Like most beat’em’ups, Scott Pilgrim really shines in co-op, so poor netcode really is a disadvantage. On the other hand, the gameplay is good, and chiptune soundtrack is great for fans of this genre. [Issue#252, p.52]

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition is the same game that everybody lamented when it was lost six years ago. The progression-based game flow, the fantastic visuals and soundtrack, and the same problems bar one. While it’s nice to have back what’s become something of a legend in its absence, you know what they say about meeting your heroes.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World: The Game is a decent beat-'em up that fans of the genre should get with their eyes closed, especially when it is the first time it officially appears on PC. As for the rest, the game may offer a few hours of quality fun with friends and that is it.

Though I had my fun with the original game 10 years ago and had moved on, I still found coming back to the core loop and flow of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game to be a satisfying romp. It's not often to see games that get pulled from circulation get a second chance, yet the Complete Edition more than makes the case that this cult favorite beat-'em-up has earned another shot. While much has changed over the last decade when it comes to geek-appeal and retro gaming appeal, what's here is still a solid beat-'em-up that's gotten mostly better with age.

I will say that Ubisoft’s rerelease of Scott Pilgrim is relying a lot more on nostalgia than other recent beat ‘em ups. I’d still think something like Streets of Rage 4 is a fine game on its own even in the absence of Streets of Rage 1 through 3, while Scott Pilgrim might not have the same appeal to someone who’s never read the comics, seen the movie, or played the game back in 2010.

Today, Scott Pilgrim vs The World feels somewhat let down by its insistence on grinding, even if teamwork lightens the load, and the action is never too deep. Still, just like Scott himself, the game makes up for this with whimsical creativity, offbeat humour, and absurd storytelling.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a fun beat'em up with a beautiful retro style, great final bosses and a lot of funny moments. Better with your friends, thanks to local and online co-op.

It's not on Steam, so I'm giving 0. I'm not buying it from some trash epic game store.
