Feb 3, 2021Skul: The Hero Slayer has a lot going for it, but it is also muddled with design issues. For all of its creative skull designs, interesting build options, and cool and flashy attacks, I found the experience as a whole to be draining. It’s a case where the core gameplay loop is hindered by its overbearing rogue elements. A genre reliant on repetition has to accommodate for it by offsetting the recursive elements of the game, no matter how good the combat is. Skul: The Hero Slayer is certainly enjoyable on occasion, but its roguelite ingredients ultimately harm the title as a whole.

Jan 20, 2021While offering nothing truly groundbreaking, Skul: The Hero Slayer is a fun, colorful, and fast-paced rogue-lite, a good baptism of fire for newbies to the genre and a pleasant pastime for those who have consumed their fingertips on titles like The Binding of Isaac and Hades.

LEVEL (Czech Republic)Apr 12, 2021Fast and original, sometimes complicated. The retro action with a skeleton in the lead role has its own opinion on the roguelike genre. [Issue#309]

Mar 9, 2020Skul: The Hero Slayer is a procedurally generated rogue-lite that revolves around the use of different skulls to change gameplay stiles. In this early access phase, though, it lacks balance. [Early access score = 77]
