I don't usually review games before I finish them, but SotTR is such a big disappointment and a chore to play, I can't bring myself to finish it, even though I'm at the last area (yes, I got that bored I actually looked up how much further I have to slog through this drivel). I have 100% completed 2013, on both PC and Xbox, and that game had an underrated multiplayer. It did everything right. Rise of the Tomb Raider improved upon it in much the same way that Arkham City improved upon Arkham Asylum. Even though I'm not the target audience for these kind of games, I really appreciated their quality and design, as well as the graphics.

But Shadow is just inexcusably bad. It might be because it's not Crystal Dynamics. Everything about this game, except the graphics, feels like a step back. The story is even more nonsensical, it's not gripping at all and the characters are very bland. Gameplay-wise, it's 90% exploration of caves and perhaps 5% combat. There's a lot of side quests and collectibles littered around, but you soon realise all of it is pointless, because despite having a large skill tree and lots of weapons, most of them are unusable because the game provides very few opportunities to engage in combat how you want. It's heavily stealth focused, which is fine but a large part of the skill tree and weapons are for aggressive combat. There is very little action in this, the genre this game belongs to can only be described as "adventure"; and that's putting it kindly, given how bland that adventure is.
So you end up having lots of resoruces and fully upgrading all your weapons, but never get to use them. And then there's the outfits system, which is pointless too in the definitive edition because all the Definitive Edition ones are unlocked from the start, and look a lot better than the ones you unlock throughout the game. The game is just so restrictive with what weapons and outfits you can use, and lacks both good level design and action sequences.
This largely mirrors my experience with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: the developers put in a good number of weapons and abilities, but you never get the chance to use them because the game is so thin on actual content, it's mostly filler.

If all you want is a game that looks good and don't care about gameplay, this is fine. I honestly upgraded to RTX graphics card for this game and was expecting to be amazed, but really it doesn't look THAT much better than Rise. The ray-tracing is for shadows only, and RTX Medium shadows looks better than High or Ultra RTX, and actually RTX off and shadows on Ultra actually looks better in some scenes. So it's just a gimmick. DLSS works reasonably well, but the HDR in this game is horrible, one of the worst I've come across and relies on the Windows setting, not the driver.

The controls are also a downgrade. Whilst it natively supports DualShock 4, the reload button doesn't work for some reason. The actual traversal of the environment is inconsistent too. Sometimes Lara won't grab ledges, and the path isn't always obvious because of the spacing and lack of clear indicators. The other two games were excellent in this regard, but Shadow just feels off.

Overall, I can't recommend this game, regardless of whether you enjoyed the previous two in the trilogy. It's very bland, lacks variety and is very thin on action. It's mostly just filler.

I've never had particularly strong feelings about the Tomb Raider games. I didn't own a PS1, and those games looked kinda crappy anyway. I played the 2013 game on PS3 for that one month that I got Playstation+ for free for the 2011 hack, and I didn't hate it.

But my goodness, this game is bland.

I just don't have much in the way of positives to say about this game. I suppose the game plays well on my PC, which shouldn't be an issue at this point, but we all know how PC ports tend to fare. Voice acting is pretty good I suppose, but a lot of the dialog is kinda cringey.

    That's about it, folks.

The game doesn't look particularly good, especially considering it came out AFTER Horizon Zero Dawn. I mean, I didn't love HZD, but I could at least look around at the world and marvel at it. Lara's face in particular teeters on the edge of uncanny valley; her plastic skin and emotionless eyes just feel uncomfortable. I'd expect a Tomb Raider game - arguably one of the biggest franchises in the world - to look better.

The gameplay is almost a copy paste of HZD's, which is probably a copy of some other game, but the point is that it's getting kinda old. Grab some branches and junk on the ground, make arrows, shoot arrows into dudes' heads.

WAIT WHA- SHOOT ARROWS INTO WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT??!?!

And this is the part that felt the strangest of all. It's not like some killing dudes is so unusual for games. It doesn't feel all that strange in games like Uncharted, or even HZD, but here I'm 5 minutes into the game, and Lara just freakin shivs a man to death, then headshots another seconds later, picks up his gun and fookin mows down 10 guys. It's uncomfortably savage, and makes her feel like a murderous sociopath. A bit later there's this big action setpiece in a typhoon/tsunami, and Lara witnesses a child falling to their death. She barely reacts to it, and just a minute later in a cutscene she's all like "WE GOTTA DO OUR MISSION, LET'S GET TO THE CHOPPA" - in a monsoon, no less. How am I supposed to feel sympathy for a character who shows none for a literal child? Sociopath Lara constantly shows up throughout the game. That moment when a father thanks me for murdering a bunch of gangbangers - played completely straight, mind you - is oddly off putting. I mean, yeah, Lara objectively improved his life and saved his son, but I'd be pretty terrified of a complete stranger going on a murderous rampage for my child. The disregard for bad guys' lives is wild, and yet, AND YET, in the final moments of the game, after finally taking out the big bad, the game stops and has the gall to try to make us feel bad for him.

    (ಠ_ಠ)

On some level, if the action was great I wouldn't get hung over this part so much, but it's really not, and the game really leans hard into the story-telling bits. And since the story's not all that interesting, it tries to lean into its characters. But Lara kinda sucks. There's this sidequest where Lara has to meet up with people who have been shunned from society, and she has to tell some dude what she's learned from interacting with them. Her response is some Tony Robbins self-help garbage. I couldn't believe such bargain bin level inanities could make it into a [Captain Sterling voice] tRiPle AaA [/Captain Sterling voice] video game, but that probably says more about me than the industry, really.

The truth is, writing this review, it made me appreciate Horizon Zero Dawn more. If you absolutely have to play an open-world adventure game with arrow-based action and crafting, just go play that instead. HZD has a better, bigger open world, that's less linear and railroaded. HZD's story is better, the action is better, the heroine is better, there is more arrow and weapon variety, the upgrades are more interesting... The only thing Tomb Raider has going for it would be the tomb and crypt puzzles, but if you want to do puzzles get a puzzle game instead.

Thank god for free games on the Epic Store, I'm glad I didn't pay for this.

The first reboot was amazing and Lara was beautiful and sexy. This is now the politically correct version. The game also has too much pointless walking, no-fun killings and a dumb story. What is outrageous is that there are even socialist agendas in the game, like conversations such as:

-"They don’t paying us a living wage!!!!!!!!!" - we should have Commie Sanders to do something!

    - "...and they sell the relics for PROFIT" - oh, because profit is so EVIL kiddos!

    - "They are after money, not history!" - because money is so BAD kiddos, and the two can't go together at all.

-"The oil company left us when the oil price went down!" - because they should have stayed there and working for losses, right? Oh those greedy bastards, they wanted to keep their company!

Outrageous, and you even paying for the propaganda!

This game is definitely for 12-year olds, and not above. They can jump and run and swim all the way.

But again, her sad looking face is the most irritating. Her partner's face is also mostly sad-looking.

He is unresponsive and he has no soul). Are we in a battle or are we in a journey with Lara? I could not decide, you choose if you really know what’s been going on for years in the games. About game, control and playing. I could not see a huge difference if I look at the graphics quality. It looks like Rise of the Tomb Raider. If you want Tomb Raider to be a different game from others which are compared with it, first make something different such as graphics and well-scenario which is NOT predictable, tedious and monotonous. I am not really that kind of person who is obsessed with graphics but in these years, graphics is considered as an important feature and I want this game series to be known well. Secondly, awful game mechanics. It destroyed the game play in some parts. To continue, Lara… As a woman gamer, I even didn’t have any problem with Lara’s old look (big boobs, good body or sexy clothes etc.) She is not a model, but she looks like she is -in new games. I really wanted to see Lara’s classic outfit for the new game, and her dual pistols. Huge disappointment. The first thing comes to mind is her dual pistols, not an arrow. About personality, did you realize that Lara is ready to cry in new games? Come on! Please do not touch and destroy Lara and her journeys anymore OR get help from people who knows what Tomb Raider is! Expand

    3. The story is so unclear and boring, that at the end of the game I wasn't sure what's the problem with Paititi and who is Dr. Dominguez.
    4. There is less freedom than in the previous part. This game leads you even if you don't want that. It always blocks some parts of the map and moves or restricts the camera (POV) depending on the current quest. Seems like the game treats us like a 6-year old children.
    5. Face animations. Sometimes normal, sometimes ugly. Kind of Mass Effect Andromeda.

It gets 4 points because of a good fighting/stealth, and quite interesting tombs.

Overdramatic, and always spoiling the good moment by commenting the obvious. And she looks boring too.

    2. Gameplay: Controls would be fine, if gameplay was not interrupted by tons of cutscenes or forced to slow down for dramatic effects or to emphasize Laras whine over radio. Once you get through the main game you can start the more interesting side quests and challenges.

My advice for original Tomb Raider fans: get through the main story in a rush, then change Laras appearance to an old version and switch off her annoying voice. Now the game becomes actually very nice and there are still plenty of things to discover in side missions.

I can't comment on the main storyline as i either skipped the damn cutscenes (if possible) or cut the sound and walked away until the cutscene was over (if skipping was impossible).

As a Tomb Raider fan since the very beginning, i feel sorry for how Lara Crofts character has been sabotaged. I mean HELLO? this is a computer game! There really is no need to have your depressed girl next door in the main role just for political correctness.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a pretty game, but it’s a complete slog to play. It provides an excellent example of how the focus on graphics of the “Triple A” space of the game industry is causing serious detriment to the overall quality of games.

The graphics, being the game’s greatest strength, are also one of its greatest weaknesses. Environments are very pretty, but they’re busy to the point of making it nearly impossible to navigate. The game has a perception key that provides a quest marker and highlights (some) interactable objects, and you’ll find yourself having to press it every five seconds while playing. Even then, you’ll frequently struggle with trying to figure out which piece of hanging rope is important and which of the 57 rock ledges can be grabbed. While environments are varied, the game’s animations are too repetitive. You’ll frequently see the same loop for deaths, taking breaths while swimming, shuffling under things, squeezing through openings, and many other actions.

The controls are unintuitive, taking hours to learn and even then requiring prompts for some of the obscure actions. Once the player has learned them, they still don’t work consistently, usually killing the player when they decide not to.

Worldbuilding is rather poor. The modern areas were interesting and believable, but the generic NPCs are utterly lifeless, just repeating the same actions repeatedly and having little to no interactivity. The ruins, meanwhile, often seem to exist for the sake of ruins. They’ll be in places that seem logistically impossible, lack any sort of sensible access and entrances, and just overall be in better condition than seems probable. There are also things which seem to exist purely for getting in the player’s way. For example, at one point the player has to lower an ancient drawbridge to get across a river. Why would there be a drawbridge in a civilization with no river traffic beyond canoes? There are numerous examples of puzzles and environments like this, where there appears to be no logical basis for the existence of these constructions. Another issue with worldbuilding regards the hostile animals. The player can be attacked by piranhas, which instantly kills them. In reality, piranhas are relatively docile regarding humans, and in the case that they do attack one, they’ll cause minor injuries and are almost never fatal. The player can also be attacked by jaguars, which is incredibly rare unless cornered, as they’re afraid of humans. Multiple jaguars can attack the player at once, which is another mathematical impossibility, because they’re solitary animals.

The writing was bad at times, but the overall story was interesting (at least the first third was, as I couldn’t stand the gameplay beyond that point). Dialogue was good and the voice acting excellent, but the protagonists were frequently saved by deus ex machina and plot holes were prevalent. Characters also seemed fairly one dimensional, with a few exceptions such as Jonah.

There are issues with the camera. In cramped areas, it often gets stuck on rocks, leaving you unable to see what you’re doing, and when you aim your weapons, it jitters and makes hitting your targets difficult.

The game suffers from poorly-implemented cutscenes. Control is frequently taken from the player for seemingly no reason, and it’s not always clear when it’s been returned. In hostile environments, this can kill the player. There are other instances where the game effectively has a cutscene, but it requires the player to hold the forward key for progression. You can’t even control the camera in these instances. What is the point?

The stealth is poor, and it is the reason that I gave up on the game. When using stealth, enemies act practically brain-dead, but they generally stay next to each other such that killing one alerts the rest. If you do alert the enemies, then your chances of using stealth are over. This is fine for the first third of the game, as you could use stealth to take down a few enemies that were separated and then take up a defensive position for gunning the rest down. The problem arose when the game decided that, despite the presence of loaded weaponry and lack of penalty for allowing the firing of said weaponry, you just weren’t allowed to use it. I personally couldn’t stand spending half an hour to kill six enemies, especially when the means to kill them all in less than five seconds existed but was simply barred from me for no good reason, so I gave up.

All in all, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a very pretty game. It’s just not fun to play. The budget needed to be spent on better playtesting rather than graphics. The overall story is what kept me playing for as long as I did, but the plot could have been better-written rather than relying so heavily on cliches and highly improbable occurrences. Furthermore, the characters could be better-developed.

Lara’s new adventure is definitely the best in trilogy, but it still lags behind the leaders of action-adventure genre, such as Uncharted 4. [Issue #233, p.44]

Tomb Raider was personal because it was personal. But now it’s come full circle to yet another vapid videogame character muddling through bad writing, rote familiar gameplay, and fewer features than the last time. Wake me when the next reboot is here.

The new Tomb Raider shows Lara Croft as an empty character that has nothing inside.
