I played sonic a lot as a kid on game gear, had kids, one loves sonic, tried the most modern games and felt they were lacking. This was very welcome change from the others I tried recently (forces) and would suggest anyone to give it a shot

Skilled players are rewarded with speed and the islands are fun to move around in.
The cyberspace levels were the only real let down in that they used visuals that are stale and the controls were a lot worse feeling than the open zone. They were still fun to play, but they felt like they could have been a lot better. Since they were such a back seat part of this game it wasn't a hugely negative impact on the whole experience though.
Overall, I would recommend this to any Sonic fan, and really anyone who is even a little interested in Sonic.

The gameplay loop is very solid, the controls are very smooth on the ground, but still need a bit of work in the air. Sonic is very inconsistent on when you try to fling him off a ledge. He may fly into the horizon, or stick to the ground like a magnet. Cyberspace flows well in the gameplay loop, but the reused assets and level design from previous games with unchangeable poor control makes these levels the weakest part of the game. The OST goes hard, piano in the overworld, EDM in Cyberspace, which is really good(and I don’t usually care for EDM), and insane vocal tracks in boss battles. While the ending could’ve used a bit more time, the story is one of the best in the series, and all of the voice actors bring Ian Flynn’s masterful writing to life, and make these characters feel like themselves for the first time in over a decade. The interactions are great and you can tell they really cared both about new fans and old. Not perfect, but still amazing. 8.5/10 Expand

I am so glad that the characters in this game don't have cringy stories and bad backgrounds, in this game sonic, tails, Amy, and knuckles all have amazing stories. The cutscene animation in terms of expressiveness and movement is amazing dare I say unleashed level. -overall great game, would recommend to most
-one of the best soundtracks i've heard
-the basic gameplay is incredibly satisfying. the 'open zone' design fits sonic really well and frontiers serves as a good base for how future sonic games could look
-plot isn't anything special but how the characters are written and interact with each other is great
-combat needs work in certain regards but would love to see a combat system remain in future sonic games, where it gives more involvement compared to homing attacks or boosting but doesn't completely kill the flow of speed

    specific
-storywise seems to try to connect older games/media to one main plotline for the series
-grinding for various collectibles can be tedious, especially where big's fishing can get far more in lesser time
-too many 2d segments on chaos island, kind of kills the point of open zone (especially if you accidentally trigger a section and have to jump out or finish it)
-pop in can be terrible sometimes but doesn't detract too much from the overall experience
-final boss(es) felt kind of underwhelming where cross slash is super strong and the shooter minigame feels out of place for a secret final boss
-the end scene where eggman is silently grieving seems out of place but really ties together his development throughout the game

frontiers has its flaws, but a lot of the reviews give it too much flak where it can affect the enjoyment of the experience. everything considered, the game serves as a good turning point to how future sonic games could look and is well worth the cost.

The gameplay, music, bosses and open world design are great, and the plot is the most interesting one since Sonic Unleashed, and also the estetic of the open zones remembered me playing Sonic Adventure and Unleashed.
It lacks on the final boss, which is dissapointing, and sometimes upgrading the habilities tends to be really easy when you find out that big the cat and the cyloop give you skill points. And sometimes the cyberspce phisics tends to be weird to control, but you can get used to.
In general is a really good game, one of the best 3D games, but far from perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's got some issues. Controls take some getting used to, there's a bit of physics jank, and a bunch of the game's ideas and concepts don't seem implemented as well as they could have been. But that doesn't matter a whole lot when the game is fun. It's fun running around and doing all the little platforming segments and quests, or just running around for no reason. The minibosses are interesting to fight, and the major bosses are epic badass showdowns where they just give you Super Sonic and a sick metal track and let you go at it.

Assuming they don't do their usual strategy of starting from scratch for every game, there's a lot of potential for improvement for a sequel.

Despite that, I did play the classics along side them and genuinely appreciate the franchise for what it is.

So with that, I of course was concerned with how they'd be tackling the newest entry of the franchise after a rocky series of events that was the past decade for the guy- I truly wanted Frontiers to be good! Yet I waited and kept my expectations in check-

Lo and behold...I was blown away by how ABSOLUTELY FUN this was! The story, it's music and gameplay were all an absolute blast to enjoy- despite the uh, obvious issues like the camera, pop-in and other things. (The amount of times i got flung into the sky while boosting because of certain things not being loaded was funny but surprising LOL)

The team behind this truly had fun making Frontiers, because I could feel it as I played. I had fun just as much as they did. I cannot wait what they'll do next.

This is truly a renaissance for Sonic the Hedgehog. If you're a rather new fan, old fan, or just wanting to get into the series- give it a chance for yourself!

I just created an account to review the game as it deserves, I warn this to avoid thinking that I'm an account for Review Bombing or something like that, that said now my honest opinion of the game
Sonic Frontiers is a very good game especially fun, what a surprise, is what matters most in a video game, its open area works well and I would say that it is even strangely addictive to do simple objectives to complete the map and progress in the story the biggest problem I see is that reaching the end it starts to get repetitive, which actually is not such a big problem because when you start to feel this the game is over, even so I hope Sonic Team can improve this in the next Sonic games, despite how good it can be it is not free of other faults, it has its details that if they had been polished simply would give a greater value to the game, I mean some animations and the constant pop in, it is not the worst I've seen in a current video game but we all agree that it would be better if it was not there or if it was less noticeable, I also have to mention Cyberspace, I like the idea of short and replayable levels but its controls and physics are really bad, if the team plans to continue with this idea in the next games I would also like it to improve.
I also have another complaint which is that in the first 3 islands the story of the game gets more and more interesting but once you finish Chaos Island is like the game says "sorry but it has to end" and it feels very abrupt and in general the whole final stretch feels rushed or uninspired especially the final boss, maybe this is due to lack of time in the development and I understand it but still it is a flaw that has and must be marked.
things that I liked but that I almost forgot to mention so here it goes quickly
    *great soundtrack
*I completely love the battles against the titans, I would have liked an option to repeat the fights
*the combat is great, it's simple but it's very well thought out, it's also another aspect that I hope will improve in future games
and here ends my review, a very good game, it is really the way forward for Sonic Team they have a solid foundation and can continue to improve

Some Cyberspace stages were cool too and I really liked some of the character interactions later on. The fishing mini game with big was a nice distraction and gives you really good items and I love the soundtrack, but thats standard with sonic games.

    Here is everything else

Cyberspace sucks, flat out. Level design is eh, but the physics are really bad, you move super slow even when boosting and any semblance of momentum you might think you have is stripped away when you jump, it is slow and jarring. Some stages (1-2 specifically) are just difficult and I feel like the actual mechanics make them way worse than what they should be.

Enemy encounters are trivialized by the parry. The parry (activated by holding L1 + R1) requires no timing whatsoever, it acts like an active counter, you cannot move while using it, but almost every attack you can get hit by can be parried, so it ends up being ( run up to an enemy > hold L1 + R1 > attack) and its just repetitive, if you had to time the parry (something similar to Bayonetta's witch time) it'd be more engaging to me. More combo routes and special moves would've made it a lot more interesting, but for a lot of it it's either cyloop or mashing the square button after hitting a parry.

The open world (referred to as open zone by takashi iizuka) is a bit empty for me, but isn't bad. The environments are pretty and the lighting is really good. Props to The Hedgehog engine. It dosent get the credit it deserves, unfortunately good lighting can't save the awful pop-in. It dosent bother me much personally, but that may be my own personal bias towards the game. I noticed it sometimes but it never really hindered my experience with the game. To others It will, ESPECIALLY on switch.

The story isn't anything special. Without going into spoilers, there's a lot of cool moments and references, but nothing groundbreaking, but its decent setup for a continuation or more stories down the line. It feels pretty safe overall. For me, the highlight of the game are the boss battles, I will refrain from saying anything, if you can, GO INTO THEM BLIND, trust me it's well worth it. Unfortunately you cannot rematch them once defeated, so try to enjoy them while you can or make a save before the boss so you can fight it again if you want. Obligatory sonic music good comment here That leaves preformance.

On pc the game runs great, 60 fps (higher framerate options later on maybe?) And looks really good to boot. It's no elden ring, but what is there can be appreciated by anyone. If you can, play it on pc, xbox series x or ps5. Series S should be okay, but there is no 60fps mode yet on there. Ps4 and Xbox one is fine but it runs at 30 and it's kinda bad for a game where you run really fast, id play these if you didn't have anything else, which leaves the switch version.

Don't play it. If you have literally any other console there is no reason to play it on switch, it is genuinely really **** ugly and also runs at 30 (when it feels like it) it really isn't up to par and I blame both sega and Nintendo, but that's another discussion for another day. The game is a lot of things, some good, some bad. But to me it is a nessicary step forward to get another good 3D Sonic. I had a lot of fun in the 30 or so hours I put in, I played on hard mode and got a lot out of it. if you can, get it on sale. I wouldn't pay 60 bucks for it as it is now.

Sonic Frontiers is a decent game bogged down by a lot of mechanical and design issues that could've been prevented with more time in the oven. I give it a 7 out of 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is so weird of a game, but it's GOOD. At times it feels less Sonic-y but then reminds you exactly what it is. It's a massively more mature (not nsfw) installment in writing and acting. Ian Flynn did an incredible job with the story and dialog. The performances are a stark contrast to the over the top and annoyingly cartoony voices like Sonic Heroes, etc.

It's FUN. The combat rules and feels great, the speed and leveling/upgrade system feel awesome. The ability tree is simple and cool.

This is the best installment in years. This feels like what Sonic Adventure/2 could have been with adventure fields.

My only complaint is that cyberspace levels feel a tad short, but even then I think if they were longer it may be less fun.

If you love Sonic, if you love open world action, if you love platformers, I highly recommend picking this up.

It has it's flaws yes, but the story has been exactly what I've been waiting for, something actually engaging and not "silly and corny" at least in my perspective. The gameplay is actually pretty fun especially the combat and cyber space is just ok at best. This is something you don't wanna pass up on.

Still I don't think that everything here is done right - this game have kinda repetetive structure with collecting same mcguffins, watching a little boring cutscenes and playing those horrible Cyberspace levels. Those levels are the biggest ball at the foot for this game, cause they're lazy, clunky and have one of the worst controls ever made. I don't know what they're doing here. But I still think that this is a very good way for future games from frenchise and next time we will get a much better game. Expand

The Game itself is a fantastic experience, The gameplay is fun, The story is fascinating and it expands upon the existing lore for long-time fans and it also hooks in new fans as well, The only problems I encountered in this game are as follows:

one problem is the pop-ins, I don't think it's as bad as ruining the game but it's definitely noticeable, another thing is some bugs here and there that I'm pretty sure will be fixed and if not, they're not that common or game breaking except some that are kinda exploitable. Another thing that in my opinion could improve the game is a bit more balance in the game, fishing, for example, I think it's really good to have the option to buy vault keys and portal gears and etc directly from the fishing shop menu so that some players that are struggling with obtaining them in the normal way get to have them, But towards the end game it really gets OP, for example, I was defense level 40 and power level 45 and speed level 32 before entering the last island, and after one round of fishing in the last island, I was max level on all my stats! (max level is 99 for the 4 RPG stats)
The balancing issue affects boss fights as well, some bosses I was able to halve their HP bar in 5 attacks! (I was playing on hard difficulty and high speed style gameplay for context)

Now back to the good parts of the game, The soundtrack! Oh, the soundtrack! a single word, Awesome! everything about the soundtrack is just pure perfection! I enjoyed every single one of them, And I'm sure most sonic fans and new players are gonna also enjoy them.
This game is a huge step in the right direction for Sonic Team and SEGA and I hope that Sonic Team can expand their team and SEGA gives them more budget to make even better games!
I'm really excited about the future of this series and I really recommend you give this game a try!

I honestly don't understand some of the negative reviews online about this game - even being heavily critical it's no less than a 7/10. It's good. No, it's GREAT. Personally, I would give Sonic Frontiers a solid 8/10. Here are some of my more in-depth thoughts after about 18 hours of game play.

I'd like to start by saying I've enjoyed every second of this game so far, and at 18 hours in, I'm only about 75% finished with the story. No rushing and no completion pursuing - this is just from playing at my own pace on normal difficulty. Sonic Frontiers presents an enjoyable balance of 3d Sonic and 2d Sonic game play as well as a good mix of open zone exploration and typical Sonic style levels. There are even some fun mini game challenges including fishing levels, mini bosses, and other challenges that suit the theme of each chapter of the story. Each open zone functions as a sort of hub world for the more typical Sonic levels. This allows you to approach them at your own pace and in which ever order you decide. In the open zones you'll find collectibles and storyline prompts that loosely guide you through the area. This is all done very well and in a way that swiftly endears you to each of the characters. The story even features some well written character development for the characters and zone exploration features some random dialogue prompts that longtime fans of the Sonic Comics may enjoy. Overall, it's an enjoyable and fun experience that's well worth the price tag even after only 75% completion. Seriously, the music is phenomenal, and the fishing mini game is a good time, try it if you buy!

There are some flaws worth noting. The first of which is that there are only two graphics settings available - low and high. In addition, there is some minor pop in that doesn't really affect game play. As a PC gamer this was a little disappointing, but it's also something that's easily patched or even modded by the community. The controls are perfectly fine in both zones and levels, however there can be some awkward moments that may lead to a mistake or two. I tend to call these "Sonic what are you doing" moments as it's often just a good laugh. This wasn't detrimental to the overall experience though and didn't distract from the enjoyment of the game. The open zones are great, beautiful and have some interesting variety, but a little empty in certain spots. These areas aren't horrible but could be a little disappointing when you discover a cool looking location only to find no real point of interest there. It's not a perfect game, but it's an excellent start to a new direction for the Sonic franchise. Not only is Sonic Frontiers a game worth buying as is but it's also laying the groundwork for something truly excellent which is exciting to see after several Sonic games that fell flat.

I've seen a lot of people attempting to compare this to LoZ Breath of the Wild. If you're looking for BoTW 2 then wait for Nintendo to release it. This isn't that. The open zone format is more aptly compared to something like Pokemon Arceus and the world/enemy design is much more similar to the first Xenoblade Chronicles - with one boss so closely resembling a Mechon that it's kind of uncanny.

I can't wait to see where the Sonic Franchise goes from here, but why are you still reading this? Buy it already! Or if you already have then go play it! Just don't be surprised when you surface hours later only to realize you've just sunk 6 hours into a Sonic game in one go. A SONIC game? Yeah, that's right, it's that good.

There's everything to love about the open zone, and the traditional sonic formula in cyberspace could be a lot better, but for bitesize levels, /special stages, i think they did a good job, and you kind of have to understand why they had to limit sonics movement in this game, knowing that speed runners would complete this game a lot faster (than they already can) so they had to pull back a little on the freedom of movement. I've seen a lot of people complain about the floating rails and stuff, and to that I have to say, it's really not that bad. I thought it looked awful in trailers but as soon as I started playing I didn't even notice it. The world design is great. You'll see a bunch of random springs and rails you can go towards to help you collect stuff, but as you uncover the map by completing challenges, more rails and stuff appear and eventually you can zoom around the island in minutes. Also, I have to say, Sonic goes FAST. It takas a bit of upgrading, but I've never ran so fast in a video game. It feels amazing. Overall, fun ass game Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is definitely the best 3d Sonic game ever. It keeps pulling me in with the fact that there are huge open areas with really fun platforming to just do as you wish. Say you find a really cool course. You can just redo it over and over again, improving your time on it.

I've noticed that Chaos island has far more 2d style sections to pay around with. It gives a sort of theme to the island which is fun. I would have to say that Aeres island is my favorite just because of the sprawling open areas you can run around in and all of the fun nooks you can find your self in.

The Titan fights were so **** epic holy **** Each one felt unique in how you fight and counter their specific gimmick. My favorite would probably be the Wyvern. That particular fight felt very Super Sonic to me.

The Cyberspace stages are actually pretty fun The ones I seemed to enjoy the most were those based more on the Sonic Adventure 2 layouts. I honestly think that the way Sonic controls in this game lends itself well to the more Adventure style games. I hope to see more of that in the future.

My biggest nitpicks would have to be the pop in and the ring/speed upgrade system. The pop in can be annoying when trying to find the right set of obstacles that will take you to the memory token you're trying to get. The ring/speed upgrade system is **** slow, tedious, and took way too much time to fully level up. This needs to change badly and is so much simpler to fix than pop in.

Overall I think I'll be playing this game for an incredibly long time since this is such a great game to just play for flow state, similar to Marvel's Spider-Man. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys fun platforming and a somber story.

+ Combat is well made. The boss fights and mini bosses in particular are phenomenal. Simple enough to understand and get accustomed to, but deep enough to be engaging and to express yourself. Seriously, linking together a string of well executed attacks and combos makes you feel like a bad-ass. It's the highlight of the game for me.
+ Controls feel really nice, especially since you can customize them to a great degree. From button mapping to the smallest things like Sonic's physics and stats.
+ Aesthetically & graphically, the game looks pretty good.
+ I love the music A LOT. They're very atmospheric in the open world, and the Cyber Space and boss tracks are legendary. Give it a listen.

    - The game's collectible economy is very unbalanced. It's very easy to get huge amounts of progression based items, purple coins, rings, etc. with very little effort. Some tweaks here would help immensely.
    - Pop in can get pretty bad at times and I've had some frame rate issues. Overall, there are a fair bit of technical problems here that warrant a patch or two.
    - Cyber Space, while somewhat fun in their own right, aren't as deep, engaging, or fast-paced as older titles that focus on the boost formula action stages as the main draw. They just don't compare to Unleashed, Colors, Generations, or Forces imo.

Won't say anything on story rn since I'm not done with it yet. But everything else makes Frontiers well worth the $60.

“Uh, Sonic should’ve died in 2D”

    What about Mario then?

    “Same thing for Mario”

No. After 10 years of cringe-jokes, bad writing we finally got a game where Sonic takes itself seriously again. It was never meant for kids. It was meant for everyone. Yeah the movies did him dirty (I’m not saying the movies are bad, they are REALLY good. Thing is, they made Sonic character for kids. It make sense since he’s still a kid there but then everyone will think he is. When he’s not.)

“Image being a kid, he would be bored playing this game”

Are you that kid? Stop self projecting. Why we have to treat Kids like they are stupid? Super Paper Mario was 14 years ago. Do I really have to explain what I’m saying? That game aged like fine wine. Bowser’s Inside Story is another one. And this will do the same because it’s good. It’s so good. Cyberspace is the “eh, okay” of the game, I see the potential, it can be improved. And here I thought I would hate this game, I hate open worlds and I don’t like Zelda at all, but I respect it because that’s just me, Zelda makes good games. Wait, silly me, this is an “Open Zone” game (coping? Maybe) but well, I liked it. Maybe that’s why it worked. I recommend it to you all.

Took me roughly 20 hours to 100% the game, and I felt like that is the perfect length for this style of game.

Combat was good, but could definitely be expanded upon in future entries. The red seeds of power make Sonic do way too much damage if you level up strength, so its hard to enjoy how good the combat is when enemies die too fast.

Movement overall feels really good, and I like the accessibility options for it a lot. I would like the physics of the game to be closer to Adventures 1 & 2 , and I'd like the drop dash to control closer to the 3d spindash from those games, but in terms of just moving Sonic in the open zone he feels great.

I hope future games also bring back the unleashed art style. Fix the art style , fix the jank, and keep this same tone, and direction for the story, and the next game could be an easy 10/10.

While there is a bit of jank. This game definitely captures the feel of Sonic and is such a love letter to fans of the franchise! All of the great things about this title outweigh the minor flaws and Sega definitely poured their heart and soul into this game, it clearly delivers as the greatest Sonic game I have ever played

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definitely the best Sonic game since SA2 from Sonic Team.

Open world is really nice and interesting to explore, puzzles are not tough but not boring either.
Characters are finally alive after over a decade.
Cyberspaces are cheap rip-offs mostly from Sonic Generations, but some of them are still fun to play.
Combat system is really good, finally Sonic has something more than homing attack.
Main bosses are INSAINLY good! Music as always on fire.
And the story is finally good aswell
The game's lenght is finally over 3 hours. It took me 16hrs to beat the game for the first time and another 16 hours to beat the game for 100% (max levels, all maps unlocked, every fishing is on 100%, all achievments, all levels, all memories collected, secret boss) from start to finish.

The only downsights are very poor final boss, leveling up by 1lvl at a time by coko, broken physics in cyberspace levels and their overall poor design. And very disapponting post-game content (there is none)

But SONIC IS FINALLY GOOD SINCE GENERATIONS. And we need to show our support for developer team! And also for the people who are responsible for such a great vocals and soundtrack overall. AND THANK YOU IAN FLYNN!

What an absolutely phenomenal experience. Very legitimately the best Modern Sonic experience we’ve ever gotten. This game is more than just a good Sonic game, it’s a great game in general.

The story is amazing, and the deepest dive into Sonic lore we’ve had since the Adventure era, which I really appreciated. Sonic lore is deep and rich, and I’m glad we’re back to exploring it instead

Gameplay was something I was worried about when the first trailers and showings dropped, and I was very happily surprised to find that the Open-Zone formula is near perfect. The player finally has the freedom they crave as Sonic, and can traverse the zones and game as they please, which is a very welcomed change of pace.

There is a very rich feeling of progression to the game. As you play it more and more, upgrading Sonic's stats and learning the Zones and the different means of exploring them becomes second nature. There's a level of fluidity here that we've never seen in a mainline Sonic title, and it's extremely satisfying.

The amount of content in the game is also a huge surprise to me. The initial showings of the game had me worried the game was only going to have large open areas with nothing to do in them, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The fact that my first 100% play through of this Sonic game was 21 hours long is amazing and goes to show just how much there is to do here.

All in all, this game is amazing and I highly recommend everyone give it a chance. It really feels great knowing that this game is as good as it is!

Welcome back, Sonic. We missed you!

Sega has set a great foundation for what we need in a sonic game, I enjoyed every minute of it not including the final boss which ruined the hype build up from the previous bosses, but i had an overall great experience.

The way the characters interacted with each other was my personal highlight as it was such a fresh start from the last decade on how they were written, THIS is Sonic's

The way the characters interacted with each other was my personal highlight as it was such a fresh start from the last decade on how they were written, THIS is Sonic's true world. How the world has been portrayed has left me amazed with all the previous games referenced to make it all an official cannon and not a cheesy reference like previous games have done. (even a Sonic Boom reference was mentioned which caught me by surprise, makes me wonder what they will do with that in the next game)

Only problem with the game was the cyberspace control, and i was going to mention the reuse of previous games for level design but it was KINDA justified from the last island where sage basically mentions that, so I felt like I couldn't really complain as some stages where original, just wish there was more of them.

But I will just say they better see these user scores over the critics because WE know what we want in a sonic game WE are the ones who know sonic better than anyone else so WE know what makes sonic good.

Cheers to a bright future for sonic.

We have been waiting a decade for a Sonic game like this, and it finally delivers. This is a major step in the right direction compared to Colors, Lost World & Forces. Backstory, Character interactions, an intriguing plot and most important of all, fun and interesting gameplay. Sonic Frontiers is definitely the best game in the series, both in terms of plot and gameplay. The soundtrack is amazing.
The wait was totally worth it, I look forward to the next proposal from Sonic Team, I really want to know how they continue the story with the new direction they gave it.
In my opinion, the game is a 10 out of 10.

Sonic Frontier is a very fast-paced game on a huge map. And it is an open world 3D action RPG game. Ninja, Naruto, Inuyasha, Sekiro, Ookami, and Son Goku such as Ninja, Naruto, Goku, etc. are the best in this game where you can run at super fast speeds and have fun fighting.

This is my new favorite 3D Sonic Game PERIOD! The level design, platforming in the open zone, the sense of speed and incredible combat are all top tier. You can tell that this was a labor of love from SEGA and it paid off BIG TIME. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up and ignore all the haters mentally stuck in 2006. Sonic's entry into new, for him, gaming paths is overall successful, despite any problems. With a little polish and attention to detail, the next game in the series has the foundations in place to finally look eternal rival Mario in his three-dimensional, bubbly eyes.

As a 3D Sonic a step in the right direction. The open world has a lot to offer but gets lost in redundancy.
