There is too much wrong with Sonic Forces to recommend it to everyone, but if you’re hankering for 3D Sonic, and you’ve finished every other Sonic game, then check it out on sale.

Despite my multiple gripes with Sonic Forces, I still enjoyed the adventure. 3D Sonic games still aren't to where they should be after such a long time of iteration and experimentation, but through improved gameplay and level design, Sonic Forces continues the series' evolution in the right direction.

Poor controls, short and few levels: the game is over as fast as Sonic runs. It has its moments, but considering the positive prerequisites, the technical shortcomings make the game a mess.

Only the nostalgic levels really work, but if you want another run across cult classic Green Hill Zone, you can always launch Sonic Mania that came out back in August. [Issue#226, p.59]

We get the impression that Sonic Team wanted Forces to be the Best Sonic Game Ever, with a Greatest Hits package of everything good in the series, but they didn’t have the time, money or talent to accomplish this. The 2D sections control poorly, and the 3D sections sport the same problems that the series has had since Sonic Adventure – such as dying if you don’t play the level exactly as the designer intended. There’s fun to be had, but even then Forces feels so cheap and abrupt that you’ll be finished with it entirely in 4 hours. It’s not the worst 3D Sonic game, but in trying to do everything Sonic Team didn’t really accomplish anything. Next time, stick to just Generations 2 or Colours 2. Or even better – give Sonic entirely to other developers.

Sonic Forces’ few merits (like the soundtrack) are not enough to offset primitive gameplay, crude level design, poor pacing that completely obliterates the sense of speed, and the script that resembles a fanfic. [01/2018, p.42]

Sonic Forces is not, like several entries in the series, offensively bad. There are some stages where you can’t help but be swept up by its breakneck pace, pounding soundtrack, and chaotic pinball table levels. It’s just unfortunate that it was released so soon after Mania, which took the best of old Sonic and made it sparklingly relevant again. Forces, however, is plagued by inconsistent level design, floaty controls, and a risible Saturday morning cartoon storyline that only kids and rabid Sonic fans will find entertaining.

In this 3D Sonic game, developer Sonic Team attempts to iterate upon the formula of games like Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors, but it falls short due to frustrating design choices and inconsistent level design. Even its most entertaining moments come with caveats.

I won’t pretend that Sonic Forces is a disappointment – it telegraphed its kitchen sink approach to content a long time ago. Desperately trying to please every kind of Sonic fan, it is every bit the mishmash of half realised ideas vying for your attention that it seemed like it would be. I guess I just never expected that their attempts to hold that attention would be so feeble.

if you really enjoy playing the previous boost games i recommend you to play this one as well

dont care about the biased ratings it doesn't make any sense that they gave colors and generations such good ratings while forces is getting more hate than positive ratings
forces is a mix of an improved sonic colors and generations

Sonic Forces attempts to go new on ideas on story and gameplay without improving what might have been the most anticipated game on the market.Sonic Forces attempts to go new on ideas on story and gameplay without improving what might have been the most anticipated game on the market. To be completely fair, this was saved from actually being rushed to the market so I'll give it a chance to give it the score it deserves. There's no other way I can describe Sonic Forces without taking up a huge chunk of my time so I'm just going to call it the newest Windows Vista of the franchise. It's so addicting that you could possibly find a way to play to the end and end up loving it, but, like Windows Vista, it's not safe from the flaws it receives. I'm sure we'll get a better Sonic game one day, but for now we have to get used to what they gave us. Full Review »

Welp, sadly this Sonic game is very catastrophic.

The story is pure nonsense. It's similar to a 3rd grade fan-fiction. And that's say it all.

Gameplay? Well, the Sonics are very buggy, I don't understand why they haven't used the Sonic Generations' controls. Not the perfect physic for Classic, but at least is was not buggy!
At least the Avatar has a solid gameplay. But this is a Sonic game, this is not sufficient.

Ah, right. The level design. The legendary level design of this game.
The level design is horrible. In some levels I died because... Well, I don't know how to describe it. Some manual parts are designer for drifting, but you CAN'T BECAUSE THEY HAVE REMOVED THE ABILITY TO SONIC TO DO IT. And if you don't go slow you can easily die. Yes, you must go slow in a game where the protagonist like to run fast.

The bosses! The bosses are the best! The succeded not only to recycle bosses from old games, but... To recycle bosses in the SAME F***ING GAME. TWICE.

You can personalize the Avatar however you like, you have too much personalisation for it. Maybe if they used that budget in making a better gameplay or level design... but I know, that's a dream which cannot possibly become true.

For me, this game is a very big joke. Bad story, bad gameplay. I don't recommend it.
