. Part grinding, part boss murdering, part dying. Expand

Hey-ho, what a gem this game is! Incredibly addictive Minecraft-style gameplay, without being a Minecraft-ripoff. Graphics are great, sound effects are great, music is great. And so rich in content, with the developer still adding to it as of this date.

The only thing it shares with Minecraft is... mining and crafting, but the similarity stops there.

There are untold hordes of monsters, animals, insects, spiders, mythical enemies, environments, materials, bosses (that are a real challenge), and so much more which put it far above anything ending in "-craft". There is an entire wiki devoted to the game, and a little poking around will reveal a ton of possibilities for what can be done in the game, not to mention add-ons, mods, and tools / utilities.

Plus, it has been updated many times with new content and activities, making it a continually replayable game to find out what else you can do!

Others say it is a steal at its regular $10 price, but it is a no-brainer on Steam Sale for $2.50. I have well over 500+ hours, almost 600, in the game and have it on every computer I own. It is just that amazing a game. The keyboard / mouse combo may take a little getting used to if you use controllers, but once you got it, it makes perfect sense.

This game is a rare stand-out gem in today's predictable, recycled game releases of 3D shooters painted grey and brown - something challenging and genuinely fun!

It is a two dimensional boss fighting, dungeon exploring, sandbox game that focuses on your character trying to rid of evil in your land (No story, you make your own) and you start off with low quality gear and a guide who helps you will crafting. Like "Minecraft" you have to build a house before the sun sets and when night comes, creatures come to eat you. There are zombies, slimes (which appear at day time as well) and flying eyes. The crafting is more simplified than "Minecraft" as it does not require some weird grid system to make tools, which I find better. The mining is a bit slow , which is disappointing, but when you get the good stuff, it will improve. The fighting is based on statistics on your weapons and are more explained than "Minecraft" in ENGLISH, not gibberish bullocks. The animations are a bit stupid but charming. You swing your tools like a three year old child explaining what a windmill does. The bosses are my favourite feature in this game. They are awesomely terrifying and need certain tactics to defeat them. There is different biomes and them have certain mobs in them. I shall say no more but to tell you to get this game. It is very cheap and you will get that money back and more! Expand

In a time where thousands of mediocre and uninspired games seem to appear daily, Terraria is a true gem. Admittedly, while the pixel art graphics should scare off the majority of "why no tutorial me bro?" types, this game still isn't for everyone and it certainly does not hand-hold you. The charm comes from playing with friends but strangely doesn't require every session be a multi-player experience in order to be satisfying.

Having come a long way in a few years, development wise it can now safely be considered 'done', but just when you're left itching for more, you can also download lovingly crafted adventure worlds (Zelda themed as an example) which somehow keep the exploration fresh while forcing you to relinquish your pickaxe for some good old fashioned brain work.

Excitement and progression is a three faceted affair of exploration, crafting, and building. Dig straight down until you're repeatedly killed by the increasingly difficult enemies, making you naturally want to craft a better set of armor before trying again. Explore so far across the surface of your strange new world only to die in an accidental fall, motivates you to build a new home in the far away jungle so you won't need to make the trek yet again after your next accidental demise.

Grab it on sale so you can purchase a few copies for friends and hop on Skype with them, if the visuals didn't already put you off you're likely not to regret it. Oh, and don't forget to turn off that in-game music whilst tossing on a set of your own tunes. Be it Classical, Gangster Rap, Indie Rock, or Country Western, you're going to be here awhile.

The game offers a ton of content and has given me far more enjoyment than games I paid $30 or $60
    for.

Obviously this game will not appeal to everyone, like FPS games and Minecraft don't appeal to others. But as far as my take on this game goes, I love it. It's awesome. I have never encountered any game breaking bugs and have spent over 200 hours on it. The building possibilities are virtually limitless despite being 2D and the fighting against bosses and other monsters is a lot of fun. When the game was released compared to how it is now (V. 1.0 and V. 1.2.4 as of this review) is totally different. For those that haven't played Terraria since then I highly recommend you at least try again. The graphics have totally been revamped and the content is awesome. There is quite literally 1000's of items and each game can take up to 50-100 hours to fully complete the game, allowing an insane amount of game play. The building aspect is awesome in this game too... time consuming but still can produce an awesome result.

Overall, I'd say Terraria had a 9.0 prior to 1.2, but as of 1.2 and the latter updates, I give it 10/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For anybody saying it's "Just minecraft but in 2d" is basically wrong. it took an idea from it, sure, but that doesn't make it a ripoff. if i were to use the same logic, all first person shooters would be a ripoff from Wolfenstein.
Second off, the content. Oh boy, i've seen a lot of negatives on that subject. "there's barely any monsters" that is, if you only count the monsters you'll see in your first day and night. "there's nothing interesting" okay, i'll admit, the beginning is never interesting for me either, but talk content and you're wrong. Back to seeing as many people say it's a "2d minecraft ripoff", minecraft may have 3d, but Terraria outclasses it by monsters, bosses, weapons, biomes and even features a progression-like activation towards activating "hardmode", wich gives acces to new features, monsters and more.
lastly, the slow pace. this is when people just start saying things because they're not far enough in the game. all beggining is slow, so is terraria's. but giving 0's for that plain reason is just... dumb. there are faster tools to help, but they just base themselves on what they start with: the worst weapon, pickaxe and axe. because it's begging, you shouldn't expect some form of wonder to give you the best items immediately. as for now, an 8 is enough, the game has flaws (because nothing can be perfect) and i feel like it's worthy enough to deserve it. played many hours, yet even more to come.

Ok, so Terraria was "inspired" by Minecraft and that's ok. But, the thing that made Minecraft so unique was what that you could build and be creative. Build grand structures or working contraptions with red stone. Terraria falls a little flat in that aspect in my opinion. Sticking to 2 dimensions means some harsh limits to what you can do creatively. Also, I think this game would have been much better if the graphics resolutions were increased. The sprites of characters, enemies and objects are so small and blocky that something like adding a new pair of boots to your character alters it's sprite by 2 pixels. There are countless versions of all types of building blocks, crafting stations and furniture in this game yet the resolution is so bad that they all tend to blend together after awhile and only the color differences really stand out.
Those complaints aside, the RPG aspect of the game is brilliant. Finding loot in jars and chests makes exploration more fun and necessary. Adding little random bonuses to crafted weapons is a nice touch as well, making every weapon you create a little more unique. NPCs will come to your village if you build housing for them and some of them have some great, game altering abilities or loot. The number of things you can craft is astounding, even if most of them are merely cosmetic differences. Oh, and the boss battles, some a little too easy, are a fun addition to the genre and give it more of that 80s side-scrolling retro feel.
Despite the obvious inspiration from Minecraft, Terraria is a fun game to play a little and mess around, but due to the limitations with creativity I can't see it being as addictive or playing it as religiously as Minecraft.

Now, many people like to say how Terraria is just a 2D version of it's 3D brother Minecraft, however this is quite wrong, when's the last time you've seen a flying eye in Minecraft without mods? And unlike Minecraft, with the new 1.3 update there is now steam support, so it makes it even easier to play with your friends than Minecraft, with Minecraft you would need to buy a server or use hamatchi, but with Terraria you can host a server and invite anyone from your steam friends list that has the game. In my opinion Terraria is a game that should be played with friends, when the game is played by yourself the game can get boring, causing you to stop playing. One thing that I will have to say about the game is that the beginning is VERY tedious, if you're just starting out you have to grind for quite some time until you get enough ores to start taking down bosses, but once you take down one boss, you start going on a roll... That is until you get to hardmode, where the process restarts by needing to grind for Cobaltpalidium, Mythrilorcalcum, and adamantitetitanium. The only way to avoid grinding for these ores is to fish for crates, which again can be very tedious. After killing the 'final' boss, it leaves you with that feeling of "What now?" and this causes a lot of players to just drop the game after they kill a certain boss. I highly recommend this game to any casualmature players, competitive players may like the pvp area of the game, and if it goes on sale I would 100% recommend for anyone to pick it up just to try it. when it goes on sale you could buy about 13 copies of the game for the price of one Minecraft copy. Have fun playing everyone! Expand

I see this is Minecraft with one less dimension. Micecraft sucks quite a huge amount so why should I stick to an inferior copy? Well... Because it's glorious platforming and the fact you actually are given tasks to move on with your construction and ore gathering, The game grows on you because of equipment. You start crappy wielding wood swords and building wood houses. Dozens of hours in after restless exploration I have Adamantine Blade and my bricks are made of copper. You realize that overworld platforming won't yield the results you aimed for. So it's time to go underground.

This is a mining title; therefore I shall mine, excavate.

And, oh my, does this game have a lot of memorable ones. For the sake of not spoiling anything, I won't say any of them, but most of them are completely unique, and even those that aren't, still have at least something new and fresh to bring. But one of the major gripes I have with the game, is how much the progression gets tied to the bosses, especially in Hardmode. A few other activities would've been greatly appreciated. Terraria does something I haven't seen a game do, and that is the prospect of characters and worlds being two different things. What I mean by that, is that when you create a world, any of your characters can visit it. Yes, this does mean your high-levelled character can give your three-minute-old one an absolutely over-powered sword, but seeming as the player has already acquired the item, it does little to no harm. The items are all incredibly unique, and I was acquiring them by the bushel, items such as the Umbrella, or the Money Through. There is usually a wacky event happening for you to partake in. Another major part of the game is house-building. While making a house early-game is quite a fun task, later it becomes laborious work, and houses that fit the criteria always have a chance to not work at all. Graphically, the game looks great. Every locale, NPC and block is well-made, and I enjoy the simplistic style. The music in the game is also a high note, no pun intended. From the main theme, to the ominous one of the Corruption, each track fits where you are well, and they transition oh-so perfectly. Mods are another giant factor of Terraria and there's no shortage of them. Small, yet almost compulsory ones, such as the Boss Checklist are just as great as massive, content-rich expansions that mods like Thorium give you. Co-op is just as you'd think it'd be, and it is quite enjoyable. Overall, Terraria is a very enjoyable game. Except for the second half not being as enjoyable as the first, and a couple other redundant features that I dislike, the game is a flawless 2D action-adventure game, with heavy RPG elements. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Personally one of the best thousand hours of my life.

To be honest i didn't expect to be sucked in as I was whenever I began playing this game back in I wanna say 2013-2014 on Xbox 360 (I didn't own a PC at the time). The 1.2 update was just released for the console as well so I had a huge amount of content to explore to my hearts content. Then a year of my life went by and I was still playing the game. Eventually of course I did buy the game for PC and have currently put over 1200 hours of time on it. Anyways, onto the actual review!

The game itself is really fun! The game puts you into an empty world with only one NPC, the Guide. It expects you to learn most things in the game on your own, including how to fight bosses and constructing an arena for them. Terraria has an absolute slew of weapons and armor for you to don and experiment with, with four (five if you count Throwing) individual damage types for each weapon. Every weapon has a different look to them, although that's not really apparent in the first couple of hours of the game. Once you kill the first boss though the weapons get extremely creative with their looks and effects, incluidng a sword that shoots beams that you can find ANYWHERE!

As for the gameplay itself it's simple, but in this case simple is all you really need. You click with the left mouse button to attack and place blocks. Unlike Minecraft though this game has a lot more elements than just clicking with a weapon in your hand. Guns, Bows, Bombs, Swords, Spears, Axes, you name it. There are even magical weapons that use up mana! There are so many different combinations of weapons and armor that change your experience in different ways whenever fighting or even exploring the underground or surface world!

This game is also filled to the brim with mobs (Over 300 of them) and different types of bosses that all have their own different attacks and drops! They become even harder with the somewhat recent Expert Mode, but with that difficulty comes with new rewards in the form of Treasure Bags, with each boss having a unique item to them and them alone.

While this game is really good...there are some issues involving the game. You're gonna have a Wiki open for the game a lot due to the amount of items that can be crafted in this game and in order to get all the really good stuff you'll have to do so much grinding, which is another issue in this game. One of my own nitpicks is the fact that as soon as you enter Hardmode (When you kill the Wall of Flesh) the game makes a HUGE difficulty jump. Yes, it's called Hardmode for a reason but you'd think the game would give you a chance before murdering you on the spot with Unicorns and Pixies in the Hallowed Biome and Tetra Elementals and Big Bats underground.

All in all I'd highly recommend this game, even with some of the issues I have with it. When you finish the game for the first time (after killing the Moon Lord) I'd recommend you try some mods for the game, mainly the Thorium Mod which is basically a large free DLC for the game. Thanks for reading!

A lot of games tried to copy Minecraft – or at least participate from its' success. But this two-dimensional take on the well known formula is the only game that is able to step out of the shadow of the indie phenomenon that inspired it. It leads you into a unique world full of creative magic.
