ItSquare Heroes is a twin stick arena shooter that looks like Worms but in real-time. I played this game at PAX Aus local multi-player. It reminded me of the glorious local multiplayer days of Goldeneye but instead of split screen it has a camera in 3D space that zooms accordingly to fit all players in.
At the beginning of each level you select your loadout but when you start you only start with a melee weapon equipped by your character. At first you can only select the one loadout as you have to earn XP to level up and unlock weapons – there are 30 levels each of which unlocks a weapon. Weapons include grenade launcher, flame thrower proximity mines and chicken. When you start the level after selecting your loadout you have to unlock the weapons you selected by collecting coins which you get from killing harmless critters that roam the level – not unlike a MOBA. There a few game modes: Deathmatch, Gnome Hunt, Team Deathmatch, Team Gnome Hunt and Survival. Games can either be timed or first to x kills or gnomes. Gnome Hunt is similar to capture the flag but instead of carrying the Gnome “Flag” back to base you camp by it to capture it. In survival you just have one life and have to outlast the aliens – all of which can attack you unlike in the other modes. Only the last level in the Single Player Tournament is a survival match – the others are pre-sets of the other modes. There are a number of achievements each of which unlocks a hat you can equip your character with adding perks. For example you can unlock the Robin Hood cap by killing someone in a round with the crossbow and harpoon. I like how the achievements are not just grinding, e.g. kill 100 enemies, each has a unique requirement.
The online multiplayer is really easy to create and join games however there are not enough online players yet so finding games with a low ping unless you set it up with a friend can take a while - hopefully this will change!
The final level boss fight seems impossible and there are achievements each of which unlocks a hat that when you equip gives your character perks. However I have not been able to beat the Alien King yet which I think unlocks the goggles as it says they are unlocked by the King Slayer Achievement.
Overall a very _fun_ game at the right price easy to pick-up and play but with a high skill depth too which combined with XP, levelling and achievements keeps me coming back for more!… Expand
