  • Summary: As President Rayne, lead Sordland into ruin or repair during your first term in this text-based role-playing game. Navigate a political drama driven by conversations with your cabinet members and other significant figures. Beware or embrace corruption; shirk or uphold ideals. How will you lead?

A riveting politico-economic drama that seamlessly turns into a journey of self-knowledge. Political Sim games fans, Choose-Your-Own-Adventure enthusiasts, as well as those who crave strong narratives, should definitely check it out.

This is a brilliant political strategy game, very well written and full of gut-wrenching decisions. Only you will decide the fate of the Republic - and its embattled president.

Suzerain is unlike most things you can play that’s out right now. The choose your own adventure stylings are fascinating, with rabbit trail upon rabbit trail to investigate. Because of this, you’ll be able to play it again and again, and because they do such a great job with the setting and people you’re going to want to. While some sections can be long in tooth, they only make me appreciate what Suzerain is doing, creating a riveting narrative of what it’s like to be President.

Suzerain is an interesting game with some serious quality behind it. Those who want more machinations in their strategy games, particularly when tied to some characters with genuine depth, will find a lot to love.

Suzerain is a compelling political drama/simulation and if you have the patience for great walls of text and often punishing decision-making, this is the game for you.

Suzerain is basically West Wing in game form, which is as awesome as it sounds. A game more akin to 80 Days than Civilization, Suzerain is a surprisingly compelling narrative that allows players to run a country with their own ideas about how things should be done to see if they’re right. I got to test out my theory of crime being a symptom of failings in other areas, pushing education and healthcare to the forefront; I was happy to see crime decrease as a response to increased access to necessary services. Suzerain may not seem exciting upon first glance due to its limited mechanics, but within minutes you’ll be hooked on Sordland’s history with a desire to shape its future. If you think you can run a country, prove it — grab Suzerain today.
  7. Suzerain is not a game with action dynamism. You mostly encounter text walls and you read it all the time. Suzerain is a game that can be developed with updates and attracts strategy lovers like me.

It's hard to stop playing, as there's always another cabinet meeting or policy proposal to make decisions on. It feels like your choices really matter, and the direction you take Sordland in is almost entirely up to you. Especially at its price point, this game is 100% worth it. I can't wait to see what the developers come up with next, and I look forward to jumping into a second playthrough with President Rayne! Expand

The motivationalSo, let me preface by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Atypically well written, immersive, and consequential. The motivational complexities are a true strength, and that is of the utmost importance in a political game. Frankly, Suzerain should have been a 10. What's preventing that? 2 things, primarily.

Although your choices do matter, the range of these choices is illusory. Meaning, mechanically it's much closer to a visual novel than a real political game. For example, I wanted to do things to tweak the economy throughout, but had to wait for the opportunity in a linear fashion. My cabinet had to present options, and only then This applies to basically everything in the game.

Secondly... the ENDING. Not only was it anticlimactic, but I felt the game was only half way done. You finish a total of one term no matter what happens. There should really be at least two terms, especially considering all the work you put into minor changes for your country, only to barely or never see these changes in true effect. Many options are presented as long term solutions, but what's the point of choosing anything long term when it's a short-term game?

It's still worth playing, I actually highly recommend because it's strengths are exceptional. And I suppose it speaks for the game when you only want more content when it's over. But not at the price of feeling incomplete.
