Sonic Origins

In all Sonic Origins is a good way to experience the original four Sonic the Hedgehog outings, but it isn't without its issues, namely the locked content and the occasional glitch. This reviewer recommends Origins to anyone that’s a fan of classic platformers, or is a fan of collections that include never before seen art of the Blue Blur and his friends and foes from the Genesis/CD era!

Sonic Origins offers the best way to experience these classics on PC through Retro Engine ports including a new one for Sonic 3 & Knuckles with bonus museum content and cut-scenes, but Sega needs to fix the filtering issue that makes this look blurry and also address some of the bugs that hold this back from being as good as it should be. Having recently been verified on Steam Deck by Valve, Sonic Origins is also excellent on Valve's new handheld system where I played it for review alongside the Switch version.

Sonic Origins is an ideal package for newer fans to dive into to learn more about the franchise’s beginnings. Sadly, a myriad of odd design choices and bizarre technical hiccups personally brought down this package more than a few notches. Of course, I could have been more vexed by these issues than the average fan, so I may be an outlier. Still, if you’re a dedicated classic Sonic fan, you may want to purchase this package during a sale or investigate whether the console versions fare any better.

On one hand there are 4 great games in Sonic Origins, all are well cherished by Sonic fans, and are games that are considered some of the best in the Sonic franchise. Players might not even notice some of the glitches if they have never played Sonic, some long-time veterans might not even encounter them, but then on the other hand, these games, which have been out on the market for 25 years or more, cost a premium price with so many bugs and glitches present. Anniversary mode, Story mode and Mission mode will certainly be a refreshing change of pace for those that have completed these games dozens of times and it's fun while it lasts, but the package falls short by not including more than previous collections.

Sonic's beloved, 2D adventures return with a fresh coat of HD paint. However, this otherwise enjoyable collection of Genesis-era games is marred by a few technical issues.

Sonic Origins works magic with Anniversary Mode, allowing you to play four classic Sonic games in widescreen. However, the speed bumps, ranging from features moved to DLC and a lack of great content, bring the fun to a crawl.

Although it is a nice homage to the first adventures of the hedgehog, Sonic Origins could have deserved a better finish. Overall, this compilation is correct, but the options offered are not enough to make up for certain shortcomings. Despite a really successful dressing with its cartoons and colorful interface, SEGA's game constantly oscillates between good and bad. We're having a good time, but for Sonic's 30th anniversary, we were right to expect more games and surprises. Especially at a price of forty euros.

A nice offer for fans, whether they are fans from the very beginning or young newcomers who have gotten to know the blue-haired hedgehog through recent Hollywood films. The price tag of around forty euros is hefty, but you get four excellent retro games in return.

Sonic is the hero of my childhood! I grew up with the 2D platformers and my Mega Drive with games is now well protected in a glass cabinet in the living room. Accordingly, I approached Sonic Origins with hope. Sega would have had the chance to interest younger players and offer old fans a little added value. But they missed it cleanly. For new players, 40 euros for four old games will be too much. At the same time, the collection offers almost nothing new for fans. Sure, the scans of the old manuals and developer sketches are nice, but they are nothing more than some fluff on top. The versions of the games still play fantastically, but they are only warmed up and nothing here is original from the Mega Drive. They normally work good on PC, but there are player reports on steam of a few technical issues. This is simply unworthy of these classics of gaming history.
