Certainly not a bad game, but it's largely the same as the 2016 Tomb Raider. I'd never played a Tomb Raider prior to the 2016 release, and I was pleasantly surprised with the experience. I also thought, however, that it was a bit of a grind what with all the fetch quests and scavenger hunts. While I beat the game, I don't remember the plot at all.

I also thought, however, that it was a bit of a grind what with all the fetch quests and scavenger hunts. While I beat the game, I don't remember the plot at all.

SOTTR is basically the exact same thing as ROTTR. The main differences are that (a) there's more cut scenes with your partner, Jonah; (b) Jonah is, overall, a much bigger part of the story; (c) there's parts of the game that take place in civilization, i.e., small towns and villages, so it has a bit of an RPG feel to it in that regard (this was, by far, the best addition to the title); and (d) the graphics are improved, though this is a bit apples to oranges for me since I played ROTTR on a console, and SOTTR on a suped-up P.C. on max settings.

Just like ROTTR, I'm not terribly interested in the plot. That's a shame, because the game makes you sit through a lot of cut scenes related to same. The base camp upgrade system is exactly the same as from the previous game. Overall, it's not a bad game, and it looks great on an amped-up P.C. It's just a bit boring after a little while - running around, spamming the "Q" button for "survival instincts," i.e., highlighting boxes to break, enemies, etc., looking around, breaking open a box, repeat, ad infinitum. I've not finished the game yet, but I've heard there's not a lot of combat. So far, I concur. That's going to be a problem, since the non-combat elements of the game (save for the tombs/crypts) are a bit boring (see above).

The worst of the three. The features of rpg increase greatly. Lots of customization of weapons. Very few enemies. I have developed many weapons and unlocked many skills.Probably never even used. The game drives so much exploration in order to improve skills without a real sense since there are no enemies. The story is discreet. But never exciting

This is the first Tomb Raider since the first one that comes anywhere near close to capturing a sense of wonder and discovery. Stepping into the unknown and unexplored space of Ancient Tombs and Crypts is thrilling.

However...(you knew this was coming right?)...what you end up discovering in those wonderful spaces are dull boring and samey.. More often than not, your exploration will be rewarded by a skill or gear upgrade. Bearing in mind that the TR skill tree is utterly pointless, none of the upgrades makes a blind bit of difference to the gaming experience, this makes the end result meaningless and unrewarding.
The best bits of the game can be found away from the main story line with side missions and general exploration, and especially where things get a little freaky, the worst bit is mashing the "survival instinct" button every second making sure you're not missing some pointless item or resource.
A little bit shocked just how easily killing and dealing with death comes to Lara. She seems to have no compunction in piercing someone with an arrow and hanging them from a tree or stabbing them in the back of the head.
    .
This is an angry obstreperous Lara, brimming with angst and worry. I mean take a chill pill, do you not have THE best job in the world: travel to exotic places discover ancient treasures and artifacts. Where is your joy Lara? There is little or no fun in the gameplay. It takes itself so seriously.

I really want to give this game an 8 or even a 9, but the issues set the game back too far.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider does a lot of things right, but also does some things that were done "okay" in the previous 2 titles far, far worse.
Pacing is an absolute nightmare. You constantly feel like you're being shoved along through the story and any emotional moments feel like they don't

Pacing is an absolute nightmare. You constantly feel like you're being shoved along through the story and any emotional moments feel like they don't stick and are swiftly forgotten.

Traversal, this is the first in the series where i've had issues with the controls while climbing. Almost all of my deaths have been due to Lara not jumping far enough(in a scripted event) or just plain refusing to latch onto a wall.

Combat, while I appreciate the game going back to its roots of less human enemies and more animal enemies. It also made encounters primarily stealth, with terrible AI and if seen, you end up fighting the most aggressive enemies I have ever encountered to a point where it feels pointless to use anything other than a shotgun for most of the game. Melee attacking is far worse and the bow received a very, very heavy reduction in power from previous titles.

Graphics, no complaints here other than it being extremely heavy on the CPU load with a lot of stuttering without external tweaking. Game looks amazing and blatantly better than the previous 2 games.

Sadly, this was not the conclusion to the trilogy I had hoped for. Lara STILL has a lot to learn and honestly, her voice actor feels like her only emotions are anger and gasping for air.

Unfortunately this is the worst of the three new Tomb Raider games. Why?

    1) The story is not very good and they've removed most scripted sequences and cutscenes to the point where most of the game doesn't really have any story past "find the box". 2) 95% of the game takes place in the jungle which feels quite repetitive a few hours into the game. 3) I read that the challenge tombs

    2) 95% of the game takes place in the jungle which feels quite repetitive a few hours into the game.

    3) I read that the challenge tombs were supposed to be more challenging this time but that's not the case. They're just as short and simple as before.

    4) They've pretty much killed combat and there are very few combat encounters now. When you actually get to a combat sequence it's always focused towards stealth. In many cases you can't even use guns but are forced to use your bow. Why even have weapons and a resource collection + upgrade system for them when you almost never have to use them?

    5) Because of 4) crafting any gear is also pointless. I play on Hard and never crafted anything since there are so few combat encounters it won't really matter.

    Verdict:

The game doesn't really bring anything new and takes too many steps back, mainly with combat. I was a bit worried when they changed development team and unfortunately it was not for the better. If you really liked the previous two games and want more of the same then get this, otherwise don't. It's a good thing this will be the last game in the series because this last entry clearly show that it doesn't have a future.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is not a terrible game, but will never be a great one either. Greatness requires innovation, and this third installment in the series simply has very little of it.

As much as I played and enjoyed these games, I hope they stop with the contradictory neurotic tough girl with the bow, and her endless, now, not at all an origin story, and a million conceits for why she loses her gear and has to construct bows. A person who climbs a mountain dangles from cliffs and takes multiple gunshot wounds does not suddenly break down in tears and give up. Crafting and gear is fun, but there's no reason to always start from stratch.

I want the bad arse with the mansion, the classy accent and the dual pistols back. I've enjoyed these games, but if this is the story of 'how she became to tomb raider', and it's over: can we have the actual tomb raider now?

Also, stop with the endless cutscenes, give the players some meaningful choices, and get rid of those damned time trials (every other mechanic is great, but those are grindy and annoying).

Cinematic is nice, and your story telling is nice (although the overall plot was very similar to the 2nd game), but often with cinematic games it feels like you are just watching a movie with challenges inbetween. Like the things you do have no impact. I enjoyed the story telling it was good, but I grow very tired of games where the player makes no real difference to the game. You have skills, crafting, dialogue, storytelling: Why not go the full hog, make the next one an adventure RPG with meaningful choices, and dialogue options?-

Good game but for me not as good as his predecesor. Longer tombs but it's rather an open world more than a lineal game (which i don't like it). I still prefer Tomb Raider 1, 2 or 3 (specially 2).

PROS: Graphics + Smooth movements + Long game + Lot to explore and discover + Enviroments

CONS: Weak story again + The tombs' explorations and puzzles are just a few + Shooting is almost optional

Good action-adventure game that becomes too repetitive after 10 hours.
Exploration is well-done in this game, but due to the over-saturated map feels a bit like a chore after a while.
The puzzles are interesting and try to test your spatial reasoning as well as your hand-to-eye coordination. Most of the time, the parcour options make sense, but a few time, they are just trial and error

The combat works fine, but this game lacks enough action overall, proof is that I constantly need to leave ammo/materials behind.

The combat is still the same but SOTTR focus too much on the bow for my taste. Tons of cheap deaths of course. I really dislike those quick times sequences that are on rails. Not sure how they can fix this and keep the action. I also dislike the abundance of swearing from Lara (always the same too). That make her sound not very British and a bit dum. There are some bugs that seems to prevail on PC and Xbox releases. I give it a 68%. It is fun to play but somewhat tedious in some aspects. Expand

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a slight improvement over its prequels: Climbing, diving, and stealth have been further improved to offer more freedom. Shadow's story continues after Rise, so it's advisable to play that first. If you played Rise, Shadow will import your skins from it, in case you liked using those.

The game has an amazing story and the cutscenes are really nice to watch since Lara is more involved with the people in the world as opposed to simply flying solo. The lore for the collectibles continue to be an interesting read, and there is a lot for you to search and collect.

The combat is sadly bland, and most of the puzzles are straightforward and hold your hand through them, which kind of ruins the fun. The traps are meaningless too, since they are incredibly easy to detect and there's really only two different kinds of traps. The skills, items and so on are completely unnecessary; if anything, they make the game too easy. I stopped upgrading Lara not long after starting the game because of this.

I suggest NOT using any DLC-related weapons, since they make the combat too easy. (But seeing as how the combat's kind of annoying to deal with anyway, it might not a bad idea either.) Having to use your basic weapons and needing three shots to kill something isn't ideal, and just wastes your time with the fighting. But it's your choice.

Ultimately, I had some difficulty figuring out what to rate this sequel. On one hand, the game feels good; it's great to explore a vast world and there's plenty to do. On the other hand, because of how easy and one-dimensional it is, it can become a chore after long sessions.

I've always played the TR series with a controller, but due to a serious issue in this sequel where the camera is extremely sensitive on it, I've had to maneuver differently in order to make up for the poor aiming. This sequel is definitely easier to play with a keyboard and mouse. Sadly, Square Enix doesn't seem to be addressing this issue at all.

I can only give this game a 7, because giving it an 8 would imply that the game is fine, when it isn't. Although the story was absolutely spectacular, the lack of decent traps and puzzles to increase the tomb difficulty was a disappointment. The game itself is quite long though, which is a plus, content-wise.

I've read that some people are complaining about graphics, that it's too old, shadows are low quality etc., but I think graphics are decent - especially characters animations.

Sound quality is really good, especially in the scene with jaguars - that moment was like a movie, great sound.

There is one thing of this game that some will take as negative aspect - Shadow of the Tomb Raider lacks of combat with enemies. There's really not much combat scenes in this game. In both TR 2013 and ROTTR there was more fight scenes. I personally don't think it's a breaking point of the game - because for me Tomb Raider franchise always been about exploring map, exploring tombs, crypts, looting etc. Although it kinda makes weapon upgrades useless, because like I mentioned, there's not much combat scenes, I'd recommend to upgrade your bow first - this'll be one of the most important tool in the game.

In conclusion, I'd say this - if you liked Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, you probably gonna like this one too, cause it's pretty much the same - same sandbox with tons of tombs, some challenges, looting, getting xp and skill points and some tiny combat sequences.

Low sales are due to the plot and because the series have no chips like Nathan Drake in almost every part introduced a new game element.

Lara’s new adventure is definitely the best in trilogy, but it still lags behind the leaders of action-adventure genre, such as Uncharted 4. [Issue #233, p.44]

Tomb Raider was personal because it was personal. But now it’s come full circle to yet another vapid videogame character muddling through bad writing, rote familiar gameplay, and fewer features than the last time. Wake me when the next reboot is here.

The new Tomb Raider shows Lara Croft as an empty character that has nothing inside.
