Sleeping Dogs provides players with an engrossing narrative set to the atmospheric and richly-detailed backdrop of Hong Kong. An extensive array of additional missions and activities ensure there are always opportunities for further adventure and action to discover while roaming the streets. Along with an impressive presentation for both the visuals and music, Sleeping Dogs is without doubt the sleeper hit of this year for open world action games.

Square Enix and United Front Games pulled Sleeping Dogs from the brink of death, and what surprised me is just how good it turned out to be.

Unlike the previous ‘True Crime’ games, where there was a strict depiction of the city maps, Sleeping Dogs does not portray Hong Kong, inch by inch. United Front Games has implemented GTA’s novelties in way that winks slyly at Rockstar. In essence, what the GTA series has accomplished, Sleeping Dogs has carried out better and more elegantly. The finished game--which only made it to release thanks to a last-minute rescue from Square Enix--won't be remembered as one of the world's great open-world crime games. But it will be thought of as a good, solid one that did enough right to be mostly fun from start to finish. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

City action in an Asian style casts a fresh wind to the sandbox game genre, with attractive worlds full of details, great battle mechanics and cool free-run sections. [Sept 2012]

This game is a very pleasant surprise that's throwing down the gauntlet to GTA V with its Cantonese oral insult. The game's story along with plenty of gaming mechanics' innovation make Sleeping Dogs a truly remarkable and never-ending joyride with no intention to imitate the original at all costs. I'm so sorry Niko, you've been great, but at the end of the day Wei Shen takes it all.

The title Sleeping Dogs is a reference to "let sleeping dogs lie". Well, the developers should have heeded this ancient wisdom and let True Crime: Hong Kong die.

United Front Games did an amazing job of creating a true spiritual successor to the True Crime series that Luxoflux created so masterfully. For once, developers are not selling out to appeal to the Call of Duty audience. The on-rails drive by missions felt so familiar to their TC:NYC counterparts. While the police gameplay is noticeably different due to the nature of you being undercover, the gunplay feels incredibly similar with bullet time, dual wielding, and the purposeful lack of emphasis on shooting. You don't have some absurd amount of ammunition, and United Front did an excellent job of keeping True Crime true to its roots. The driving feels incredibly similar, especially with ramming replacing manual PIT maneuvers. The hand to hand combat feels just as in-depth as in previous games, with training locations and new moves to learn. I am just so amazed with how they kept all the things that made True Crime unique. You can still store weapons in car trunks, purchase and store vehicles in the garage, customize your player character, and so on. I am beyond ecstatic that United Front made sure Sleeping Dogs would always be remember as the third True Crime game. This consistency is a massive step forward for the industry: Call of Duty cannot ruin every game with a gun in it anymore. We can finally expect more unique, good games again. Expand

Take note, im am atmoshperic player, that doesn't always require mechanics, difficulty, or endless things to do. This game is a balance between good and evil, it focuses on some of the worst, yet, atmoshpericly, it backdrops into zen, pure bliss,a choice of centerdness among the madness.
The fans in the game, the one in the boathouse specifically,a major simplicity makes for a medetative state I think only the Asian can encompass.
I can feel heritage,a genuine buddhist touch in the game.
This game flows like water in the areas that pinpoint Asian culture at its roots.

aside from all the other good points (good pc optimizations, good melee, good driving, good acting, etc.), we finally get a game that isn'taside from all the other good points (good pc optimizations, good melee, good driving, good acting, etc.), we finally get a game that isn't america centric. The main characters are asian, and it is set in Hong Kong. I'm so glad not to have to look at new york and not have a protaganist that looks like vin desel. Expand

I can explore various different areas. martial arts, shooting, chase, treasure hunting are combined all together with impressed story line. graphic is amazing. developers even released HD texture package for free. of course. it looks very good. I can also do benchmark testing myself. the game seems to optimize very well for PC. I get very high frame rate with all max setting. gameplay is good excepting driving. driving seems over sensitive. too faster. thankfully, developers just patched new update this morning. I red Steam forum. many people seem positive on new patch. by the way, there is a big downside. HKship.exe file is in deep trouble. suddenly it is freezing, crash with no reason. I really urge developers must fix this biggest problem otherwise gamers will hate it. overall, it is a nice game even though I hated this kind of game before. nice work. Expand
