I was in the beta for Battlefront I and took a pass on it because I found it to be a bit too repetitive and not that much fun...man I really wish I did the same for this. Starfighter Assault isn't much better as ships either handle like an drunk elephant or a coked up slippery dolphin. Ugh...definitely pass on this game. Expand

Let me preface this by saying that I have played this game for 30 hours now, so I do know what I am talking about.

This game is flawed on multiple levels and any objective person who would be able to see that.

    Cons:
    - Progression in this game is absolutely terrible. Once you have completed all the challenges and used up the initial inflow of credits, it becomes a terrible grind to unlock characters or get crates.
    - Maps are imbalanced and usually favors one side.
    - Farming (by either killing AIs or AFK farming) is rampant. AI farming can also have a snowball effect.
    - Servers are really bad. The lag and rubber-banding makes MP a terrible experience. Some game modes are pretty much unplayable.
    - The mechanics of the game still works against you. You should be able to unlock almost every card with about 100ish hour of gameplay. Right now after 30 hours, I hardly have 10% of the cards and its just downhill from here.
    -

    Pros:
    1. The game looks beautiful. The maps are diverse and each map gives you a different feel.
    2. The heroes are a manageable threat. They will kill you if you try to go 1v1 with them but are easily countered with a small group.

I don't even know where to start with this garbage pile, but let's just dive right in shall we?

Remember when you could buy a game and it'd be a finished product? EA expects you to drop 80+ dollars on this game that can't even function properly. With only a week and a half under its belt, Battlefront II's servers are constantly plagued by rubber banding and server lag. It makes it literally unplayable for their own buyers. The overbearing microtransactions are gone for the moment, but this is only because Disney forced EA to pull them and redesign them. However it JUST slipped their minds that with the microtransactions gone, the only way to progress and level up your character is to farm credits bit by bit in a painfully slow grind via the mindless, boring arcade or the woefully unbalanced multiplayer.

Now let me make this clear; Battlefront I ran off pure cheese and Battlefront II is no different. I understand this and accept this. I managed to eke out a reasonable amount of fun from the first game when I adapted to the inane madness that is its multiplayer. But Battlefront II gives you no time at all to do this. Since the real life money loot box system got pulled, EA also removed the credit reward based on match performance. It's now tied to time spent in the match. You'll be lucky to have a match last longer than 7 or 8 minutes because each mode feels deliberately designed to be short and generally unsatisfying. There are several maps to play on but there is no rhyme or reason as to which ones are selected, leading to some maps being overplayed and some barely at all. 33 hours in and I've played on Hoth twice, but Naboo probably 10+ times via Galactic Assault.

The single point in this review goes towards the hero balance. DICE actually managed to pull this part off quite nicely; Heroes are fair, balanced and require skill. Careful application of abilities is tantamount to survival and performing well. No longer are heroes random god pickups that allow players to gain an unfair advantage and go on a rampage against the enemy team. It's entirely possible to still do this but it's also entirely possible for a random stormtrooper to put you down from a few well placed shots. Once again I find myself writing that Heroes vs Villains is the only game mode I genuinely enjoyed. Oh, and NO, I am not giving it extra points for the graphics and sound design. Battlefront 1 already had that down, and it's not like making a game look and sound amazing with the Frostbite engine is something fresh and new, it's expected by now. Unfortunately for all of us shiny, fancy graphics doesn't make for a good game.

There is a campaign but does that even deserve writing? It's your average six hours long, head shot simulator shooting gallery and the story is complete garbage. To spare you the details if you absolutely insist on playing it, if you were hoping for a chance to fight for the Empire and see some explanation as to what happened between episodes 6 and 7, fat chance. All it does is confuse things even more and ham-fist a corny, completely obvious and uninteresting, nonsensical plot into your face at every given opportunity. And yes, this IS canon because Disney. Anybody else wish Legends was still canon? I know I do.

Overall, a laughable excuse for a game of this caliber. I hold little hope that DICE, an actually talented and well oiled machine that CAN make great games, will manage to work past EA's negligence and incompetence to patch the stupid bugs, server lag and other problems for a salvageable experience. Save yourself the trouble of suffering with the rest of us and wait, or go play the original Battlefront II.

Battlefront 2 is a lot like the first Battlefront 2 that came out over ten years ago, except with half the content, a mediocre campaign, and microtransactions lurking behind every corner. The first battlefront 2 is so many leagues better than this game that I will mostly be comparing it to its predecessor instead, Battlefront EA, which still manages to be better.

    -Campaign The campaign
Battlefront 2 is a lot like the first Battlefront 2 that came out over ten years ago, except with half the content, a mediocre campaign, and microtransactions lurking behind every corner. The first battlefront 2 is so many leagues better than this game that I will mostly be comparing it to its predecessor instead, Battlefront EA, which still manages to be better.

    -Campaign
The campaign takes you from cutscene to cutscene as you play as, well, a variety of characters actually. Each mission is constructed as an extremely linear arcade shooter that takes you less than half an hour to complete, and after a pitiful five hours of gameplay, the campaign is finished with one of the most uninteresting cliffhangers I've ever witnessed. Some of the characters (not really the main one) are surprisingly well developed, however the intermission as you play as "hero" characters inbetween feels completely pointless. It would be much better if they each had individual short stories instead of being intertwined with the main campaign. There's also no campaign for the Clone Wars or First Order. I believed the game would make you sympathize with the Empire, as did BF 2, but it instead somehow portrays them even worse than in the movie. The graphics are nice though.

    Multiplayer
Multiplayer is an absolute lag-fest, featuring the worst latency I've ever seen in my life for any game. This is a server-wide issue and has nothing to do with an individual's internet, meaning everyone is lagging, not just you. This makes multiplayer modes like Starfighter assault virtually unplayable. Long matchmaking times for modes like Heroes vs Villains make it feel like the game is already dying, as finding a single match usually takes upwards of 5 minutes. Hero, special trooper, and vehicle unlocks now depend on how many points you accumulate throughout the match, meaning that if you're a bad player, good luck ever getting your hands on Luke Skywalker. There can also be multiple heroes on the battlefield, and each hero is extremely underpowered compared to how they were in BF EA. You also need to unlock certain heroes with credits before you can have the privilege of playing as them. EA explained this as "a sense of accomplishment", but if anyone actually believes that, I have a bridge to sell you. The actual (and blatantly obvious reason) for this is because credits can also be used to buy loot crates, so this encourages you to spend your credits on the stupid hero unlocks, and then buy loot crates with real money, and I'm astonished people actually continue to believe EA's idiotic excuse for it. The scoreboard is generally pointless, as the top players usually fly around and shoot down AI ships while contributing nothing to the team, and someone who actually caries the team and is on point throughout the entire game gets nothing. For example, the "blowing up disrupters" objective gives you 500 points, but only if you are standing near it when it explodes. If you hold the objective for 3 whole minutes buy yourself and prevent the enemy team from taking it but you get killed the second before it explodes, you get absolutely nothing. However, if you're running around the map without helping your team and you happen to touch the point right as it gets captured, you receive all the points. Credit rewards at the end of the map aren't based on how well you did, but how long you played and how long the match lasted. The star card system also enforces the pay-to-win archetype in which whoever is willing to spend the most money gets the greatest advantage. Modes like Heroes vs Villains are less fun, and character customization has been ripped from the game. Also, getting shot through walls is a very common occurrence, maybe there will be a dlc for it.

    Arcade
You can now create custom matches to play on against ai, just like instant action in BF 2! Except it's extremely disappointing and doesn't have half of the options. Arcade in BF 2 EA is definitely better than BF EA however, but that's like saying a musty sock smells better than a pile of crap. I still managed to squeeze about 4-5 good hours out of it before I never wanted to play it again, unlike the good 100+ I got out of the good BF 2 10 years ago.

All in all, Battlefront 2 is like taking a trip back to your youth and playing with your favorite childhood toy, except this is a cheap knockoff brand that keeps prompting you to spend more money. It's not actually a 0 out of 10, I give it that score because microtransactions in multiplayer for a 60 dollar game are unacceptable. Excluding microtransactions, it's probably a close 5. It's a painfully average shooter with the star wars label tacked onto it, making that its single redeeming quality. So yes, I strongly encourage you to by Battlefront 2. The 2005 version, I mean.

Singleplayer campaign is little bit too short but otherwise it's fun to play with interesting new characters. Looking forward to new FREE maps coming in next months. #HatersGonnaHate

Please, don't buy this game. it turns a beloved franchised into a dirty casino. You have to spend a lot of cash to have access to the best characters and items. Microtransactions doesn't belong to PC gaming. Prices have already increased and we don't care if you compare gaming entertainment to something else. If I spend 50+ or more money in game, it must contain everything. Very sad that key characters aren't unlocked in the beginning.

Of course, this game is a good quality but, progress scheme based on loot boxes, no matter whether you can purchase them for real money or credits obtainable from a game. This makes this game very disapointing by slowing down progress dependant on crafting material found ONLY in lootboxes.

4- only 4 hours of single player story with the most cliche situations you could face.

5- videos from cutscenes looks horrible and stutter all the way. It's 2017 but my octacore machine with a GTX 1080 Ti can't play what seems to be less than 720p quality videos without stuttering.

6- HDR is totally broken. Game forces HDR mode and everything looks like garbage. After patches, still HDR cannot be disabled... because not a single developer considers a switch something cool.. let's just CRASH all the PCs that are not compatible with whatever HDR method this game is trying to impose.
